Description

Oct. 15, 1935. J. LEVY I 2,017,698
SLIDE FASTENER Filed April 3, 1935 INVENTOR.
Patented Oct. 15, 1935 UNITED STATES SLIDE FASTENER Joseph Levy, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application April 3,1935, Serial No. 14,432
' 3 Claims. (01450-3) This invention relates to slide fasteners for the mouths of containers and has particular reference to a telescopically extensible and contractible slide fastener to respectively close and open the mouths of containers such as tobacco pouches, bathing bags, powder puff containers or The invention more'speciflcally contemplates a slide fastener composed of a plurality of slotted 20 hollow telescopically associated sections, one of which is secured to the container in alignment with the mouth thereof and another of which is slidably movable over the mouth of the container with the lips engaged, closed and retained in 25 closed relation by the slotted portion thereof.
The invention further provides in a slide fastener of the indicated character, a plurality of slotted tubular telescopically associated sections of progressively increasing cross sectional size 30 and provided with means for limiting the relative movement and preventing disengagement of the sections.
The invention further resides in the combination with a container having a linear mouth pro- 35 vided with beaded edges and sliding means fan.
closing the mouth which consists of relatively slidable elements adapted to clampingly engage continuously throughout the entire length of the mouth, the walls of the container body adjacent 40 their juncture with the beaded edges of the mouth.
Other objects of the invention reside in th provision of a device of the indicated character which is extremely simple in its construction and 45 mode of operation, which is inexpensive to produce and which is highly efiicient for its intended purpose.
With the above enumerated and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which there is disclosed, by way of example, a preferred embodiment of the invention, while the claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
7 In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is aperspective view of a container equipped with a sliding fastener means for closing the mouth and illustrating the same in closed condition. I
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sliding 5 fastener means in retracted position and the mouth of the container in opened condition.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the line 3---3 in Fig. 2, with a portion'of the upper edges of the container broken away. I
-Fig.' 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 4'4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, A designates a container or an equivalent 1' structure having a linear mouth l ll-andprovided withoppositely disposed beaded edges ll defining the mouth and formed on the opposite walls [2 of the container body.
A sliding fastener for closing and retaining the mouth in closed condition is provided which includes relatively slidable elements l5, l6, l1, and i8. In the present disclosure, the elements l5, l6, l1, and I 8 consist of a plurality of split tubular telescopically associated sections which,
when extended, as shown in Fig. 1, provide edges l9 continuously engaging throughout the entire length of the mouth, the walls l2 of the container body adjacent their juncture with the beaded edges I -the beaded edges and the mouth Hi being encompassed and completely enclosed by the tubular sections to prevent spillage of the contents.
In the form of .the invention illustrated, the section I 8 is fixed to the bag body A at one end of the mouth while the remaining sections are relatively slidable with respect to the fixed section It! and with reference to each other from the retracted position shown in Fig. 2 where they nest one over the other to permit of the opening of the mouth, to an extended position as shown in Fig. l where they close and retain the mouth in closed condition. While any means may be employed for limiting the relative sliding movement of the elements or sections, the limiting means shown consists of radially projecting stop lugs 20 formed adjacent the outer ends of the sections IS, IT, and I8 which engage in longitudinal slots 2| formed in the sections l5, l6 and II.
In order to facilitate the manipulation of the fastening means, the outer free end of the outermost section or element I5 is provided with an enlarged rim or bead 22 secured thereover, while the outer free end of the fixed section I8 is formed with a knob or bead 23. The section l8 P PATENT OFFICE r is also provided on the edges l9- thereof with oppositely disposed inwardly projecting integral prongs 24 for anchoring therebetween the container body to the said section as shown in Fig. 3.
What is claimed is:
1. In a. container, a body having a mouth provided with continuous lips extending throughout the length thereof, a slide fastener comprising a plurality of hollow longitudinally split telescopically associated sections, the splits of the said sections being of substantially uniform width, one of which sections is fixed to the body at one end of the mouth, the remainder of said sections being telescopically movable from a retracted position overlying the fixed section to an extended position encompassing the lips with the edges defined by the split portions thereof clamping the walls of the body together continuously throughout the length of the mouth adjacent the lips so as to close and seal the mouth.
2. In a container, a. body having a'fiexible linear mouth provided with continuous beaded edges extending throughout the length of the mouth, a sliding fastener for closing the mouth comprising a plurality of hollow longitudinally split telescopically slidable sections, each section being of uniform cross sectional size throughout its length.
with the splits thereof of substantially uniform width, one of which sections is fixed to the body in longitudinal alignment with the mouth thereof, said section having inwardly directed integral prongs embedded in the body for fixedly anchoring the section thereto, the remainder 'of said sections being telescopically slidable from a retracted position overlying the fixed section to an extended position encompassing the beaded edges with the edges defined by the split portions thereof clamping the walls of the body together continuously throughout the length of the mouth adjacent the beaded edge so as to close and seal a runlfomi width, means formed at the split edge 15 of one of the endmost sections for anchoring he same to the body in longitudinal alignment with 1 the mouth, the remainder of said sections being telescopically slidable from a retracted position overlying the anchored section to an extended 20 position encompassing the beaded edges with the edges defined by the split portions thereof clamping the walls of the body together continuously throughout the length of the mouth so as to close and seal the same, said slidable sections having :5 longitudinally extending slotted side portions and an outwardly projecting lug at the forward ends of each of the intermediate sections and at the forward end of the fixed, section engageable in the slotted portions for limiting the relative move- 0 ment of the sections in opposite directions and means on the outer ends of the endmost sections for manipulating the fastener.
