Description

T. H, DODGE. Barbed Fence "Wire.
No. 201,507. Patented Marh 19, 1878..
WZZUESEECS; 65w
' jTzz/erzz azi N. PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASMNGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. DODGE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WASHBURN & MOEN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT lN BARBED FENCE-WIRES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,507, dated March 19, 1878 application filed March 6,1878.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, Tnoms H. DODGE, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed-Wire Fences and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming apart of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a section of barbed fence-wire. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section on line A B, Fig. 1. Fig.3 represents atop or plan View of a section of barbed fence'wire made somewhat differently from that shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section on line 0 D, Fig. 3.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make anduse the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings, the parts marked A rep-. resent the main fence-wire, having bends O and D. Rings or platesa are passed over the bends C, after which barbs B are passed through under loops or bends O, as fully indicated in the drawings, when, if pressureis applied at the points I) of loops or bends G, the parts will be locked quite securely in position. If preferred, the barbs may beflattened, as indicated at o.
In Figs. 3 and 4, the barbs B" and B are made in somewhat different form, but are provided with projecting points d and d", for the same purpose as the points din Figs. land 2.
The particular mode of making the barbs and securing the same to the main wire, in the first instance, forms no part of my present invention, and such construction may be of any known or desired form.
I also hereby disclaim in this applicationv the particular construction shown in the drawings, as that forms the subject-matter of another application for Letters Patent. I
Whatever form of barb or the mode of attachin g the same to the main wire, in the first instance, is adopted, I afterward draw or pass themain wires, with the barbs thereon, through a bath of tin' or molten metal, and by which operation the parts are more closely and securely united or combined together, while at the same time the manufactured article will be less liable to rust or corrode when exposed to the atmosphere, or tostorms of rain or snow, after the fence-wires have been secured to the fence-posts about the fields which they are to protect.
Having described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 7 An improved method of making wire-fence material-namely, securing barbs to the wire,
and then drawing the wire and attached barbs through a bath of nioltenmetal.
THOS. H. DODGE.
