This invention relates to protective equipment for receiving valuables and retaining such against unauthorized appropriation.
This invention has utility when incorporated in access interference and control features, especially for safes, as against burglarizing.

Cabinet I is shown having therein security or valuables receiving chamber 2. This chamber 2 has therefrom top opening 3 provided with metal reinforced throat 4 and ledge 5. At the side of the throat4 away from the ledge 5 is bar 6 having effective anchorage in the reinforced throat. This bar 6 is a hinge mounting for armored top closure or plate 1 having handle 8.
This closure plate 1, in'its lowered position, rests against the upper side of the ledge 5. In lifted position this plate 'I elevates chute therewith. This chute comprises drop portion 9 from the region of thebar 6 and inclined portion IO between side plates ll to the plate 1, This portion o, in extending beyond the side plates ll, has free end |2 abut against the lower side of the ledge 5.
It is thus seen that in lifted position of the plate 1, the portion l0 providesa receiving platform for valuables, and that upon swinging of this plate 'I to its lowered position, the platform o then provides an inclined chute to direct the valuables in their passage through the throat 4 and opening 3 into the receiving chamber 2. This access way is so designed that there may be no removal of articles from this chamber 2 by way of the lifted plate 1, for then the portion o, l2, is an eifective interception means.
This safe has additional access thereto by horizontally extending throat I3 to ledge or restriction plate !4 having entrance opening l5, inward from which is ledge !6. In this throat !3, lugs l'l mount hinge bar !8, adjacent one side of the throat as hinge means. Mounted on this bar !8 by brackets IS is closure plate or door 20 having rigid handle 2| remote from its hinge mounting. This door 20, as swung from the throat toward the chamber 2 to closed position, abuts against the ledge 16. This door 20 on the inner side thereof carries lock box 22 in which is located spindle 23. This spindle 23 extends to have terminus 24 slightly inward from the front of the door 20. This counter-sunk terminus of the spindle 23'is shown as having a pair of eccentric seats 25, 26.
Knob 21`is shown as having graduations 28 to cooperate with pointer 29 in Operating tumblers 30 of the lock, said tumblers being on the spindle 23. This knob 21 has shoulder 3! to enter the door 20 in the region of the counter-sunk portion of the terminus of the spindle. From this shoul- I der 3i, there extends prong 32 to register with the seat 25 and split prong 33 as a wedge to engage in seat 26. There is thus a frictional anchoring of this knob with the hardened steel spindle. Acco'dingly, in the event of attack,
there may be shattering or removal of this knob 2'! without injury to the'spindle 24.
The tumblers 30 on the spindle 23 may be as sembled by manipulation of the knob 21 to bring into alignment a series of notches 34 so that pawl 35 may lower thereinto. This pawl 35 has pivotal mounting 36 on bolt 31 normally slidable in way 38 of the lock box 22. Fixed' with this bolt 3? is bolt 39 as 'the looking bolt proper effective to engage backof the ledge |6 with the door in closed position; The bolt 31 has pin 40, from which extends tension spring 4! to pin 42fixed with the box 22 and protruding through slot 43 in the bolt 31. It is thus seen that, at a released position of the bolt 31, it is automatically retracted. As the bolt 31 is connected to the pawl 35, the spindle 23, as turned clockwise (Fig. 4) would positively efiect withdrawal of looking bolt 39.
As the pawl 35`drops into the notches 34 of the several tLunblers of this combination, lock plunger 44 descends and this switch 45, as normally open,
` is thus closed.
Power supply lines 46 to transformer 41 provide ircuit by line 48, to terminal 49, thence by switch member 50, line 5i, to the switch 45, thence by line 52, plunger member 50, terminal 49, line 53 switch disk 60 completes a circuit by line 6! from the transformer 41. This relay 54 has theren winding 62 between the line 55 and the line 6l operable on an escapement, determining the time delay hereunder, for the throwing of the switch to energize the coil 51 to draw armature 51' against the resistance of spring 51" for the release of the bolt 31.
This device hereunder is so effective that the switch 45 may be reopened during the delayed action of the winding 62, but before such is effective to close the switch 60, there is brought about a re-initiating of this time delay sothat its cycle of operation is started over again. It is thus seen that in the manipulation of the spindle 23 a shifting of the pawl 35 out of the notch 34 in the interim wherein there is awaited the chance for the release, there is efiective re-cycling of the time, thus bringing about cumulative delay.
It is to be noted in this disclosure, transformer 41 and time delay 54 are in auxiliary Compartment 63 of the chamber 2, and thereby protected from outside unauthorized interference. The door 20, at open position, precludes any current flow or any operation of the devices of the transformer or relay, in that the door 23 has adjacent its hinge-side lug block 64 carrying insulation sleeve 65 as mo-untings for the plungers 50, normally urged by springs 66 toward the terminals 49 at closed position of the door. At open position of the door, the plungers are swung clear of these terminals.
In opening the door 20, it is to be noted that just inward of this throat, there is inclined way 51 therefrom as a bottom for the chamber 2, thus directing deposit of valuables to repose against rear wall 68. This incline 61 is' also effective in receiving the dump from the opening 3 to have such flow also toward the wall 68 as a factor in increasing inaccessibility thereof from the opening 3.
There is produced hereunder a self-contained electric protective installation requiring electric current for release and even at release requiring time delay for any opening to effect removal, although accessible at all times for instantaneous deposit. These cooperative features with cumulative timing against access, due to the recycling feature, materially contribute to the safeguarding of valuables hereunder.
It is to be understood that the operation of the solenoids or coils 51, 62, is not to be sluggish, and accordingly, the winding or voltage is adapted thereto and may be, in instances, for taking line current instead of through a transformer. While four terminals are shown at the block 64, the' number thereof may depart therefrom according to the winding control set upselected, to increase or decrease.
In the matter of the terminus 24 for the shaft 23, there is suicient door plate 2!) to preclude any attempt to drive this spindle 23 inward from the front, and accordingly, such is not eective to disturb hardened plate or guard 69. With the door 20 open, should there be rotation of the spindle knob 21, this would allow the dog 51' to Swing up into action and thus throw the bolt against closing the door, and there would not be release except with electrical power so to do.
However, this difiiculty is overcome by mounting pin m to protrude through slot 'H of lock box 22 and housing 12. Accordingly, with the knob 27 having been eective to lock the bolt 39 in protruding position, it is'only necessary, with the door open, for the one desiring to close the door, to depress the pin 19 so that this bolt 39 may be withdrawn to permit looking of the door.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A safe having a valuables receiving chamber, an opening thereabove, said safe having a double wall housing, an insulation filler between said walls, a reinforced-metallic throat for the opening extending between the walls and through said filler, a pivot bearing providing bar anchored inside said throat in proximity to the outer wall, a closure plate for the opening hingedly mounted on the bar, there being ledge means at the throat to limit inward swinging of the closure to closure position, and a chute in the throat fixed to' move with the closure and extending downward from the bearing, said chute at lifted position of the closure providing a receiving platform abutting the lower side of the ledge and at lowered position of the closure providing an inclined way into the chamber.
2. A double-walled safe having insulation filler v ber enveloped by said walls, opening means to said chamber provided with metallic throat means, ledge means in the throat means, closure means pivoted at the throat means to Swing from outward of the chamber into the throat means against the ledge means to closed position, and inclined way means in the chamber extending from the closed opening means.
3. A repository comprising a housing providing a protective chamber therein, opening means to said chamber, there being chute means from said opening means, closure means for the opening means, said closure means in open position providing a fence against access to the chamber through the opening, and frame means at the opening means anchored with the housing.
4. A double-walled safe having insulation filler between the walls, a valuables receiving chamber envelopedby said walls, an opening through one of said walls provided with a metallic throat through said filler, a ledge in the throat, closure means at the throat to Swing from outward of the chamber into the throat against the ledge, and hinge mounting means for the closure.
