TOOL
Filed May 4, 1955 Jacob zf3a/Lwn ya/711972 Patented Sept. 24, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOOL Application May 4, 1935, Serial No.. 19,896
1 Claim.
This invention relates to tools and has special reference to a compound wrench used to unscrew plumbing or other parts which are inaccessible with the ordinary tool.
One important object of the invention is to provide a novel form of compound wrench so constructed that whenever one of the wrench members is in active use the remaining members are used to actuate the active member.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a novel form of compound wrench especially adapted for use selectively as a half socket or spanner wrench or a screw driver wrench.
In using a half socket wrench it is desirable to forcibly hold the wrench in engagement with the bolt or nut being turned and it is a third important object of the invention to provide an improved form of such wrench having a screw driver part arranged to receive pressure from the operators hand to hold the spanner element properly and safely in engagement and against Slipping off the part being turned.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be presently explained, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail end view of a part of the wrench member at the left hand end of Figure 1.
In the embodiment of the invention as here illustrated there is provided a fiat bar ID of greater width than thickness, the bar and all other parts of the wrench being formed integrally of rigid metal. At one end of this bar there is provided a curved projection l I which is arcuate in cross section and at its other end there is provided a second curved projection l2 also arcuate in cross section and provided on its arcuate working edge with a notch I3. These members H and I2 have parallel axes and these axes are arranged at obtuse angles to the plane of the flat bar H1. The member II has vertical edges M which lie in planes substantially radial to the axis of this member while the member I2 is likewise provided with vertical edges l5 lying in planes radial to the axis of the member l2. Projecting from one edge of the bar I0 is a screw driver blade It for slotted bolts, pipe caps and the like, the member being thus a species of screw driver. This member I6 is of general trapezoidal form with the narrower part joining the bar l0 so that the blade H] can be gripped conveniently with the fingers of the operator at the corners where the blade l6 meets the flat bar Ill. The 5 member l6 also provided with rectangular notches I! in its corners forming limitingshoulder portions. The member l6 lies throughout in the plane of the bar I!) so that it forms practically a Widening of the bar I0 at the place at which it projects from the bar l0. 1
It is to be observed that whenever the member I I or the member I2 is in active use the remaining member, due to itsparallel and oppositely disposed position, constitutes a crank handle for 15 rotating the member in use. Furthermore, when the operator uses one of the members H and [2 as a crank handle by grasping it with one hand, he places his remaining hand on the member I6 and the adjacent portion of the bar 10 and ex- 20 erts pressure thereon to hold the engaged member H or l2 from slipping off the article with which it is engaged.
Similarly, when the member I8 is in active use the two members II and I2 form hand grips by means of which the member It may be both rotated and forcibly held engaged with the article to be turned.
Thus in using any one of the members with which the tool is provided..the remaining members act as holding and turning elements for the used member.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the-kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles involved. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and de- 40 scribed but it is desired to include all such as come within the scope of the matter claimed.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the kind described comprising a fiat bar, curved projections at opposite ends of the bar and extending in opposite directions from each other at an obtuse angle with respect to the bar, a screw driver blade projecting laterally from the bar and adjacent one end thereof and being in the same plane therewith, said blade extending transversely to the curved projections, the blade tapering outwardly from the bar toward its free end and being provided at its free end with a re duced port-ion forming limiting shoulders whereby the side of the bar and a tapering side of the blade act as a finger rest when the device is in use.
