-
FIG. 1 shows an exterior surface 1 of a blank 3 andliner 5 for forming a package 7 (FIG. 6 ) containing a food product F (FIG. 4 ) according to a first embodiment of the disclosure. In the illustrated embodiment, the blank 3 forms a wrap or construct 9 that wraps around the food product F and the liner 5 (FIG. 6 ). The package 7 can contain the food product F, which can be a fast-food item (e.g., sandwich, burrito, wrap, etc.) or any other suitable food item or non-food item. In some embodiments, theconstruct 9 can act as a holder to be used by a consumer to hold the food product F during consumption. In addition, or alternatively, theconstruct 9 can be used to carry the food product and reinforce the package 7. Further, the food product F can be contained in the package 7 and placed in a microwave oven for heating prior to consumption, or the food product F can be cooked or heated prior to being placed in the package 7. - In the illustrated embodiment, the
liner 5 can comprise a flexible sheet of material, for example, paper, a polymer film, metallic foil, a laminate, etc., that may be suitable for forming a flexible package, such as a pouch, or otherwise may be suitable for wrapping the food product F. Theconstruct 9 may comprise a reinforcing sheet comprising a dimensionally stable and/or somewhat rigid or stiff material (e.g., paperboard) that may be suitable for being folded into a desired structure and substantially maintain its configuration, while providing some inherent degree of flexibility to the package 7. As discussed below, theconstruct 9 has locking features for securing the construct to the food product F and features for facilitating forming of the construct around the food product. - As shown in
FIG. 1 , the blank 3 has a lateral axis L1 and a longitudinal axis L2. In the illustrated embodiment, the blank 3 includes a plurality oflateral fold lines 11 extending across the width of the blank 3. In one embodiment, the blank 3 can include afirst end 10 and an opposingsecond end 12. In addition, afirst portion 13 can be disposed adjacent thefirst end 10 and asecond portion 14 can be disposed adjacent thesecond end 12 so that thefirst portion 13 can at least partially overlap thesecond portion 14 when theconstruct 9 is wrapped around theliner 5 and the food item F in the package 7 (FIG. 6 ). As shown inFIG. 1 , thefirst portion 13 and thesecond portion 14 can be spaced apart from one another in the longitudinal L2 direction. Stated another way, the blank 3 has a length extending from thefirst end 10 to thesecond end 12, and thefirst portion 13 and thesecond portion 13 are spaced apart from one another along the length of the blank 3 so that thefirst portion 13 is closer to thefirst end 10 and thesecond portion 14 is closer to thesecond end 12 along the longitudinal length of the blank 3. The blank 3 can include aproduct identification panel 61 with a suitable logo adjacent thefirst end 10 of the blank. The blank 3 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, positioned, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure. - In the illustrated embodiment, a
male locking feature 15 can be formed by acut 17 in thefirst portion 13 of the blank 3 and a plurality of female locking features 19 can be formed byrespective cuts 21 in thesecond portion 14 of the blank 3. As shown inFIG. 1 , thecut 17 is generally U-shaped and has curved ends that curve away from thefirst end 10 of the blank 3. Accordingly, thecut 17 can form amale locking tab 23 that is directed away from thefirst end 10. Themale locking tab 23 and thecut 17 can interrupt one of thelateral fold lines 11, which can help themale locking tab 23 to pivot with respect to a remainder of the blank so that the male locking tab can be more easily engaged with one of the female locking features 19 (FIG. 6 ). In one embodiment, thecuts 21 are collinear with a respectivelateral fold line 11 and havecurved end portions 22 that are curved toward thefirst end 10 of the blank 3. In the illustrated embodiment, one or more of thecuts 21 can form a respective female locking opening with a lockingedge 24 for receiving the male locking tab 23 (FIG. 6 ). Any of the locking features could be omitted or could be otherwise shaped, arranged, positioned, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure. - As shown in
FIG. 1 , theliner 5 is disposed on an interior surface of the blank 3 so that the portions of theliner 5 that are covered by the blank 3 are drawn in phantom. In the illustrated embodiment, theliner 5 can include a bottommarginal portion 25, a topmarginal portion 27, and acentral portion 29 therebetween. The bottommarginal portion 25 can be connected to thecentral portion 29 by agusset 52 with two gusset panels 51 (e.g., a first gusset panel and a second gusset panel). Thegusset 52 can include threefolds 50 in theliner 5 so that the twogusset panels 51 are foldably connected to the respective bottommarginal portion 25 andcentral portion 29 alongrespective folds 50, and so that thegusset panels 51 are foldably connected to one another along theintermediate fold 50. In one embodiment, thefolds 50 can be generally parallel to the longitudinal axis L2 and to the length of the blank 3. As shown inFIG. 1 , the liner 5 (e.g., the central portion 29) can be attached to the blank 3 along a longitudinal glue line 40 (e.g., so that one of thefolds 50 is generally aligned with an edge of the blank 3 as shown inFIG. 1 ). Additionally, theliner 5 can includelateral glue lines 42 for at least partially sealing the end portions of theliner 5 in the package 7 (FIGS. 2-6 ). Theliner 5 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, positioned, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure. - As shown in
FIGS. 2 and 3 , the bottommarginal portion 25 of theliner 5 can be folded over thecentral portion 29 of the liner at thegusset 52 to form apouch 28. Thegusset 52 can be folded so that thegusset panels 51 are folded inwardly between thecentral portion 29 and the bottommarginal portion 25 and form a gusseted bottom of thepouch 28. Abottom edge 26 of the bottommarginal portion 25 and of theliner 5 is disposed to overlay thecentral portion 29 so that anopening 30 is formed between thecentral portion 29 and the bottom edge 26 (FIG. 4 ). The glue lines 42 can generally seal the ends of thepouch 28 adjacent the respective ends 10, 12 of the blank 3. As shown inFIG. 3 , the pouch 28 (as well as thebottom edge 26 and the folds 50) extend in the longitudinal direction L2 along the length of the blank 3. Thepouch 28 could be otherwise formed without departing from the disclosure. - As shown in
FIG. 4 , a food item F can be inserted through theopening 30 to be at least partially received in thepouch 28 between the bottommarginal portion 25 and thecentral portion 29 of theliner 5. Subsequently, as shown inFIG. 5 , the topmarginal portion 27 can be folded over theopening 30 and thepouch 28 to at least partially enclose the food item F in thepouch 28. Theliner 5 further can be folded to wrap around the food item F by folding theend margins 32 of the folded liner over the food item F to be in overlapping relationship with one another as shown inFIG. 6 . - In the illustrated embodiment, the package 7 can be formed by folding the blank 3 (e.g., along the lateral fold lines 11) around the food item F wrapped in the
liner 5 so that thefirst portion 13 overlaps and engages thesecond portion 14 to form theconstruct 9 that encircles the food product (FIG. 6 ). Accordingly, while thefirst portion 13 and thesecond portion 14 are spaced from one another along the length of theconstruct 9, the wrapping of theconstruct 9 around theliner 5 and the food item F results in thefirst portion 13 at least partially overlapping thesecond portion 14 so that themale locking tab 23 can engage one of the female locking cuts 21. In the illustrated embodiment, theconstruct 9 is wrapped around theliner 5 and the food product F so that the longitudinal length of the construct is curved around the package 7. Thefirst portion 13 and thesecond portion 14 of theconstruct 9 are closer to the respectivefirst end 10 and thesecond end 12 along this curved length of theconstruct 9 relative to one another. In one embodiment, the fold lines 11 can facilitate the formation of theconstruct 9 by allowing the blank 3 to fold and conform to the shape of the food product F. - As shown in
FIG. 6 , themale locking tab 23 can be aligned with one of thecuts 21 so that themale locking feature 15 can be engaged with one of the female locking features 19. For example, for larger food items F, themale locking feature 15 can engage one of the female locking features 19 closer to thesecond end 12 of the blank 3, and for smaller food items F, themale locking feature 15 can engage one of the female locking features 19 farther from thesecond end 12. Generally, themale locking tab 23 is inserted into a selected female locking opening of thefemale locking feature 19 based on the size of the food product and the desired tightness of the fit of the construct around the food product. As shown inFIG. 6 , themale locking tab 23 and the portion of the construct adjacent thefirst end 10 can be folded along one of thelateral fold lines 11 so that themale locking tab 23 pivots inwardly with respect to the remainder of theconstruct 9. Accordingly, themale locking tab 23 can be pushed through thecut 21 of the selectedfemale locking feature 19 so that themale locking tab 23 engages the lockingedge 24 of thefemale locking feature 19. Themale locking feature 15 can be otherwise engaged with thefemale locking feature 19 without departing from the disclosure. Additionally, thefirst portion 13 and thesecond portion 14 of theconstruct 9 can be otherwise engaged and/or secured to one another. For example, in addition or alternatively to themale locking feature 15 and the female locking features 19, thefirst portion 13 and thesecond portion 14 could be secured together by an adhesive (e.g., an adhesive sticker, retack glue, and/or tape) or any other suitable securing method. In one embodiment, an adhesive sticker and/or any other suitable securing method could be applied to theliner 5 to secure portions of the liner (e.g., the end margins 32) to one another and/or to theconstruct 9. - In an alternative embodiment shown in
FIG. 7 , the blank 3′ can be generally similar to the blank 3 of the first embodiment except that theproduct identification panel 61 and/or the logo can be omitted in the alternative blank 3′. The alternative blank 3′ could be otherwise shaped, arranged, positioned, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure. -

In one embodiment, thecuts 237 can include nicks, but the cuts could be other lines of weakening (e.g., tear lines, etc.) to allow theindicator tabs 235 to be folded relative to the blank 203 without departing from the disclosure. In an exemplary embodiment, theindicator tabs 235 can be used (e.g., folded with respect to the remainder of the blank 203) to differentiate the food item F contained in thepackage 207 between a number of options (e.g., a chicken sandwich versus a cheeseburger). Theindicator tabs 235 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, positioned, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure. - As shown in
FIG. 28 , theliner 205 can include a bottommarginal portion 245 connected to acentral portion 246 by agusset 252 withfolds 250. Thegusset 252 can be similar to thegusset 52 of the first embodiment.Scrap portions 256 can be removed from thegusset 252, the bottommarginal portion 245, and thecentral portion 256 so that the pouch 248 (FIGS. 29, 30, and 32 ) has rounded corners. Additional scrap portions can be removed at the opposing corners of the top marginal portion so that the top marginal portion also has rounded corners. As shown inFIG. 28 , theliner 205 can include seal features 254, which can include glue, for example, for at least partially sealing the end portions of thepouch 248. Theliner 205 could be otherwise shaped, arranged, positioned, and/or configured without departing from the disclosure. For example, one or more of the seal features 254 could be omitted. - As shown in
FIG. 29 , the bottommarginal portion 245 can be folded over via thegusset 252 and adhered to thecentral portion 246 at the seal features 254 to form thepouch 248. Additionally, theliner 205 can be glued to the blank 203. In the illustrated embodiment, thepouch 248 is oriented to be generally transverse to the longitudinal length of the blank 203 (e.g., along the width of the blank) and disposed on thesecond portion 210 adjacent thepanel 213 c. As shown inFIGS. 30 and 31 , the blank 203 can be folded along one or more of thetransverse fold lines 11 so that one or more of thepanels pouch 248 for reinforcing the pouch in the interior of thepackage 207. In one embodiment, thepanels - A food item F can be inserted at least partially into the
pouch 248 as shown inFIG. 32 . In one embodiment, thebottom gusset 252 of the liner allows expansion of thepouch 248 to accommodate various sizes of food product F in thepackage 207. The end portions of theliner 205 can be folded over the food item and one or more of thepanels FIG. 33 . As shown inFIG. 34 , thefirst portion 208 of the blank 205 can be folded over thesecond portion 210 and the food item F, the top marginal portion of theliner 205 folding over the food item F as well to form theconstruct 209 that encircles the food product. Accordingly,FIG. 34 shows theliner 205 and theconstruct 209 wrapped around the food item F to enclose the food item, and thefirst portion 208 of theconstruct 209 overlaps thesecond portion 210 of the construct. As shown inFIGS. 34-37 , thefirst portion 208 of theconstruct 209 at least partially overlaps thepanels - As shown in
FIGS. 35 and 36 , themale locking tab 231 is inserted into a selected female locking opening 225 of the selectedfemale locking feature 223 based on the size of the food product and the tightness of the fit of theconstruct 209 around the food product. As themale locking tab 231 is inserted into the selectedopening 225, theprotrusion 219 of themale locking feature 215 can pass through the respective opening and/or through thecurved cut 227 of thefemale locking feature 223. Once engaged, theedge 219 a of theprotrusion 219 can catch against the construct at thecurved cut 227 and/or at edge of theopening 225 to help prevent themale locking tab 231 from be prematurely removed from the opening and to help retain themale locking tab 231 against the lockingedge 226 a of theopening 225.FIG. 37 illustrates the engagement of themale locking feature 215 with thefemale locking feature 223 in theconstruct 209 with theliner 205 and the food item F omitted for clarity. In one embodiment, the fold lines 11 and thepanels pouch 248 by allowing theliner 205 to expand and hold the food product F. Additionally, thelateral fold lines package 207 could be formed by additional or different steps without departing from the disclosure. Additionally, thefirst portion 208 and thesecond portion 210 of theconstruct 209 can be otherwise engaged and/or secured to one another. For example, in addition or alternatively to themale locking feature 215 and the female locking features 223, thefirst portion 208 and thesecond portion 210 could be secured together by an adhesive (e.g., an adhesive sticker, retack glue, and/or tape) or any other suitable securing method. In one embodiment, an adhesive sticker and/or any other suitable securing method could be applied to theliner 205 to secure portions of the liner to one another and/or to theconstruct 209. - In one embodiment, the
package 207 can be formed in a similar manner in a system and method 100 of forming reinforced packages as shown and disclosed in U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62/179,480, filed on May 8, 2015, that is incorporated by reference herein for all purposes. As disclosed in the '480 patent application, theliner 5 can be formed by attaching a web of liner material to the blank 3 to form an attached web and moving the attached web through a packaging machine to form theliner 5 having the gusseted bottom portion and the pouch 48. Further, thepackage 207 can be formed in any other suitable manner without departing from the disclosure. - Any of the features of the various embodiments of the disclosure can be combined with, replaced by, or otherwise configured with other features of other embodiments of the disclosure without departing from the scope of this disclosure.
- Generally, as described herein, liners or bags can be formed from a bag stock material, although various plastic or other bag materials also can be used, and can be lined or coated with a desired material. The reinforcing cartons described herein can be made from a more rigid material such as a clay-coated natural kraft (“CCNK”). Other materials such various card-stock, paper, plastic or other synthetic or natural materials also can be used to form the components of the packages described herein.
- The blank according to the present disclosure can be, for example, formed from coated paperboard and similar materials. For example, the interior and/or exterior sides of the blank can be coated with a clay coating. The clay coating may then be printed over with product, advertising, price coding, and other information or images. The blank may then be coated with a varnish to protect any information printed on the blank. The blank may also be coated with, for example, a moisture barrier layer, on either or both sides of the blank. In accordance with the above-described embodiments, the blank may be constructed of paperboard of a caliper such that it is heavier and more rigid than ordinary paper. The blank can also be constructed of other materials, such as cardboard, hard paper, or any other material having properties suitable for enabling the carton to function at least generally as described above. The blank can also be laminated to or coated with one or more sheet-like materials at selected panels or panel sections.
- In accordance with the above-described embodiments of the present disclosure, a fold line can be any substantially linear, although not necessarily straight, form of weakening that facilitates folding there along. More specifically, but not for the purpose of narrowing the scope of the present disclosure, fold lines include: a score line, such as lines formed with a blunt scoring knife, or the like, which creates a crushed portion in the material along the desired line of weakness; a cut that extends partially into a material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of cuts that extend partially into and/or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness; and various combinations of these features. In situations where cutting is used to create a fold line, typically the cutting will not be overly extensive in a manner that might cause a reasonable user to incorrectly consider the fold line to be a tear line or other line of disruption.
- As an example, a tear line can include: a slit that extends partially into the material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of spaced apart slits that extend partially into and/or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness, or various combinations of these features. As a more specific example, one type tear line is in the form of a series of spaced apart slits that extend completely through the material, with adjacent slits being spaced apart slightly so that a nick (e.g., a small somewhat bridging-like piece of the material) is defined between the adjacent slits for typically temporarily connecting the material across the tear line. The nicks are broken during tearing along the tear line. The nicks typically are a relatively small percentage of the tear line, and alternatively the nicks can be omitted from or torn in a tear line such that the tear line is a continuous cut line. That is, it is within the scope of the present disclosure for each of the tear lines to be replaced with a continuous slit, or the like. For example, a cut line can be a continuous slit or could be wider than a slit without departing from the present disclosure.
- The above embodiments may be described as having one or more panels or components adhered together by glue during erection of the carton embodiments. The term “glue” is intended to encompass all manner of adhesives commonly used to secure carton panels in place.
- The foregoing description of the disclosure illustrates and describes various embodiments of the present disclosure. As various changes could be made in the above construction without departing from the scope of the disclosure, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Furthermore, the scope of the present disclosure covers various modifications, combinations, alterations, etc., of the above-described embodiments that are within the scope of the claims. Additionally, the disclosure shows and describes only selected embodiments of the disclosure, but the disclosure is capable of use in various other combinations, modifications, and environments and is capable of changes or modifications within the scope of the inventive concept as expressed herein, commensurate with the above teachings, and/or within the skill or knowledge of the relevant art. Furthermore, certain features and characteristics of each embodiment may be selectively interchanged and applied to other illustrated and non-illustrated embodiments of the disclosure without departing from the scope of the disclosure.
