This invention relates to atomizers for liquid fuel burnmg apparatus of the type comprising a body member formed with a bore presenting a liquid fuel passage, and has for an object to pro- 5 vide an improved atomizer which is operable, satisfactorily by low, medium or high pressure fluid, either compressed air or steam.
According to the invention an atomizer of the above specified type for liquid fuel and the like 10 comprises a tubular body member, a nozzle mem ber having an axial truncated conical passage, an atomizer tip member constituted by a disc having a tubular truncated cone which projects axially from said disc and is positioned within 15 the passage of the nozzle member so as to present an annular discharge passage around said cone, an annular chamber behind said disc, a passage in the body member for conducting atomizing pressure fiuid to said annular cham- 20 ber, inclined holes, circular in cross section, formed through the disc, the inclination of the holes being the same as the inclination of the truncated cone whereby atomizing pressure fluid is passed from the annular chamber behind the 25 disc through the space around the cone without radial deflection.
The holes in the disc of the atomizer tip member may be inclined to correspond substantially to the inclination of the truncated conical pro- 30 jection and the said holes may be angled and inclined to impart tothe fluid passing through the nozzle a whirling movement or, alternatively the said holes may be angled in opposite directions and inclined at an angle to the axial center line of the nozzle.

Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of According to the invention an atomizer, for liquid fuel burning apparatus, includes a body member I formed with bores or passages 2, 2 and 3, 3 which extend longitudinally thereof. The inlet end 3 of the bore or passage 3, 3' of the member l is connected to a liquid fuel supply by means of a pipe and coupling and at the same end of the member I the inlet end 5 of the bore or passage 2, 2 is connected to an atomizing pressure fluid supply, either compressed air or steam. The end face of the member 5, remote from the connections 54 and 5 to the liquid fuel and atomizing fluid supplies, is formed with a recess 6. The adjacent end, which is the exit end, of the bore 3, 3 opens into the said recess 6 65 at the center thereof. Conveniently to simplify manufacture, at a point I spaced a relatively short distance from the exit end, the bore 3, 3
is enlarged, the enlarged portion 3, which forms the major part of the bore, being eccentric to the axial or center line of the member I and 5 the smaller and exit end portion 3' of the bore being concentric with the axial or center line of the member I.
In the wall of the member I, at the exit end thereof and in the bottom or end wall of the 10 recess d, an annular recess 9 is formed which presents an annular chamber surrounding the exit end 3' of the bore 3, 3'. The adjacent end 2' of the passage 2, 2 opens into the said annular recess o'r chamber 9. Conveniently to simplify manufacture, at a point It spaced a relatively short distance from the exit end, the passage 2, 2 is enlarged, the enlarged portion 2 which forms the major part of said passage, being eccentric to the smaller and exit end part 2' of said passage.
Into the recess 8 an atomizer tip member is fitted. The said tip is constituted by a disc member I! having a truncated cone I2 projecting from one side thereof. The disc member II is placed in the recess 5 so that the truncated cone I2 projects outwardly and is held in position by a nozzle member 53 screw-threaded for engagement with similar threads formed on the adjacent end of the body member I. The nozzle member I3 is formed with an axial tapered passage M. the wall of which surrounds and is spaced from the surface of the truncated conical p-rojection I2 so that an annular discharge or exit nozzle I5 is presented by the member 13. An exit passage It for the liquid fuel is formed axially through the truncated conical projection l2 in alignment with the exit end 3' of the bore of the member I, the adjacent ends of the axial passages it and 3' in the truncated cone I2 and body member I respectively being in register. Through the disc member I I a plurality of spaced holes ll are formed.
When the holes ll are angled all in one direction there is imparted to the pressure fluid passing therethrough a whirling movement round the truncated cone I2.
In operation liquid fuel enters the bore or passage 3, 3' and is discharged from the exit end It of the passage in the truncated cone I2 and atomizing pressure fluid passes from the passage 2, 2' into the annular recess or chamber 9. From said chamber 9 the said pressure fluid passes through the holes I? in the disc member 5! into the space I5 between the surfaces of the truncated cone l2 and the passage I 4 and is discharged around the liquid fuel issuing from the exit end of the axial passage I6 through the truncated cone I 2. , Desirably there is carried by the discharge end of the body member I a shield or air deflector iii of flaring formation adapted to shield, from the direct action of the secondary air supply, the mixture of atomized fuel and'atomizing fluid discharged from the member'lS. The shield I8 may be formed with a hub portion 18 which sleeves the end of the body member I and may be axially I adjustable thereon.
If desired a portion of the flaring shield l8 may be cut away to present a sight opening or the said shield may be formed with a sight hole la in register with a sight hole provided in the furnace front.
We claim:--
1. An atomizer for liquid fuel and the like comprisinga tubular body member, a nozzle member havingan'axial truncated conical passage, an atomizer tip member constituted by a disc having a' tubular truncated cone which projects axially from said disc and is positioned within the passage of the nozzle member so as to present an annular discharge passage around said cone, an annular chamber behind said disc, a passage in thebody member for conducting atomizing pressure fluid to said annular chamber, and inclined holes, circular in cross section, formed through the disc, the inclination of the holes being the same as the inclination of the truncated cone whereby atomizing pressure fluid is passed from the annular chamber behind the disc through the space around the cone without radial deflection through the disc whereby atomizing pressure fluid is conducted from said annular chamber to the annular discharge passage in the nozzle member.
2. An atomizer for liquid fuel and the like comprising a body member formed with a bore presenting a liquid fuel passage, a nozzle memthe atomizer tip member, a passage formed in the annular wall of the body member parallel to the bore thereof and adapted to supply atomizingpressure fluid to said annular chamber, and inclined holes, circular in cross section, formed through the disc, the inclination of the holes being the same as the inclination of the truncated cone whereby atomizing pressure fluid is passed from the annular chamber behind the disc through the space around the cone without radial deflection. 7
