10 Claims.
The present invention relates to a knockdown display container made of paper-board or the like, which may be collapsed, or shipped flat in bundles to the user.
One of the advantages of the present structure is the construction of a dual display container of this type from a single, flat blank.
Other advantages are in the provision of two compartments from a single blank, one compartment forming a storage compartment for goods held therein, the other compartment forming an attached goods display compartment, which is foldable into the storage compartment, and a common cover for both compartments, when the carton is closed, said cover being cut and scored to permit its erection into an advertising display.
These and other advantages will be apprehended as the herein description proceeds, and it is obvious that modifications may be made in the structure herein, without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.

The container as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may be made up from either blank of Figs. 6 and '7, and while the blanks are geometrically dissimilar, they both, when formed orerected into display, shipping containers are substantially of identical appearance.
Like parts, functioning the same in either blank are give like indices, in the drawings.
The blank of Fig. 6 discloses a blank having a glue flap 24, for glueing to the exposed edge of panel 4, to cause its erection into a carton body as in Fig. 1, while the blank of Fig. 7 discloses a series of lock tab connecting panels A, B, D, and
E, having interlockable tabs 50, 49, 5 I, and 52, re-- spectively, thereon, to permit forming the carton body up by hand, instead of machine, as in Fig. 6.
The blank of Fig. 6, has a series of associate connecting panels 4, 5, 6, and I, each scored from its adjacent panel by score lines 34, 35, 36, re-
spectively with the glue flap 24 scored from panel I.
When the' glue flap 24 is afllxed to the exposed edge of panel 4, as in Fig. 1, these panels form the surrounding walls of the storage portion I of the container, which is then completed by closing the bottom forming flap members 8, 9, I0, and I I, these latter members being in alinement .with. each other, are cut from their adjacent flaps and scored from their associate panels 4 to I inclusive by a common score line 33. Flaps 9 and II are plain flaps and when inturned form the inner bottom, as in Fig. l, of the storage compartment. After the inner flaps 9 and II are inturned on score line 33, the two lock tab flaps 8 and I are inturned, the ears or tabs 25-25, on flap I0, being introduced into lock slits 26-26 in flap 8, and as in Fig. 3, the flaps 8 and I0 thus form the outer bottom and bottom locking means.
The panel 6 has scored therefrom, by a score line 38, a series of panels I3, I4, I5, I6, l1, and I8, each of these panels being respectively scored. from its adjacent panel by score lines 39, 40, 4|, 42, and 43. a
Panel I4, which forms the rearwall of the goods holding display compartment I, as in Fig. 1, has on its two opposing side edges, a pair of side forming panels I9 and 20, these being defined from panel I4, by score lines 35 and 36.
Side forming panels I9 and 20, have each, at one end thereof, two bottom closing flaps 23-23, the latter being defined from said panels by score lines a and b.
Side forming panels I9 and 20, have each on their opposite, outer edges lock flaps 2| and 22 respectively, said flaps being defined from said panels by score lines 44 and. The lock flaps each carry near their outer ends tabs 21-28, whereby, when these flaps and the side forming panels are bent rectangularly, the lock tabs 21-28 are interlocked to form the inner crossing brace, as at 2I-22, Fig. 5, for the front wall I6 of the low front wall of the display compartment I'.
After the lock flaps 2I-22 are joined as above described, the two bottom closing flaps 23-23 are bent in on their score lines a and b and panel I is bent in, to overlay flaps 23-23, on its score line, 40 as in Fig. 5. Panel I6 is then bent at its score line 4| to lay over the face of the locked flaps 2I-22, as in Figs-1 and 4. This action brings the score line 42 between panels I 6 and I1 in alinement with the top edges of the joined lock flaps 2I-22, whereupon the panel I1 is pushed down into the display compartment I, as
in Fig. 4, and panel I8, reversely bent on its score line 43, forms an inner liner for the bottom of the display compartment, or it may be pulled upwardly to form a false bottom as in Fig. 4, shown dotted at 56'.
The main rear wall forming panel 4, has a cover panel, generally denoted by 2, defined therefrom by a score line 32. The cover 2 is partially cut into a contoured display panel 3, at about its middle, the panel 3 being bendable upon itself, as in Fig. l, at the score lines 3I--3I, and by means of the tuck flap I2, defined by score line 30 from cover panel 2, is tucked back against rear panel 4, tuck fiap I2 being slipped in behind the goods, not shown, in the storage compartment I.
When the container is thus erected, the display compartment may first be loaded with the desired goods, and then infolded, into the storage compartment, on its score lines 38 and 39, so that the outer front wall IQ of the display compartment rests face down upon the inner bot-, tom forming panels 9 and II, with the exposed face of panel I3, and the front edge of the panel I4 at the score line 39 resting against the inside face of panel 6. Then the storage compartment may be completely filled with goods and the cover 2 and its tuck flap closed over the filled container, and the package put into a shipping case.
In an alternate form of packing the container after erection, the display container, as in Fig. 2, may be left outside of the storage container I, by being placed upright with its back wall I4 in contact with the front of panel Ii as at D, Fig. 2, both containers being then filled with goods and the cover 2 and tuck flap I2, then overfolded on the goods, with tuck fiap I2, tucked inside of wall I6 of the display container I.

to form a container, similar to that described for Fig. 6, will now be disclosed. It is understood that the features and functions above described for the container of Fig. 6, as erected also apply to the container erected from blank of Fig. 7, which is wholly assembled by hand, from the fiat whereas, blank of Fig. 6 may be glued in a machine, and while fiat, is folded once on score lines 34 and 36 in a collapsed, space saving condition.
In Fig. 7 a large number of the panels, fiaps, tabs and score lines are similar to those disclosed in Fig. 6, both in structure and function, though they are somewhat diiferently arranged.
The storage body forming panels of Fig. 7 comprise panels 4, 5, 6, and I and lock tab panels A, B, C, D, and E.
Panel C forms the bottom of the storage compartment I and the side wall forming panels 5 and 1 are defined therefrom by score lines 41-48. The panels 5 and I, in both blanks are cut with triangular edges 29-29, and which, as shown in the main figures, give a sloping efi'ect to the container in open display.
Panels 5 and I have each lock tab panels 13 and A respectively, said latter panels being defined from the former by score lines 4646. The edges of panels 5 and I, opposite panels 13 and A have front forming tab locking flaps E and D respectively, these being defined from panels 5 and I by score lines 4545. The panels B, A, D and E each have, on their outer ends interlocking tabs 49, 50, 5|, and 52, respectively.
The bottom forming panel C has connected thereto aback, outer wall forming panel 4 defined therefrom by a score line 46, and in turn the cover panel 2 is defined therefrom by score lines 32 and, in turn the cover tuck flap I2 is defined from the cover panel 2, by a score line 3.. The cover panel 2 is cut out and scored at its mid-portion as described for Fig. 6.
Bottom forming panel C has defined therefrom 5 by score line 45 a display compartment front wall forming panel 6, defined therefrom by score line 45, and the remaining scored panels I3 to I8 inclusive and I9 to 23 inclusive are as described for Fig. 6, to form the display compartment I'. 10 One added'panel 53' Fig. '7, scored from and between panels I'I-I8 by score lines 43 and 53 is not shown in blank Fig. 6. The function-of this added panel as shown dotted as a pull up '3', Fig. 4, has been described as a false bottom.
In erecting the blank of Fig. 7 .ato a display container, triangular panels 5I are bent up on scorelines4'I-48,then the back wall forming panels A--B are bent towards each other on common score line 46 and the lock tabs 49-40 inter- 20 locked as shown dotted, Fig. 2. The front wall forming panels D and E are then bent on the common score line 45 to each other, and interlocked at their ends by the lock tabs 5I-52. At this stage the main storage compartment I has' been formed. Then the display compartment is erected by bending side panels I9-2'0 upwardly on their score lines 41-48, forming side panels as in Figs. 1, 4, 5, and 6, and then the front forming tab lock panels 2I--22 are bent on their 30 score lines 44-44 toward each other and their ends interlocked by lock tabs 2I28, as shown in Fig. 5.
The end flaps 23--23 are then bent inwardly on their score lines ab, and as in Fig. 5, bottom 35 forming panel I5 is bent up on its score line 40, to overlay. the'fiaps 23-23, front forming panel I6 is then bent on its score line 4| on to the front face of tab locks 2 I22, Fig. 4, whichbrlngs the score line 42 even with the top edges of lock panels 2I22 and the panels I1, 53', and I8 are then pushed down into the display compartment I, as indicated in full and dotted lines in Fig. 4. As described, this leaves the display compartment connected to the top front edge of panel 6 by score lines 33 and 45, thus permitting the display compartment to be disposed in any desired arrangement, as shown and described, relative to the storage compartment.
The cover panel 2 and tuck I 2 of Fig. '7, are then bent up on score line 46 of backwall forming panel 4, so that this latter panel lies against rear wall forming lock panels A and B, as at D FIg. 2, and the cover and tuck panels are arranged in covering position as described for Fig. 7.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that both containers as erected from either blank, Fig. 6 or Fig. '7, form substantially identical containers, and in erected assembly provide similar opportunities for the holding and displaying of goods, and arrangement of component parts.
In setting up the containers for goods display, the display compartment may be arranged at an angle as in Fig. l, or it may be arranged to stand vertically as in Fig. 2, for display, or the display compartment may be overfolded into the storage compartment I, to provide a stepped display container.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A display box made from one sheet of paperboard comprising a main container having a rear wall and a relatively low front wall, said container having an open top; a relatively movable container having a high rear wall and a relatively low front wall, said latter container also having an open top; a hinge panel connecting the low wall of said main container and said high wall, said panel being vertically disposed so that the two last mentioned walls may be engaged to render the open tops continuous, and a cover panel continuous with the first mentioned rear wall and extensible over both of the open tops.
2. A box made from one sheet of material comprising a main container having a rear wall and a relatively low front wall, said container having an open top; a relatively movable display container having a high rear wall and a relatively low front well, said latter container also having an open top; a hinge panel connecting the low wall of said main container and said high wall, said panel being vertically disposed so that the two last mentioned walls may engage to render the open tops continuous, a cover panel continuous with the first mentioned rear wall whereby to cover both of the open tops, and a flap extending from the front of the cover panel and engageable against the front wall of the display container in closing relation therewith.
3.- A counter display box made from one sheet of paperboardcomprising a main container including side walls having downwardly and forwardly inclined top edges; a second container having side walls with inclined top edges which are practically aligned with the first edges; said respective containers including rear and front walls, the top portion of the front wall of the main container being relatively high, and the tops of the other members of said front and rear walls being disposed on planes which are below the horizontal plane of said portion, and an inclined panel connecting the top of the front wall of the first container with the top of the rear wall of the second container.

A box made from one sheet of material comprising a storage container having a front wall; a hinge panel extending from said wall; and a display container carried by said panel and swingable into the storage container; said display container including a front wall and having a bottom continuous therewith, a rear wall connecting the bottom and said panel, end panels continuous with said rear wall, and lock flaps extending from said end panels and having mutually embracing ends engaged against the last mentioned front wall.

A box made from one sheet of paperboard comprising a storage container having a bottom and front and rear walls; a hinge panel extending from said front wall: and a relatively small display container carried by said panel and swingable into the storage container; saiddisplaycontainer including a front wall and having a bottom continuous therewith, a rear wall connecting said bottom and said panel, end panels continuous with said rear wall, said last mentioned front wall being engageable against the first mentioned bottom in the, stored position of the display container. said second mentioned rear wall being then uppermost, and there being a storage space between the bottom of the display container and -therearwallofthefirstcontainer;andafiap continuous with the first mentioned rear wall and bendable downwardly onto the rear wall of said display container, whereby to cover said stor- 58 9 6. A box made from one sheet of material comprising a storage container having a bot tom and front and rear walls: a hinge panel extending from said front wall; a relatively small display container carried by said panel and swingable into the storage container; said display container including a front wall and hav- 5 ing a bottom continuous therewith, a rear wall connecting said bottom and said panel, end panels continuous with said rear wall, lock flaps extending from said end panels and having mutually embracing ends engaging the second mentioned front wall, said flaps and the associated front wall being engageable against the first mentioned bottom in the stored position of the display container, said second mentioned rear wall being then uppermost, and there being a 15 storage space between the bottom of the display container and the rear wall of the first container; and a flap continuous with the first mentioned rear wall and bendable downwardly to the rear wall of said display container, whereby 2 to cover said storage space.
- 7. A box made from one sheet of material and comprising a storage container having a front wall; a hinge panel extending from said wall; and a display container carried by said panel 25 and swingable into the storage container; said display container including a bottom, a rear wall connecting said bottom and said panel, end panels continuous with said rear wall, lock flaps extending from said end panels and having mutually engaging front ends; a front wall continuous with said bottom and engaging the outer faces of said lock'flaps, and another panel extending from the last mentioned front wall and engaging the inner faces of said flaps.
8. The herein described box comprising a sheet of material which forms a storage container having a hinge panel extending therefrom; a relatively small container carried by said panel and swingable into the storage container; said second container including front and rear walls, an interposed bottom and a false bottom.
9. A box made from one sheet of paperboard comprising a storage container having a front wall: a hinge panel extending from said wall; and a relatively small container carried by said panel and swingable into the storage container; said small container including a bottom, a rear wall connecting said bottom and said panel, end panels continuous with said rear wall, lock flaps extending from said end panels and having mutually clasping front ends: a front wall continuous with said bottom and engaging the outer faces of said lock flaps; sub-panels en aginl; the respective inner faces of said lock flaps and said rear wall, one of said sub-panels being continuous with the last mentioned front wall, and another panel disposed between said sub-panels and spaced from said bottom, whereby to pro- 00 vide a compartment, as described.
10. A box made from one sheet of paperboard comprising a main storage container including front and rear walls' and having a substantially fiat bottom and an open top; a second display as container outside of said storage container and including also a fiat bottom and having an open top, said second container having a rear wall hinge y engaging said front wall. and a cover continuous with the first mentioned rear wall 10 and extensible to cover both open tops of said containers.
