Description

F. STEPFANY. Pendant for- Watches.
No. 201,462. PatentedvMarch 19, 1878.
MFETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHXNGTDN i} C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i FRANCIS STEFFANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROYEMENT IN PENDANTS FOR WATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,462, dated March 19, 1878; application filed February 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, FRANCIS STEFFANY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watch-Cases; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to watch-cases; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the pendant in the manner hereinafter described, whereby the manufacturer is enabled to put gold trimmings on silver cases at small cost, as will be fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawing, to which reference is made, and which fully illustrates my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying, my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are details of the same.
A represents the center ring of a watchcase, to which the lids are attached in the usual manner. B represents the pendant, provided at the bottom with a hollow or shell base, 0, made separate from the pendant and soldered to it.
By making this base hollow, as shown, the manufacturer is enabled to make a large base for the pendant with the same amount of gold.
At the point on the ring Awhere the pendant is attached are cut recesses a a, so as to steady the pendant, the base fitting in said recesses, and enabling the workman to work to much greater advantage.
In the sides of the pendant B are made holes I) b, and in these are fitted and secured metal cups d d, the bottoms of which areso to saypunched in or made concave from the outside, whereby the ring D may be held securely to the pendant with very little metal.
This invention is, of course, equally applicable to gold cases as to silver cases, or silver cases having gold trimmings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The pendant B, provided with the hollow or shell base 0, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the pendant B, having holes I), with the recessed cups d, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS STEFFANY.
