9 Claims. (01. 271-53) This invention relates to a printing machine provided with rocking cylinders and automatic sheet feed and delivery, and particularly to improvements in the sheet feeding means.
One object of the invention is to provide a drive for the carriage and impression cylinder so as to permit stopping of the impression cylinder when a sheet isfed or taken over by the grippers of the impression cylinder without interrupting the drive. According to the invention, this end is attained. by connecting a crank disc acting as planet wheel with a lever arrangement or a toothed wheel rolling on a rack for reciprocating the carriage, so that at the end position of the carriage utilized for feedingiand adjusting the sheet the rod connecting the lever or the toothed wheel with the crank pin of the planet wheel describes about'its link pin on the lever or the shaft of the toothed wheel a circle a segment of which will register with a segment of the curve described by the crank pin of the planet wheel. so that a motion of the carriage and impression cylinder, which could interfere with feeding and adjusting, does not occur.
Another object of the invention is to provide eans according to which the sheet carrying and holdingde'vices at the transfer of the sheet to the grippers, which covers a short period before and after the change in the direction of rotation of the cylinder, are coupled with the cylinder and driven" by it or are moved by springs so as to follow the cylinder. arrangement is to prevent the cylinder at the sheet transfer from carrying out a special motion relative to the sheet holding device and to'avoid interruption of the cylinder drive for the sheet transfer. The sheets are not fed to and-adjusted by cylinder marks but are straightened by front gages of the feed table, whereby betterand perfectly steady feeding and adjustment are-insured. The sheets are then taken over by the cylinder grippers in such manner that at the transfer the sheet carrying and holding means are displaced in harmony with the cylinder motion. 1
The removalof the sheets from the gages of the feeding table by the cylinder rippers in such manner that the sheet holding means carry out a movement corresponding to thecylinder motion does not necessarily require. temporary stopping of the cylinder, but the use of the cylinder drive mentioned above'which automatically causes a short standstill of the cylinder when the change, in the direction of rotation occurs The purpose of this insures steady sheet transfer ,to a still higher degree.
When the sheet is directly taken up from the front gages of thefeed table, the latter, preferably of the swing type andjprovided with a tilt- 5 ing drive, or a portion thereof adjoining the cylinder and fitted with front gages is .displaceably guided under spring tension approximately tan gentially to the cylinder and is moved back with, the cylinder by being for instance carried along by a driver on the cylinder. It is further possible to employ a swinging feed table or a portion thereof, fitted with front gages and possibly with means for securing the adjusted position, to which an oscillating motion corresponding to the partial rotation of the cylinder at the moment of closing of the grippers is imparted by suitable driving means, as alifting cam disposed on the cylinder The displaceably guided feed table or portion thereof is preferably fitted with means, as suction nozzles, for securing the. sheet in adjusted position during the transfer.
The invention further provides that the portion of the feed table adjacent the impression cylinders together with the means arranged thereon, as marks, lateral adjusting means, bar
lattice, etc., can be swung about a pivot located between the impression cylinders and the sheet v delivery means and that the remaining portion of the feed table can be turned up about a shaft arranged on the feeding frame. This arrangement facilitates the exposure of the impression cylinder formal-ring ready and renders the ink ing apparatus more accessible. It is possible 36 of course to movably dispose the entire feeding table at the feeder frame. 7
In case of a gap provided between the feed tableand the cylinder and the transfer of the sheets to the cylinder by means of intermediate 40 grippers, etc., the intermediate grippers or suckers which hold the sheet or a portion of the table to which the intermediate grippers or suckers are attached are, according to the invention, positively connected with their drive and are movedin'. harmony with the motion of the cylinder grippers, for instance, by the action of a driver attached to the cylinder. *The intermediate grippers may be-swin ing elements and receive a corresponding drive through corre- H spondingly formed driving members, as cam plates, etc.
'In further accordance with the invention one or more additional inking rollers, possibly provided with distributing rollers, are'ipifovided in .may be arranged on addition to the main inking apparatus disposed other side.
By way of example, several embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the general construction of the machine, in which the cylinder grippers receive the sheet directly from the front gages of the feed table;

Fig. 3is an elevation on an enlarged scale of the upper part of the machine;

In the machine frame I the impression cylinder 2 is rotatably disposed. The grippers 3 of the cylinder 2 are supplied with sheets from the feed pile 4 by the conveyors 5 of the feed table 6 which can be moved about the shaft 1 of the tape roller 8. The feed table 9 possesses an extension 9, Fig. 3, displaceably arranged in laterally positioned bearing plates l0 and reaching up to the impression cylinder 2. The bearing plates l9 can be turned by means of the handles 'll about pins l3 located between the impression cylinder 2 and the sheet delivery means comprising an endless band l2, as indicated in Figs. 1

As the extension 9 is movable about the pin I5, its end adjoining the 'cylinder 2 can be raised to deliver the printed sheets by a lifting .linkage I8 controlled by a shaft, which is only slightly indicated. Furthermore, between the bearing plates l0 upwardly movable front gages 20 i l9 for receiving the sheets conveyed to them from the pile 4 by the tapes 5 of the feedtable 6.

After the change in the direction of rotation of the cylinder the table extension 9 tension of the expanding springs l1. During this brief to and fro motion of the extension 9 together with the cylinder 2 the sheet is taken over by the grippers 3 and released by moving the front gages 20. The closing of the grippers can be effected during the rearward or forward motion of the cylinder 2 and of the extension 9.
Below the hinged feed table 6 the inking apparatus is arranged which comprises the ink fountain 24, the ink fountain roller 25, the ductor 29, the distributing rollers 21, 28 and the inking rollers 29, 30, 3| of which the rollers 30, 3| ink the form 32. In the construction shown in Fig. 7 the displaceably and swingably disposed extension 9 is provided with means for holding the sheet in adjusted position and preventing any displacement thereof. Such means may comprise suction nozzles or pressure fingers, etc. The suction means may be provided on the sheet support or extension 9 or, as shown in Fig. 7, form a suction bar 5'! controlled so that its suction members after by the front gages 20 engage the sheets by suction and release each sheet after the closing of the grippers.
In the constructions described the cylinder grippers directly receive the sheet from the gages of the feed table and the gap between the feed table and the cylinder for delivering the'sheet is produced by lifting the feed table, but the arrangement may also be such that a space is provided between the feed table and the cylinder and the sheets are conveyed from the table gages to the cylinder grippers by means of intermediate grippers.
In the construction shown in Fig. 8 the sheet guided to the front gages 20 and adjusted by them is passed by a reciprocating suction bar 58 into the position shown in Fig. 8, at which the transfer of the sheet is effected by the grippers 2. The suction bar 58 is arranged on a slide 59 displaceably guided by a member and connected by a rod 6| with the free end of an arm 62 which swings about a pin 63 and is moved to and fro by suitable means, not shown. The rod 6| is longitudinally displaceably guided in a member 64 movably disposed at the free end of the arm 52. Between an adjusting ring and the guide member 64 a spring 66 is provided and restricted in its action by the enlarged head 51 of the rod 6|. Fig. 8 shows the ,position of the parts at the time when after lifting of the front gages 20 the slide 59 of with the sheet held by the sucthe suction bar 58 advanced into the position at which the sheet is taken over by the cylinder grippers. T The slide 59 possesses at its front end a downwardly directed stop or nose 68 which is engaged by the driver 22 of the impression cylinder 2 shortly before the latter .completes its return motion. The slide 59 is forced back by the driver 22 against the action'bf the spring 66 and after the change in the direction of rotation follows the driver 22. During this motion of the slide 59 the cylinder grippers are closed while the suction bar 58 releases the sheet. v
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9 the members which transfer the sheet from" the front gages of the feed table to the position at which it is taken over by the cylinder grippers are formed as oscillating grippers. The suction members 69 are disposed on a shaft 10 constructed as suction pipe and supporting an arm 12 which is fitted with a roll II and controlled by a cam 13 cooperating in the rotation of the cylinder 2. Another engaging the ex arm 14 on the shaft III is controlled through the medium of a bar 15 by a suitable control member, cam, eccentric, etc., not shown in such manner that the suction'members 69 carry out a swinging motion to convey the gages 20 into the position is yieldably connected with rection, since aslide 16 shown. The arm 14 the bar 15 in one diarticulated to the arm II I and guided on the bar 15 is pressed by a spring 11 against a ring I8 secured to the bar 115, so that the cam 13 is enabled to move the suction arms 69 independently of the control bar 15. The cam 13 efiects'a short to and fro motion of the members 69, which exactly corresponds to the motion of the cylinder 2 at the change in the direction of rotation.
Fig. 10 shows a construction which differs from the one shown in Fig. 7 only in so far as the table extension 9 is not re'ctilinearly displaceable and not engaged and taken along by a driver of the cylinder 2, but is swingably arranged by means of a lever system 19 of the parallelogram type. The front pair of levers is connected with a roller lever 80 the roller rotating with the cylinder 2 and is drawn against the back of the cam by a spring 82 engaging the arm 80. During the portion of the cylinder motion at which the grippers are closed the cam 13 produces a reciprocating motion, corresponding to the cylinder motion, of the table extension 9, in which theiront gages 20 and suction mem- .bers 51 provided for keeping the sheet in adjusted position participate.
I claim:
l. A printing machine of the rocking cylinder type provided with automatic sheet feed and delivery and a cylinder driven by means of a reciprocating carriage, said carriage being provided with a rack and the cylinder being provided with a gear adapted to'mesh with said rack, in which the carriage is driven from a crank disc forming the planet wheel of a planet gear by means of a toothed wheel rolling on a rack and engaging a rack of the carriage in such manner that when the sheet is taken over by the grippers of the impression cylinder the cylinder temporarily stops without any interruption of the drive.
2. A printing machine of the rocking cylinder registered by the gages of the feed table is taken over by the cylinder grippers, the grippers, before and after the change in the of the cylinder are moved forward and backward in unison with the table.
3. A printing machine according to claim 1, in which, when a sheet registered by the gages of the feed table is taken over by the cylinder grippers, the grippers, before and after the change in the direction of rotation of the cylinder are moved forward and backward in correspondence with the table. 4. A printing machine according to claim 2, in which a gap is provided between the feed table and the cylinder and the adjusted sheet is delivered to the cylinder by intermediate grippers. suction bars, etc., and in which said grippers cooperate before 3nd after the change in the direcsheet from the front 8| of which moves on a cam 13 direction of rotation 5. A printing machine according to claim 2, in which, when the sheets are directly taken ofl from the feed table by the cylinder grippers, the feed table formed in table and fitted with a tilting drive or a portion of the table adjoining the cylinder and provided with front gages is longitudinally displaceably guided, taken along by a driver of the cylinder during its backward swing and following after the change in the direction of rotation of the cylinder owing to the action of a spring.

A printing machine according to claim 2, in which when the sheets are directly taken off from the feed table by the cylinder grippers, the feed table being formed in known manner as a swinging table and fitted with a tilting means for a portion of the table adjoining the cylinder and provided with front gages is longitudinally displaceably guided and is forwardly moved by a driver on the cylinder during its backward swing and-rearwardly moved after the change in the direction of rotation of the cylinder owing to the action of a spring and in which the longitudinally displaceably guided feed table or portion of the table is provided with means, as suction nozzles, for securing the sheets in adjusted position.

In a'printing machine, a frame, a cylinder mounted for oscillatory movement in said frame, means to oscillate the cylinder, a feed table mounted for swinging movement of its forward edge toward and from said cylinder, stop gages positioned for contact by the forward edge of a sheet when carried on said table upon the forward edge of the table being swung away from the, cylinder, means supporting said table for longitudinal reciprocation toward and from the cylinder, grippers carried by said cylinder to grip the forward edge-of the paper upon the table known manner as swinging sheet when carried on said being at the forward end of its reciprocatory movement, and means to reciprocate the table in timed relationto the oscillations of the cylinder:
8. In a printing machine, a frame, a cylinder mounted for oscillatory movement in said frame, means to oscillate the cylinder, a feed table mounted for swinging movement of its forward edge toward and from said cylinder, stop gages positioned for contact by ,the forward edge of a sheet when carried on said table upon the forward edge of the table being swung away from the cylinder, means supporting said table for longitudinal reciprocation toward and from the cylinder and including a supplemental frame pivoted at its forward end to the first frame, grippers carried by said cylinder to grip the forward edge of the paper upon the table being at the forward end of its reciprocatory movement, and means to reciprocate the table in timedrelation to the oscillations of the cylinder.
9. In a printing machine, a frame, a cylinder mounted for oscillatory movement in said frame, means to. oscillate the cylinder, a feed table mounted for swinging movement of its forward edge toward and from said cylinder, stop gages positioned for contact by the forward edge of a table 'upon the. forward edge of the table being swung away from the cylinder, means supporting said table for longitudinal reciprocation toward and from the cylinder and including pivots supporting said table adjacent the rear edge thereof, grippers carried by said cylinder to grip the forward edge of the paper upon the table being at the forward end of its reciprocatory movement, and means to reciprocate the table in timed relation to the oscillations of the cylinder.
