The figures are not necessarily to scale; some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention.
- In order to prevent further spread of viruses (e.g., COVID-19), face coverings are increasingly becoming recommended or required for the public and frontline workers. Current face shields lack in protection of the chin and neck area. They are often large, heavy and bulky causing fatigue and limits range of motion. Many of them are single use, inaccessible to the public and healthcare workers in non-hospital settings, or complex in design making them difficult to disinfect between uses. Reusable face shields are often expensive. The surgical mask described below addresses these problems.
- This face shield may serve as personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect individuals from spreading/contracting COVID-19 or other viruses. Because the government has diverted and reserved most PPE to hospitals, healthcare workers in non-hospital settings are having difficulty obtaining the necessary PPE to provide a safe work environment. Dentists especially are at high risk for COVID exposure given the close proximity to the patient's mouth and nose. The unique design of this mask may protect a user's neck and chin area, yet provides their heads and necks with a wide range of motion. Healthcare workers in private practice settings can use the surgical masks in their own offices. Many face shields are designed to be single use and disposable, which is not environmentally sustainable.
- An embodiment of the face shield may be designed to be reusable and may be made of acrylic Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which may be a recyclable material. Often the reusable face shields that are available have complex designs with turning knobs and deep crevices, making them very difficult to confidently disinfect after use, especially after exposure to a COVID positive patient. The germs, bacteria, viruses (e.g., corona virus) can easily settle into the deeper surfaces of the shield, putting the user at risk for exposure.
- The surgical mask described below may includes relatively smooth surfaces, making it very easy to disinfect all the surfaces with a sanitizing wipe or spray. Additionally, the face shield may be dishwasher safe providing another way for the user to confidently disinfect the shield. The mask may be recyclable and dishwasher safe, making it easy to disinfect for the everyday consumer, not just those working in a hospital or other medical setting.

FIG. 1A discloses asurgical mask 100 worn by a user. Thesurgical mask 100 may include ashield portion 101 and astrap portion 120. While the mask may be described as a surgical mask, it may be utilized for any manner to prevent the spread of germs and viruses. Theshield portion 101 may be transparent or translucent to allow a users to see through the shield, but however, allow the user to be protected from viruses, germs, etc. Theshield portion 101 may be secured to thestrap portion 120 by multiple different mechanisms. For example, the shield portion may include an opening orslot 107 to secure with apush pin 125 that extends out from thefront surface 123 of thestrap 120. Thus, an opening to a slot may have a larger size or diameter than thepush pin 125. Theshield 101 may also include a back rib that secures to afront rib 121 of thestrap 120. The back rib of theshield 101 may be secured utilizing afastener 119 that may be inserted into holes (which may be threaded) that align in thefront rib portion 121 andback rib 114. - The
strap portion 120 may also include avertical strap 140 that may be secured around the user's head. As explained in detail below, thevertical strap 140 may be secured utilizing various fastening methods, such as male tabs that are inserted in an opening, Velcro, or other fastening methods. Thevertical strap 140 may be removable from the rest of thestrap 120, thus making it an option for some users to wear or not to wear. Thus, the portion of thestrap 120 that secured around the circumference of the head (e.g., the forehead and back of the head) may be enough to secure thesurgical mask 100 to the user. -
FIG. 1B discloses an exploded assembly view of the surgical mask and associated components. As explained above, thesurgical mask 100 may include ashield portion 101. The shield portion may include aback rib portion 114 that extends away form a back surface (e.g., a surface near a user's face when worn) and towards the user. Theback rib portion 114 may have a variety of different shapes, including an upside down “U” configuration as shown inFIG. 1B and the disclosed embodiment. Additionally, theback rib 114 may also include a two vertical flanges that are connected to a horizontal plane that extends away from theshield 101. Because theshield portion 101 and theband portion 120 may be made from the same material and formed from the same injection mold, it may be easy for this mask to be disinfected. Theshield 101 may include multiple flange portions 110 as shown. The flange portions 110 may include a left flange portion and a right flange portion. Each flange portion may also include aslot opening 107 andslot 109. The opening and slot may allow theshield portion 101 to be secured to thestrap portion 120 via the push pins 125. Thus, the push pins 125 may align with theslot opening 107 and slot 109 to allow theshield 101 to be secured to thestrap 120. Theleft edge 111 may also have a corresponding right edge. The top edge 105 may be in contact with an area that may be in contact with the frontribbed portion 121 and be proximate to the back ribbedportion 114 of theshield 101. - The
surgical mask 100 may include one ormore bands 120 or astrap portion 120 that are utilized to secure to thesurgical mask 100 to a user's head. Thestrap portion 120 may be injection molded and made of material that is easy to disinfect or wash to avoid spreading diseases or germs, such as COVID-19. Thestrap portion 120 may be injection molded from the same material as theshield portion 101. Thestrap portion 120 may include multiple parts or portions. The strap portion may include afront surface 123 and a back surface. The back surface of thestrap 120 may come in contact with a person's head when in operation. Thestrap portion 120 may include afront rib 121 which extends away from a front surface of the band. Therib portion 121 may be placed in the center of the strap portion 120 (e.g., band 120) or near the center of the band to align with theback rib portion 114 of theshield 101. By placing therib portion 121 in the center of thestrap 120, therib portion 121 may provide optimal comfort to the user when theface shield 101 is utilized and placed onto a head of a user. In another embodiment, the area of the strap that therib portion 121 is placed may have a larger width than the rest of thestrap 120. - The
rib portion 121 may have a variety of designs for utilization in thesurgical mask 100. For example, in one embodiment, therib portion 121 may simply be an outwardly protruding vertical material. In another embodiment, therib portion 121 may have an “H” configuration and include two outwardly protruding vertical materials spaced apart that are connected by an outwardly protruding horizontal material to connect the two vertical materials. The horizontal material may be located in the middle between to the two vertical materials, or anywhere between a top side and bottom side of the horizontal materials. Thus, if the horizontal material is located at the bottom side, it may create a “U” configuration and if located on the top side, it may create an upside down “U” configuration. Thefront rib portion 121 and the back-rib portion 114 may align and secure with one another. - The
strap 120 may also include one ormore pins 125 that protrude from the front surface of the strap. Thepins 125 may be placed near a location that would rest on a temple of a user's head. Thepins 125 may be utilized to allow theshield portion 101 to be placed onto thestrap portion 120. Thus, thepins 125 may provide a secure connection between the shield portion and the strap, but however, may allow the face shield to be removed from the strap. As shown in the figures, the pin may have a head portion that has a larger area than a base portion. The base portion may be in contact with the front surface of the band. The head portion of thepin 125 may be smaller (e.g., front surface area or diameter) than theslot opening 107, but smaller than theslot 109 to allow thepin 125 to be inserted but secured to theshield 101. Each of the pins of the band may be equal distance apart from each end of the band or from the front rib portion. - The
band 120 may also include an adjustable strap portion that includes a plurality ofmale tabs 129 that extend away from the front surface of the strap. Theband 120 may include a female portion, or a plurality ofholes 133, which received themale tabs 129 to secure each end of the band. The band may have the male tabs on one portion of the band that is on a certain side of a user's head when worn (e.g., the right side), while the female portion (e.g., the plurality of holes to receive the male tabs) is on another side of the user's head when worn (e.g., the left side). For example, thestrap portion 120 may also include aright band portion 131 that include a plurality offemale holes 133. The plurality offemale holes 133 may engage with themale tabs 129 to secure the surgical mask to a user's head. When one or moremale tabs 129 engage with thefemale holes 133, they may connect theleft strap portion 127 to theright strap portion 131 to secure around a user's head. While multiple strap portions are depicted in the illustration, it is easily conceivable that less or more parts may be utilized. For example, thestrap portion 120 may be one entire piece instead of the multiple pieces (e.g., middle strap portion, left strap 127,right strap 131,vertical strap 140 shown as two pieces but could be one piece or more). - The
strap portion 120 may also include atop band portion 140. Thestrap portion 120 may include one or moretop band portions 120. For example,FIG. 1B illustrates twovertical strap portions 140. Thevertical strap portions 140 may be secured to thestrap 120 utilizingmale tabs 137 that are inserted intoholes 135 of the middle strap portion. Of course, in alternative embodiments the vertical strap may be removed or integral to thestrap portion 120. The sizing for thevertical straps 140 may be adjusted utilizing the vertical strapmale tabs 143 that are secured to the vertical strapfemale openings 145. Thus, the male tabs may be utilized for both securing the surgical mask to the top of a user's head via thevertical straps 140 and around the user's strap utilizing theleft strap 127 andright strap 131. -
FIG. 2 discloses a left side view of thesurgical mask 100. Theshield 101 may include a top edge 105, as well as afront surface 103. The shield may also include a left edge 111 (left being the orientation of the user wearing the mask 100). Theshield 101 may have theleft edge 111 and right edge 112 (as shown by dotted lines inFIG. 2 ) meet to form abottom valley 113. Thebottom valley 113 portion may be utilized to cover a person's chin when wearing thesurgical mask 100. Theshield 101 may also include a connection portion to connect theshield 101 to the straps for wearing. In one embodiment, theshield 101 may include aslot opening 107 and aslot 109. Theslot opening 107 may be larger in area, diameter, circumference, shape, etc., than theslot 109. Theslot opening 107 may be larger than corresponding push pins 125 of thestrap portion 120. Theslot opening 107 may allow for the pins of the strap to be inserted. When the pins are inserted, however, the mask can be pulled to engage the pins with theslot 109, which will secure theshield 101 to thestrap portion 120 but prevent theshield 101 from becoming unsecure and falling off. Theslot opening 107 andslot 109 may be located at a flange portion 110 of theshield 101. The flange portion 110 may sit proximate a temporal area of a user's head when worn. -
FIG. 3 discloses a right-side view of the surgical mask. As shown, theshield 101 may be secured to thestrap portion 120 via thepush pin 125 being inserted into theslot 107. Theslot 107 andpush pin 125 may be aligned with one another and located near a temple area of the user's head. An optionaltop strap portion 140 may includefemale openings 133 that become secured via male tabs of another vertical strap portion on the left-side of the surgical mask. The mask is also secured to the user's head via thefemale openings 133 of theright strap 131 being attached to the male tabs on the left-side. As shown inFIG. 3 , theshield portion 101 may have a negative curvature and a bottom valley point. -
FIG. 4 discloses a front view of the surgical mask. As shown in the front view, theleft edge 111 andright edge 112 of theshield 101 meet at thebottom valley portion 113. At the center of theshield 101 may be backrib 114 that is utilized to provide extra securing of theshield 101 to the strap 102. Thetop strap portions 140 may be secured to a top of the users head and connected to one another via the male tabs being inserted into the female openings. Also as shown, when assembled, the push pins 125 may extend outside of a front surface of the shield. Thus the top surface of the head of thepush pin 125 may be the furthest extending portion of the surgical mask, while the bottom surface of the head of thepush pin 125 may be in contact with the front surface of the surgical mask. -
FIG. 5 discloses a cross-sectional view of the surgical mask. This view may show how theshield portion 101 is secured to theband portion 120 in additional detail. Theshield portion 101 may include aback rib 114 that extends away from a back surface of theshield 101. Theback rib 114 may at or near the top edge of the shield. Theback rib 114 of theshield 101 may include one or more holes that may align with one or more holes of thefront rib 121. Therib fastener 119 may be a separate component or built-in to either theback rib 114 of theshield 101 or thefront rib 121 of thestrap 120. Thus, therib fastener 119 may be integral to thefront rib 121 and place into a hole of theback rib 114. In another embodiment, the rib fastener may be integral to theback rib 114 and placed into a hole of thefront rib 121. Thus, thefront rib 121 may rest upon a top surface of theback rib 114. In the embodiment shown, theback rib 114 rests on top of ahorizontal rib surface 122 of thefront rib 121. Therib fastener 119 may be utilized to secure the two rib portions utilizing an interference fit with the holes of the rib portions, a snap-fit connection, or a threaded connection. It may be advantageous to allow the disconnection of thefront rib 121 to theback rib 114 in order to disassemble the facemask for disinfecting. - The contour of the
shield 101 may align with shape a human face. Thus, from the top edge of theshield 101, the mask may protrude out slightly in the nose and mouth area of the face, but then extend into the neck area and under the chin towards the bottom valley portion of theshield 101. Thus, the shield may have a negative curvature. As such, the top of the mask may be somewhat spaced apart from an imaginary line extending from the top to the bottom of the users face from a top section of the shield (e.g., near forehead). The mask may extend out further from the imaginary vertical line at a middle section of the shield (e.g., near face and nose). Then the mask may extend into the imaginary vertical line at a bottom section of the shield (e.g., near the chin and neck area of the face). -
FIG. 6 discloses an orthogonal view of thestrap portion 120. Thesurgical mask 100 may include one ormore bands 120 or astrap portion 120 that are utilized to secure to thesurgical mask 100 to a user's head. Thestrap portion 120 may be injection molded and made of material that is easy to disinfect or wash to avoid spreading diseases or germs, such as COVID-19. Thestrap portion 120 may be injection molded from the same material of theshield portion 101. Thestrap portion 120 may include multiple parts or portions. The strap portion may include afront surface 123 and a back surface. The back surface may come in contact with a person's head when in operation. Thestrap portion 120 may include afront rib 121 which extends away from a front surface of the band. Therib portion 121 may be placed in the center of the strap portion 120 (e.g., band 120) or near the center of the band.
- The
strap 120 may also include one ormore pins 125 that protrude from the front surface of the strap. Each of the pins of the band may be equal distance a part from each end of the band or from the front rib portion. - The
band 120 may also include an adjustable strap portion that includes a plurality of male tabs that extend away from the front surface of the strap. The band may include a female portion, or a plurality of holes, which received the male tabs to secure each end of the band. The band may have the male tabs on one portion of the band that is on a certain side of a user's head when worn (e.g., the right side), while the female portion (e.g., the plurality of holes to receive the male tabs) is on another side of the user's head when worn (e.g., the left side). - The
strap portion 120 may also include aright band portion 131 that include a plurality offemale holes 133. The plurality offemale holes 133 may engage with themale tabs 129 to secure the surgical mask to a user's head. When one or moremale tabs 129 engage with thefemale holes 133, they may connect theleft strap portion 127 to theright strap portion 131 to secure around a user's head. -
FIG. 7 discloses an orthogonal view of a middle section of the band portion Therib portion 121 may be shown to extend away from a forehead of the user more than any other portion of the strap portion. - The
rib portion 121 may be relatively thin compared to the rest of the band, with various portions extending away from thefront surface 123 of thestrap 120. Therib portion 121 may have various pieces that run an entire height of thefront surface 123 of the band portion. Therib portion 121 may be located at an area has the most height or surface area of the strap. The strap may include one ormore holes 135 that may be utilized to put on various other portions of the strap, such as the left strap portion with male pegs or the right strap portion with female holes. In addition, theholes 135 may be utilized for avertical strap portion 140. Such portions may include male pegs that are inserted inholes 135 secure the various portions of the strap to one another. The strap may include one or more push pins 125 to be utilized to secure theshield 101 to thestrap portion 120. - As shown, the
strap 120 may encompass a circumference of a user's head and wrap around the forehead and top and back of a user's head when the additional strap portions are attached toholes 135. Thevertical strap portion 140 may be sized appropriately to a user's head utilizing themale tabs 137 of the strap. The various portions of the strap may be connected to each other utilizing various securing mechanisms, such as a male tab. Thevertical strap portion 140 may be used to secure the middle strap portion to a top of a user's head. Thevertical strap portion 140 may be adjusted in sizing utilizingvertical tabs 143 inserted into vertical strapfemale openings 145. Thus, thevertical strap portion 140 may add additional securing of the surgical mask to the user's head and additionally mitigate movement from the surgical mask to the user's head. -
