- With reference to
FIG. 1 , a medicalface shield device 10 is illustrated being worn by a user to cover the user's face. Theface shield device 10 can, for example, protect the user's face from airborne pathogens while the user is providing medical assistance to a patient. For example, the medicalface shield device 10 can be used while a user is providing medical assistance to a patient to prevent airborne pathogens from the patient from entering the user's mouth, eyes, nose, and/or ears. For further example, airborne pathogens may be contained in droplets of saliva or mucus from the patient as the patient exhales, coughs, sneezes, etc. The medicalface shield device 10 can prevent those droplets, and any airborne pathogens contained in those droplets, from entering the user's mouth, eyes, nose, and/or ears. In this way, the medicalface shield device 10 can prevent the airborne pathogens from the patient from infecting the user while the user is wearing the medicalface shield device 10. - The medical
face shield device 10 includes avisor 12 and aface shield 14 that attaches to thevisor 12. In particular, theface shield 14 can wrap around and form to correspond to the shape of the perimeter edge of thevisor 12. Theface shield 14 can be, for example, a clear polycarbonate sheet having a thickness of 0.5 millimeters, although other thicknesses can be used. Theface shield 14 can have sufficient flexibility to wrap around the perimeter of thevisor 12 when attached to thevisor 12. Theface shield 14 can be sufficiently sized to cover the user's eyes, nose, and mouth. Theface shield 14 can also be sufficiently sized to cover the user's ears. - The medical
face shield device 10 also includes anelastic strap 24 that attaches to thevisor 12 and holds thevisor 12 andface shield 14 in place on the user's head. Theelastic strap 24 attaches to thevisor 12 via an elasticstrap locking mechanism 16, shown in further detail with reference toFIGS. 2A to 2E . For example, as shown inFIGS. 1 to 3B , thevisor 12 can include two elasticstrap locking mechanisms 16 on opposite sides or ends of the visor located adjacent to the user's temples when the user is wearing the medicalface shield device 10. For example, as shown inFIGS. 1 to 3B , the two elasticstrap locking mechanisms 16 can be located on the opposite sides or ends of the visor such that the elastic strap locking mechanisms are located on opposite sides of the user's head when the user is wearing the medicalface shield device 10. - With reference to
FIGS. 2A to 2B , each of the elasticstrap locking mechanisms 16 has a ladder design with a plurality ofslots slots strap locking mechanisms 16 in the FIGS., additional or fewer slots can be used. Theslots elastic strap 24. For example, the slots can 18, 20, 22 can have a width that corresponds to, or is slightly larger than, the width of theelastic strap 24. -
FIGS. 2A to 2E illustrate different stages of attaching theelastic strap 24 to one of the elasticstrap locking mechanisms 16. For example, inFIG. 2A , theelastic strap 24 is shown just before it is attached to the elasticstrap locking mechanism 16.FIG. 2B illustrates the elastic strap after it has been fed through afirst slot 18 of the elasticstrap locking mechanism 16. As shown inFIG. 2B , theelastic strap 24 enters thefirst slot 18 from a top side of thefirst slot 18 and exits thefirst slot 18 from a bottom side of thefirst slot 18. -
FIG. 2C illustrates theelastic strap 24 after it has been fed through thefirst slot 18 as well as thesecond slot 20. As shown inFIG. 2C , theelastic strap 24 enters thesecond slot 20 from a bottom side of thesecond slot 20 and exits thesecond slot 20 from a top side of thesecond slot 20. -
FIG. 2D illustrates theelastic strap 24 after it has been fed through thefirst slot 18 and thesecond slot 20 as well as thethird slot 22. As shown inFIG. 2D , theelastic strap 24 enters thethird slot 22 from a top side of thethird slot 22 and exits thethird slot 20 from a bottom side of thethird slot 22. -
FIGS. 2B through 2D illustrate theelastic strap 24 as it is loosely fed through the plurality ofslots -
FIG. 2E illustrates theelastic strap 24 after it has been pulled tight to remove slack in theelastic strap 24 present in the plurality ofslots strap locking mechanism 16. As shown inFIG. 2E , theelastic strap 24 is pulled slightly in a direction away from the elasticstrap locking mechanism 16 to engage the elastic strap locking mechanism. - Once the
elastic strap 24 has been fed through the plurality ofslots strap locking mechanism 16 and the slack has been removed, the friction between the plurality ofslots strap locking mechanism 16 hold theelastic strap 24 in place. In this way, theelastic strap 24 can be installed to engage with the elasticstrap locking mechanism 16 in the manner described above and the medicalface shield device 10 can then be worn by the user, as shown inFIG. 1 , and held in place on the head of the user to protect the face of the user. In this way, an additional or separate locking or attachment mechanism is not needed to attach the elastic strap to thevisor 12. - Further, a size of the loop of the
elastic strap 24 and/or a tightness of the medicalface shield device 10 on the user can be adjusted by pulling more or less of theelastic strap 24 through the elasticstrap locking mechanism 16. For example, pulling more of theelastic strap 24 through the elasticstrap locking mechanism 16 towards a front of thevisor 12 will tighten loop of theelastic strap 24 and tighten the medicalface shield device 10 against the user's head and face. Pulling some of theelastic strap 24 out from elasticstrap locking mechanism 16 in a direction away fromvisor 12 will loosen the loop of theelastic strap 24 and loosen the medical face shield device against the user's head and face. - In
FIGS. 2A to 2E , theelastic strap 24 is shown entering thefirst slot 18 from a top side of thevisor 12, entering thesecond slot 20 from a bottom side of the visor, and entering thethird slot 22 from a top side of the visor, with a terminal end of theelastic strap 24 hanging downward from thethird slot 22. In an alternative embodiment, theelastic strap 24 can instead enter thefirst slot 18 from the bottom side of the visor, enter thesecond slot 20 from the top side of thevisor 12, and enter thethird slot 22 from the bottom side of thevisor 12. In this way, the terminal end of theelastic strap 24 would be located on the top side of thevisor 12. - With reference to
FIGS. 3A and 3B , attachment of theface shield 14 to thevisor 12 is illustrated. Thevisor 12 has a plurality ofprotrusions visor 12. Theface shield 14 hasapertures face shield 14 at positions corresponding to theprotrusions protrusions protrusions apertures face shield 14 is attached to thevisor 12 and locked in to place. - The foregoing description of the embodiments has been provided for purposes of illustration and description.
