SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR WRINGERS Original Filed Feb. 28, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Patented Sept. 24, 1935 EP-AT-T-E Mr or rice Application February 28, .1934, Serial No. 713,411
Renewed July 15,'1935 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in washing machine wringers, and more particularly to a safety attachment whereby the likelihood. of injury occasioned by the oper- 5 ators fingers being caught between the rollers of the wringer, is substantially eliminated.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a safety attachment for wringers which can be readily applied to the conven- 10 tional wringer assembly without altering the present construction.
Still another important object of the present invention is to provide a safety attachment for wringers wherein means is provided which will 15 release the pressure roller of the wringer, and will also tend to urge the hand away from the wringer rolls before the fingers are actually caught.
Other important objects and advantages of the 20 invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of a conventional wringer assembly, showing the at- 25 tachment secured to the opposite side thereof.
Figure 2 represents a horizontal sectional'view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents a vertical sectional view through the attachment.
30 Figure 4 represents a vertical transverse sectional view through the wringer and attachment, taken substantiallyon line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 represents a fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of 5 Figure 1.
Figure 6 represents a fragmentary detailed sectional view showing the adjustment for one of the riders.
Figure '7 represents a perspective view of the 40 horizontal connecting shaft.
Figure 8 represents a perspective view of the pressure roll releasing handle engaging member.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Fig- 45 ure 1 that numeral 5 represents generally the conventional wringer which consists of a frame 6 in which is mounted the usual drive roll 1 and pressure roll 8. The pressure roll 8 has its bear- 2 ing blocks engaged by an elongated strip spring 50 9 located in the hinged, hollow upper portion In of the frame. The free end of this hinged portion I is secured to the frame proper 6 by a latch II and this latch can be released by the handle l2. This construction is conventional 5 and now on the market. The spring 9 can be adjusted, as is well known, by a suitable screw I3 or other suitable means.
The attachment is generally referred to in Figures 3 and 4 by numeral l4 and consists of an inverted U-shaped and substantially hollow frame 5 l5, in the depending leg portions of which are the bearing blocks [6-46 upon which the shaft ends of the lower fixed roll I! rests, while above the blocks l6-l6 are the blocks l|'l|, which have seats [8 therein for receiving the shaft ends 10 of the upper mobile roll I9. A shoulder I9 is provided at one side of the seat on each block 11 and this shoulder has an overhanging portion 20 with respect to the shaft end 21 of the roll l9 so that in the event the roll I9 is forced upwardly, the shaft end 2| in riding against the over hanging shoulder portion will be moved in the direction of the arrow in Figure 5, that is, in the direction of the pressure roll 8 of the wringer.
Resting upon each of the shaft ends 2| is a 20 rider 22 which is provided with a countersunk opening therein through which extends the threaded barrel 23. A nut 24 is engageable on this threaded barrel and against the rider 22 to retain the barrel positively connected to the rider. 25 The barrel 23 is internally threaded to receive the threaded end 25 of the rod 26 which extends upwardly and connects to the laterally disposed arm 21 at the corresponding end of the shaft 28, which shaft is journaled through suitable bearing 30 elements 29. V
A bracket 3|] in the upper portion of the frame l5 rotatably supports a member 3| which is provided with a laterally disposed portion 32 having a foot 33 engageable with the adjacent arm 21 of the shaft 28, while the opposite end of the member 3| is provided with an upwardly disposed portion 34 extending through an opening -35 in the upper portion of the frame I5 and an obliquely disposed extension 36 which is disposed 40 over the handle I2 on the conventional wringer.
As is clearly shown in Figure 4, the upper mobile roll I9 is in close proximity to the pressure roll 8 of the wringer. A suitable guide bar 31 can be interposed between the drive roll 7 of the wringer and the fixed roll ll of the attachment so that material can be well guided toward the wringer rolls.
In operation of the attachment, material is fed between the rolls 11-19 and permitted tobe caught between the wringer rolls. In the event, the operators hand starts between the rolls l1 and I9, the upper roll l9, being free to rise, will be forced upwardly by the hand and in riding against the overhanging shoulder portion 20, of
the bearing blocks H, the shaft ends 2| will cause the roller [8 to move toward the pressure roll 8, and as the pressure roll 8 is moving in the direction ofthe arrow in Figure 4, when the roll I9 engages the same, the roll I 9 will be driven in the opposite direction so that there is a tendency of the roll Hi to force the hand out from between the rolls I 'I-l9.
Simultaneously with this action of the roll IS, the rod 26 lifts, while it rotates the shaft 28 and causes actuation of the member 3l, which in turn throws its extension 36 downwardly and exerts pressure against the handle l2 so that the handle releases the catch II and permits the hinged section [0 of the wringer frame 6 to fly up, thus releasing the tension of the spring from the pressure roll 8.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter,
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a wringer including a pressure roll and a drive roll and means for releasing the pressure from the pressure roll; a pair of auxiliary rolls, one of said rolls being an idler, the other roll being vertically movable, guide means for moving the last mentioned roll toward the pressure roll to engage the latter when the former is moved vertically, and means engaged by the said vertically movable roll for actuating the said pressure releasing means of the pressure roll.
