9 Claims.
My invention relates to drying apparatus, and has particular reference to apparatus for use in drying hair or the hands, or the like, and a principal object of my invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus of this type.
In the drawing accompanying this specification, and forming a part of this application, I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume, and in this drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the embodiment herein illustrated, portions of the supporting pedestal being broken away,
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of said embodiment, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, while Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
The embodiment of my invention herein shown comprises a tubular casing 5, pivotally supported by arms 6, forming part of a supporting pedestal "I, the casing 5 tapering toward the rear, and
having a rear wall 8 provided with an aperture for the passage of the shaft 9 of a motor l0 therethrough, and of sufficient size for snug reception of a boss ll, forming part of the housing of the motor H], the latter secured to the rear wall 8 by bolts I2 passing therethrough and through flanges [3 on the housing of the motor In, the inner end of the shaft 9 of the motor I!) carrying a centrifugal fan l4 operable to draw air toward its center and discharge such air radially outward therefrom.
Supported by the forward edge of the casing 5, and secured thereto by screws 15, is a shell l6, extending into said casing in spaced rela- 'tion with respect thereto and cooperating with said casing to provide an annular passage H, and at its rear having an aperture It disposed axially in line with the fan I 4, also extending forwardly of the forward end of the casing 5, and having secured thereto, as by a rolled seam l9, an annular flange forming the forward portion of a tapered hood member 2|, extending rearwardly into said shell in spaced relation with respect thereto and closed at its rear, cooperating with the shell It to provide an annular passage 22.
Adjacent the forward portion of the hood member 2! is provided a plurality of circumferentially spaced inlet apertures 23, covered by a screen 24 secured at the inner side of the hood member 2| by rivets 25, and providing an inlet area communicating with the passage 22, and through the aperture l8 with the passage 57.
The hood member 2! is also provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings, each accommodating one end of a grommet memher or a conduit pipe 26 opening into the interior of the hood member 2|, through orifice 21, the opposite end of each grommet member or pipe being accommodated in a corresponding opening in the shell it, and communicating with the passage ll, through orifice 28, the grommet members or pipes 25 each being provided with flanges 29 at opposite ends lying against and secured to the opposite remote surfaces of the shell it and the hood member 2|.
An annular heating coil 30 is secured to rear outer surface of the shell It by fasteners 3i, so as to lie Within the passage H and heat the air passing therethrough.
In use, when the motor Ill and heating coil 39 are energized, a stream of air is caused to circulate through the apparatus, such air being drawn partially from without the casing and passing rearwardly through the screened apertures 23, through the passage 22, and the opening it, into the eye of the centrifugal fan I 4, being thrown circumferentially outward by the fan I l, and into the passage I! where it is heated by the coil 30, passing thence through the pipes or ducts 26 back into the hood member 2|, and a substantial portion of the air discharged from the orifices 2'! into the hood member 2| again passes into the inlet apertures 23, thus bringing about recirculation of the air passing through the apparatus, resulting in more rapid and effi- .cient treatment and in conservation of heat energy.
It will be appreciated that the inlet area provided by the apertures 23 substantially embraces the outlet area provided by the orifices 21 of the pipes or ducts 26, and incoming air, in its passage through the apparatus, crosses over the path of the outgoing air, in a manner resembling the figure 8, and hereby produces the characteristic recirculation of the air within the apparatus.
It will be apparent that the embodiment herein described accomplishes the principal object of the invention, and is adapted for uses and purposes not herein particularly referred to, and may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit of my invention, and accordingly it will be understood that such embodiment is illustrative only, and my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim:
1. A recirculating drier, comprising: a casing having a centrifugal ran mounted therein; a hood member mounted in said casing and having a cavity for the accommodation of the object to be treated, and having an inlet and an outlet communicating with said cavity; a shell interposed between said hood member and said fan and with said hood member defining a first passage in communication with the central portion of said fan, and with said casing defining a second passage about the periphery of said fan, said inlet opening into said first passage; and means leading from said second passage through said first passage into communication with said outlet.
2. Apparatus, as of the type described, for subjecting a person to the action of a stream of gaseous-like fluid, comprising: a casing, having its mouth formed to be directed toward and partially receive the object to be treated, said mouth having an inlet area and an outlet area; fluiddirecting means; and fluid-circulating means cooperating with said fluid-directing means to indraw through said inlet area an inflowing stream of fluid, along a predetermined path, and to expel said fluid in an outfiowing stream, along a predetermined path, and through said outlet area, the path of one stream intersecting the path of the other stream; said fluid-circulating means being disposed coaxially with respect to said streams; and said apparatus comprising means whereby said outfiowing stream is expelled about said object, and in proximity to said inflowing stream, to be in part entrained in said inflowing stream, whereby part of said fluid is recirculated.

Apparatus, as of the type described, for subjecting a person to the action of a stream of gaseous-like fluid, comprising: a plurality of nested elements including an outer casing, a hood member defining a cavity for the reception of the object to be treated, and an intermediate shell member, together defining a triple-walled construction, said casing having a portion spaced from said shell to define an air passage, and said shell being spaced from said hood member to define another air passage, both 01'. said passages communicating separately with said cavity; and fluid-circulating means communicating with both of said passages, operating to indraw into one of said passages an inflowing stream of fluid, and to expel said fluid from another of said passages; and said apparatus comprising means whereby said fluid is expelled into said cavity about said object, and in proximity to said inflowing stream, to be in part entrained in said inflowing stream, whereby part of said fluid is recirculated.
4. Apparatus, as of the type described, for subjecting a person to the action of a stream of gaseous-like fluid, comprising: a plurality of nested elements including an outer casing, a hood member defining a cavity for the reception of the object to be treated, and an intermediate shell member, together defining a triple-walled construction, said shell being spaced from said hood member to define a first air passage and said casing having a portion spaced from said shell to define a second air passage; both of said passages communicating with said cavity, and said first passage being closed at its forward extremity; and fluid-circulating means communicating with both of said passages, operating to indraw into one of said passages an inflowing stream of fluid, and to expel said fluid in an outfiowing stream from another of said passages; and said apparatus comprising means whereby said fluid is expelled into said cavity about said object, and in proximity to said inflowing stream, to be in part entrained in said inflowing stream, whereby part of said fluid is recirculated.
5. Apparatus, as of the type described, for subjecting a person to the action of a stream of gaseous-like fluid, comprising: a casing; fluidcirculating means; a hood member and shell member defining a double-walled element disposed within said casing and having a cavity for the accommodation of the object to be treated, said element having an inlet area and an outlet area communicating with said cavity, the walls of said double-walled element defining a first passage communicating with said fluid-circulating means and with one of said areas, and with said casing defining a second passage also communieating with said fluid-circulating means; and means extending through said first passage, communicating with said second passage, and with said other area; said fluid-circulating means cooperating with said passages to indraw through said inlet area an inflowing stream of fluid, and to expel said fluid in an outfiowing stream through said outlet area; and said apparatus comprising means whereby said outfiowing stream is expelled about said object, and in proximity to said infiovving stream, to be in part entrained in said inflowing stream, whereby part of said fluid is recirculated.

Apparatus, as of the type described, for subjecting a person to the action of a stream of gaseous-like fluid, comprising: a casing; fluid circulating means; a double-walled hood member disposed within said casing, and having a cavity formed for the accommodation of the object to be treated, and having an inlet area and an outlet area communicating with said cavity, the walls of said double-walled hood member defining a first passage communicating with said fluid-circulating means and with one of said areas, and with said casing defining a second passage also communicating with said fluid-circulating means; and a grommet member having flanges butting the opposite outer surfaces of the walls or said hood member, and having its body portion extending through said first passage, communicating with said second passage, and with said other area; said fluid-circulating means cooperating with said passages to indraw through said inlet area an inflowing stream of fluid, and to expel said fluid in an outfiowing stream through said outlet area; and said apparatus comprising means whereby said outfiowing stream is expelled about said object, and in proximity to said inflowing stream, to be in part entrained in said inflowing stream, whereby part of said fluid is recirculated.
7. Apparatus, as of the type described, for subjecting a person to the action of a stream of gaseous-like fluid, comprising: a casing; fluid-circulating means; a hood member and shell member defining a double-walled element disposed within said casing, and having a cavity formed for the accommodation of the object to be treated, said hood member having an inlet and an outlet area in the wall thereof, and communicating with said cavity, the walls of said double-walled element defining a first passage communicating with said fluid-circulating means and with one of said areas, and with said casing defining a second passage also communicating with said fluid-circulating means; and means extending through said first passage, communicating with said second passage, and with said other area; and said fluidcirculating means cooperating with said passages to indraw through said inlet area an inflowing stream of fluid, and to expel said fluid in an outflowing stream through said outlet area.

Apparatus, as of the type described, for sub jecting a person to the action of a stream of gaseous-like fluid, comprising: a plurality of nested elements including an outer casing, a hood member defining a cavity for the reception of the object to be treated, and an intermediate shell member, together defining a triple-walled construction, said casing having a portion spaced from said shell to define an air passage, and said shell being spaced from said hood member to define another air passage, both of said passages communicating with said cavity, and one of said 5 passages intersecting the other passage; and fluidcirculating means communicating with both of said passages, operating to indraw into one of said passages an inflowing stream of fluid, and to expel said fluid from another of said passages;
and said apparatus comprising means whereby said fluid is expelled in said cavity about said object, and in proximity to said inflowing stream, to be in part entrained in said inflowing stream, whereby part of said fluid is recirculated.
9. A. hair drying apparatus of the character described comprising an outer housing, an inner hood formed to receive the portion of the head of a patron to be dried, a shell member disposed intermediate said housing and hood to form inner 10 and outer chambers between the hood and housing, said hood having openings through its walls communicating directly with the inner chamber and communicating with the outer chamber through conduits passing through the inner 15 chamber and a fan for circulating air into and out of said hood through said chambers, openings and conduits.
