- the outer sleeve 98 and its radial flange 98 d can be used together with a gasket or a washer and gasket and/or plumber's putty between the flange 96 f and an upper, inner surface of the sink around the drain opening to seal the drain pipe 94 and the drain flange 96 in the drain opening of a vessel sink.

Abstract
A conventional bathroom sink has an overflow port and an overflow conduit. A conventional drain pipe for the conventional sink has overflow ports in fluid communication with the sink's overflow port. A vessel sink does not have an overflow port. A prior art drain pipe that does not have overflow ports has been used with vessel sinks. The present invention provides a new drain pipe with overflow ports for a conventional sink and means for covering and sealing the overflow ports in the new drain pipe so that the new drain pipe can also be used with a vessel sink that does not have an overflow port. Means for covering and sealing the overflow ports include an inner sleeve that fits inside the drain pipe, an outer sleeve that surrounds the drain pipe and grommets and hole plugs that that fit inside the overflow ports, where all of the means cover and seal the overflow ports so that the new drain pipe does not leak when used with a vessel sink that does not have an overflow port.

- This is a second divisional application of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 16/018,308 filed on Jun. 26, 2018, which issued as U.S. Pat. No. 10,808,386 on Oct. 20, 2020. U.S. patent application Ser. No. 17/027,147 filed on Sep. 21, 2020, was a first divisional application of the U.S. Ser. No. 16,018,308 application. The first divisional U.S. Ser. No. 17/027,147 application issued as U.S. Pat. No. 11,193,261 on Dec. 7, 2021. U.S. patent application Ser. No. 17/526,175 filed on Nov. 15, 2021, was a continuation application of the U.S. Ser. - This present invention pertains to a drain pipe or drain body that attaches to a sink at a drain opening for draining water from the sink and more particularly to a drain pipe that can be used with a sink that has or that does not have an overflow port.
- One type of sink that is used in a bathroom or restroom has an overflow port for diverting water into a drain pipe below a drain opening in the sink in the event the drain opening is closed while water continues to run into the sink. The drain pipe has a port, and an overflow conduit, which is typically built into the sink, allows water to flow from the sink's overflow port to the drain pipe's overflow port and into the drain pipe. Another type of sink, which is known as a vessel sink, does not have an overflow port. A drain pipe that does not have an overflow port is used for the vessel sink. Retail stores and plumbing supply businesses typically keep an inventory of each type of drain pipe. Sometimes a mistake is made, and a drain pipe with an overflow port is installed on a vessel sink that does not have and overflow port. The overflow port on the drain pipe may not be sealed due a difference in the thickness of the two types of sinks, which allows water to leak from the drain pipe's overflow port. Another mistake that can be made is to install a drain pipe that does not have an overflow port in a sink that has an overflow port, which causes the sink's overflow port to be nonfunctional.
- A drain body is provided for connection to a sink having a drain opening, where the drain body includes a pipe having a sidewall, a length and opposing upper and lower ends, where the sidewall defines an interior fluid flow passageway in the pipe; a flange on the upper end that extends radially, where the flange and pipe are sized so that the pipe will pass through the drain opening, and where the flange will not pass through the drain opening; a port in the sidewall for receiving water from the sink through an overflow channel if the sink has an overflow port; and means for sealing the port in the sidewall if the sink does not have an overflow port.
- Means for sealing the port in the sidewall of the pipe include a cover and a sleeve. Types of covers include a resilient grommet, a hole plug pressed into the port after the pipe is made, a hole plug that has external threads that match external threads on the sidewall of the pipe, a knock-out hole plug formed integral with pipe that can be broken out and removed to provide the port in the sidewall and a sheet with adhesive that is glued or bonded to the sidewall to cover and seal the port. The sleeve can be an inside sleeve or an outside sleeve, either of which is proximate to the sidewall for covering the sealing the port. The inside sleeve may be a standalone tube or a tube that is attached to the underside flange. The outside sleeve may be in threaded engagement with external male threads on the sidewall of the pipe.
- A kit can be made and sold that includes a drain pipe having a sidewall with a port in its sidewall, a drain flange formed integral with or attachable to an upper end of the drain pipe and at least one means for covering and sealing the port in the sidewall of the drain pipe. The kit can be used with a sink that does not have an overflow port by using the means for covering and sealing the port in the sidewall of the drain pipe. The kit can be used with a sink that has an overflow port by not using the means for covering and sealing the port in the sidewall of the drain pipe.

FIG. 1 is a side elevation in cross-section of a prior art pop-up drain assembly 10 in a sink orbasin 12. The pop-updrain assembly 10 is received in the sink orbasin 12, which is typical for a bathroom, restroom or lavatory.Sink 12 has a lower surface 12 a that drains into adrain opening 12 b.Sink 12 has anoverflow port 12 c in aside wall 12 d. Anouter wall 12 e andside wall 12 d define an overflow conduit orchannel 12 f, andside wall 12 d has anoverflow drain port 12 g for draining overflow fluid into a port indrain assembly 10. Afaucet 14 is mounted on atop deck 12 h ofsink 12 for supplying water or other fluid to sink 12. Pop-updrain assembly 10 comprises adrain flange 16 that fits down throughdrain opening 12 b insink 12.Drain flange 16 has a threaded tubular portion extending essentially throughout its full length, and aflange 16 b extends radially outwardly on a top end.Flange 16 b is shown inFIG. 1 as formed integral with the tubular body ofdrain flange 16, butFIG. 2 in the present inventors' U.S. application Ser. No. 15/584,030 (Pub. No. 2017/0314244 A1) shows a more typical arrangement in which the flange portion is in threaded engagement with the tubular portion.FIG. 2 in the present inventors' U.S. application Ser. No. 15/584,030 shows a drain pipe that comprises a drain flange and a separate drain tube, which is in a threaded engagement with the drain flange. A gasket or plumber'sputty 18 provides a seal between the lower surface 12 a of thesink 12 and theflange 16 b ofdrain flange 16. Aflexible gasket 20 and awasher 20 a are placed around a bottom portion ofdrain flange 16 and then pressed tightly against a bottom surface ofsink 12 with a threadednut 20 b. Adrain body 22 is threaded onto a lower end ofdrain flange 16.Drain body 22 has awrench flange 22 a for receiving a wrench for tightening and looseningdrain body 22 with respect to drainflange 16.Drain body 22 has apivot rod port 22 b, and a threadedtubular stub 22 c projects radially outwardly fromdrain body 22. Apivot rod seal 24 is received instub 22 c. - A
pivot rod 26 has astopper end 26 a and anouter end 26 b. Apivot ball 28 is sealingly received onpivot rod 26 closer to stopper end 26 a thanouter end 26 b.Pivot rod 26 is received instub 22 c such that stopper end 26 a is inside thedrain body 22, and thestopper ball 28 rests againstpivot rod seal 24. Apivot rod cap 30 is threaded ontostub 22 c sufficiently tightly to sealpivot ball 28 againstpivot rod seal 24, but loose enough to allowpivot ball 28 andpivot rod 26 to pivot. Anextension rod 32 having a plurality of holes, which are not shown, is received onouter end 26 b ofpivot rod 26 and held in place by aclip 32 a.Extension rod 32 is bent so as to have twoparallel portions extension rod 32, and each of the two parallel portions has a hole through which acontrol rod 34 is received.Control rod 34 passes through a faucet port 14 a and a sinkcontrol rod port 12 h.Control rod 34 has aknob 34 a at an upper end, andcontrol rod 34 is fastened toextension rod 32 by aset screw 32 d. - A
stopper 40 is received indrain flange 16 anddrain body 22.Stopper 40 has anelongate shaft 40 a running its length, which has a longitudinal axis through the center ofstopper 40. Acap 40 b is located on an upper end while thedrain assembly 10 is installed and operational, and a pivotrod receiving member 40 c is located on an opposing lower end. The pivotrod receiving member 40 c defines an opening through which stopper end 26 a ofpivot rod 26 protrudes for engaging and movingstopper 40, and pivotrod receiving member 40 c may be referred to asopen member 40 c. Four flanges or fins, referred to collectively asfins 40 d, extend longitudinally alongshaft 40 a and project radially, andfins 40 d lie in two perpendicular and intersecting planes. The fins provide structural support for the shaft and center the stopper in the drain pipe. - A vessel sink (not shown) does not have an overflow port or overflow conduit such as
overflow port 12 c andoverflow conduit 12 f shown inFIG. 1 . The thickness of a vessel sink may be similar to the thickness ofside wall 12 d inFIG. 1 . There have been many instances in which a drain pipe with an overflow port has been installed on a vessel sink, where the overflow port in the drain pipe was not sealed and leaked. - The present invention provides in one embodiment a drain pipe that has an overflow port and a device or a means for covering and sealing the overflow port in the drain pipe when the overflow port is not needed. Consequently, a retail store or a plumbing supply store does not need to have an inventory of both types of drain pipes, as one drain pipe with an overflow port and a means for covering and sealing the overflow port can be used in either application.
- With respect to the present invention,
FIG. 2 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 50 similar to the tubular portion of thedrain flange 16 inFIG. 1 .Drain pipe 50 is very similar to the drain tube 54 b inFIG. 2 of the present inventors' U.S. application Ser. No. 15/584,030 (Pub. No. 2017/0314244 A1).Drain pipe 50 has asidewall 50 a, an upper end 50 b, alower end 50 c and a plurality ofoverflow ports 50 d, which are openings through thesidewall 50 a. Thesidewall 50 a defines an interiorfluid flow passageway 50 e in thedrain pipe 50.Overflow ports 50 d are shown as having a rectangular shape, but may have any other shape such as circular and square. Agrommet 52 has a shape and size suitable for covering and sealing one of theoverflow ports 50 d.Grommet 52 has aperimeter 52 a that is slightly larger than one of theoverflow ports 50 d defined by thesidewall 50 a.Grommet 52 has agroove 52 b along theperimeter 52 a. Thegroove 52 b is about the same size as, but slightly smaller than, the one of theoverflow ports 50 d.Grommet 52 is preferably resilient so that it can bend and compress and is preferably made of a rubber or elastomeric material. Onegrommet 52 is inserted in eachoverflow port 50 d for covering and sealing theoverflow ports 50 d. The portion of thesidewall 50 a that defines one of theports 50 d is received in thegroove 52 b. Thegrommet 52 presses against or is close to thesidewall 50 a so as to cover and seal one of theoverflow ports 50 d, thereby preventing water in the interiorfluid flow passageway 50 e from leaking out through theport 50 d. Onegrommet 52 would be pressed into eachoverflow port 50 d. A kit that includes thedrain pipe 50 and agrommet 52 for eachoverflow port 50 d can be sold. The kit can further include a pop-up drain assembly such as described in the present inventors' related applications. -
FIG. 3 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 60 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 56 has asidewall 56 a, anupper end 56 b, alower end 56 c and a plurality ofoverflow ports 56 d, which are openings through thesidewall 56 a. Thesidewall 56 a defines an interiorfluid flow passageway 56 e in thedrain pipe 56. Thesidewall 56 a has externalmale threads 56 f. Ahole plug 58 is pressed into anoverflow port 56 d in a tight, sealing fit with the portion of thesidewall 56 a that defines theport 56 d. Thehole plug 58 may protrude outwardly somewhat after installation and may have a smooth outer surface. However, in one embodiment, thehole plug 58 has male threads on an external surface that match with themale threads 56 f on thesidewall 56 a, and in this embodiment a nut (not shown) having internal female threads can be screwed over the hole plugs 58 to hold them securely engaged with thesidewall 56 a to seal theoverflow ports 56 d. -
FIG. 4 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 60 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 60 has asidewall 60 a, anupper end 60 b, alower end 60 c, a plurality ofoverflow ports 60 d and an interiorfluid flow passageway 60 e. A knock-out hole plug 62 covers and seals each of theoverflow ports 60 d. The knock-out hole plugs 62 are formed integral with thesidewall 60 a of thedrain pipe 60 or are inserted intooverflow ports 60 d and fastened to thesidewall 60 a to cover and seal theoverflow ports 60 d. If thedrain pipe 60 is to be used with a sink that has an overflow port and an overflow conduit, then the knock-out hole plugs are knocked out, punched out or broken out so that water can flow from the sink's overflow port through the overflow conduit and into the interiorfluid flow passageway 60 e through theoverflow ports 60 d. If thedrain pipe 60 is to be used with a sink that does not have an overflow port, presumably a vessel sink, then the knock-out hole plugs 62 are left in place so that water does not leak out through theoverflow ports 60 d. A V-shapednotch 60 f can be formed in thesidewall 60 a to provide a line of weakness around the perimeter of what will become anoverflow port 60 d if the knock-out plug 62 is removed from thesidewall 60 a. -
FIG. 5 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 66 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 66 has asidewall 66 a, anupper end 66 b, alower end 66 c, a plurality ofoverflow ports 66 d and aninside surface 66 e. Aflange 68 hasfemale threads 68 a in threaded engagement with theupper end 66 b ofdrain pipe 66. The male and female threads can be reversed, and theflange 68 can be made integral with thedrain pipe 66, or a press fit can be used.Flange 68 has an upper,outer surface 68 b and an inner, lower surface 68 c. A cylindrical,tubular sleeve 68 d depends downwardly from the inner, lower surface 68 c. A gap is defined between anouter surface 68 e and thefemale threads 68 a in theflange 68. Theupper end 66 b of thedrain pipe 66 fits with little clearance (somewhat snugly) in the gap. Thetubular sleeve 68 d has anupper end 68 f attached to or formed integral with theflange 68 and an opposing lower end 68 g. The lower end 68 g of thesleeve 68 d extends below theoverflow ports 66 d. Theouter surface 68 e of thesleeve 68 d is very close to or proximate to or adjacent to theinside surface 66 e of thedrain pipe 66 and below theoverflow ports 66 d, thereby covering and sealing theoverflow ports 66 d. -
FIG. 6 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 70 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 70 has asidewall 70 a, anupper end 70 b, alower end 70 c, a plurality ofoverflow ports 70 d and aninside surface 70 e. A cylindrical,tubular sleeve 72 has asidewall 72 a, anupper end 72 b, alower end 72 c and anoutside surface 72 d.Sleeve 72 fits insidedrain pipe 70 such that theoutside surface 72 d ofsleeve 72 is very close to or proximate to or adjacent to theinside surface 70 e of thedrain pipe 70.Sleeve 72 has a length long enough to cover theoverflow ports 70 d in thedrain pipe 70.Sleeve 72 can be held in place by a pressure fit, a compression fit, a friction fit or by an adhesive.Sleeve 72 covers and seals theoverflow ports 70 d. -
FIG. 7 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 76 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 76 has asidewall 76 a, anupper end 76 b, alower end 76 c, a plurality ofoverflow ports 76 d and an interiorfluid flow passageway 76 e. A continuous strip orpatches 78 of an adhesive-backed or coated material is secured or pressed into engagement with thesidewall 76 a for covering and sealing theoverflow ports 76 d. In its simplest form, a piece of duct tape can be wrapped aroundsidewall 76 a to cover and seal theoverflow ports 76 d. However, a more elegant solution is envisioned in which the material may be decorative, such as matching or accenting the color of thedrain pipe 76, and the material may be a metallic foil or a resilient polymeric material. It may be preferable to thread a nut over the material or to clamp the material to thesidewall 76 a in addition to or instead of the adhesive. -
FIG. 8 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 80 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 80 has asidewall 80 a, anupper end 80 b, a lower end 80 c, a plurality ofoverflow ports 80 d and aninside surface 80 e. A cylindrical,tubular sleeve 82 has asidewall 82 a, anupper end 82 b, alower end 82 c and anoutside surface 82 d.Sleeve 82 fits insidedrain pipe 80 such that theoutside surface 82 d ofsleeve 82 is close to or near theinside surface 80 e of thedrain pipe 80.Sleeve 82 has a length long enough to cover theoverflow ports 80 d in thedrain pipe 80.Sleeve 82 has an uppercircumferential groove 82 e near itsupper end 82 b and a lowercircumferential groove 82 f near itslower end 82 c. An upper O-ring, seal orgasket 82 g is received in theupper groove 82 e, and a lower O-ring, seal orgasket 82 h is received in thelower groove 82 f.Sleeve 82 covers and seals theoverflow ports 80 d. A kit that includes the items described with reference toFIG. 8 and a drain flange can be sold, preferably with thesleeve 82 uninstalled. If the application is for a vessel sink without an overflow port, theseals sleeve 82, and thesleeve 82 can be inserted into thedrain pipe 80 to cover and seal theoverflow ports 80 d. -
FIG. 9 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 86 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 86 has asidewall 86 a, anupper end 86 b, alower end 86 c, a plurality ofoverflow ports 86 d and aninside surface 86 e. A cylindrical,tubular sleeve 88 has asidewall 88 a, anupper end 88 b, alower end 88 c and anoutside surface 88 d.Sleeve 88 also has a outwardly extendingradial flange 88 e at itsupper end 88 b that projects radially with respect to the longitudinal axis ofsleeve 88.Sleeve 88 fits insidedrain pipe 86 such that theoutside surface 88 d ofsleeve 88 is close to or near theinside surface 86 e of thedrain pipe 86.Sleeve 88 has a length long enough to cover theoverflow ports 86 d in thedrain pipe 86. Adrain flange 90 has asidewall 90 a, anupper end 90 b, alower end 90 c, aninside surface 90 d of thesidewall 90 a, anoutside surface 90 e of thesidewall 90 a, an outwardly extendingradial flange 90 f that would rest on a bottom surface of a sink and surround a drain opening and an inwardly extendingradial flange 90 g that provides a shoulder that theupper end 86 b of thedrain pipe 86 abuts. Theupper end 86 b of thedrain pipe 86 also abuts theradial flange 88 e of thesleeve 88. Upper surfaces of the upper ends 88 b and 90 b of thesleeve 88 and thedrain flange 90, respectively, are aligned and would be visible in a sink and would preferably have the appearance of being smooth and continuous.Sleeve 88 may or may not be fastened to thedrain flange 90.Sleeve 88 can be held in place by a pressure fit, a compression fit, a friction fit or by an adhesive.Sleeve 88 covers and seals theoverflow ports 86 d. -
FIG. 10 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 94 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 94 has a sidewall 94 a, anupper end 94 b, a lower end 94 c, a plurality ofoverflow ports 94 d and anoutside surface 94 e of the sidewall 94 a. Adrain flange 96 has asidewall 96 a, anupper end 96 b, alower end 96 c, aninside surface 96 d of thesidewall 96 a, anoutside surface 96 e of thesidewall 96 a and an outwardly extendingradial flange 96 f that would rest on a bottom surface of a sink and surround a drain opening.Drain flange 96 is in threaded engagement withdrain pipe 94 and together would fit in a drain opening of a sink and would be sealed with the sink. If the sink has an overflow port and an overflow conduit, then overflow water will drain into theoverflow ports 94 d. However, if the sink is a vessel sink without an overflow port, then water would likely leak out through theports 94 d in thedrain pipe 94. To seal theports 94 d in thedrain pipe 94 when thedrain pipe 94 and thedrain flange 96 are used with a vessel sink that does not have an overflow port, anouter sleeve 98 is used to cover and seal theports 94 d.Outer sleeve 98 has anupper portion 98 a that has an inside diameter and inside female threads 98 b sized and designed to matingly and threadedly engage theoutside surface 94 e, which has male threads, of thedrain pipe 94. Theouter sleeve 98 has anupper end 98 c and aradial flange 98 d that extends radially outwardly with respect to the longitudinal axis of theouter sleeve 98. Theouter sleeve 98 and itsradial flange 98 d can be used together with a gasket or a washer and gasket and/or plumber's putty between theflange 96 f and an upper, inner surface of the sink around the drain opening to seal thedrain pipe 94 and thedrain flange 96 in the drain opening of a vessel sink. Theouter sleeve 98 has alower portion 98 e that has an inside surface/diameter 98 f that is about the same as the inside diameter of thedrain pipe 94. An inwardly tapered transition portion 98 g provides a transition between the inside diameter/surface 98 b and the inside diameter/surface 98 f.Outer sleeve 98 covers and seals theoverflow ports 94 d in thedrain pipe 94 when the sink is a vessel sink. A kit can be sold that includes thedrain pipe 94, thedrain flange 96 and theouter sleeve 98 along with any washers, gaskets and nuts that may be useful. -
FIG. 11 is a side elevation in cross-section of adrain pipe 100 similar to thedrain pipe 50 inFIG. 2 .Drain pipe 100 has asidewall 100 a, an upper end 100 b, alower end 100 c, a plurality ofoverflow ports 100 d and anoutside surface 100 e of thesidewall 100 a, which has male threads 100 f. A gasket or seal orresilient ring 102 surrounds and is in close proximity to thesidewall 100 a of thedrain pipe 100 and is located so as to cover theoverflow ports 100 d.Resilient ring 104 has an annular shape with aninner surface 102 a, anouter surface 102 b, anupper surface 102 c and alower surface 102 d. Awasher 104 is located below theresilient ring 102 and has anupper surface 104 a located adjacent to and in contact with thelower surface 102 d of theresilient ring 102.Washer 104 has a lower surface 104 b. Anut 106 havingfemale threads 106 a is in threaded engagement with the male threads 100 f on theouter surface 100 e of thedrain pipe 100.Nut 106 is located belowwasher 104, andwasher 104 is betweenresilient ring 102 andnut 106.Nut 106 has anupper surface 106 b that is that is adjacent to and in contact with the lower surface 104 b of thewasher 104. - A kit including a drain flange such as
drain flange 96 inFIG. 10 , thedrain pipe 100, theresilient ring 102, thewasher 104 and thenut 106 can be made and sold. The kit may also include theflexible gasket 20 shown inFIG. 1 . Thewasher 104 and thenut 106 are likely interchangeable with thewasher 20 a and the threadednut 20 b inFIG. 1 . Theresilient ring 102 is more elongated than thegasket 20 inFIG. 1 so that theresilient ring 102 can cover and seal theoverflow ports 100 d in thedrain pipe 100. If thedrain pipe 100 is to be used in a conventional sink with an overflow port such assink 12 inFIG. 1 , then the elongatedresilient ring 102 is not really needed and a gasket likegasket 20 can be used when fastening thedrain pipe 100 in the sink. However, if thedrain pipe 100 is to be used in a vessel sink that does not have an overflow port, then the drain flange can be threaded onto the upper end 100 b of thedrain pipe 100; thelower end 100 c of thedrain pipe 100 can be dropped through the drain opening in the sink; optionally, a second washer (not shown) can be placed around the drain pipe just below the bottom of the vessel sink; theresilient ring 102 is then placed on the drain pipe below the second washer if one is used or just below and in contact with the bottom of the vessel sink; thewasher 104 is placed below and in contact with thelower surface 102 d of theresilient ring 102; and thenut 106 is placed below thewasher 104 so that theupper surface 106 b of thenut 106 is in contact with the lower surface 104 b of thewasher 104. Thenut 106 is tightened, which presses theresilient ring 102 against the bottom of the vessel sink. The gasket, seal orring 102 is made of a material that is firm, but compressible, which is preferably resilient and waterproof or impervious to water. Suitable materials may include an elastomeric polymeric material, synthetic or natural rubber or a closed-cell foam. Tightening of thenut 106 compresses thering 102, which presses theinner surface 102 a of thering 102 against theoutside surface 100 e of thedrain pipe 100, thereby covering and sealing theoverflow ports 100 d of thedrain pipe 100. - Having described the invention above, various modifications of the techniques, procedures, materials, and equipment will be apparent to those skilled in the art. It is intended that all such variations within the scope and spirit of the invention be included within the scope of the appended claims.
Claims (20)
1. A drain pipe for connection to a sink having a drain opening, comprising:
a pipe having a sidewall, a length and opposing upper and lower ends, wherein the sidewall defines an interior fluid flow passageway in the pipe;
a flange on the upper end that extends radially, wherein the flange and pipe are sized so that the pipe will pass through the drain opening, and wherein the flange will not pass through the drain opening;
a port in the sidewall for receiving water from the sink through an overflow channel if the sink has an overflow port; and
an element for sealing the port in the sidewall if the sink does not have an overflow port, wherein the element is selected from the group consisting of:
a resilient grommet,
a removable knock-out element,
a ring that surrounds the pipe and covers and seals the port,
an adhesive sheet of material, and
a hole plug sized and configured to be pressed into the port and engaged with the sidewall.
2. The drain pipe of claim 1 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the resilient grommet, wherein the resilient grommet is sized and configured to be received in the port and engaged with the sidewall.
3. The drain pipe of claim 2 , wherein the resilient grommet has a perimeter and a groove in the perimeter, and wherein the groove is sized and configured to receive the sidewall in a sealing engagement.
4. The drain pipe of claim 1 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the resilient grommet, wherein the resilient grommet has a body, a perimeter around the body, and a groove in the body along the perimeter, wherein the body and the groove are sized and configured so that the body fits inside the port and a portion of the sidewall that defines the port is received in the groove.

The drain pipe of claim 1 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the knock-out element, wherein the knock-out element is formed integral with the sidewall of the pipe, wherein there is an interface between the sidewall and the perimeter of the knock-out element, wherein the interface provides a weak area between the perimeter of the knock-out element and the sidewall, and wherein the knock-out element is removable by breaking the interface.
6. The drain pipe of claim 1 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the ring that surrounds the pipe and covers and seals the port, and wherein the ring is made of a resilient material.
7. The drain pipe of claim 6 , wherein the ring has an inside surface that is in contact with an outside surface of the sidewall, and wherein the inside surface is smooth and unthreaded prior to being placed on the sidewall of the pipe.
8. The drain pipe of claim 7 , wherein the outside surface of the sidewall has external threads, further comprising a nut engaged with the external threads, wherein the ring is between the sink and the nut.
9. The drain pipe of claim 8 , further comprising a washer sized and configured for placement between the nut and the ring.
10. The drain pipe of claim 1 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the adhesive sheet of material, wherein the adhesive sheet of material is an adhesive-backed or coated material sized and configured to engage the sidewall proximal to the port and to cover the port.
11. The drain pipe of claim 10 , further comprising a nut or a clamp sized and configured to surround and hold the adhesive sheet of material.
12. The drain pipe of claim 1 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the hole plug, wherein the hole plug is received in the port and pressed into engagement with the sidewall for covering and sealing the port.
13. The drain pipe of claim 12 , wherein the sidewall has external male threads, wherein the hole plug has an exterior surface that has threads that match the threads on the sidewall, further comprising a nut in threaded engagement with the sidewall and the threads on the exterior surface of the hole plug for holding the hole plug in the port and for sealing the port.
14. The drain pipe of claim 12 , further comprising a clamp surrounding the pipe and covering and holding the hole plug.
15. A kit, comprising:
a drain body for connection to a sink having a drain opening, the drain body comprising:
a pipe having a sidewall, a length and opposing upper and lower ends, wherein the sidewall defines an interior fluid flow passageway in the pipe;
a flange formed integral with or attachable to the upper end that extends radially, wherein the flange and pipe are sized so that the pipe will pass through the drain opening, and wherein the flange will not pass through the drain opening;
a port in the sidewall for receiving water from the sink through an overflow channel if the sink has an overflow port; and
an element for sealing the port in the sidewall if the sink does not have an overflow port, wherein the element is selected from the group consisting of:
a resilient grommet,
a removable knock-out element formed integral in the sidewall of the pipe,
a resilient ring sized and configured to surround the pipe tightly and to cover and seal the port,
an adhesive sheet of material designed and configured to cover the port and to bond to the sidewall, and
a hole plug sized and configured to be pressed into the port and to thereby be engaged with the sidewall.
16. The kit of claim 15 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the resilient grommet, wherein the resilient grommet has a body, a perimeter around the body, and a groove in the body along the perimeter, wherein the body and the groove are sized and configured so that the body fits inside the port and a portion of the sidewall that defines the port is received in the groove.
17. The kit of claim 15 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the resilient ring that surrounds the pipe and covers and seals the port, wherein the ring has an inside surface that is smooth and unthreaded prior to being placed on the sidewall of the pipe, wherein the sidewall of the pipe has external threads, further comprising a nut having internal threads, wherein the nut is sized and configured for threaded engagement with the sidewall of the drain pipe and for trapping the resilient ring between the sink and the nut.
18. The kit claim 15 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the knock-out element, wherein the knock-out element is formed integral with the sidewall of the pipe, wherein there is an interface between the sidewall and the perimeter of the knock-out element, wherein the interface provides a weak area between the perimeter of the knock-out element and the sidewall, and wherein the knock-out element is removable by breaking the interface.
19. The kit of claim 15 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the adhesive sheet of material, wherein the adhesive sheet of material is an adhesive-backed or coated material sized and configured to engage the sidewall proximal to the port and to cover the port, further comprising a nut or a clamp sized and configured to surround and hold the adhesive sheet of material.
20. The kit of claim 15 , wherein the element for sealing the port is the hole plug, wherein the hole plug is configured to be received in the port and pressed into engagement with the sidewall for covering and sealing the port, further comprising a clamp configured to surround the pipe and cover and hold the hole plug.
