- As used herein, the term “hair extension” means a manufactured covering of natural or synthetic hair for the head. The hair extension is either woven to a user's natural hair for long term use or detachable for short term use. Typically, a hair extension includes one or more wefts, “weft” meaning a collection of multiple “hairs” (strands of natural or synthetic hair) that are attached together by stitch work with a sewing machine or fused together by glue and woven material. Each weft is treated as a unit in the manufacture of the hair extension. A “weaving band” is a strip of material to which wefts of hair are attached. The weaving band is used to attach the hair extension to the user's own hair.

In order to storehair extension 190 inpackage assembly 100,hair extension 190 is first wrapped aroundcenter portion 152 ofretainer portion 151 so that approximately half of the correspondinghairs 194 are disposed on each side ofcenter portion 152. When wrappinghair extension 190 aboutretainer portion 151, weavingband 192 is preferably retained adjacent the top ends 154 ofpanels 153 by the pairs ofopposed slots 156. As well, weavingband 192 is wrapped aroundpanels 153 so that it is disposed between the pairs ofapertures elastic bands 196 that are passed throughapertures FIG. 10A . Note, when wrappinghair extension 190 aboutretainer portion 151,hairs 194 are positioned so that the curled portion extends outwardly from thecorresponding panel 153. -
Hairs 194 are maintained in the desired alignment by folding the corresponding pairs offlaps 160 inwardly toward theircorresponding panel 153 and securing them in place, such as by tape. Next, as best seen inFIG. 10C , bottom ends 164 ofpanels 153 are curved to match the curl of thehairs 194, and aninsert 170 is positioned adjacent eachpanel 153 so that the curled portions ofhairs 194 are disposed between the curved bottom ends 164 ofpanels 153 and curvedbottom panels 174 ofinserts 170, as best seen inFIG. 11 . An elongated, rectangularouter panel 182 is formed into a U-shape about bothretainer portion 151 and inserts 170 to facilitate placingretainer assembly 150 in thecorresponding box portion 110. As best seen inFIG. 2 ,retainer assembly 150 is slid intobox portion 110 so that top ends 154 ofpanels 153 are slidably received inslot 124 oftop wall 114. As such, retainer assembly 150 is held in the desired position withinbox portion 110. Note, as best seen inFIG. 2 , the size of the curl to be maintained in the hairs ofhair extension 190 is directly related to the overall width of the package assembly'sbox portion 110. Thepresent insert 170 can be replaced with other embodiments, such as a roller having the same curve as that of the desired curl of thehairs 194. - Referring now to
FIG. 12 , aform 249 for a retainer portion of an alternate embodiment of a package assembly is shown. Theform 249 of the retainer portion differs primarily from the previously discussed embodiment in that multiple sets ofopposed slots top end 154 of eachpanel 153. As such, multiple hair extensions of varying lengths may be stored in the corresponding package assembly, each hair extension having the same size curl in its hairs. As shown, three (3) hair extensions may be disposed on the retainer portion, with other embodiments holding up to five (5) hair extensions. Additionally, eachflap 160 is attached to the corresponding panel 253 by a pair of fold lines 161. Utilizing twofold lines 161 for eachflap 160 allows theflaps 160 to be spaced further from the corresponding panel 253, as would be desirable when multiple hair extensions are being stored in the package assembly. - Referring now to
FIGS. 13 and 14 , aretainer assembly 350 of an alternate embodiment of a package assembly in accordance with the present invention is shown.Retainer assembly 350 includes acenter panel 353, aretainer portion 351, and a pair ofrollers 370. As shown, retainer portion 351 is substantially similar to the previously described retainer portion 151 (FIG. 3 ) of the first embodiment.Retainer portion 351 preferably includes a pair ofpanels 153. Eachpanel 153 includes abottom end 164 that may be curved as desired for maintaining a unidirectional curl inhairs 194 of thecorresponding hair extension 190. Specifically, for a tight curl, each bottom end may be given a curve having a small radius of curvature in coordination with the overall width of the corresponding box portion 110 (FIG. 7 ) of the package assembly. For a wider curl, a correspondinglywider box portion 110 is utilized, thereby allowing the curved portion of eachbottom end 164 ofcenter panels 153 to have a greater radius of curvature. The curved bottom ends 164 ofpanels 153 are used in combination withrollers 370 to maintain the desired unidirectional curl, as discussed below.Rollers 370 can be made with formed material, cardboard, paper mache, polyethylene, polyurethane, polystyrene, polybutadiene or formed plastic. - Additionally, a pair of
opposed flaps 160 extends outwardly from corresponding side edges 157 of eachpanel 153. Eachflap 160 is foldable inwardly toward thecorresponding panel 153 so thathairs 194 of thecorresponding hair extension 190 may be maintained in alignment against thecenter panels 153. Note, the present embodiment ofretainer assembly 350 differs from the first embodiment in thathairs 194 ofhair extension 190 are secured betweenflaps 160 and the inner surface of thecorresponding panel 153 rather than its outer surface. This is in keeping with the fact that the bottom ends of the hairs are curled inwardly rather than outwardly relative tocenter panel 353. As such, the pairs ofopposed flaps 160 help prevent the tangling ofhairs 194 during shipment and storage of the hair extension. - As noted above,
retainer assembly 350 includesplanar center panel 353. Atop end 355 ofcenter panel 353 includes a pair ofopposed slots 357, each slot depending inwardly toward a longitudinal center axis ofcenter panel 353 from a side edge thereof. The pair ofslots 357 is configured to removably receive aweaving band 192 ofhair extension 190 that is to be stored thereon, as discussed in greater detail below. Additionally, two pairs of apertures (not shown) are preferably formed in thetop end 355 of eachcenter panel 353. The apertures are configured to receive elastic bands (not shown), or wire bands, therethrough, thereby retainingweaving band 192 ofhair extension 190 inslots 357. -
Retainer assembly 350 also differs from the previously discussed first embodiment (FIG. 11 ) in that inserts 170 are not used but, rather, rollers 370 are utilized to maintain the described unidirectional curl in the ends ofhairs 194. As shown, the ends of thehairs 194 are wrapped inwardly around aroller 370 of the desired diameter, which in turn is received inside the curvedbottom end 164 of acorresponding panel 153. Anouter panel 182, similar to that shown inFIG. 11 , is wrapped aroundretainer portion 351 androllers 370 prior to sliding theretainer assembly 350 inside a corresponding box portion 110 (FIG. 7 ) of the package assembly, as discussed above.
