Description

Dec. 24, I935. s n 2,25,552
OPENING MEANS FOR CIGARETTE CONTAINERS Filed March 11, 1935 INVENTOR.
HET TIE E, SHRIVER ATTORNEY.
Patented Dec. 24, 1935 UNITED STATES PAT-BENT OFFICE OPENING MEANS FOR CIGARETTE CONTAINERS 2 Claims.
- My invention relates to an opening means for cigarette containers.
The object of my invention is to provide an opener carried by the container in operative position opening one side thereof to remove the cigarettes sideways.
A further object of my invention is to provide a means to sever one of the broad sides of the container along its longitudinal center so that the other side opposite the severed line will bend, functioning as a hinge when the said severed side is opened and each end automatically severed in alignment with their respective end of the hinge feature.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a severing means for one side of a cigarette container, having an anchor plate between the end wall and ends of the cigarettes to which a cord is attached, the other end of the cord protruding from the opposite end of the container as a grip to pull the concealed portion of the cord, severing the side under which the said cord is loosely positioned.
These and other objects will hereinafter be more fully explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters will apply to like parts in the difierent views.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the container from an upper view point.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container from a lower View point.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the container, having one of its broad sides and its adjacent ends severed and rocked to an open position, the opening means removed.
Fig. 4 is-a similar view to that of Fig. 3 except being filled with cigarettes,
Fig. 5 is a view of the opening means for the container, consisting of an anchor plate and cord in their relative position when placed in the container.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the container, showing the position of the cord and anchor plate and a fragmentary portion of the cigarettes.
My invention herein disclosed, consists of an anchor plate I to which one end of a cord 2 is attached near its longitudinal center and extend-- of the anchor at its longitudinal center will position in close contact on the inside and along the center axis of one of the broad sides of the said container as shown at A in Fig. 6 and protruding. at the other end as shown at B in Figs. 1 and 2; 5 the said end portion being exposed, may be gripped drawing the same upward and outward to sever the side of the container adjacent thereto, so that the said container may be opened as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 by rocking the side por- 10 tions CC from each other, at which instance each end is severed toward the opposite side as shown at D, and the said opposite side in parallel alignment with the sever of the other side will bend abruptly as at E functioning as a hinge when the said container is being opened and closed, by which means a package may be opened and the cigarettes easily removed therefrom without mutilation and the package closed to properly conceal and protect the unremoved cigarettes.
In Fig. l is shown a portion of the cord positioned snugly on the exterior of the end of the container as at F for the reason that a revenue stamp may be placed thereover and extend along the line of sever, by which position the said stamp will be defaced, but I do not wish to be confined to such position as the outward extension of a portion of the said cord may be for other purposes and the line along which the container is severed by the said cord may be partially severed at inter- 30 vals or perforated toassist the cord in its function, furthermore the said container may be severed otherwise for the flex of the opposite side as a hinge previously described and for the purpose set forth. 35
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In an opening means for cigarette containers, in combination with a severable cigarette 40 container having side and end walls, an anchor plate approximately the size and shape of the end wall and secured thereto by endwise engagement of cigarettes positioned in the container, a cord having one end secured near the center of one of its longitudinal edges and transversely extending across the said anchor plate to the other edge and from thence positioned snugly on the inside of the adjacent side wall, passing through and outward at the intersection of the other end wall and last named side wall, by which arrangement and position of the cord, one side of the container may be severed by an oblique longitudinal pull of the cord.
2. In an opening means for cigarette contain- 55 ers, in combination with a severable cigarette container having end and side walls and being filled with cigarettes with end engagement on the end walls respectively, an anchor plate substantially the size and shape of an end wall, and positioned between the wall and adjacent end of the cigarettes, a cord intermediately positioned to one longitudinal edge of the said plate and extending there across between the plate and end 10 wall and along one side to the other end wall and passing through at the intersection of the last named walls, by which position and arrangement of the cord, the side adjacent the cord and the end adjacent the anchor plate may be severed by an outward and longitudinal pull of the cord,
preserving the package and rendering it hingable 7
