UNITEDSTA ES PATENT OFFICE."
JOHN REID, on BRO LYN, Assrenort. o T E J. MOTT IRON WORKS,
- r OF NEW YORK, NY.
, IMPROVEMENT IN 'SWINGING BASlNS A-ND UR'lN-ALS;
- Specification forming part a Letters Patent No. 202,193, dated April 9, 187B application filed March 7, 1878. I I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ornv REID, of Brook lyn, in the county of Kings and'State of New.
horizontally upon vertical pivots, and in so doing the supply of water has been opened and closed. Basins or wash-stands have been made to project from a recessed wall-plate, and to turn up against such plate and close therecess.
My invention is an improvement inQbasins that project from the wall-plate and close up against the same; and said improvements relate to the basin or urinal having a vertical, or nearly vertical, flange to retain the contents of the basin, which flange passes into the recess of the wall-plate when the basin is closed; also to the peculiar construction of the back edge of the basin, whereby the contents are spread evenly over a pouring-lip as the basin is tipped; also to the receiver connected with the waste-pipe, whereby the risk of water being thrown out beneath the basin as the contents are emptied is prevented, and I connect the basin with the supply-cock, so that the latter is opened and closed by the movementsof the former.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the basin as swung open for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at the line to ac, with the basin closed up to place; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan with the basin swung open.
The wall-plate a is of a suitable size and shape for the wash-basin or urinal, and may be more or less ornamental, so as to be adapted to bath-rooms, bed-rooms, offices, or other places where it is desirable to have a basin, but where an open basin or urinal would be objectionable.
This wall-plate has an opening in it adapted to the basin hereinafter described, and behind the wall plate a is the back plate b, that is re,-
cessed, and bolted, by preference, to the front plate, as represented in Fig. 2; and it is preferable to coat the surface of this back plate, the inner part of the front plate, and the inside of the basin with enamel, to facilitate cleaning.
In the back plate there is a recessed channel at 0, adapted to receive the supply-water pipe d, that passes up to the cock 0; and by connecting the pipe d with the water-pipe in the building by a union, g,below the edge of the front plate, opportunityas afforded for connecting and disconnecting the pipes after the front plate has been secured in place; and it will generally be preferable to employ a movable ornamental plate, I between the floor and the bottom edge of the plate a for inclosing the'couplings.
The front plate a, is made with a forward projection at a, to increase the capacity of the container, into which the water is poured from the swinging basin h, and at the bottom of this container is the sewer-pipe k and union connection, and there is to be a suitable trap at this point. I prefer to extend the upper end of the sewer-pipe above the base of the container, and to place over the same a belltrap, Z, standing on legs, between which the water passes as it runs from the container into the sewer-pipe.
The basin his shaped according to the use to which it is specially adapted. For a urinal it may be flat, or nearly so; but it is preferably of a shape to hold a shallow layer of water when turned down horizontally. For wash-stands, the basin will be sufficiently large and deep for convenience in use. Under all circumstances there is a flange or rim, 1', adapted to pass within the opening in the front plate a when the basin is closed and the-flange 2 lies against the surface of such plate; and there is a lock or turn-bolt at n, to secure the parts when the basin is closed up.
At the back of the basin is the straight sloping edge 3, forming a dam, over which the contents of the basin pour in a uniform sheet as the basin is emptied; and there is a deflector at 5 upon the inside of the front plate below the basin, that serves to throw the water downwardly, as it may dash up against the inside of the front plate, and thereby prevent the same escaping between the basin and the container.
The trunnions t upon the sides of the basin are received into sockets upon the face of the front plate a, and the plate of the basin extends at each'side of the dam 3 in the form of stops, that are beneath the projections 7 at the back of the plate a, so as to support the basin when turned down; and by preference there are blocks of india-rubber inserted in the under surfaces of the projections 7, to lessen concussion.
Upon the basin there is a joint-block, o, and from this a link, r, extends to the handle of the cock e, the parts being hinged together, and proportioned so that the movement derived from the swinging basin will open the faucet as the basin is turned down and shut the same as the basin is turned up. This appliance is used with urinals to make the wash self-acting.
I claim as my invention 1. A basin or receiver swinging upon horizontal trunnions or pivots, and having a straight back edge, forming a dam, over which the water flows as the basin is emptied, in combination with the front plate a and back b, substantially as set forth.
2. A basin or receiver swinging upon horiz'ontal pivots, and provided with a flange, z, in combination with the wall-plate a, having an opening into which such flange i passes, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the basin or receiver swinging on horizontal pivots, of a front plate, a back plate, and a waste-pipe and trap connecting with the container formed by the space between the front and back plate below the basin, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the swinging basin and front and back plate, of the deflector 5, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. The projections 7 at the sides between the front and back plates, in combination with the swinging basin, the edges of the plate of which project below such projections 7, for the purposes and substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the swinging basin and the faucet, of the connecting-link r, hinged to the respective parts, substantially as set forth.
7. The back plate b, having the recessed channel 0, in combination with the water-supply pipe d, faucet e, and coupling g below the edge of the said back plate, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 27th day of February, A. D. 1878.
JOHN REID.
