2 Claims.
lljhisinvention relates to an undergarment for womensfwear. and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an undergarment having elastic means extending upward:
1y from its sides andthroughout the up er end of its back providing. when the garment is worn for exerting an equal pull at all points at the 1 top of the garment resulting in snug yielding engagement throughout the shoulders, under the arms and back of the wearer and preventing the busts of the wearer from projecting from the-garrnent under thear'ma; i
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an'undergarment for womens wear having means whereby a practical low back portion is had, as well as a back portion which will snugly engage a hollow back of a wearer.- j
- Afurther 'object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an undergarment having means common to the bust and back portions thereof to cause the snug fitting of such portions when the garment is worm A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, anundergarment having yieldable means common to its back portion and sides of its bust portion to continuously cause a snug fitting of such portions when the garment is worn without discomflture to the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an undergarment having a continuous yieldable means to insure, when the garment is worn, a continuous snug flt with respect to the shoulders, under the arms and back of thewearer without discomfiture.
A further object of the-invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an undergarment having a practical low back for snugly and yieldingly fitting the back of the wearer, especially when the back of the wearer is hollow.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an undergarment for the purpose referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable andthoroughly efllcient for the purpose intended thereby.
It is to be understood that the term "undergarment" used herein is intended to be a generic term embracing the application of the invention to the use of the garment in the form of merely a brassiere or in the form of a bathing suit, the principal or feature of snug yielding fit and supshowing the position thereof-with respect to a 5 wearer,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the garment showing the adaptation thereof with respect to a wearer,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view, in rear elevation 10 of the garments, l i
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view, in side elevationof the'garment,
Figure 5 is a section on line 5:5, Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a sectional detail showing the elas- 15 tic element prior to anchoring of the ends, only one of its ends being shown. I
The garment generally indicated at I includes a bust portion 8, a front portion 9 to the upper end of which is securedto bust portion 8, a pair of 20 side portions I0, Hand a back portion l2. The garment 1 is shown as. being positioned upon the simulation of awearer indicated as l2. 7
The garment further includes a continuous elastic element or member l3 of. strap-like form 5 having a substantially. semi-oval shaped central stretch I4, a pair of oppositely disposed upstanding incurved outer stretches l5, l6 of substantially'convexo-concave contour, and a pair of oppositely disposed depending outcurved inner 3o stretches l1, l8 of substantially ccncavo-convex contour. The ends of the stretch ll merge into the lower ends of the stretches l5, IS. The upper ends of the stretches l1, l8 merge into the upper ends of the stretches IS, IS respectively. The 35 lower end terminal portions i9, 20 of the stretches I1, I 8 respectively are positioned against the inner face ,of stretch il in proximity to the points of mergence of the latter with the lower ends of the stretches l5, l6. The stretches l5, I! are op- 40 positely disposed with respect to each other. The stretches l6, l8 are oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The lower end terminal portions IQ of the stretches l1, l8 are anchored to the inner face of stretch H. The stretches l5, I6 45 I of the top of the side portions I0, I I and is secured tooppose the top edge of back portion I2 and the top edge of the rear part of the side portions I0, I I by a row of stitching 24. The stretches I5, I6 at their front edges are secured by any suitable means to the sides of the bust portion 8. The stretches I5, I6 extend above the bust portion 8. The stretches Il, I8 extend above the bust portion 8 and are free of connection to the garment other than their connection to the stretch I4. t
The stretch I4 is for the purpose of causing the top of back portion I2 to yieldingly and snugly engage the back of the wearer and to enable the garment to be provided with a practical low back. The stretches I5, l6 are for the purpose of causing the sides of the bust portion 8 to yieldingly and snugly engage under the arms of the wearer and to prevent the busts from extending out under the arms. The portions 25, 26 of the stretches I5, I! respectively coact to provide a yieldingly snugly fitting suspension for mounting on a shoulder of the wearer. The portions 21, 28 of the stretches I8, I8 respectively coact to provide a yieldingly snugly fitting suspension for mounting on the other shoulder of the wearer.
The element or member l3 will be of a length to p ovide for its use in connecting various waistli r ie and shoulder lengths and is positioned for use in the desired relation with respect to the length of a waistline, the width of aback and length of the shoulders, and after so positioned, each end terminal portion thereof will appear as in Figure 6 as extended below stretch I4, as at 28. The stretches I1, I8 are then cut away and the edges provided by the cut-offs made flush with the bottom edge of stretch I4 as shown in Figure 4. The stretches I'I, I8 are then anchored to the stretch H by the rows of stitching 30. The portions of the element I3 bordering its end edges are concealed by rectangular members 3|. The members 3| are of a length greater than the width of the element I3 and have finished lengthwise edges as is shown in Figure 5. The members 3I are secured to the stretches I4, I1, I8 of the element I3 by the rows of stitching 32 and to stretch l4 of element I3 by rows oi stitching 88 positioned adjacent to the side edges of stretches Il, I8. The element I3, relative to the bust, front. sides and back portions of the garment will then be of the arrangement shown in Figure 3. 5
What I claim is:
1. An undergarment including bust, front, sides and back portions, and a continuous elastic member of a strap-like form having an intermediate stretch secured to and throughout the top of said 10 back portion and to the rear parts of the tops of said side portions, said member having a pair of upwardly extending outer stretches secured to and throughout the sides of said bust portion, and said member having a pair of inner stretches depending from said outer stretches and having their lower ends anchored to the intermediate stretch at spaced points of the latter, the said several stretches coactingto form a 'pair of upstanding spaced closed loops for connecting the garment to and for suspending it from the shoulders of the wearer. g
