Description

' DEVICE FOR PREVENTING UNROLLING OF ROLLED SHEETS Filed July 11, 1954 Patented Sept. 17, 1935 NITED TES PATENT QFFIQE DEVICE FOR PREVENTING UNROLLING OF ROLLED SHEETS 4 Claims.
My invenion relates to improvements in roll holding and forming implements for use with i llieets of paper, bristol board, parchment or the ire.
In handling rolled blue prints, drawings, or written sheets for reading, copying, or other purposes, it is frequently desirable to partially unroll the same, particularly in handling large sheets in a small space, and to hold the same in such condition with a portion only of the sheet exposed to view.
Having the foregoing in mind, my invention is particularly directed toward providing a practical inexpensive implement which may be readily manipulated relative to such sheets to securely hold the roll against unwinding and to hold partially unrolled sheets against rolling up.
A specific object of my invention is to provide an implement for the above stated purposes which is adapted to yieldingly clamp the rolled portion of the sheet against unwinding and to increase the clamping action as the number of convolutions in the roll and consequently the tendency to unroll, increases.
Other objects will presently appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment of my invention which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing and defined in the claims appended hereto.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the use of my invention.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation.
Figure 3 is a similar view illustrating the manner in which the roll is formed and clamped, and
Figure 4 is a top plan view.
In its preferred embodiment my novel roll holding implement comprises a flat elongate base plate I, substantially rectangular, and having an involute coil forming member 2 upstanding from one end thereof with one end in continuation of said plate so that a sheet passing over said plate may enter into said coil. Preferably the holder is formed in a single piece from a strip of flat resilient material, for instance celluloid, one end of the strip being coiled back upon itself into a single reactive spiral loop to form said member 2 and to dispose the free end 3 of said loop or member in yielding contact with the upper face of the plate I so that a sheet entered into said member is yieldingly clamped to said plate I. The corners of the free end of the plate I and member 2 are rounded to obviate tearing the sheet in rolling and unrolling the same.
In using the described implement, after a roll has been formed, the base plate I is inserted under an edge of the sheet which is held stationary, and the loop is slipped over the roll.
It will be observed that the reactive tendency of the roll, that is its tendency to unroll, increases with the number of convolutions in the roll, and hence the clamping action exerted by the free end 3 is correspondingly increased by the reaction of the roll against the same. the plate in one direction the sheet may be unwound as desired, and the rolled portion will be held against accidental unrolling in any position. Also, the roll will be held by the straight or flat end of the base plate I, against rolling 10 up after it has been partially unrolled, said straight or fiat end projecting tangentially from the loop a distance greater than the diameter of the loop.
The foregoing implement is capable of various 15 auxiliary uses. It may be used to mark a place lengthwise of the sheet, or by shifting it laterally to mark a place transversely of the sheet, and it may also be utilized to hold a sheet rolled for storage or other purposes.
Obviously my novel implement may be made in various sizes and is susceptible of modification in form and structure without departure from the inventive concept disclosed, and it is to be understood that right is herein reserved to all such modifications falling fairly within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An implement for holding rolled sheets of paper comprising a base having at one end thereof a roll holding loop for securing a sheet between itself and said base, said loop having a free end yieldingly engaging the top of said base to receive a portion of the sheet between said end and said base.
2. An implement for holding rolled sheets of paper comprising a base plate having an end spirally coiled back upon itself to form a substantially closed loop to hold a rolled sheet, the free end of the loop to receive the sheet between itself and said plate and the base plate being flat and projecting tangentially from the loop a distance greater than the diameter of the loop.
3. An implement for holding rolled sheets of paper comprising a base plate having at one end thereof a roll holding member for receiving a sheet between itself and said base plate, said member yieldingly clamping the sheet to the base.
4. An implement for holding rolled sheets of paper comprising a, base plate having an end spirally coiled back upon itself to form a loop to hold a rolled sheet, said loop having a free end yieldingly engaging the top of said plate to receive a portion of the sheet between said end and said base plate.
