This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for and method of making hollow articles. The general object of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus for moulding hollow articles.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved mould for casting hollow articles such as bath tubs having a skirt along one side thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel method of making hollow articles.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Referring to the drawings by reference characters I have indicated my improved apparatus generally at ill. adapted to manufacture bath tubs and includes 35 a mould member which is indicated generally at E2. The mould member comprises a base section l3, a body portion i i, a top section 5 5, a core plunger 56 and a skirt plunger ll.
The mould I 2 is adapted to form a bath tub 40 from moulten material, such as metal. The bath tub [3 includes the usual hollow body i9 having a top flange therearound and with a depending skirt 2! along one side and having a rib 22 ad- 45 skirt 2! adjacent the lower end thereof and at the opposite end joins the flange 20 adjacent the center of the tub.
The mould i2 is adapted to form the bath tub 50 inverted as is the customary practice. The base i3 includes a bottom portion 23 and an upwardly extending flange portion 24. The body portion It of the mould is positioned on the base 93 and has an aperture 29 therein which conforms to the shape of the outside of the 5 tub body. The upper face of the body portion I4 is flush with the upper surface of the base flange 2d and in the underface of the body portion I 4 I provide a recessed portion 3! in which the flange portion 28 of the tub is formed. Furthermore, in 10 the underface of the member it I provide gas outlet grooves 38 which at one end communicate with the recess 35 and at their opposite ends open through the side faces of the body.
The top section 15 is positioned over the upper 15 faces of the body section M and the flange portion 2% and includes a recess Si in its underface which is shaped to form a portion of the outside of the tub body.
Adjacent the rear thereof the top section I 5 20 includes an aperture 32 having positioned therein at each end a plug member 33 which forms a chamber 34. The plug members 33 are secured to the top section in any desired manner and extend to the center of the tub at each end thereof and 25 are shaped to conform to the outer face of the tub.
The plug members extend downward through apertures 35 in the body section IE to the underface of the tub flange 2t and are recessed as at 36 to form the end sections of the skirt 2i Each of the plug members 33 includes a triangular shaped recess 37 in which a sand core 38 is adapted to be positioned. The core 38 has a groove therein in which the rib 22 of the tub 35 is formed. The skirt plunger ll is positioned in the chamber 36 of the top section and like the plugs 33 extends downward through the aperture 35 in the body it to the under surface of the top flange 26. One face of the plunger I7 is 40 shaped as indicated at All to conform to the outer surface of the tub and the opposite face of the plunger is shaped as indicated at ll to conform to the inner surface of the tub skirt 2!.
In the underface of the top section I pro- 45 vide a plurality of gas outlet grooves 42 which at one end communicate with the recess 3| and at the opposite ends open through the side walls of the section 15. Intermediate the length and width of the tub bottom in the top section I5 I provide an aperture 43 and a communicating recess M in which a sand pouring plug 45 is positioned. The underface of the pouring plug 45 is shaped to conform to a portion of the under surface of the tub bottom. The pouring plug 45 66 p H is shown as mounted on 55 collars 13 which engage the upper 2, 2,o23,212 further includes an open topped recess 46 and is municate with the interior of the cylinders 66 provided with a plurality of apertures 41 which one adjacent each end of each cylinder. The core plug 16 includes a lower portion 48 which is positioned in the aperture of the base l3 and has a sliding fit therein. The core plug l6 further includes an upper portion 49 which is positioned in the aperture 29 of the body section l4 and in the recess 3! of the top section l5. The upper portion 49 of the core plug is shaped to conform to the inner surface of the tub body.
The core plug 16 is supported adjacent each end on a cam member which engages wear plate 5! on the core plug. The cam members 59 are mounted on a shaft 52 which is journaled in bearings 53 and includes a crank portion 54 intermediate its length. Pivotally mounted on the crank portion 54 of the shaft I provide a pitman 55 which is in turn pivotally secured as at 56 to a piston rod 5! and which is secured to a piston 58 positioned in a cylinder 59.
Fluid conduits as indicated at 66 and 6| communicate with the interior of the cylinder 59 one adjacent each end. Any suitable type of control means may be used to admit fluid under pressure to either end of the cylinder or exhaust it therefrom. When fluid under pressure is ad- '7 mitted to the cylinder 59 through the conduit 66 the piston 58 is forced downward thereby rocking the shaft 52 and the cams 50 which in turn raise the core plug it upward to an operative position. When the fluid is exhausted from the cylinder 59 through the conduit to and admitted thereinto through the conduit 6| the piston 58 is forced upward thereby rocking the shaft 52 and the earns 56 to a position wherein the cams allow the core plug 16 to move downward a slight distance.
At each corner of the mould I2, I provide a post 62. The posts adjacent their upper ends are secured to standards 63, which are connected by transverse members 63. Slidably mounted on each of the posts 62, I provide a hollow sleeve 64 which is slidably mounted in a cap member 65 of a cylinder 66. The sleeve 64 extends downward into the cylinder 66 where it is provided with an enlarged piston head 61.
The body section l4 of the mould I2 includes bearing members 68 in which the sleeves 64 are slidably positioned and the top section 15 includes similar bearing members 69. The skirt plunger a frame member 16 which includes bea ng members H in which the rear sleeves 64 are positioned. Secured to the rear sleeves 64 I provide collars 12 which engage the under surface of the bearings H and similar surface of the bearings H.
Secured to all the sleeves 64 I provide collars 14 which are adapted to engage the under faces of the bearings 69 and collars 15 which are adapted to engage the under faces of the bearings 68. Also secured to the sleeves 64 I provide collars 16 which engage the upper faces of the bearings 69 and collars 11 which engage the upper faces of the bearings 68. The collars 14 and 15 are spaced below the under faces of their associated bearings so that when the sleeves 64 move upward the collars 14 engage their associated bearings 69 first and upon continued upward movement of the sleeves the collars 15 thereafter engage their associated bearings 68.
As indicated at 18 and 19 fluid conduits comsuitable type of control means may be used to admit fluid under pressure to either end of the cylinders or exhaust it therefrom. When fluid 5 under pressure is admitted to the cylinders 66 through the conduits 18 the pistons 61 and the sleeves 64 are simultaneously forced upward. As the sleeves 64 thus move upward the skirt plunger I1 is first moved upward a predetermined distance then as the sleeves continue to move upward carrying therewith the skirt plunger the collars 14 engage the bearings 69 and move the top section l5 upward a predetermined distance. As the sleeves continue to move upward carrying therewith the skirt plunger and the top section the collars l5 engage the bearings 68 and move the body section [4 upward. Thereafter the skirt plunger 11, the top section l5 and the body section- I4 move upward together to a predetermined height.
20 When the fluid in the cylinders is exhausted from the cylinders through the conduits E8 the sleeves 64 move downward whereupon the body section l4, the top section l5 and the skirt plunger ll return to their initial positions.
After the various portions of the mould I2 have returned to their initial positions fluid under pressure is admitted to the cylinders 66 through the conduits 19 thereby putting a downward pressure on the piston heads 61 which urge the sleeves downward which through the medium of the collars l3, :6 and I? urge their associated mould sections into tight operative engagement.
The mould base l3 includes a continuous serpentine passageway, as indicated at 80, through which a fluid such as oil is circulated to maintain it at a predetermined temperature, the body portion M, the top section E5, the plugs 33, the skirt plunger ll and the core plunger l6 all include similar passageways 8|, 82, 83, 84 and 85, respectively, for the same purpose. Oil for circulation through the passageways 6!, 82, 83, 84 and 85 may be conducted thereto and therefrom in any suitable manner.
In operation the mould sections l4, l5 and I1 are raised and the core plunger 16 is lowered as previously described. A sand core 38 is then positioned in each of the recesses 31 of the plug members 33. The mould sections l4, l5 and I! are then lowered to operative positions and the core plunger [6 raised to an operative position. The pouring plug 45 is then positioned in the recesses 43 and 44 of the top section and thereafter moulten material such as metal or glass is poured into the recess 46 of the pouring plug 45. The moulten material runs through the apertures 41 of the pouring plug 45 into spaces provided in the mould for forming the sections of the bath tub.
After the moulten metal has been poured the core plunger I6 is lowered and after a desired interval the skirt plunger H, the top section l5 and the body section 14 are raised in the manner previously described. After the mould sections have been raised the bath tub I8 is raised upward 65 and removed out of the mould base in any desired manner, Thereafter the recess 31 of the plug members 33 are cleaned out and new core members 38 placed therein and the recesses 43 and 44 of the top section i5 cleaned out and a 70 new pouring plug 45 placed therein whereupon the mould mechanism i0 is reset to an operative position to receive another pouring of moulten material.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a novel mould mechanism which is simple in construction and highly eificient in use,
Having thus described'my invention, I claim: 1. In a moulding apparatus, a support, a mould on said support, said mould including a base having a flange upwardly projecting therefrom, a body portion on said base, said body portion being substantially Ushaped and coacting with said base and said upstanding flange to form a mould cavity, a top section on said body portion, said top section being apertured to receive a pouring plug, a skirt plunger mounted to move into said mould, means to move said skirt plunger, said top section and said body portion independently and in order, a core in said mould and means to move said core in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of said skirt plunger, said top section and said body portion.
2. In a mould for casting a receptacle which includes a hollow'body portion and a skirt portion integral therewith and spaced therefrom and wherein a rib is arranged adjacent to each end of the receptacle, each rib having one end integral with the receptacle body and. at the opposite end integral with the skirt portion, said mould including a body portion having a recess therein shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of said receptacle body and the outer surface of said skirt, a skirt plunger member, said skirt plunger being movable relative to said mould body, said mould body having a recess therein at each end, each of said spaced recesses having a sand core member therein and each of said said core members including a portion shaped to form one of said ribs.

In a mould for casting a receptacle which includes a hollow body portion and a skirt portion integral therewith and spaced therefrom and wherein a rib is arranged adjacent to each end of the receptacle each rib having one end integral with the receptacle body and the opposite end integral with the skirt portion, said mould includ ing a body portion having a recess therein shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of said receptacle body and the outer surface of said skirt, a skirt plunger member, said skirt plunger being movable relative to said mould body, one face of said skirt plunger being shaped to form the remainder of said outer surface of said receptacle body and the opposite surface of said skirt plunger being shaped to form the inner surface of said skirt, said mould body having a pair of spaced recesses therein at each end, each of said spaced recesses having a sand core member therein and each ofsaid sand core members including a portion shaped to form one of said ribs.

In a mould for casting, said mould including a base portion, a body portion and a top portion, said portions being independently movable, said portions being shaped to form a receptacle, said top portion and said body portion having a chamber therein, a plug member positioned in said chamber, said plug member extending downward into said chamber of said mould body portion, said plug member having a recess therein, a sand core member in said plug recess, said sand core member being shaped to form a rib, a skirt plunger member, said skirt plunger being positioned in said top portion chamber and being upwardly movable relative thereto, said skirt plunger extending downwardly into said mould body, said skirt plunger being shaped to form a portion of a skirt, and. a core member positioned body and the outer surface of said skirt, a skirt 1'0 plunger member, said skirt plunger being movable relative to said mould body, one face of said skirt plunger being shaped to form the remainder of said outer surface of said receptacle body the opposite surface of said skirt plunger being shaped to form the inner surface of said skirt, said mould body having a pair of spaced recesses therein each of said spaced recesses having a sand core member therein and each of said sand core members being shaped to form one of said ribs, and a core member, said core member being shaped to form the inner surface of said hollow body, said core member being movable relative to said mould body.

In a mould for casting a metal receptacle which includes a hollow body portion and a skirt, said mould including a base having a plane upper face and including an upwardly projecting flange at one side, the face of said flange adjacent said plane face being shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of the skirt, said plane face of said base being adapted to form the upper surface of the receptacle, said base having an aperture, a body portion positioned on said base and movable upwardly relative thereto, said body portion having an aperture arranged to form a portion of the outer surface of the receptacle body, said body portion having a chamber adjacent the skirt forming portion of said mould,
a top section positioned on said mould body and movable upwardly relative thereto, the under face of said top section having a recess shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of the sides and bottom of said receptacle body, said top section having a chamber therein, a skirt plunger member positioned in said top section chamber and movable upwardly relative thereto, said skirt plunger extending downwardly into said chamber of said mould body, one face of said skirt plunger being shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of said receptacle body and the opposite face of said skirt plunger being shaped to form the inner face of said skirt, a core member movably positioned in said base aperture in said mould body aperture and in said top section under-recess.

In a mould for casting an inverted receptacle which includes a hollow body and a skirt, said mould including a base having a plane upper face and an upwardly projecting flange at one side, the face of said flange adjacent said plane face being shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of said skirt, said plane face of said base being adapted to form the upper surface of said receptacle, a mould body portion having an aperture shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of said receptacle body, said mould body portion having a chamber adjacent the skirt forming portion of said mould, said mould including a top section positioned on said mould body and upwardly movable relative thereto, the under face of said top section having a recess shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of the sides and bottom of said receptacle body, said top section having an aperture communicating with said recess of said top section, a pouring plug in said aperture, said top section having a chamber therein, a skirt plunger member, said skirt plunger being removably positioned in said top section chamber, said skirt plunger extending downwardly into said chamber of said mould body, one face of said skirt plunger being shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of said receptacle body and the opposite face of said skirt plunger being shaped to form the inner face of said skirt and a core member positioned in said base aperture in said mould body aperture and in said top section underrecess, said core member being movable relative to said mould base, said mould body and said mould top section, said core member being shaped to'form the inner surface of said receptacle body.

In a mould for casting a metal receptacle which includes a hollow body portion and a skirt said mould including a base having a plane upper face and including an upwardly projecting flange at one side, the face of said flange adjacent said plane face being shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of the skirt, said plane face of said base being adapted to form the upper surface of the receptacle, said base having an aperture, a body portion positioned on said base and movable upwardly relative thereto, said body portion having an aperture arranged to form a portion of the outer surface of the receptacle body, said body portion having a chamber adjacent the skirt forming portion of said mould, a top section positioned on said mould body and movable relative thereto, said top section having a recess shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of the sides and bottom of said receptacle body, said top section having a chamber therein, a skirt plunger member positioned in said top section chamber and movable upwardly relative thereto, said skirt plunger extending downwardly into said chamber of said mould body, one face of said skirt plunger being shaped to form a portion of the outer surface of said receptacle body and the opposite face of said skirt plunger being shaped to form the inner face of said skirt, a core member movably positioned in said base aperture in said mould body aperture and in said top section recess, said core member being shaped to form the inner surface of said receptacle body, means to move said core member, means to raise said mould body, said top section and said skirt plunger to an inoperative position and means whereby in raising said mould sections said skirt plunger, said top section and said mould body start their upward movement in order.
