This invention relates to sharpening devices and more particularly to an abrasive and means for detachably mounting said abrasive on a suitable support.
An object of this invention is to provide a sharpener device which isso constructed that it may be readily mounted on a round or elongated support in the form of a fish pole or the like without unduly interfering with the use of the pole and without adding weight to the pole sufficient to cause the pole to become cumbersome. The sharpener device is particularly designed for use in the sharpening of the tangs of fish hooks and is designed for mounting on the fish pole so as to I be in a convenient position for use by the fisherman whether the fisherman is on shore or wading in a stream so that fish hooks having bent or dulled tangs may be readily repaired through the medium of the sharpener device.
A further object of this invention is to provide an abrasive and mounting means therefor which is of a character that the abrasive may beapplied to a suitable support either round or angular in transverse section so that the abrasive may be disposed in a convenient position for use at the desired time while not interfering with the normal use of the support or pole.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a device constructed according to the embodiment of this invention, mounted on a fish pole which is shown in fragmentary side elevation.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is. a plan view of the mounting means for the abrasive showing the mounting means in unbent or blank form.
Figure 5 is a detail side elevation of a modified form of this invention.
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line $6 of Figure 5.

Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral Ill designates generally an abrasive member which in the present instance is formed of carborundum or the like. This abrasive Ill may also be formed of steel with serrated surfaces or faces on the opposite sides thereof. 5 In order to provide a means whereby the abrasive it may be mounted on a fishingpole or other suitable support, I have provided a clamping means in the form of a pair of strap members,
generally designated as H, which are disposed 10 one at each end of the abrasive Ill and extend beyond the end of the abrasive ID. The strap members H are fixed at one end to a longitudinally extending tongue l2 which is disposed in a longitudinally extending opening l3, and this 15 tongue l2 may be secured as by cementitious material or the like. The tongue I2 is-integral with a pair of arcuate plates I4 which extend longitudinally of the abrasive l0 and form a base for the abrasive. The curvature of the two members 20 M is coincident with the curvature of the article or support on which the abrasive I0 is to be mounted.
In the present instance, the straps or clamping members H are formed integral with the 25 tongue l2 and the base members I4 and the tongue 92 is provided outwardly of the ends of the abrasive ill with an opening I 5. The strap II is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings l6 and a bolt I1 is adapted to be disposed through a selected opening l6 and through the opening [5 with the strap ll wrapped about the pole which is designated P. This pole P is here shown as only one means of support to which the abrasive I!) may be attached. Where the bolt I! is disposed through one of the inner openings I6 in the strap or clamping member II, the remaining portion of the strap II is broken ofi as by cutting, bending or the like, and preferably the openings l6 are spaced relatively close together so as to facilitate the breaking off of the unused portion of the strap I I.
As will be noted from the drawing, the abrasive i] is mounted by means of the clamping members H on the pole P at a point closely adjacent the handle H of the pole in a position where the fish line will not rub against the abrasive and thus be injured thereby. The abrasive Ill, as above stated, is preferably formed of carborundum or the like, and is of a tapering construction with a relatively narrow outer longitudinal edge and a relatively wide base or inner edge portion.
In Figures 5 and 6, there is disclosed another form of sharpener wherein the abrasive Ill is secured to a tongue I2 carried by arcuate plates M The abrasive Ill has a longitudinally extending slot or groove opening'on the inner face thereof in which the tongue I2 is cemented or otherwise secured. The plates M are provided adjacent each end thereof with a pair of yieldable clamping members l8 in the form of clips or the like, which are adapted to detachably mount the abrasive Ill upon the periphery of the pole. The clips or clamping members 18 are of sufiicient yieldability and strength to hold the abrasive Ill in the desired position upon the periphery of the pole or support.
In Figures 7 and 8, there'is disclosed another form of this invention where the abrasive Ill is mounted on an arcuate flanged plate, generally designated as 59, which has a curved base portion 26 provided at the opposite longitudinal edges with inwardly inclined flanges 2i engaging in a longitudinally disposed groove 22 in the abrasive 10 The base member I9 is provided at each end thereof with yieldable clips or clamping members l8 which are similar to the clips I8 and which have spaced apart free ends preferably 'outturned a slight degree as will be noted from the drawing so that clips or clamping members 18 may be readily snapped onto the pole or other suitable support.
In the use of the device shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the clamping strips 1 I are bent about the pole P and the bolts I1 disposed through the opening E5 in the tongue I2 and the bolts alsodisposed through a selected hole or opening I6 in the free end of the strip II. The remaining portion of the strip II is then broken ofi or severed in any suitable manner so that there will not be any projecting portions of the clamping strip which might cause injury to the fish line or the like. When it is desired to sharpen the tang of a fish hook, the tang is rubbed on a selected surface of the abrasive member and it will be apparent that the hook need not be removed from the fish line so that the fisherman is enabled to sharpen the hook irrespective of the position of the fisherman, that is, irrespective of whether the fishermanis on shore or wading in a stream. It is a well known .fact that the tangs of fish hooks become dulled or bent by contact with stones or other obstructions and it is in order to save replacement of the hook that the abrasive Ii} is conveniently mounted on the pole P. The disclosure shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive may be left on the fish pole once the device has been mounted on the pole whereas the forms disclosed in Figures to 8 inclusive may be readily removed from the pole although the clamping means will tightly hold the device on the pole as long as may be desired.
What iscla-imed is:--
1. As a new article of manufacture, an abrasive member and means for mounting the abrasive member on a supporting means, said mounting means comprising an elongated transversely arcuate member secured to an edge of the abrasive member, a pair of elongated strips integral with said elongated member and provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings therethrough, and tightening bolts engaging selected openings in said strips.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an abrasive 5 member having a slot therein, an elongated member engaging an edge of the abrasive member,
a tongue carried by the elongated member engaging in said slot and a pair of yieldable clips integral with said elongated member and dis- 1O posed one adjacent each end of the abrasive member for detachably holding the abrasive member on a supporting means.
3. As a new article of manufacture, an abrasive member provided along one edge thereof with an elongated slot, a tongue disposed in said s1ot,' arcuate means integral with the tongue and engaging against an edge of the abrasive member, and a pair of yieldable clips integral with the arcuate means for detachably holding theabrasive member on a support.
4. A sharpener device as set forth, comprising an abrasive provided along one edge thereof with an elongated slot opening through said edge of the member, an elongated tongue 2 secured in said slot and extending beyond the ends of the abrasive member, said extended portions of said tongue having openings therethrough and a pair of elongated clamping straps integral with the tongue and adapted to be bent about a supporting means, each strap having a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings therethrough, and bolts extending through the openings in the tongue and a selected opening of each strap whereby to clamp the device on a support.
5. A sharpener device as set forth, comprising an elongated abrasive member provided with an elongated slot opening through one edge thereof, an elongated tongue secured in said slot, and .a pair of resilient clips integral with the tongue and extending laterally of the abrasive member for supporting the abrasive member in outstanding relation to a supporting means.
6. A sharpener device as set forth, comprising an abrasive provided with a pair of longitudinally disposed recesses on opposite edges thereof, a flanged arcuate member engaging an edge of the abrasive member, the fianges of said arcuate member engaging in the recesses of the abrasive member, and a pair of yieldable clips at each end of said arcuate member for holding the abrasive in outstanding relation to a supporting means.
'7. As a new article of manufacture, an abrasive member having a slot therein, a tongue secured in said slot, and clamping means secured to the tongue for fastening the abrasive member to a support.
8. As a new article of manufacture, an abrasive member having a slot therein, a tongue secured in said slot and projecting beyond the ends of the member, and clamping means secured to the ends of the tongue for fastening the member to a support.
