DEVICE UTILIZED IN CONJUNCTION WITH SHEET PRIIIIJ'I'INCI PRESSES FOR I SPRAYING THE PRINTED SHEETS WITH L IQUID PARAFFIN OR THE LIKE Filed March 1, 1933 4 She e ts-Sheet 4 /n vento/n' ur! Berg rzer by Patented Oct. 1, 1935 I UNITED- STATES DEVICE PATENT OFFICE 1N CONJUNCTION WITH UTILIZED SHEET PRINTING PBESSES FOR SPRAY- ING THE PRINTED SHEETS WITH LIQUID PABAFFIN OR THE LIKE Ajplication March 1,
1933, Serial No.-659,084 March 8, 1932 1; Claims. (c1. 1o1 42z) It has already been proposed toprovide devices which, by spraying the freshly printed sheets with liquid and subsequently solidifying parailln,
wax or the like, prevent smearing of the sheets I on delivery.
The known spraying devices are either rigidly connected to the frame, or they are secured on the outside of the delivery table in such a mannot that a spraying pistol is reciprocated crosswiseto the direction in which the sheets fly.
- Inthesprayingdevlceswhicharerigidlysecured to the frame the sheets are sprayed while onthe flybands of the press, that is to say on their way to thedelivery table. .Ihereby-the l whole of the fly for the sheets and other parts of the press are covered with spraying ce, which, in time, forms a hard crust. Partsof thiscrustm scraped off by the'sheets that follow on .and get into the pile of. printed 50 sheets. Other particles ofthe solidified crust break (if from the continuously running bands and fall on the last delivered sheet. when the second side of the sheet is printed, such parts ofthecrustareforcedinto thetypeset andcause 18 time wasting hold ups and useless printing.
whereasprayingpistol is'disposedonthe outer side of the delivery table and reciprccates crosswise tothc direction in which the sheets fly, the cloud of substance is blown 80 intothepresswhichalsogivesrise tothe troubles above referred to. In addition} the room re' quired for the assistant working at the-delivery table is unduly restricted, so that the checking of the-printing which is continually carried out 5 during delivery, the adjustment of the pile andrails later the removal of the pile is made very diilicult.
Especially the removal of the pile can only be effected with great difliculty and with utmost caution, due to the spraying device being disposed mattheedgeofthedeliverytable.
These defects may be removed by means of the improvements described in the following: A'
spraying device whichjs particularly suited for the present purpose is disclosed in my Patent No- In principle, the invention consists inthis that the spraying device is disposed over the delivery table in such a manner as to reciprocate in the direction in which the sheets fly. For this pur- 50 pose in two revolution machines the spraying device may be disposed on the reciprocating delivery trolley over the sheet carrying surface thereof. In stop cylinder machines the spraying device may be on the delivery table so lflbl'e procateinthedii'eefloninwhichthe sheets fly, and it may be reciprocated by a rod system driven for example by the fly rod or by the single revolution shaft. I
In the accompanying drawings one form of the invention is shown by way of example. 6
Fig. 1 shows the delivery trolley in-the position which it occupies shortly before the delivery of the sheet. V
Fig. 2 shows the position of the delivery trolley wherein the sheet is delivered from the trolley to m thedeliverytableandissprayedduringthis operation. Figs. 3,4, 5 undo show twoforms of construction by way of example of the arrangement of the spraying members for a stop cylinder press. is Fig. 3 shows the delivery mechanism of the press in the position occupied shortly before the delivery of the sheet. -"I'he spraying device is drivenbytheflyrod. in a position, wherein the printed sheet is delivered on the delivery table and the delivery mechanism performs its return movement, the
spraying members spraying the delivered printing sheet. Figure 4* illustrates a detail of the actuating lever for the spraying device. An im-;
proved actuating mechanism is disclosed in my aforementioned patent.
5 and 6 illustrate the drive of the spraying device being taken'ofl in a stop cylinder ma 3 chine from the single revolution shaft, in two different positions.
' Figs. 7, 8, 9 show a form of construction, wherein thespraying-deyice is mounted on separate f ,5 Fig.7 shows .a'spraying device movable for: ward on-two separate-rails, in" the position of "rest, the spraying device being interconnected with a .trolley carrying the fly sticks and running on two-rails disposed below the upper rails. 1 p 7 Figs. 8 and 9 shows details of the'devicesillustrated in Fig.- '7, andespecially the construction of the trolleys and their rails. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2', in two revolution resses the spraying device is carried by side plates l which are fixed to racks 2 of the delivery trolley witl'fiscrews 3.
Mounted at the upper part of the side plates I there is a spray pipe 5 provided withv spraying members I, the said spray pipe being provided 4 on the outside with melting pots i for the spraya 'ing substance. Disposed in end pieces 1 there are control shafts l for actuating the spraying members l, andsecured fast to such control shafts there are levers] provided with rollers I... The If cams II are adjustably mounted on side plates I4 of the two revolution press. The cams II are adjusted by meansof screws I2 which extend through slots I3 made in the cams. The cams II are provided with sloping running up and running off surfaces for the rollers I0. The flier trolley to move backwards whereby the printed sheet I6 is delivered on the pile I1 on the delivery table I8. v
During this backward movement of the delivery trolley the whole spraying device 5 which is rigidly secured to the delivery trolley by means of side plates I, is moved therewith. By running up on the cams II (Fig. 2), the rollers I0 effect rocking of lever 9 and control shaft 8, whereby the spraying members mounted on the spraying pipe 5 are opened, so that the sheet running off the flier roller 20 is sprayed. The spraying substance is fed from the melting pots 6 to the spraying pipe 5 and is indicated at 30.
In stop cylinder presses (Figs. 3 and 4) the spraying device is mounted in side bearings 2|, which by means of a slide piece 22 are movably mounted inguide rails 23. The guide rails 23 are mounted on the delivery table I8 parallel to the direction in which the sheets fly. In the upper part of the side bearings 2| is mounted the spraying pipe 5, which is provided with spraying members 4, the pipe being connected outside with melting pots 6. For setting the spraying members 4 into operation control shafts 8 are mounted in end pieces 1, and mounted on the shafts 8 there are levers 9 having rollers I0. The cams II are adjustably mounted on the guide rails 23 by means of screws I2, which reach .through slots I3 made in the cams II. Secured to the fly rod 25 there are levers 24 which are hinged to rods 26 hingedly connected to glide pieces 22. The well known fly sticks 21 carry the printed sheet I6 (Fig. 3). The pile I1 is on the delivery table I8. The fly rod 25 is rockably mounted in eyes 28 of the frame side plates 29, a
The operation is as follows: The printed sheet is taken off the printing cylinder by means of the fly sticks 21 secured to the fly rod 25 and are placed on the pile I1 'on the delivery table I8.
During this operation the spraying device 5 is moved forward under the action of lever 24, rods 26 and gliding pieces 22 towards the edge I88 of the delivery table, whereby the fly sticks are given free access to the delivery table I8 for delivering the printed sheet I6 thereon. Following the forward movement the fly rod is reversed and thereby the whole spraying device is moved backwards. Duringthis movement towards the rear of the spraying device the rollers I0, by mounting the cams II, effect the rocking of lever 9 and the control lever 8, whereby thespraying members 4 mounted on the spraying pipe 5 are opened, so that the spraying of the printed sheet I6 delivered on the pile I1 by the fly' sticks 21 (Fig, 4) is performed, and this is done at the moment when the sheet is already lying on the pile I1, or in Fig. 2, is about to be laid on the pile 11. The spray is directed towards the outer edge I of the pile I1. Movable parts of the press are therefore not sprayed at all.
The lever 9 may be constructed as illustrated in Fig, 4 It consists of a main lever Ii fixedly attached to shaft 8. An auxiliary lever 9 is pivotally connected to the free end of lever 9 The former has at its rear end an extension 9 which engages a boss 9 on the main lever 9 so that, the auxiliary lever is free to swing independent of the main lever in one direction. The lever 9 1 carries at its free end a roller 9' which is adapted to engage cam II, while a spring 9 tends to maintain the extension 9 against the boss 9 When the spraying device moves to the left the lever 9 is revolved in a counterclockwise direction to open the spraying nozzles, whil in the other direction the link of the two levers is broken, as indicated in dotted lines and the spraying nozzles remain closed.
In Figs. 5 and 6 a form of construction is shown,
. wherein the drive of the spraying device in stop cylinder presses is taken off the single revolution shaft. This enables the spraying device to be so controlled that during the printing operation it reciprocates at half the speed of. the fly only, so 2 that the control members of the spraying device are not strained so much, the additional strain of the fly drive, which in many cases cannot be imposed at all, is avoided,
A single revolution shaft I02 is mounted in the 3 usual manner in the frame IOI and carries a gear I03 which engages a gear I04. The gear I04 and a crank I05 are mounted fast on a pivot I06. A link I01 is hinged to the crank I05 and a rocking lever I I2. A rocking shaft II3, disposed beneath the path of the fly sticks 21 and carrying the rocking lever H2 and on both sides arms I24, is rotatably mounted in flange bearings II5 secured to the frame side plates 29 by means of screws. The arms I24 are pivotally connected to connecting rods 26 which are hinged to gliding pieces 22. Such gliding pieces 22 are slidably mounted in guide rails 23, which are secured to the delivery table I8 parallel to the direction in which the sheets fly. The fly sticks 21 are secured 4; to the fly rod 25 which is rotatably mounted in the frame side plates 29. A side bearing 2I secured to the sliding pieces 22 carries the spraying device 5.
The operation is as follows: The rotary move- 51 ment of the crank I05 caused by the continuous rotation of the single revolution shaft I02 and the gears I03 and I04 effects the rising and sinking of link I 01, whereby the shaft 3 is rocked to and fro once by means of the lever II2 during 5: one cycle, that is to say during one revolution of the single revolution shaft I02. This motion is transmitted by means of the arms I24 and the connecting rods 26 to the gliding pieces 22, which are sliding in their guide rails to and fro in the horizontal direction, the side bearings 2| which carry the spraying device 5 being moved to and "fro by positive action.
\The movement of the fly rod 25 with the fly sticks 21 is effected in such a manner that a cam 05 is disposed in a well known manner, which, by
1 means of a rocking lever effects the rotation and the stoppage of the fly sticks.
Figure 5 illustrates one mode for accomplishing the desired results. Attached to the shaft I02 7C is an eccentric I03 having a connecting rod I03 which in turn is coupled to a shaft I03 by means of a crank I03 Upon rotation of the shaft I 02 the shaft I03 is thus caused to oscillate preferably through an angle of about 90 while the shaft 75 attached to the shaft 25'- of the fly rod. Hence the fly rod is oscillated through the required angle of approximately 180 while shaft I52 makes one revolution. Y I
During the standstill of the fly rod 25* the spraying device is already moved by means of the crank drive described above from the position shown in Fig. 5 forward, that is to say towards the outer edge I88 of the delivery table |8.. When the spraying device moves over half of its stroke the rotary movement of the fly rod 25? moves with double the speed of the spraying device, so that the forward dead centre of the spraying device 5 and of the fly sticks 21 is reached at the same time. The return movement of both devices commences simultaneously (Fig.') so that the fly sticks 21 have nearly reached their rearward dead centre when the spraying device sprayed half of the delivered sheet I5. During the further considerable weight and return movement of the spraying device 5 thev fly sticks are substantially at a standstill. The spraying is started when during the return movement of the spraying device 5 the roller lever 9, l5 controlling the valves of the spraying device 5 runs over the cam The spraying device 5 may besometimes of it is preferable to run it on separate rails. A form of construction em-- bodying this feature is shown in Figs. I, 8 and 9.
There are provided running rails 4| securely attached to the frame 42 of the press on both sides of the delivery table l5 in the direction in which the sheets fly. Secured to botnends of the rail 4| there are latches 43 extending vertically upwards and flxed by means of screws 44. Fixed to the upper extremities of the latches 43 by means of'screws 45 there are rails'45, so that an upper track 45 and a lower track 4| is provided. Secured to the rails 45 there are cams 41 which are made with slots 45 wherethrough pass bolts 49 whichmay be screwed into the rail 45 so that -the teams 41 are adjustable. Theends of the spraying device 5 are mounted on two trolleys 50 carrying rollers 5| which may travel along the upper rail 45. Extending laterally from the trolleys 50there is a control lever 9 with control rollers III for the spraying device 5. Extending vertically downwards from the trolleys 50 there are rods 52 having a slot 53. A pivot 54 engages in slot 53, the said pivot being secured to'a trolley 55 running on the lower rail 4|.
The trolleys 55 carry rollers 55 which run on the lower rails 4|. Mounted on the trolleys 55 there are pull rods 58 rotatable round pivots 51,
the said rods being hingedto arms 24 secured to the rocking lever 25 mounted in the frame side plates 42.
Mounted in the trolleys 55 (Fig. 7) is the fly rod 50 to which are secured the fly sticks 21. Mounted in the side frames 42 there is a rocking shaft 52 provided with take o'fl members 5| and a fly roller shaft 54 provided with fly rollers 53.
The operation is as follows: The rocking shaft 25 is rocked to and fro in a well known manner, whereby a horizontal reciprocating movement of the trolleys 55 running on the rails 4| is obtained by means of the arms 24 and the'rods 58. The fly sticks 21 mounted on the trolleys 55 are thereby also reciprocated. In their rear dead centre position they receive the printed sheet in a well known manner from the fly bands l5 and during their printed surfaces ing a delivery table,
- ing them in succession on which are secured to the flyrod 55' r forward movement carry same over the pile ii ward movement of the trolley 55, it is taken off from the fly sticks 21 and is placed on the pile l1,
' in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 2. This method of delivering the sheet is known.
While the trolleys with the'fly sticks "21 reach their forward dead centre position on the rails 4|, the trolleys 50 connected to trolleys 55 by means of the rods or links 52 are equally moved forward in a positive manner, the said trolleys 55 15 carrying the spraying device and running on the rails 45.
During the rearward movement of the trolleys 55 the spraying device also moves backwards. v The control rollers l0 mounted on the control 29 levers 9 run up on the cams 41 and cause the opening of the spraying nozzles provided on the spraying device 5, whereby the printed sheet which has just been delivered is covered with a cloud of liquid paraflin or the like protecting the tally as shown inFigI'I, but so as to slope from the front towards the outer edge of the delivery table. Such a construction is shown in Figs. 8
and 9. In this case the upper guide rail for the trolley 50 of the spraying device 5 is disposed horizontally, and the latches 43 are shorter on the press side than on the front side. Due to the slots. 53 or lost motion providedin the rods 52 the trolley 55 is able to adjust itself to the varying distances of the trolley 50, as will be seen in Figs. 8 and 9.
