The present invention pertains to filling end parting and clamping mechanism for filling replenishing looms and has more particular reference to the operating means for the parting and clamping blades of such mechanism.
The operation of the filling replenishing mechanism of the conventional automatic loom results in the formation of a length of filling, called an out-going filling end, which extends from the cloth selvage to the out-going filling carrier. The out-going filling end, particularly in bobbin changing looms, must be severed at a point between the cloth selvage and the filling carrier at about the same time the filling carrier is ejected from the loom. Preferably, the part or branch of such filling end which extends from the selvage to the point of severing 'is clamped and withdrawn out of range of the weaving instrumentalities. There is accordingly provided in such looms a movable carrier having parting and clamping blades thereon, the carrier and blades being usu ally manipulated so as to part and clamp the out-going filling end and withdraw it out of range of the weaving instrumentalities simultaneously 26 with the transferring operation.
It is an object of the present invention to provide novel and improved operating means for parting and clamping mechanism such as that above described.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention,
the parting and clamping blades which move to- Ward and from filling receiving position are operated by a lever which moves with the blades and which in turn, is operated by a single pivoted cam. The advantages of such a construction are simplicity of construction and ease of operation, as will be more fully explained.
The said preferred embodiment is illustrated on the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the parting and clamping mechanism and certain contiguous mechanism;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, approximately full size, of the parter operating mechanism of Fig; 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevational View of the same; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating a different stage in the operation of the mechamsm.
The loom to which my invention has been applied is but partially shown on the drawings, the omitted parts being of conventional construction and not of the present invention. There is shown a part of a right hand loom side I carrying the rotary hopper 2, and a part of the bobbin transferring mechanism comprising a transfer jects laterally from the movable blades.

()peration of the transferring mechanism results in the formation of the out-going filling end 10 which must be parted somewhere close to the shuttle box and one branch clamped and withdrawn from the path of the lay and shuttle box. The parting and clamping mechanism shown is supported from the stub shaft 4 by means of 15 brackets I0, I! which support a member I2 having a guideway therein. A parter carrier I3 is slidably mounted in the guideway for movement forwardly and rearwardly of the loom.v A movable parting blade l4 and a movable clamping 20 blade l5 are pivotally mounted on a pin IS in the carrier l3. These blades are adapted to be opened and closed by means to be hereinafter described. The movable blades may cooperate with blades I 1 and I 8 which are fixed to the 25 carrier.
The carrier and the parting and clamping blades are thus mounted in front of the shuttle box. They are moved to filling receiving position, i. e., rearwardly toward the shuttle box, 30 prior to each transferring operation and are withdrawn forwardly from such position simultaneously with the transferring operation. To this end, a pin l9 in the arm I is connected to swing a bracket 20 rearwardly simultaneously 35 with rearward movement of the arm, the bracket being pivotally suspended from the stub shaft 4 and having an arm engaging a pin 2| in the carrier 13. Since, as is usual, the arm 1 moves rearwardly prior to each transferring operation 40 the carrier will be moved likewise. Simultaneously with the transferring operation the lay (or parts thereon) will strike screw 22 in the carrier and the dog 5, thus withdrawing or returning the carrier forwardly. 45.
The parting and clamping mechanism as thus far described is not of the present invention, the same being similar to the mechanism disclosed in patent to Burdett, No. 1,883,532, granted October 18, 1932. 50
Prior parting and clamping blades, such as those of the aforesaid Burdett patent, have been moved between open and closed positions by fixed cam means directly engaging a pin which pro- Such 5 construction has proven objectionable in that it imposes a lateral strain, or twist, on the blades and thus makes them hard to operate and tends to separate them so that they do not part and clamp the filling properly. I overcome such difficulties by dispensing with direct operation of the blades and operating them by a blade operating member 24.
The member 24, in the embodiment shown on the drawings, is comprised of a lever which is mounted to move bodily forwardly and rearwardly with the carrier i3 and also to pivot with respect to the carrier for opening and closing the blades. The blade operating lever is connected to and partly supported by the movable blades I4 and 15, as by pivotally engaging a pin in the forward end of such blades. Upper and lower arms 26 and 2i, respectively, project rearwardly to embrace, with a certain amount of lost motion, a part such as the guide 23 which is fixed with-respect to the carrier. The :part thus embraced partly'supports the lever and also forms a fulcrum therefor.
It will be apparent that if the forward-end of the lever be raised, the blades will be opened, and if the lever be thereafter depressed the blades will be closed. The lever operates substantially in the plane of the blades and therefore substantially eliminates any objectionable twisting stresses in the blades. Furthermore, as shown, the leverzmay be of such proportions as to require less force to operate than if the'blades were operated-directly as heretofore.
Cam means are provided for engaging and 0peratingthe lever 24 :to open the blades as the latter move rearwardly prior to a replenishing operation and to close the same as they move forwardly. Preferably,.such means is comprised of asingle pivoted cam 28' which is provided with cam surfaces -29 and 30 on opposite sides of a pin 3| on which'the cam is pivoted. The pin 3| may be. supported in a bracket-32 which is fixed to the member l2. A lug '33 projecting from the side of the cam rests on an adjustable stop screw 34. Adjustment of the stop screw serves to vary both the time and extent of the blade operating movementrof the lever 24.
During the normal operation. of the loom the carrier l3 isin its forward position and the parting. and clamping blades are closed as shown by Figs. 1-3. Then, upon call for filling replenishment but prior to the actual transferring operation, the arm I, together with carrier l3, will be moved rearwardly to move the blades to filling receiving. position. As this movement occurs, a lug '35 on the forward end of the lever 24will engage and ride up the cam surface 30 to first move the .arm 26 into contact 'with the part 23 and thereafter swing the lever about such part anduopen the clamping and parting blades. Upon continued movement of the carrier rearwardly the 'cam.23 will pivot to allow'the lever to pass rearwardly to .the position of Fig. 4. It will be noted that in'Fig. 4 the open blades have received the outgoing filling end I but have not yet parted or clamped the same.
When the carrier i3 is moved forwardly, simultaneously with the transferring operation, the 111g 35 engages the cam surface 29 with the result that the lever 24 is moved downwardly to close the clamping and parting blades. Such movement parts the filling end, by cutting it and also clamps it. Continued forward movement of the carrier occasioned by the returning of the arm I to normal position results in the clamped filling being withdrawn forwardly and in the parts assuming their normal positions as in Figs. 1-3.
It is not essential to my invention, in some of its aspects, that the single pivoted cam be employed to both open and close the parting and clamping blades, but such construction is desirable in that it is simple, inexpensive and quite efficient.
Having fully disclosed the preferred embodiment of my invention, I claim:
1. In an automatic filling replenishing loom, the combination of bobbin transferring mechanism, a lay having a shuttle box, a parter carrier adjacent. said shuttle box, means for moving said parter .carrier toward said shuttle box prior to each transferring operation and away from said shuttle box simultaneously with each said transferring operation, parting and clamping blades movably mounted on said carrier for movement between open and closed positions, and means consisting 'of a single pivoted cam and a blade operating lever. operated by said cam for opening said blades as said carrier moves toward said shuttle box and closingv said blades assaidcarrier moves away from said shuttle box.
2. iIn an automatic filling replenishing loom,

bobbin transferring mechanism, a parter carrier in front of said shuttle box, means for moving I said parter carrier rearwardly toward said shuttle box prior to each transferring operation and returning the same forwardly simultaneously with each said-transferring operation, parting and clamping blades pivotally mounted on said carrier forfmovement between open and closed positions, a blade operating member connected to said blades and moving forwardly and "rearwardlywith said carrier, and a single pivoted cam having :a cam surface engaged by said member to open said blades as the carrier moves rearwardly and another cam surface engaged by said member to close said blades as said carrier moves forwardly.
3. In an automatic filling replenishing loom, the
combination of bobbin transferring mechanism, a lay having a shuttle box, a parter carrier adjacent said shuttle box, means for moving said parter carrier toward said shuttle box prior to each transferring operation and away from said shuttle box'simultaneously with each said transferring operation,aparting and clamping blades movably mounted on said carrier for movement between open and closed positions, a single pivotedcam having cam surfaces on opposite sides of its pivoted axis, and a blade operating lever movable both with said carrier and with respect thereto, said lever engaging and being operated by one: of said cam surfaces for opening said blades and also said lever engaging and being operated by the other of said cam surfaces for closing said blades simultaneously with movement: of said carrier.
4. In an automatic filling replenishing loom,
the combination of bobbin transferring mechanism, a lay having a shuttle box, a parter carri'eradjacent saids'huttle box, means for moving said parter carrier toward said shuttle box prior to each transferring operation and away from said shuttle box simultaneously with each said transferring operation, parting and clamping blades pivotally mounted on said carrier for movement between open and closed positions, a lever pivotally supported by said movable blades, means movable with said carrier and constituting a fulcrum for said lever, and a cam means having a camsurface engaging said lever and pivoting the same about said fulcrum to thereby open said blades as said carrier moves toward said shuttle. box, said cam means having another cam surface engaging said lever and pivoting the same to close said blades as said carrier moves away from said shuttle box.
5. In a filling end parting and clamping mechanism for filling replenishing looms, a carrier, parting and clamping blades pivotally mounted on said carrier, means for moving said carrier and blades to filling receiving position and for withdrawing the same from said position, a lever mounted for bodily movement with said carrier, said lever being pivoted with respect to said carrier for opening and closing said blades, and a single pivoted cam having cam surfaces engaging and pivoting said lever to thereby open and close said blades as said carrier and blades move toward and'from said filling receiving position.
6. In a filling end parting and clamping mechanism for filling replenishing looms, a carrier, parting and clamping blades pivotally mounted on said carrier, means for moving said carrier and blades to filling receiving position and for withdrawing the same from said position, a lever mounted for bodily movement with said carrier, said lever being pivoted with respect to said carrier for opening and closing said blades, and a single pivoted cam having a cam surface engaging and pivoting said lever to thereby open said blades as said carrier and blades move to said filling receiving position, said cam having another cam surface engaging and pivoting said lever to thereby close said blades as said carrier and blades are withdrawn from said position.
7. In a filling end parting and clamping mechanism for filling replenishing looms, a carrier, parting and clamping blades pivotally mounted on said carrier, 'means for moving said carrier and blades to filling receiving position'and for withdrawing the same from said position, a lever supportedby said blades and also by a part which is fixed with respect to said carrier, said lever pivoting about said part for opening and closing said blades, and cam means engaging and pivoting said lever to open said blades as said carrier and blades move to said position, said cam means engaging and pivoting said lever to close said blades as said carrier and blades withdraw from said position.
