This invention relates. to improvements in fastening devices, and more particularly to slide closure fasteners.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a slide fastener for garment bags, pocket books, tobacco pouches and other articles'made of flexible material having an opening therein. We appreciate that various types of slide fasteners for articles of the above kind have been devised, but difliculty has been experienced in the operation of the same, due to jamming of the slide element. Our invention aims to eliminate the possibility of the slide element becoming jammed by reason of its free sliding movement at all times.
Another object of the invention resides in closure fastener devices constructed of a plurality of individual clips slidably mounted upon adjacent edges of the walls of an opening adapted to be closed, and which clips may be slid to various positions along the length of the opening to effectively close the same.
A further object is the provision of a closure fastening device in which the slide clips may be moved to a, closing position in even spaced relation upon a single operation on the part of an operator.
A further object is the provision of a slide 010- sure device by which the adjacent edges of an opening may be brought into interengagement with each other to efiectively close and seal the opening throughout its entire length.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a slide fastening device having the above features which is simple and inexpensive of manufacture, and easy to apply to various articles for use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings by reference characters and more particularly to Figures 1 to 8 25 inclusive, we have shown one form of our closure fastening device which includes a plurality of individual slide fasteners l0.
Each slide fastener. I0 is constructed of a single piece of resilient metal bent into substantial 30 U-shape to include a bight portion I I and spaced leg portions, the leg portions adjacent their free ends being bent inwardly toward each other to provide clamping jaws I3 and a restricted entrance to the clip, while the extreme ends of 35 the legs are bent outward in diverging relation as at l4 to provide an enlargedmouth at the extreme open end of the clip. The clips l0 forming the closure fastener are fixed at spaced distances along a flexible element l6 which may be in the form of a cord as shown in the drawings, or chain as shown in a modification to be explained hereinafter. The clips are 45 fastened to the flexible element l6 by bending the tongues l5 thereover to clamp the flexible element between the tongue and the adjacent side of the clip.
In- Figures 1 to 5 inclusive the preferred em- 0 bodiment of the invention is shown in use upon a moth-proof garment bag H, the side walls of which are constructed of fabric, heavy paper-or other like flexible material. One side wall of the bag body is slit the length thereof and the adjav55 cent edges of the slit are enlarged in thickness by hemming the material about flexible cords 18 to provide bead e'dges IS. The beaded edges l9 are folded upon themselves as at 20 and the folds inter-engaged as best seen in Figure 5.- These inter-engaged folded edges are stitched together at opposite ends at 2| to preform or pre-fold the unstitched portion of the slit which constitutes an opening 22 for facilitating access to the interior of the bag.

over one of the enclosed beaded edges so that the jaw portions l3 embrace the inter-engaging folds intermediate the two enclosed beaded edges as best seen in Figure 4 of the drawings. After all of the clips have been so connected to the foldededges the same are free to slide lengthwise and when the lowermost clip is pulled down to its limit, the other clips are simultaneously moved to their respective closure positions as seen in Figure 1. .By attaching the inner sides of the clips to the flexible element, the said element is concealed by the folded seam when the slide fasteners are in closed position. By grasping the tab 24 with the fingers of one hand, an operator may hold the walls of the .opening taut and then with the other hand slide the lowermost clip upwardly and in so doing, cause all of the other clips to be moved to the top of the opening as shown in Figure 2 whereupon the walls of the opening 22 may be spread apart to permit access to the interior of the bag. After once attaching the clips to the folded walls, there is no necessity to remove them as the beaded edges and folds act as tracks for slidably supporting said clips. When sliding the clips from their open position to closed position, they automatically cause the unfolded edges of the opening 22 to interengage and provide a closing folded seam along the length of the openmg In Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings the same construction of slide fastener device is shown as that shown in Figures 1 to 6 but in use upon a slightly different construction of bag. In this form, the edges of the opening in the bag 26 are hemmed about cords 21. At the top and bottom of the bag opening 28 the beaded edges formed by the enclosed cords are folded one inwardly and one outwardly as shown in Figure 8 and then brought into abutting engagement and secured by stitching 23. This preforms the folding forthe unstitched edges or those edges constituting the walls of the opening 28. The clips ill in this instance embrace both of the lapped beaded edges to slide lengthwise thereof. The operation of this form is the same as that of the preceding form.
In Figures 9 and 10 a slightly different construction of clip is shown at 30 and is identical to the clip ID with the exception that no provision is made for securing the same to a flexible element. In Figure 9, a plurality of .clips 30 are shown upon a bag 3| which may be of a construction similar to either the bag IT or 26. These edges 34 to 32, the walls of the mouth or opening 33 thereof 5 being provided with bead edges 34. The closure fastener device in this instance is constructed of a plurality of fastener clips 35 of substantially U-shape while the end of one of the legs of the clip is flared outwardly as at 36 and the end of the other leg is reduced in width and bent inwardly and thence outwardly and upon itself to provide a hook or fastening tongue 31 of a width less than the width of the leg. The clips 35 are fixedly secured at spaced intervals along the length of a flexible element 38 which in this instance consists of a chain. The chain passes through the hooks of the respective clips and the said hooks are pressed inwardly about the chain to grip the same.
The fastener clips are slipped over the bead embrace the same, causing one bead edge to be disposed above the other as shown in Figure 13. The inwardly bent portions of the hooks 31 provide restricted mouths to confine 25 the bead edges and draw the same together when the clips are spread out along the length of the mouth of the bag as seen in Figure 11. To open the bag or pouch, the clips are slid to one end of the bag opening to a position one against the 30 other with the connecting portions of the flexible element depending in looped formation as shown in Figure 12 whereupon the walls of the bag may be spread apart to gain access to the interior of the same. I 35 By reference to Figure 13, it will be seen that one of the beads is embraced by the bight and adjacent leg portions of each U-shape clip, whereas the other bead is embraced by the remaining leg portions thereof. This causes the 40 beads to be brought and held in engagement with each other when the clips are positioned at spaced distances along the length of the beads and prevents the accidental seeping out of coins, powder, tobacco, or other articles or substances which 45 may be carried in the bag.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that in all forms of the invention, the walls of the opening to be closed by the slide fasteners are formed with beaded edges which act as tracks for supporting and guiding the slide fasteners to open and closed positions. While we have shown several uses of the invention we do not wish to be limited thereto, as the fastening device may be used upon many other articles having openings which are now closed by various other types of fasteners and fastening devices.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:-
1. In an article having an opening therein, the walls of which may be spread apart, beads pro- ,vlded on the walls of said opening lengthwise thereof, the beaded walls of said opening at oppo-' site ends-being interfolded one within the other and the folds fixedly secure'd together at the extreme ends of the opening to provide a seam, and a fastening device including a plurality of separate individual closure elements slidably supported upon one of the folds of said seam when in open position and movable lengthwise of said opening to various spaced distances to cause the walls of the opening to be brought into interfolded relation to close said opening.
2- In an article having an opening therein, the

walls of which may be spread apart, beads provided on the walls of said opening lengthwise thereof, the beaded walls of said opening at opposite ends being interfolded one within the other and the folds fixedly secured together at the extreme ends of the opening to provide a seam, and a fastening device including a plurality of separate individual closure elements-slidably supported upon one of the folds of said seam when in open position and movable lengthwise of said opening to various spaced distances to cause the walls of the opening to be brought into interfolded relation to close said opening, and a finger tab at one end of said opening by which the walls of said opening may be drawn taut preparatory to the sliding movement of said closure elements to closed position.
3. In an article having an opening therein, the walls of which may be spread apart, beads provided on the walls of. said opening lengthwise thereof, the beaded walls of said opening at opposite ends being interfolded one within the other and the folds fixedly secured together at the extreme ends of the openings to provide a seam, and a fastening device including a plurality of separate individual closure elements slidably supported upon one of the folds of said seam when in open position and movable lengthwise of said opening to various spaced distances to cause the walls of the opening to be brought into interfolded relation to close said opening, and a flexible element secured to the article at one end of said opening and to which said closure elements are fixedly connected at spaced intervals therealong.
4. A closure device including a plurality of substantially U-shaped clips adapted to be slidably associated with the walls of an opening to be closed, each of said U-shaped clips having their leg portions brought into close proximity to each other adjacent the open end thereof to provide a restricted mouth portion, an eye on one of the legs of. each of said U-shaped clips, and a flexible element passing through the eyes of said clips and fixedly secured thereto'in spaced relation therealong. l
5. In an article having an opening therein, the walls of which may be spread apart, beads provided on the walls of said opening lengthwise thereof, a fastening device including a flexible element, a plurality of U-shaped clips each having the outer face of one of its legs fixedly secured to said flexible element at spaced distances therealong, said U-shaped clips fitting over the beads and embracing the same, whereby said flexible element will parallel said beads at one side thereof when said fastening device is closed with the clips spread along the length of said opening, and which permits of the clips being moved to open position to one end of said opening to a compact position one against the other with the portions of said flexible element which connects said clips depending in looped formation.
6. In an article having an opening therein, the walls of which may be spread apart, beads provided on the walls of said opening lengthwise thereof, a fastening device including a flexible element of a length approximating the length of said opening, a plurality of U-shaped clips slidably engaging said beads, and means on the outer face of one of the legs of each of said U-shaped clips fixedly -attaching the flexible element thereto, whereby said flexible element will parallel said beads at one side thereof when said fastening device is closed with the clips spread along the length of said opening, and which permits of the clips being moved to open position to one end of said opening to a compact position one against the other with the portions of said flexible element which connects said clips depending in loop formation.
'7. A slide closure device comprising an elongated flexible element, a plurality of U-shaped clips, one of the side legs of each of. said clips being provided with an eye of a width less than the width of the legs, said flexible element passing through the eyes of the respective clips and fixedly secured thereto.
8. In an article having an opening therein, a pair of flexible parallel beads respectively provided along opposite longitudinal edges of said bight and adjacent leg portions of each U-shaped member embracingly contacting one of the beads, and the remaining leg portions of each of the members embracingly contacting opposite sides of the other bead, said U-shape member being positioned along the length of said beads at spaced distances therealong to hold the beads in engagement with each other to close said opening, and a flexible element of a length approximating the length of said opening, the legs of said U-shaped members disposed on one side of said opening being attached to said flexible element at spaced distances therealong to limit the distance between said U-shaped members when in spaced position along said beads LOUIS WIESENFELD.
