a claims. (Cl. 24-248) This invention relates to garters and more partlcularly to a flat garter clasp or grip for supporting a garment without projecting bulges or buttons.

One object of this invention-is to provide a garter grip of the above nature which consists of only two parts, and may be conveniently made from fiat metal stampings without complicated forming and assembly operations.

A further object is to provide a garter grip of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eflicient and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view, there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawing two forms in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.

Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral Id indicates generally a garter grip comprising two members, to wit: a flat metal body frame I l, and a hinging T-shaped tongue member i2. The body frame H, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

consists of a lower pear -shaped open loop l3 pro-' vided with a pair of intermediate inwardly extending opposed ears I4 and 15 positioned in such a manner as to form a substantially key-hole shaped opening 16, the upper part of which is formed in the shape of a horizontal ellipse and merges into a lower semi-circular opening.

Theupper end of the frame i I is provided with a pair of cross bars I! and I8 between which is a transverse slot I9 for receiving the looped elastic garter strap 20. r

The T-shaped tongue member i2 comprises an intermediate longitudinal shank 2| terminating at its lower end in an integral circular head 22 and formed at its upper end with an integral transverse loop 23 having a longitudinal slot 26 therein. The slot 24 is adapted to substantially aline with the slot I9 when the garter is in closed position, and the upper cross bar 24a of the tongue loop 23 is adapted to be embraced by an elongated tubular hinge barrel 25 bent over from 00 the upper edge of the upper cross bar I! of the body frame ll, thus permitting the tongue member l2 to swing freely relative to the body frame it.

The hinge barrel 25 is preferably offset forwardly of the plane of the body frame I I to avoid 5 inwardly projecting parts which might cause discomfort to the wearer.

The garter strap 20 is adapted to be attached to any suitable supporting means such as a girdle In attaching the garter to a garment, such as 20 a stocking 21, the tongue member l2 will first be swung outwardly to a position such as shown in Fig. 2, so as to clear the key hole opening. it. The upper edge of the stocking 21 will then be formed in a loop 28 and drawn through the opening 56 suihciently far to permit the head 22 of the tongue I2 to be swung down into the stocking loop back to its normal position. At this time the stocking loop will be drawn flat across the front face of the head 22. As best shown in Fig. 5 go a portion of the stocking will then be embraced between that part of the circular tongue head 22 which overlaps the lower portion of the pear shapedloop l3, causing the adjacent portion of the stocking to be formed in a double reverse a; loop. By means 01' the above construction it will be seen that the greater the pull on the stocking, the stronger'will be the clamping action of the garter upon the edge of the stocking.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:

1. In a garter grip, a one-piece frame having an opening therein which is large enough to permit a loop in the top end of a stocking to be drawn therethrough, and a rigid tongue member hingedly connecteddirectly' to the upper end of said frame and adapted to swing away from the plane of said frame,-said tongue member being adapted to press said stocking tightly against said frame for holding it securely in detachable position, said tongue member lying at all times at one side of said frame.

2. Ina garter grip, a one-piece frame having a lower key-hole shaped slot and an upper transverse slot spaced therefrom, a rigid tongue member pivotally connected directly to said frame, and a head formed at the distal end of said tongue, said head being adapted to span the lower reduced portion of said key-hole slot and overlap the adjacent portion of said frame, for holding a garment securely in position, said tongue member lying at all times at one side of said frame.

3. Ina garter grip, a one-piece frame having a lower. key-hole shaped slot and an upper transverse slot spaced therefrom, a rigid tongue meniaber pivotally connected directly to said frame, and

a head formed at the distal end of said tongue and having a rubber jacket, said head being adapted to span the lower reduced portion of said key-hole slot and overlap the adjacent portion of said frame, for holding a garment securely in position, said tongue member lying at all times at one side of said frame.

4. In a garter grip, an open flat one-piece metal a transverse loop for direct pivotal eng t within said barrel, said tongue member having an enlarged head formed at, the distal end thereof. said head being adapted to span the lower reduced section of said slot and o'verlie the adjacent pors passed up through said key-hole slot, and the tension of said garment serving to hold said'head flat against said frame to cause said head and frame to clamp together on the edge of said garment.

5. In a garter grip, an open one-piece-metal frame comprising a lower pear-shaped ioopand an upper integral transverse elongated loop, a rigid tongue member having a transverse elongated loop pivotally connected directly to the upper end of the loop of said frame, the lower end of said tongue being adapted to receive a loop in theedge of a garment and serving to clamp said edge against said frame when tension is applied to said garment, said tongue member lying at all times at one side of said frame.

6. Inc. garter buckle, a sheet metal one-piece frame having a transverse strap-embracing cross bar and an intermediate cross bar, a rigid tongue member having direct pivotal connection with said intermediate cross bar, the lower end of said tongue member having an enlarged head adapted to receive the looped edge of a garment, and serving toclamp saidedge against saidframe when 80 said garment is under tension, said tongue member lying at all times at one side of said frame. v

7. In a garter grip, an open metal one-piece frame having a. straight upper cross bar, a rigid slotted tongue member having an upper cross bar :5 adapted to be brought adjacent the cross bar of said frame, a garment supported strap passing around said cross bars, the lower end of said tongue member being adapted to receive the looped edge of a garment and serving to clamp said 40 edge against said frame when tension is applied to said garment, said tongue member lying at all times at one sideof said frame.

8. In a garter buckle, an open metal one-piece frame having an upper cross bar for receiving a supported strap, a tongue member pivotally supported with respect to said frame and having an enlarged head on its lower end, the opposite edges of the lower end of said open metal frame having inwardly extending ears to cooperate with said go head for clamping upon the looped edge of a garment to be detachably supported thereby.
