MINE DOOR OPERATOR Filed March 26, 1954 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 Inventor JaneJMTJbai e flzmaariu Patented Oct. 1, 1935 UNHTED STATES PA'iEid'i OFFIQE 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in mine doors, and more particularly to a novel operating mechanism therefor.
The principal object of the present invention 5 is to provide an automatic operating mechanism for mine doors wherein the mine cars in approaching the door operate track mechanism for actuating the doors without manual assistance.
Another important object of the present inven- 10 tion is to provide a simple mechanism for automatically operating mine doors which, because of its simple construction, can be manufactured and installed at low cost.
Other important objects and advantages of 15 the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a horizontal sectional view through the door and adjacent posts, looking at 20 the actuating means in plan.
Figure 2 represents a side elevational view of the mechanism.
Figure 3 represents a transverse sectional view taken substantially on line 33 of Figure 1.
25 Figure 4 represents a fragmentary detailed sectional view through one of the track lever supports.
Figure 5 represents a sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
30 Figure 6 represents a fragmentary detailed sectional view through one of the track lever supports.
Figure 7 represents a sectional view taken substantially on line l-i of Figure l.
35 Figure 8 represents a sectional View taken substantially on line 88 of Figure 2.
Figure 9 rep-resents a sectional view taken substantially on line 99 of Figure 1.
Figure It represents a cross sectional view =l through one of the track rails and associated track levers, showing a car wheel engaging the same.
Figure 11 represents a perspective view fragmentarily showing one of the track levers.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numer- 45 als designate like parts, it can be seen that numerals -5 represent the rails of a mine track, while numeral 3 represents a partition having an opening within which is mounted the swingable mine door 9, the same being mounted on hinges 50 I0. One side of the door 9 is provided with a bumper II, and to this side of the door 9 is attached an end of each of the two cables l2i3, the cable l2 extending to the door operating mechanism, generally referred to by numeral [4 55 at one side of the door, while the cable I 3 extends to the door operating mechanism, generally referred to by numeral I5 at the opposite side of the door. These cables are disposed over pulleys it supported by posts i'i. As each of the operating mechanisms i il5 are identical in con- 5 struction, a description of one will sujice for both. The operating mechanism consists of an elongated lever Iii of T-shape in cross section, the same being pivotally connected, as at is, to the boss 2@ rising upwardly from a plate M which has an extension 22 for disposition under the adjacent rail 5. The extension 2.2 is provided with one or more reduced and threaded boltlike extensions 23 equipped with nuts it for forcing a lug 25 over the base of the rail 5, thus securing the base plate 2! in position. The base plate 2! is furthermore supplemented by legs or rests 25 for supporting the plate stably on the bottom of the pit 21.
Additional base plates 28-28 are provided and secured to the base of the adjacent rail 5 in the same manner as shown in Figure 8 and these bases 28 are likewise provided with legs 29.
The elongated lever I8 is provided with depending arcuate-shaped arms 30 which extend downwardly through openings 3i in the bases 28. An anchor member 32 for each of the bases 28 serves to secure the lower end of an inverted conical coiled spring 33 to the bottom of the pit 2?, while the upper end of this spring engages the lower end of the corresponding lever arm 39.
In each of the bases 28 roller bearings 34 are mounted for anti-frictional engagement with the corresponding arm 30.
In each of the operating mechanisms l4-|5, 35 a large pulley wheel Si is employed which has one end of the corresponding cable R2 or I3 secured thereto. This pulley 3? is mounted on a shaft 38 supported by a standard 39. The shaft 53 is also provided with a pinion do which meshes 40 with a gear wheel 4 I, this gear wheel being keyed to a shaft 42.
A lever 43 on one end of the shaft 42 is pivotally connected, as at M, to the arm 45 depending from the corresponding track lever I8. 45
Now assuming that a mine car is traveling toward the left in Figure 2, the wheels of the car will ride onto the lever 68 and cause the same to move downwardly and swing the corresponding lever 43. mits motion to the pulley 31 by way of the gears 41-40. Thus the cable I2 is pulled and throws the door 9 to an open position.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood 55 This rotates the shaft 42 and transthat numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
In combination, a mine door, a track lever, connecting means between the said track lever and mine door, a base upon which the lever is pivotally supported, a guide for the free end portion of the lever, said guide consisting of a stand having an opening in the top thereof, a depending arcuate shaped arm adjacent the free end portion of the lever, said arm being disposed downwardly through the opening in the stand, and a spring in the stand for engaging the lower end of the arm for normally maintaining the adjacent end of the lever forced upwardly, a shaft provided with a lateral arm, a link connection between the lever and the arm, a gear on the shaft, a pulley wheel, a gear carried by the pulley Wheel and meshing with the first mentioned gear,
and a belt trained on the pulley wheel and con- 10 nected with said mine door.
