Abstract
A collapsible container having a base, an upper frame, and a pair of opposed side walls pivotably connected to side edges of the upper frame. Each of the side walls including an upper panel hingeably connected to a lower panel. The lower panel is hingeably connected to the base. A pair of opposed end walls are pivotably connected to end edges of the upper frame. The end walls are pivotable between an upright position extending from the upper frame to the base between the side walls and a retracted position within the upper frame. A lid is pivotably secured to the upper frame. Other embodiments are also disclosed.
Description
- Some containers of liquid, such as bottles of oil, are delivered to stores in cardboard boxes. The bottles are then removed from the boxes and sold individually. The cardboard boxes are discarded. Also, the cardboard boxes can become damaged during shipping, especially if any of the bottles leak.
- A number of different reusable containers are disclosed that are particularly suited, although not exclusively, for delivering to stores containers of liquid, such as bottles of oil.
- One embodiment provides a collapsible container having a base, an upper frame, and a pair of opposed side walls pivotably connected to side edges of the upper frame. Each of the side walls including an upper panel hingeably connected to a lower panel. The lower panel is hingeably connected to the base. A pair of opposed end walls are pivotably connected to end edges of the upper frame. The end walls are pivotable between an upright position extending from the upper frame to the base between the side walls and a retracted position within the upper frame. A lid is pivotably secured to the upper frame.
- In another embodiment, a nestable container includes a base and a plurality of walls extending upward from the base. Each of the plurality of walls including an upper portion and a lower portion. The upper portion projects outwardly relative to the lower portion. At least one bail arm is pivotably mounted to the upper portion. The bail arm is pivotable between a deployed position configured to abut a shoulder of a bottle and a retracted position adjacent an interior surface of the upper portion.
- A collapsible container includes a base. A pair of opposed walls are movable between an upright position and a collapsed position on the base. A bail arm is slidably and pivotably secured to at least one of the pair of opposed walls. The bail arm is movable between a retracted position and a deployed position. The bail arm extends across an interior of the container in the deployed position.

FIG. 1 shows one embodiment of acontainer 210. Thecontainer 210 includes abase 212, a pair ofopposed side walls 214 and a pair ofopposed end walls 216. Handleopenings 218 are formed through an upper portion of eachend wall 216. - Each of the
side walls 214 and theend walls 216 includes alower portion 222 and anupper portion 220. The lower 222 portion includes a plurality of spaced apartvertical slats 224. Theupper portion 220 is disposed outward of thelower portion 222. - The
container 210 has a pair ofbail arms 236 that are pivotably mounted to the interior of theupper portion 220. Thebail arms 236 are generally U-shaped, each having a pair of parallel arms pivotably connected at lower ends to theend wall 216 and a cross-beam connecting outer ends of the parallel arms.FIG. 1 shows thebail arms 236 in a retracted position (only onebail arm 236 is visible), received in arecess 238 above and partially around thehandle opening 218. -
FIG. 2 shows a plurality (in this example, four) ofbottles 50 received within thecontainer 210. Thebottles 50 are supported on thebase 212 and abut theside walls 214 and endwalls 216. In this illustrated example, thebottles 50 are 1-quart bottles 50. - After the
bottles 50 are placed in thecontainer 210, thebail arms 236 may be pivoted downward.FIG. 3 shows thebail arms 236 in-between their retracted position and their deployed position. Thebail arms 236 are removed from theirrespective recesses 238 in theend walls 216 and pivoted downward toward thebottles 50 until they reach their fully-deployed position shown inFIGS. 4 and 5 . InFIGS. 4 and 5 , thebail arms 236 are pivoted downward to the deployed position in which they prevent removable of thebottles 50 from thecontainer 210. Optionally, thebail arms 236 may contact thebottles 50, but as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, this is not required. Thebail arms 236 retain thebottles 50 in thecontainer 210, even if thecontainer 210 were tipped or knocked over. - The
bail arms 236 can be pivoted down to a deployed position such that they extend into the interior of thecontainer 210, as shown inFIGS. 4-6 . In the example shown, thecontainer 210 can hold fourbottles 50, but any number of bottles could be accommodated depending on the size of the bottles. When deployed, thebail arms 236 may abut the shoulders of thebottles 50 to retain thebottles 50 in thecontainer 210, or may be spaced away from the shoulders (or caps) of thebottles 50 as shown but still retain thebottles 50 in thecontainer 210. Whether they abut thebottles 50 may depend on the orientation and shape of thebottles 50 in thecontainer 210. - There are preferably
detents 240 or manual locks that hold thebail arms 236 in the deployed position. If thecontainer 210 is knocked over, thebail arms 236 retain thebottles 50 in thecontainer 210. To remove thebottles 50, thebail arms 236 can be pivoted up back to the retracted position in the recess on the interior surface of theupper portion 220, as previously shown inFIG. 2 . - As shown in
FIG. 7 , loadedcontainers 210 can be stacked on upon the other, with the base of theupper container 210 supported on thebottles 50 in thelower container 210. Thebase 212 of theupper container 210 is received partially within theupper portion 220 of thewalls lower container 210 for stability. - When empty, the
containers 210 can be nested as shown inFIG. 8 . As shown inFIG. 8 , in the proper relative orientations, thelower portions 222 of theupper containers 210 fully nest into theupper portions 220 andlower portions 222 of the lower containers 210 (i.e. when theslats 224 are out of alignment). Thebase 212 of theupper container 210 is nested within thelower portion 222 of thelower container 210. Theupper portions 220 of eachupper container 210 rest on theupper portions 220 of eachcontainer 210 below. This significantly reduces the total volume of theempty containers 210 for efficient shipping and storage. -
FIG. 9 shows an alternate embodiment in which acontainer 310 is similar to that ofFIG. 1 but only has onebail arm 336 and only holds threelarger bottles 50. - The
container 310 includes abase 312, a pair ofopposed side walls 314 and a pair ofopposed end walls 316. Handleopenings 318 are formed through an upper portion of eachend wall 316. - Each of the
side walls 314 and theend walls 316 includes alower portion 322 and anupper portion 320. The lower 322 portion includes a plurality of spaced apartvertical slats 324. Theupper portion 320 is disposed outward of thelower portion 322. - The
container 310 has onebail arm 336 that is slidably and pivotably mounted to the interior of theupper portion 320 of one of theside walls 314. Thebail arm 336 is generally U-shaped, having a pair of parallel arms pivotably connected at lower ends to theside wall 314 and a cross-beam connecting outer ends of the parallel arms.FIG. 9 shows thebail arm 336 in a retracted position, received in arecess 338 adjacent an upper edge of theside wall 314. -
FIG. 10 shows thecontainer 310 with three larger bottles 51 (e.g. 5-quart) received therein. Thebottles 51 each abut bothside walls 314. Thebail arm 336 is in the retracted position in theside wall 314. -
FIG. 11 shows thebail arm 336 being moved from the retracted position toward the deployed position. Thebail arm 336 has been removed from therecess 336, slid upward of thecontainer 310, and pivoted inward slightly. - In
FIG. 12 , thebail arm 336 has been pivoted downward into the interior of thecontainer 310 over thebottles 51. Again, thebail arm 336 may or may not contact thebottles 51, but will still retain thebottles 51 in thecontainer 310. Again, locks or detents may secure thebail arm 336 in the deployed position. - When empty, the
containers 310 can be nested as shown inFIG. 13 . As shown inFIG. 13 , in the proper relative orientations, thelower portions 322 of theupper containers 310 fully nest into theupper portions 320 andlower portions 322 of the lower containers 310 (i.e. when theslats 324 are out of alignment). Thebase 312 of theupper container 310 is nested within thelower portion 322 of thelower container 310. Theupper portions 320 of eachupper container 310 rest on theupper portions 320 of eachcontainer 310 below. This significantly reduces the total volume of theempty containers 310 for efficient shipping and storage. -
FIGS. 14 to 26 show acontainer 1310 according to another embodiment. Thecontainer 1310 includes abase 1312 having integrally moldedupstanding side flanges 1313.Opposed side walls 1314 are pivotably connected to theside flanges 1313 by hinges 1328.Opposed end walls 1316 are between theside walls 1314 at opposite ends of thebase 1312. Theside walls 1314 and endwalls 1316 are all pivotably connected to anupper frame 1318 byhinges lid 1320 is pivotably connected to theupper frame 1318 byhinges 1322 projecting upwardly of the remainder of theupper frame 1318. - Each of the
side walls 1314 includes upper andlower panels 1332 connected to one another byhorizontal hinges 1330. The horizontal hinges 1330 only permit thepanels 1332 to pivot inward, not outward. When theend walls 1316 are in the deployed position between theside walls 1314, theside walls 1314 cannot pivot inward and are locked in an upright position. - Each
end wall 1316 includes aframe 1334 defining an outer perimeter of theend wall 1316 and alarge opening 1336 within. Ahandle opening 1340 is formed at an upper end of eachend wall 1316. - The
lid 1320 has a pair oflatch members 1342 projecting laterally from thelid 1320. Thelatch members 1342 are resiliently biased outward and can be selectively retracted by a user slidinghandle loops 1344 toward one another. -
Interlocking projections 1346 project upward from the side edge of theframe 1318 opposite thehinges 1322. Theprojections 1346 and hinges 1322 are aligned with and complementary torecesses 1348 at the outer perimeter of thebase 1312. -
FIG. 15 shows thecontainer 1310 with thelid 1320 pivoted to the closed position. The latch members 1342 (not visible) are received in recesses in the inner perimeter of theframe 1318. - As shown in
FIG. 16 , thecontainer 1310 can receive a plurality of containers, such asbottles 50 of oil. In this example, there are threebottles 50 and they are each one quart, but could be bigger or smaller and there could be more or fewer. -
FIGS. 17 and 18 show thecontainer 1310 andbottles 50 with thelid 1320 being closed (FIG. 17 ) and closed (FIG. 18 ). -
FIGS. 19 to 24 show a sequence for collapsing thecrate 1310. In a first step, referring toFIG. 19 , theend walls 1316 are pivoted inward away fromstops 1350 projecting inward from theside walls 1314. Theend walls 1316 are pivoted all the way into theupper frame 1318, as shown inFIG. 20 . This permits theside walls 1314 to collapse inwardly, as shown inFIG. 21 . Referring toFIG. 21 , thepanels 1332 of theside walls 1314 can pivot inward with theend walls 1316 in theframe 1318. Thehinges 1330 move inward until thepanels 1332 of theside walls 1314 are stacked on one another on thebase 1312 as shown inFIG. 22 . InFIG. 23 , thelid 1320 is pivoted toward the closed position (which could have been done as a first step). -
FIG. 24 shows thecontainer 1310 completely collapsed and with thelid 1320 closed. This is a compact, efficient configuration to ship and store thecontainer 1310 when empty. - Referring to
FIG. 25 , a plurality ofcollapsed containers 1310 can be stacked. Thehinges 1322 andprojections 1346 of the lower container are received in therecesses 1348 of theupper container 1310 for stability. Thecontainers 1310 could be assembled and returned to the upright, use configuration by reversing the sequence ofFIGS. 18-24 . -
FIG. 26 shows assembled,upright containers 1310 stacked. Again, thehinges 1322 andprojections 1346 of the lower container are received in therecesses 1348 of theupper container 1310 for stability. -
FIG. 27 shows acontainer 1410 according to another embodiment. Thecontainer 1410 is the same as thecontainer 1310 ofFIGS. 14 to 24 except it hasintegral latch members 1442 projecting away from one another toward ends of theupper frame 1418. Referring toFIG. 28 , thelatch member 1442 projects outward into a recess formed at the periphery of thelid 1420. Thelatch member 1442 is configured to engage a rampedsurface 1443 on theupper frame 1418, which will cause it to deflect in a plane containing thelid 1420 and to snap under the rampedsurface 1443 to secure thelid 1420 closed. Thelatch members 1442 can then be deflected out from under the rampedsurfaces 1443 to release thelid 1420 so that it can be opened again. -
FIG. 29 illustrates acollapsible container 610 according to another embodiment. Thecontainer 610 has a base 612 withupstanding side flanges 613.Side walls 614 are pivotably connected to upper ends of theside flanges 613.End walls 616 are pivotably connected at ends of thebase 612. InFIG. 29 , theside walls 614 and endwalls 616 are shown in the upright position, with theend walls 616 between theside walls 614. As is known, latches (not shown) would selectively connect theend walls 616 to theside walls 614. As shown, theside walls 614 are substantially longer than theend walls 616. - The
side walls 614 each include anupper cavity 618 along an upper edge thereof. Abail arm 636 is retractable into eachupper cavity 618. InFIG. 29 , thebail arms 636 are shown in the stored, retracted position. Eachbail arm 636 includes a pair ofpins 636 projecting laterally outward into achannel 640 in each end of eachside wall 614. Eachpin 636 can pivot and slide within therespective channel 640. - The
end walls 616 each include anelongated recess 642 adjacent eachside wall 614. Anotch 644 spaced away from eachside wall 614 leads from eachrecess 642 to the container interior. -
FIG. 30 is an end view of thecontainer 610 ofFIG. 29 . Again as shown, thebail arms 636 havepins 636 projecting laterally outward into thechannel 640 in each end of eachside wall 614. Adrag rail 644 on the underside of thebase 612 includes a pair ofnotches 646 for receiving a portion of thebail arms 636 of acontainer 610 stacked therebelow, as will be explained later below. - In
FIG. 31 , thebail arms 636 are shown having been slid upward. Thepins 638 slide upward in thechannels 640 in theside walls 614. Thebail arms 636 are each U-shaped, including a pair of parallel arms and a cross-beam extending across outer ends of the parallel arms. Lower ends of the parallel arms have thepins 638 extending therefrom.FIG. 32 is an end view of the container ofFIG. 31 . -
FIG. 33 is a side view of thecontainer 610 ofFIG. 31 . -
FIG. 34 shows thecontainer 610 ofFIG. 31 with thebail arms 636 further pivoted to the deployed position. The parallel arms of thebail arms 636 are partially received in therecesses 642 in theend walls 616. The cross beams are received in thenotches 644. Thebail arms 636 each extend across thecontainer 610 from oneend wall 616 to the other. Thebail arms 636 would be selectively locked into this position either by detents or latches. - In use, in this position, bottles (or other items) within the
container 610 would be retained in thecontainer 610 interior by thebail arms 636. Therefore, if thecontainer 610 were tipped or dropped, the bottles or other items would be retained in thecontainer 610. Upon releasing the latches or overcoming the detents, thebail arms 636 could be pivoted outwardly and then slid back into thecavities 618 in theside walls 614 as shown nFIG. 29 . The bottles or other items could then be removed from thecontainer 610. -
FIG. 35 is an end view of thecontainer 610 ofFIG. 34 with anidentical container 610 stacked thereon. Thebail arms 636 of thelower container 610 are received in thenotches 646 through thedrag rail 644 of theupper container 610. Thedrag rail 644 of theupper container 610 is received between theside walls 614 and between theend walls 616 of thelower container 610. Thebase 612 of theupper container 610 is stacked on theside walls 614 and endwalls 616 of thelower container 610. - As shown in
FIG. 36 , when empty thecontainer 610 can be reconfigured to the collapsed position. Theside walls 614 and endwalls 616 are pivoted down onto thebase 612. More specifically, theside walls 614 are pivoted down onto theend walls 616.FIG. 37 is an end view of thecollapsed container 610 ofFIG. 36 . Alternatively, thebail arms 636 could be mounted in theend wall 616. -
FIG. 38 shows one corner of thecontainer 610 with a slidinglatch 648 slidably mounted to an upper edge of theend wall 616. Thelatch 648 can be slid to the locked position shown, wherein thelatch 648 extends partially over therecess 642 in which thebail arm 636 is partially received.Similar latches 648 would be mounted adjacent each of the fourrecesses 642 to selectively lock thebail arms 636 in the deployed position, thereby retaining bottles or other items in thecontainer 610. -
FIG. 39 shows one corner of thecontainer 610 with adetent 650 formed adjacent thenotch 644 leading to therecess 642. Thedetent 650 projects into thenotch 644 over thebail arm 636 in the deployed position. Thebail arm 636 must be snapped past thedetent 650 to move it to the deployed position. Thedetent 650 retains thebail arm 636 in the deployed position and retains bottles or other items in thecontainer 610. - In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes and jurisprudence, exemplary configurations described above are considered to represent a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it should be noted that the invention can be practiced otherwise than as specifically illustrated and described without departing from its spirit or scope.
Claims (19)
1. A collapsible container comprising:
a base;
a plurality of walls extending upward from the base, wherein each of the plurality of walls pivotably connected to the base; and
a bail pivotably and slidably mounted to a first wall of the plurality of walls, the bail pivotable and slidable between a deployed position extending into an interior of the container and a retracted position within the one of the plurality of walls.
2. The collapsible container of claim 1 wherein the bail is a first bail, the collapsible container further including a second bail pivotably and slidably mounted to a second wall of the plurality of walls, wherein the second wall is opposite the first wall.
3. The collapsible container of claim 1 wherein the bail is lockable in the deployed position.
4. The collapsible container of claim 1 wherein the base includes upstanding side flanges and wherein the one of the plurality of walls is pivotably connected to one of the upstanding side flanges.
5. The collapsible container of claim 1 wherein the plurality of walls includes a pair of opposed side walls and a pair of opposed end walls and wherein the one of the plurality of walls is one of the pair of opposed side walls, and wherein the one of the pair of opposed side walls includes an upper cavity along an upper edge thereof, and wherein the bail is configured to be at least partially received in the upper cavity when the bail is in the retracted
6. The collapsible container of claim 5 wherein the bail includes a cross-beam and a pair of arms projecting from the cross-beam, the bail including a pin extending outward from each of the pair arms, wherein each pin is pivotable and slidable in a channel in each end of the one of the pair of opposed side walls.
7. The collapsible container of claim 6 wherein the base further includes a drag rail on a lower surface thereof, wherein the drag rail includes a notch for receiving the bail of an identical collapsible container stackable therebelow.
8. A collapsible container comprising:
a base having upstanding side flanges;
a pair of opposed side walls pivotably connected to the side flanges, the pair of side walls pivotable between an upright position and a collapsed position on the base, wherein the pair of side walls in the upright position define a container interior;
an upper frame pivotably connected to upper ends of the pair of side walls, the upper frame defining an upper opening into the container interior; and
a lid pivotably connected to the upper frame, the lid selectively closing the upper opening into the container interior.
9. The collapsible container of claim 8 wherein each of the pair of side walls includes an upper panel and a lower panel connected by at least one hinge.
10. The collapsible container of claim 9 wherein the at least one hinge only permits the upper panels and lower panels to pivot inward, not outward, of the collapsible container.
11. The collapsible container of claim 10 further including a pair of opposed end walls pivotably connected to the upper frame.
12. The collapsible container of claim 11 wherein each of the pair of opposed end walls includes a handle opening at an upper end thereof.
13. The collapsible container of claim 12 wherein interlocking projections project upward from the upper frame and wherein the base includes complementary recesses aligned to receive the interlocking projections of an identical container stacked therebelow.
14. The collapsible container of claim 8 wherein the lid includes a pair of latch members projecting away from one another toward ends of the upper frame.
15. A collapsible container comprising:
a base;
a pair of opposed walls movable between an upright position and a collapsed position on the base; and
a bail arm slidably and pivotably secured to at least one of the pair of opposed walls, the bail arm movable between a retracted position and a deployed position, wherein the bail arm extends across an interior of the container in the deployed position.
16. The collapsible container of claim 15 wherein the pair of opposed walls is a pair of opposed first walls, the container further including a pair of opposed second walls, wherein the bail arm extends from one of the second walls to the other of the second walls in the deployed position.
17. The collapsible container of claim 16 wherein the second walls each include an elongated recess on an upper edge thereof, wherein the bail arm is received in the elongated recesses in the deployed position.
18. The collapsible container of claim 17 further including a pair of notches in a drag rail on an underside of the base, the pair of notches aligned to receive a bail arm of an identical container stacked therebelow.
19. The collapsible container of claim 15 further including a latch or detent securing the bail arm in the deployed position.
