The present invention relates to bank depositories of the type enabling depositors safely to make deposits after banking hours, and which are commonly known as night depositories. More particularly, the invention relates to the deposit receiving, outside entrance to such depositories.
For the convenience of depositors who are unable to make deposits during regular banking hours, many banks provide a supplementary safe or vault within the bank which connects with an outside entrance by means of a chute. At the entrance to the chute a lockable deposit receptacle is provided which is movable from a charging position in which the deposit is placed (usually contained in a leather envelope) to a discharging position in which the entrance is closed and the deposit is dropped through the chute into the vault. Normally, the receptacle is locked in the discharging position by a key-operated lock actuated by means of the depositors key. Often, however, and particularly when a deposit is of such size as to fit tightly in the receptacle, it fails to drop into the chute. Since, when the receptacle is in a discharging position the entrance is closed, the depositor has no assurance that his deposit has safely entered the chute and the vault and he may relock the entrance with the deposit still in the receptacle.
It is, therefore, one of the principal objects of this invention to provide a deposit receiving and discharging device for the entrance to a night depository which will prevent carelessness on the part of the depositor in ascertaining whether his deposit has safely been discharged therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which incorporates means in the deposit receptacle which are responsive to the weight or pressure of the deposit therein to prevent relocking the depository entrance until the deposit has been discharged or removed therefrom.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a device of the above character which is adapted to be relocked in a closed position and incorporating means preventing removal of the key from the lock while a deposit is in the entrance receptacle.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the parts and combinations F hereinafter set forth with the understanding that various changes may be made therein, such as the size, shape and arrangement of parts and in the substituting equivalents, by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of 5 5 the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood a preferred embodiment thereof has been made the subject of illustration in the accompany drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a night depository entrance with parts broken away to better illustrate features of the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 22 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows, the depository entrance being shown in an open or deposit-receiving position.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows, the depository entrance being shown in a closed or deposit-discharging position.
Figure 4 is a fragmental sectional view taken along the line 44 of Figure 3 showing the associated parts of the locking bolt and bolt-blocking mechanism in an unlocked position.
Figure 5 is a fragmental sectional view taken along the line 55 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a view in perspective of the lock bolt-blocking element. Generally, the invention comprises a cylinder having a transverse passageway therethrough and rotatably mounted within a casing which is embedded in the wall of a bank building. The cylinder is adapted to be rotated about its axis from a deposit-receiving position, where the passageway therein communicates with an entrance opening in the casing, to a deposit-discharging position where the said passage is moved out of communication with the entrance opening, to close the same, and into communication with an exit opening in the casing which connects with a downwardly directed chute leading to a safe conveniently located in the bank building below the level of the depository entrance. The cylinoler is adapted to be locked in the latter position by a key actuated sliding bolt carried by the casing and adapted to be received in a socket in the cylinder. The lock is of the type from which the key may not be withdrawn except when the bolt is in locked position.
' A deposit responsive device, preferably in the form of a spring 1oaded swingable plate forms the floor of, the deposit passage in the cylinder and has an operative connection with a blocking element which is moved thereby, when a deposit is inserted in the passageway, to a position into t hepathof the locking bolt to prevent the bolt remains in the cylinder and he may reopen the depository entrance and adjust the package or remove some of his contents so that the deposit may freely move from the passage in its discharging position into the chute and depository.
I claim:
1. In a depository of the class described, a casing having an entrance and an exit opening, a cylinder rotatably mounted in the casing, said cylinder having a deposit receptacle therein adapted to register successively with the entrance and exit openings upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving to a deposit discharging position, means operative for locking the cylinder in a discharging position, and means including a movable plate member constituting side wall of the receptacle and extending substantially the full depth thereof, said means being actuated by pressure of a deposit on the plate in all positions of the deposit in said receptacle for rendering the locking means inoperative.
2. In a depository of the class described, a casing having an entrance and an exit opening, a cylinder rotatably mounted in the casing, said cylinder having a deposit receptacle therein adapted to register successively with the entrance and exit openings upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving to a deposit discharging position, locking means including a bolt movable in the casing to engage the cylinder and look the same in a discharging position, a blocking member movable to an operative position to prevent engagement of said bolt with said cylinder, and means actuated by a deposit in said receptacle for moving the blocking member to said operative position.

In a depository of the class described, 2. casing having an entrance and an exit opening, a cylinder rotatably mounted in the casing, said cylinder having a deposit receptacle therein adapted to register successively with the entrance and exit openings upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving to a deposit discharging position, locking means including a bolt movable in the casing to engage the cylinder and lock the same in a dis-charging position, a blocking member movable to an operative position to prevent engagement of said bolt with said cylinder, and means including a movable plate member in said receptacle and having a positive connection with the blocking member, said plate member being moved by pressure of a deposit thereon for moving the blocking member to said operative position.
4. In a depository of the class described, a casing having an entrance and an exit opening, a cylinder rotatably mounted in the casing, said cylinder having a deposit receptacle therein adapted to register successively with the entrance and exit openings upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving to a deposit discharging position, locking means including a bolt movable in the casing to engage the cylinder and lock the same in a discharging position, a blocking member movable to an operative position to prevent engagement of said bolt with said cylinder, spring means normally urging the blocking member to an inoperative position, and means opposed to said spring means and actuated by a deposit in said receptacle for moving the blocking member to said operative position.
5. In a depository of the class described, a casing have an entrance and an exit opening, a cylinder rotatably mounted in the casing, said cylinder having a deposit receptacle therein adapted to register successively with the entrance and exit openings upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving to a deposit discharging position, locking means including a bolt slidable in the casing, said cylinder having a socket positioned to receive the bolt when the cylinder is in a discharging position, a blocking member carried by the cylinder and movable to block and unblock the entrance to said socket, means operative for locking the cylinder in a discharging position,
and means actuated by a deposit in said recep' tacle for moving the blocking member to block said socket entrance.
6. In a depository of the class described, a casing having an entrance and an exit opening, a cylinder rotatably mounted in the casing, said cylinder having a deposit receptacle therein adapted to register successively with the entrance and exit openings upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving to a deposit discharging position, locking means including a bolt slidable in the casing, said cylinder having a socket positioned to receive the bolt when the cylinder is in a discharging position, a blocking member carried by the cylinder and movable to block and unblock the entrance to said socket, and means including a movable plate member in said receptacle and having a positive connection with said blocking member, said plate being moved by pressure thereon of a deposit for moving the blocking member to block said socket. 7. In a depository of the class described, a casing having an entrance and an exit opening, a cylinder rotatably mounted in the casing, said cylinder having a deposit receptacle therein adapted to register successively with the entrance and exit openings upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving to a deposit discharging position, locking means including a bolt slidable in the casing, said cylinder having a socket positioned to receive the bolt when the cylinder is in a discharging position, a blocking member carried by the cylinder and movable to block and unblock the entrance to said Socket, and means including a movable plate member in said receptacle and having a positive connection with said blocking member, said plate being moved by pressure thereon of a deposit for moving the blocking member to block said socket, and resilient means normally urging said blocking member in a direction to unblock said socket.
8. In a depository of the class described, a, substantially cylindrical casing having an entrance opening in the cylindrical wall thereof and an exit opening in said wall agularly disposed with respect to said entrance opening, a cylinder mounted in said casing for axial rotation therein, said cylinder having a passageway extending substantially diametrically therethrough adapted to register with said entrance and exit opening respectively upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving position to a deposit discharging position, means operative for locking the cylinder in the deposit discharging position, and means responsive to the presence of a deposit in said passageway for rendering said locking means inoperative.
9. In a depository of the class described, a sub- .stantially cylindrical casing having an entrance opening in the cylindrical wall thereof and an exit opening in said wall angularly disposed with respect to said entrance opening, a cylinder mounted in said casing for axial rotation therein, said cylinder having a passageway extending substaniister awithasaid entrance and exit :opening respectivelynponrotaticn :of the cylinder'irom a deposit receiving :positionto a deposit discharging position,nn;eans cperativeior locking the cylinder in the deposit discharging position and means includingza movable plate member in said passagewayand responsive :to pressure of a deposit thereon iorrender'ing the locking means inoperative.
10. In a depository of the class described, a substantially cylindrical casing having an entrance mpening in the cylindrical Wall thereof and an exit opening in said well angularly disposed with respect. to said entrance opening, a cylinder mounted in :said casing .for axial rotation therein, said cylinder having a passageway extending substantially diametrically therethrough adapted to register with said entrance and exit opening respectively upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving position to a deposit discharging position, locking means including a bolt slidable in an end Wall or the casing, said cylinder having a socket positioned in a corresponding end 'Wall of the cylinder to receive said bolt when the cylinder is in a discharging position, a :blocking member carried by the cylinder and movable to block and unblock the entrance to the socket, and means responsive to the presence of a deposit in said passageway for moving the blocking member to block :sa'id socket entrance.
11. In a depository of the class described, a substantially cylindrical casing having an entrance opening in the cylindrical W811 thereof and an exit opening in :said Wall angularly disposed with respect to said entrance opening, a cylinder mounted in said casing for axial rotation therein, said cylinder having a passageway extending substantially diametrically therethrough adapted to register with said entrance and exit opening respectively upon rotation of the cylinder from a deposit receiving position to a deposit discharging position, locking means including a bolt slidable in an end wall of the casing, said cylinder having a socket positioned in a corre- 45 1,632,536

In a depository of the class described, a substantially cylindrical casing having an entrance opening in the cylindrical wall thereof and an exit opening "in said wall 'angularly disposed with respect to said entrance opening, a cylinder mountedin said casing for axial rotation therein, said cylinder having a passageway extending substantially diametrically therethrough adapted to register with said entrance and exit opening respectively upon rotation of the cylinder from a. deposit receiving position to a deposit discharging position, means operative for locking the cylinder in the deposit discharging position, and means responsive to the presence of a deposit in said passageway for rendering said locking means inoperative, a hinged door member adapted to open and-close said entrance opening, and means including a link having pivotal connections with said door and-cylinder and arranged with respect thereto whereby opening movement of said door moves the cylinder to deposit receiving position and closing movement of said door moves said cylinder to deposit discharging position.
