3 Claims.
This invention relates to attachments for windows or doors and more particularly to screens or the like and to means for the attachment thereof in position of use.
Mosquito screens for windows as hitherto used are provided with wooden or other rigid frames which generally are made to removably fit in the guide grooves of the window sash or to be otherwise fixed to the window-frames. Such construction has many disadvantages. First, the attachment and detachment of the screens are more or less difficult or tedious Work and generally require skilled help. Another drawback is that when half screens are used and they engage the groove of the window sash, the latter cannot be closed except on the removal of the screen.
If the screen is of the extendible type, in which case it is steadied in position by the window sash resting thereon, there is the disadvantage that on lifting the sash the screen is liable to fall out.
A further disadvantage is that such screens of the hitherto used construction, having rigid frames, cannot be conveniently stored and shipped and that they are liable to be damaged easily.
The main object of my invention is to obviate said disadvantages. This I accomplish by providing a construction which consists of supports adapted to be permanently fixed to the window frame on the inside of the Window, and of a screen which can be quickly and easily attached to and detached from said supports and which, when in position of use, will not interfere with the movement of the window sash. The screen per se is preferably made with flexible borders at least along two opposite edges so that the screen may be conveniently rolled up either for storing or shipping purposes.
My invention also consists in certain details of construction whereby the manufacture will be greatly simplified and the cost of production minimized.
To make my invention more clear the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar characters denote corresponding parts and in which,

Referring now to the drawing more in detail,
a denotes the frame of a window and b one of the vertically slidable sashes thereof. Adapted to be permanently fixed on the inside of the 20. window to the sides of said frame a to extend vertically are a pair of rigid members I!) which in the present embodiment of my invention are made in form of angle bars (Figs. 1, 2 and 4). These bars may be fixed to the window frame 26 by screws II as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or by headed pins fixed in the, frame and adapted to slidably engage keyhole shaped slots I2 (Fig. 5) provided in said bars. Each bar carries a longitudinal row of suitable fasteners, such as press 30 buttons I3 and additionally at each end a headed pin I3a or the like. Adapted to removably engage said pins I3a are a pair of cross members I4 carrying rows of fasteners I3 same as those of members I0 and which too may be in form of 35 angle bars. These cross bars are each formed at their ends with recesses or notches Ila to slip over said pins I3a and be securely held in position thereon as shown in Fig. 4.
The screen I5 according to the present embodiment of my invention, which may be a wire netting of a substantially rectangular shape, is provided around its four edges with flexible borders I6. These borders I6 may be made of cloth or the like and secured to the wire netting 45 by sewing or otherwise. Provided on said borders are longitudinal rows of fasteners I1 which are the counterpart of the fasteners I3, 1. e. the female or male members of press buttons when using this type of fastener. Said fasteners 50 are distributed on the borders I6 so as to be in range with the fasteners I3 on the side members I0 and cross members 14 so as to enable the quick and convenient attachment and detachment of said screen. The side members III and cross 55 members M are so positioned relative to the may be especially required when the sash has an, -projecting handle or grip, in which case thespace between the sash and. the cross bar will have to be larger than a mesh in the screen.
In accordance with the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 the bars and 14 are made of standard size to fit a particular size of window and the screen, by reason of its flexible borders around its four edges can be rolled up from any of its edges to be convenient for storing or pping.
The cross members and side members, instead of being of standard size may be made extendible in length to fit various sizes of windows. Said members may, to this end, be each composed of two longitudinally recessed sections adjustably joined to one another by pins 20, each section being provided with a series of fasteners l3 similar to those on cross bar If! for the attachment of the screen.
Instead of recessed sections extension pieces 2! may be used so that while using a member of standard size the latter, when found too short for a particular window, may be lengthened by the addition of said extension piece 2|. Such extension pieces may also be made in different standard sizes. To facilitate the attachment of said extension piece the latter, which may also be in form of an angle bar, may have at one end longitudinal recesses 21a, one in each side thereof, to removably engage headed pins 22 provided on the sides of the corresponding end of the member 23 as shown in Figs. 7 and 8.
In the modification shown in Figs. 9 and 10 the upper and lower edges of the flexible borders of the screen a are formed to pockets 24 to receive reinforcing ribs 25. These ribs will eliminate the necessity of using the cross bars heretofore described, while permitting the screen to be rolled up from the sides when not in use. The provision of permanently fixed lateral supports ID on the window frame with rows of 6 fasteners l3 thereon makes it possible to utilize said supports for the interchangeable attachment of ventilator screens and wire screens. Thus, for instance, ventilators in form of longitudinally recessed plates 28 with air deflectors 10 25a may be provided at their lateral edges with rows of fasteners 29 similar to the fasteners I! to be counterparts of the fasteners I 3, so that when desired the screen l5 may be removed and replaced by the ventilator 28. 15
It is clear that various changes may be made in the construction of my invention without departing from the principle thereof. I therefore do not wish to restrict myself to the details described and shown.
What I claim is:
1. In an attachment longitudinally extendible means for supporting a ventilating or similar device arranged on the inside of a window and secured to the window frame and means for removably fastening said device to said supporting means, said supporting means being longitudinally extendible to fit different sizes of windows.
2. In an attachment for windows, the combination of lateral vertical members of rigid 30 material adapted to be fixed to the sides of the window frame on the inside of the window and each having a plurality of fasteners and a ventilating device having a plurality of corresponding fasteners at each of its lateral edges adapted to cooperate with said first named fasteners for the removable attachment of said device to said vertical members.
3. In an attachment for windows, the combination of lateral vertical members of rigid ma- 4d terial adapted to be fixed to the window frame on the inside of the window, upper and lower cross members of rigid material removably engaging said vertical members, said vertical members and cross members each having a plurality of fasteners thereon and a screen having at each edge a plurality of fasteners adapted to cooperate with said first named fasteners for the attachment of said screen to said vertical and cross 0 5 ELIAS KAPLAN.
