(Cl. 22927) The invention relates to a collapsible open top tray style display container having bottom and upstanding peripheral walls and having transverse and longitudinal divider panels between the upstanding walls, and more particularly, to an improved locking arrangement between the separate panels for holding the collapsible container in the set up condition.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved collapsible display container formed from foldable paperboard, the separate panels of the container having improved locking cooperation with one another to permit quick and easy assembly of the container by the user to the set up condition.
Another object of this invention is to provide a display container having a bottom wall and opposed pairs of peripheral upstanding side and end walls contiguous with the bottom wall, the bottom wall having inner and outer panels hingedly supporting longitudinal and transverse divider panels, and the side walls having tuck-in flaps inserted between the bottom Wall inner and outer panels and held by locking tabs'in place so as to maintain the container in the set up condition.
In order that these and other objects can be more fully appreciated, reference is herein made to the following specification, including as a part thereof the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now specifically to FIGS. 1-5 of the drawings the disclosed display container 10 includes a bottom wall 12 and opposed pairs of substantially parallel peripheral side walls 14 and end walls 16 and 17 upstanding at substantially 90 therefrom to define a tray structure open at the top. A pair of longitudinal divider panels 18 are disposed in back-to-back relationship to one another between the side walls 14 and a pair of transverse divider panels 19 and 20 are disposed between the end walls 16 and 17. As such, the container is divided into a plurality of carrying bins or cells 21 within which the packages displayed can be conveniently supported. This container has particular utility for carrying and displaying the bag or pouch type packages, such as commonly used for packing powdered soup or drink concentrates. An identifying display panel 22 is hinged to the rearward end wall 17 for readily identifying the particular package. Also for this purpose, the side walls 14 are tapered from the rearward end wall 17 at approximately the height of the package carried to the forward end wall 16 at a lesser height to show the front of the package.
As can be seen in FIGS. 2, 3 and 5, each of the side walls 14 includes an inner panel 24 and an outer panel 26 hinged together at their upper edges along horizontal hinge line 27, and the forward end wall 16 includes an inner panel 29 and an outer panel 30 hinged together at their upper edges along horizontal hinge line 31. The bottom wall 12 includes pairs of inner and outer panels, the inner panels 34 being hinged at theiroutboard edges on hinge lines 35 to the lower edge of the side wall inner panels 24 and meeting medially at their inboard edges. The outer bottom wall panels 36 and 37 are hinged at their outboard edges to the lower edges of the end walls, the outer panel 36 being hinged along hinge line 38 to the lower edge of the rearward end wall 17 and the outer panel 39 being hinged along hinge line 40 to the lower edge of the forward end wall outer panel 30.
The divider panels are hinged on the respective inboard edges of the bottom wall panels, the longitudinal divider panels 18 being hinged along hinge lines 43 to the bottom wall inner panels 34, and the transverse divider panels 19 and 20 being hinged along hinge lines 47 and 48 to the bottom wall outer panels 36 and 37, respectively. The bottom wall inner panels 34 have transverse slot means 50 formed therein extending across the respective panels for receipt of the transverse divider panels 19 and 20. The slot means 50 terminate at serrated knife cut slots 52 in the longitudinal divider panels 18, and the transverse divider panels have aligned complementary serrated knife cut slots 54 open toward slots 52 to fit frictionally together for fixing the panels relative to one another. To assist further in maintaining the set up display container secured, tuck-in flaps 56 are formed on the lower edges of the side wall outer panels 26 to extend between the inner and outer bottom wall panels. The tuck-in flaps 56 have openings 58 adjacent the hinged connection 57, and retaining tabs 60 are formed from bottom wall inner panels 34 to be coplanar with side wall inner panels 24 and be received in locking engagement within the tuck-in flap openings 58. Shallow recesses 61 are formed in the bottom wall outer panels 36 and 39 to receive the tabs 60 without interference. This locking cooperation of the tuck-in flaps between the inner and outer bottom wall panels and the retaining tabs within the locking openings therein maintain the container in rigid set up condition.
In the embodiment disclosed in FIGS. 1-5, a manufacturers joint formed by flap 62 secured to the rearward end panel 17 forms in the pre-assembled condition a tubular structure which can be shipped flat to the eventual user. To assemble the container, the tubular structure is squared and the bottom wall inner panels 34 and the longitudinal divider panels 18 are folded inwardly about their respective hinge lines into the interior of the container. The outer side wall panels 26 are folded in faceto-face relationship with the inner panels 24, and the flaps 56 are folded under the bottom wall inner panels 34 and the retaining tabs 60 locked in place within the openings 58. The bottom wall outer panels 36 and 39 and the transverse divider panels 19 and 20 are thereafter positioned in place, with the divider panels fitting within the transvers slot means 50 in the bottom wall inner panels 34.
FIGS. 6-8 disclose an embodiment of the display container which eliminates the manufacturers joint. The blank in most respects is identical to that disclosed in FIG. 5, so that the components are numbered the same except with the sufiix a added. In the blank, the break in the peripheral panels is displaced from between the rearward end wall panel 17 and the side wall panel 24 to between the side wall inner panel 24a and the forward end wall inner panel 29a. In addition, a locking panel 66 is hinged along line 67 to the lower edge of the forward end wall inner panel 29a, and is adapted to overlie the bottom wall inner panel 34a. Aligned slots 70 and 71 are formed in the back-to-back disposed longitudinal divider panels 18a and the locking panel, respectively, so as to lock the locking panel in place. Tuck-in flap 73 is hinged to the forward edge of the separated side wall inner panel 24a, and is adapted to fit between the forward end Wall inner and outer panels. The slot 71 on the locking panel 66 is contoured convex away from the hinge line 68 about which the entire front wall panel assembly pivots relative to the side wall panel in order to permit insertion of the locking panel between the longitudinal divider panels without interference thereby.
To assemble this display container, it is desirable to position the bottom wall inner panels, the side wall outer panels and tuck-in flaps, the longitudinal divider panels, and the rearward bottom wall outer panel and the transverse divided; and then to position the locking panel 66 and tuck-in flap 73 in place; and subsequently the forward bottom wall outer panel and transverse divider.
While only specific embodiments of the subject display container have been disclosed, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that modifications can be made therein Without departing from the spirit of this invention. Accordingly, it is desired that the invention be limited only by the claims hereinafter following.
What is claimed is:
1. A display container formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard, comprising in combination:
(a) a bottom wall and opposed pairs of side and end walls hinged thereto and upstanding therefrom to form a structure open at the top;
(b) each of said side walls and the forward one of said end walls including inner and outer panels hingedly interconnected at their upper corresponding edges;
(c) said bottom wall including opposed pairs of inner and outer panels hingedly connected to lower edges of the side and end walls, respectively;
(d) the bottom wall inner panels having outboard edges hinged to respective side wall inner panels and having inboard edges meeting medially of the side walls, and having transverse slot means extending between the side walls;
(e) a pair of longitudinal divider panels hingedly connected to the bottom wall inner panels at corresponding inboard edges thereof and upstanding in back-toback relationship;
(f) one of said bottom wall outer panels being hingedly connected at its outboard edge to the lower edge of the forward end wall outer panel and the other bottom wall outer panel being hingedly connected at its outboard edge to the lower edge of the rearward end wall, and the outer bottom wall panels presenting their inboard edges in substantial alignment with the transverse slot means;
(g) a pair of transverse divider panels hingedly connected at their lower ends to the inboard edges of the bottom wall outer panels and upstanding therefrom to extend through the transverse slot means;
(h) the longitudinal and transverse divider panels having aligned complementary serrated knife cut slots open toward one another to fit frictionally together for fixing the panels relative to one another;
(i) tuck-in flaps hinged to the lower edges of the side wall outer panels and extending between the inner and outer bottom wall panels and having openings adjacent the hinged connection;
(j) retaining tabs formed from the lower edge of the bottom wall inner panels to be coplanar with the side wall inner panels and be received within the tuck-in flap openings;
(k) a locking panel hingedly connected to the lower edge of the forward end wall inner panel and extending in face-to-face relationship with the bottom inner panel;
(1) the locking and the longitudinal divider panels having aligned slots open toward one another to fit together for fixing the panels relative to one another;
(in) the forward end wall inner panel being hinged to the inner panel of one of the side walls and being separated from the inner panel of the other side wall, and the inner panel of the other side wall having a flap hinged thereto.
2. A display container formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard, comprising in combination:
(a) a bottom wall and opposed pairs of side and end walls hinged thereto and upstanding therefrom to form a structure open at the top;
(h) each of said side walls and the forward one of said end walls including inner and outer panels hingedly interconnected at their upper corresponding edges;
(0) said bottom wall including opposed pairs of inner and outer panels hingedly connected to lower edges of the side and end walls;
(d) the bottom wall inner panels being hinged to respective side wall inner panels and meeting medially of the side walls, and having transverse slot means extending between the side walls;
(e) a pair of longitudinal divider panels hingedly connected to the bottom wall inner panels and upstanding therefrom in back-to-back relationship;
(f) one of said bottom wall outer panels being hingedly connected to the forward end wall outer panel and the other bottom wall outer panel being hingedly connected to the rearward end wall, and the outer bottom wall panels presenting their inboard edges in substantial alignment with the transverse slot means;
(g) a pair of transverse divider panels hingedly connected to the inboard edges of the bottom wall outer .panels and upstanding therefrom to extend through the transverse slot means;
(h) the longitudinal and transverse divider panels having aligned complementary serrated knife cut slots open toward one another to fit frictionally together for fixing the panels relative to one another;
(i) tuck-in flaps hinged to the side wall outer panels and extending between the inner and outer bottom Wall panels and having openings adjacent the hinged connection;
(j) retaining tabs formed from the bottom wall inner panels to be coplanar with the side wall inner panels and be received within the tuck-in flap openings;
(k) a locking panel hingedly connected to the forward end wall inner panel and extending in faceto-face relationship with the bottom wall inner panel;
(1) the locking panel and the longitudinal divider panels having aligned slots open toward one another to fit together for fixing the panels relative to one another;
(m) the forward end wall inner panel being hinged to the inner panel of one of the side walls and being separated from the inner panel of the other side wall, and the inner panel of the other side wall having a flap hinged thereto.
3. A display container formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard, comprising in combination:
(a) a bottom wall and opposed pairs of side and end walls hinged thereto and upstanding therefrom to form a structure open at the top;
(b) each of said side walls and the forward one of said end walls including inner and outer panels hingedly interconnected at their upper corresponding edges;
(0) said bottom wall including opposed pairs of inner and outer panels hingedly connected to lower edges of the side and end walls;
(d) the bottom wall inner panels having outboard edges hinged to one pair of upstandnig walls and having inboard edges meeting medially thereof, and having sl-ot means extending therebetween;
(e) a pair of divider panels hingedly connected to the bottom wall inner panels at corresponding inboard edges thereof and upstanding in back-to-back relationship;
(f) said bottom wall outer panels having outboard edges hinged to the other pair of upstanding walls and presenting their inboard edges in substantial alignment with the slot means;
(g) a pair of divider panels hingedly connected at their lower ends to the inboard edges of the bottom wall outer panels and upstanding therefrom to extend through the slot means;
(h) the pairs of divider panels having aligned complementary serrated knife cut slots open toward one another to fit frictionally together for fixing the panels relative to one another;
(i) tuck-in flaps hinged to the lower edges of the side wall outer panels and extending between the inner and outer bottom wall panels and having openings adjacent the hinged connection;
(j) retaining tabs formed from the lower edge of the bottom Wall inner panels to be coplanar with the side wall inner panels and be received within the tuck-in flap openings.
4. A display container formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard, comprising in combination:
(a) a bottom wall and opposed pairs of side and end walls hinged thereto and upstanding therefrom to form a structure open at the top;
(b) each of said side walls and the forward one of said end walls including inner and outer panels hingedly interconnected at their upper corresponding edges;
(0) said bottom wall including opposed pairs of inner and outer panels hingedly connected to lower edges of the side and end walls, respectively;
(d) the bottom wall inner panels having outboard edges hinged to respective side wall inner panels and having inboard edges meeting medially of the side walls, and having transverse slot means extending between the side walls;
(e) a pair of longitudinal divider panels hingedly connected to the bottom wall inner panels at corresponding inboard edges thereof and upstanding in back-toback relationship;
(f) one of said bottom wall outer panels being hingedly connected at its outboard edge to the lower edge of the forward end wall outer panel and the other bottom Wall outer panel being hingedly connected at its outboard edge to the lower edge of the rearward end wall, and the outer bottom wall panels presenting their inboard edges in substantial alignment with the trans verse slot means;
(g) a pair of transverse divider panels hingedly connected at their lower ends to the inboard edges of the bottom wall outer panels and upstanding therefrom to extend through the transverse slot means;
(h) the longitudinal and transverse divider panels having aligned complementary slots open toward one another to fit frictionally together for fixing the panels relative to one another;
(i) tuck-in flaps hinged to the lower edges of the side wall outer panels and extending between the inner and outer bottom wall panels and having openings adjacent the hinged connection;
(j) retaining tabs formed from the lower edge of the bottom wall inner panels to be coplanar with the side wall inner panels and be received within the tuck-in flap openings.
5. A display container formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard, comprising in combination:
(a) a bottom wall and opposed pairs of side and end walls hinged thereto and upstanding therefrom to form a structure open at the top;
(b) each of said side walls and the forward one of said end walls including inner and outer panels hingedly interconnected at their upper corresponding edges;
(c) said bottom wall including opposed pairs of inner and outer panels hingedly connected to lower (e) a pair of longitudinal divider panels hingedly connected to the bottom wall inner panels and upstanding therefrom;
(f) one of said bottom wall outer panels being hingedly connected to the forward end wall outer panel and the other bottom Wall outer panel being hingedly connected to the rearward end wall, and the outer bottom wall panels presenting their inboard edges in substantial alignment with the transverse slot means;
(g) a pair of transverse divider panels hingedly connected to the inboard edges of the bottom wall outer panels and upstanding therefrom to extend through the transverse slot means;
(h) the longitudinal and transverse divider panels having aligned complementary slots open toward one another to fit frictionally together for fixing the panels relative to one another;
(i) tuck-in flaps hinged to the side wall outer panels and extending between the inner and outer bottom wall panels and having openings adjacent the hinged connection;
(j) retaining tabs formed coplanar with the side wall inner panels to be received within the tuck-in flap openings;
(k) a locking panel hingedly connected to the forward end wall inner panel and extending in face-to-face relationship with the bottom wall inner panel;
(I) the locking panel and the longitudinal divider panels having aligned slots open toward one another to fit together; i
(m) the forward end wall inner panel being hinged to the inner panel of one of the side walls and being separated from the inner panel of the other side wall, and the inner panel of the other side wall having a flap hinged thereto.
6. A display container formed from a unitary blank of foldable paperboard, comprising in combination:
(a) a bottom wall and opposed'pairs of side and end walls hinged thereto and upstanding therefrom to form a structure open at the top;
(b) each of said side walls and the forward one of said end walls including inner and outer panels hingedly interconnected at their upper corresponding edges;
(c) said bottom wall including opposed pairs of inner and outer panels hingedly connected to lower edges of the side and end walls, respectively;
(d) the bottom wall inner panels being hinged to re spective side wall inner panels and having transverse slot means extending between the side walls;
(e) a pair of longitudinal divider panels hingedly connected to the bottom wall inner panels;
(if) one of said bottom wall outer panels being hinged to the forward end wall outer panel and the other bottom wall outer panel being hinged to the rearward end wall;
(g) a pair of transverse divider panels hingedly connected to the bottom wall outer panels and upstanding therefrom to extend through the transverse slot means;
(h) the longitudinal and transverse divider panels hav ing aligned complementary slots open toward one another to fit frictionally togethere;
(i) tuck-in flaps hinged to the side wall outer panels and extending between the inner and outer bottom wall panels and having openings adjacent the hinged connection;
(j) retaining tabs formed coplanar with the side wall inner panels to be received within the tuck-in flap openings;
(k) the forward end wall inner panel being hinged to the inner panel of one of the side walls and being separated from the inner panel of the other side wall, and the inner panel of the other side wall having a flap hinged thereto to fit between the forward end wall inner and outer panels.
7. A unitary blank of foldable paperboard for forming a display container, comprising in combination:
(a) a plurality of side wall and forward and rearward end wall panels hinged together on substantially parallel generally vertical hinge lines;
(b) a plurality of inner and outer bottom wall panels hinged to the side and end wall panels on substantially parallel generally horizontal hinge lines;
(c) a plurality of longitudinal and transverse divider panels hinged to the bottom wall panels on substantially parallel generally horizontal hinge lines;
((1) the bottom wall inner panels having slot means extending between the side wall panels and the longitudinal divider panels and extending generally in the vertical direction;
(e) the longitudinal and transverse divider panels having aligned complementary serrated knife cut slots open toward one another and extending generally in the vertical direction operable to fit frictionally together;
(f) outer side wall panels hinged to the first mentioned side wall panels on hinge lines inclined from the horizontal substantially equal angles;
(g) tuck-in flaps hinged to the outer side wall panels on hinge lines inclined from the last mentioned hinge lines toward the vertical angles substantially equal to the previously mentioned angle and having openings adjacent the hinged connection;
(h) retaining tabs formed from the bottom wall inner panels operable to extend vertically coplanar with the first mentioned side wall panels and be received within the tuck-in flap openings;
(i) a locking panel hinged to the forward end wall panel on a generally horizontal hinge line;
(j) the locking panel having a slot open away from its hinge line and the longitudinal divider panels having slots extending substantially on their hinge lines operable to open toward one another and to fit together;
(k) the forward end wall panel being hinged at one of its end edges to one of the first mentioned side wall panels on a generally vertical hinge line and being separated at its opposite end edge from the other side wall panel, and the other side wall panel having a flap hinged thereto about a generally vertical hinge line.
8. A unitary blank of fold-able paperboard for forming a display container, comprising in combination:
(a) a plurality of side wall and forward and rearward end wall panels hinged together on generally vertical hinge lines;
(b) a plurality of inner and outer bottom wall panels hinged to the side and end Wall panels on generally horizontal hinge lines;
(c) a plurality of longitudinal and transverse divider panels hinged to the bottom wall panels on generally horizontal hinge lines;
(d) the bottom wall inner panels having slots means extending between the side wall panels and the longitudinal divider panels;
(e) the longitudinal and transverse divider panels having aligned complementary slot means open toward one another operable to fit frictionally together;
(f) outer side wall panels hinged on one edge to the first mentioned side wall panels;
(g) tuck-in flaps hinged to the opposite edge of the outer side wall panels and having openings adjacent the hinged connection;
(h) retaining tabs formed from the bottom wall inner panels operable to be coplanar with the first mentioned side wall panels and be received within the tuckin flap openings;
(i) a locking panel hinged to the forward end wall panel on a horizontal hinge line;
(j) the locking panel having a slot open away from its hinge line and the longitudinal divider panels having slots on their hinge lines open toward one another operable to fit together.
9. A corner construction for a container having a pair of interconnected, double-ply walls disposed at right angles to each other, comprising:
(a) a first wall having inner and outer panels disposed in back-to-back relation and being hingedly interconnected at corresponding edges located remote from the corner;
(b) a second wall having inner and outer panels disposed in back-to-back relation;
(c) the inner panels of the respective walls being hingedly interconnected at the corner, and the outer panels of the respective walls presenting, adjacent the corner, edges which are free from hinged connection to each other;
(d) a retaining flap hinged to the free edge of said first wall outer panel and extending inwardly therefrom and normal thereto between said second wall inner and outer panels and having an opening therein adjacent the hinge line;
(e) a locking tab formed of material cut from said second wall inner panel and disposed in the plane of said first Wall inner panel to extend therefrom beyond said second wall inner panel and through said opening in said flap to secure said first wall panels together;
(f) means for securing said second wall panels in backto-back relation to confine said flap therebetween.
10. A corner construction for a container having three interconnected, double-ply walls disposed at right angles to each other, comprising:
(a) first and second walls each having inner and outer panels disposed in back-to-back relation and being hingedly interconnected at corresponding edges;
(b) a third wall having inner and outer panels disposed in back-to-back relation;
(c) the inner panels of the first and second walls being hingedly interconnected and the inner panels of the first and third walls being hingedly interconnected, the outer panels of the second and third walls being hingedly interconnected, and the outer panels of the first and second walls and of the first and third walls presenting edges which are free from hinged connection to each other;
(d) a retaining flap hinged to the free edge of said first wall outer panel and extending inwardly therefrom and normal thereto between said third wall inner and outer panels and having an opening therein adjacent the hinge line;
(e) a locking tab formed of material cut from said third wall inner panel and disposed in the plane of said first wall inner panel to extend therefrom beyond said third wall inner panel and through said opening in said flap to secure said first wall panels together;
(f) means for securing said third wall panels in backto-back relation to confine said flap therebetween.

Claims (1)

1. A DISPLAY CONTAINER FORMED FROM A UNITARY BLANK OF FOLDABLE PAPERBOARD, COMPRISING IN COMBINATION: (A) A BOTTOM WALL AND OPPOSED PAIRS OF SIDE AND END WALLS HINGED THERETO AND UPSTANDING THEREFROM TO FORM A STRUCTURE OPEN AT THE TOP; (B) EACH OF SAID SIDE WALLS AND THE FORWARD ONE OF SAID END WALLS INCLUDING INNER AND OUTER PANELS HINGEDLY INTERCONNECTED AT THEIR UPPER CORRESPONDING EDGES; (C) SAID BOTTOM WALL INCLUDING OPPOSED PAIRS OF INNER AND OUTER PANELS HINGEDLY CONNECTED TO LOWER EDGES OF THE SIDE AND END WALLS, RESPECTIVELY; (D) THE BOTTOM WALL INNER PANELS HAVING OUTBOARD EDGES HINGED TO RESPECTIVE SIDE WALL INNER PANELS AND HAVING INBOARD EDGES MEETING MEDIALLY OF THE SIDE WALLS, AND HAVING TRANSVERSE SLOT MEANS EXTENDING BETWEEN THE SIDE WALLS; (E) A PAIE OF LONGITUDINAL DIVEDER PANELS HINGEDLY CONNECTED TO THE BOTTOM WALL INNER PANELS AT CORRESPONDING INBOARD EDGES THEREOF AND UPSTANDING IN BACK-TOBACK RELATIONSHIP; (F) ONE OF SAID BOTTOM WALL OUTER PANELS BEING HINGEDLY CONNECTED AT ITS OUTBOARD EDGE TO THE LOWER EDGE OF THE FORWARD END WALL OUTER PANEL AND THE OTHER BOTTOM WALL OUTER PANEL BEING HINGEDLY CONNECTED AT ITS OUTBOARD EDGE TO THE LOWER EDGE OF THE REARWARD END WALL, AND THE OUTER BOTTOM WALL PANELS PRESENTING THEIR INBOARD EDGES IN SUBSTANTIAL ALIGNMENT WITH THE TRANSVERSE SLOT MEANS; (G) A PAIR OF TRANSVERSE DIVIDER PANELS HINGEDLY CONNECTED AT THEIR LOWER ENDS TO THE INBOARD EDGES OF THE BOTTOM WALL OUTER PANELS AND UPSTANDING THEREFROM TO EXTEND THROUGH THE TRANSVERSE SLOT MEANS;
