Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. S. GARR, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
` WATER-CLOSET.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,142, dated May 4, 1858.
To @ZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lViLLrAM S. CARR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in later-Closets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construct-ion and operation of my invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of the specification, in which a frontview of a watercloset is represented, and the handle and rod are shown in section.
My said invention applies to t-hose water closets that are worked by aI handle coming through the seat, and provided wit-h a lever acting on the pan that sets up against the bot-tom of the basin, usually termed the pan closets. In this character of closet, the concave ring or cup through which the rod from the handle passes, has been set on a column bolted to the hopper of the closet and connected to the said ring or cup near one side, the consequence of which has often been that the carpenter in fitting the seat onto the closet nds great difficulty in making the wood work come to the top edge of said cup; sometimes it is too high and the cup has to be let into the wood some distance, or else tho (up projects above the seat, and a carpenter will often turn said cup partially around on its column to bring said cup to the hole he has made in the seat, and thus the rod will be brought out of line with the lever.
The nature of my said invention consists in attaching the aforesaid concave ring or cup to the upper end of a hollow column through which the rod to the lever passes, said cup being attached by a screw in such a manner that the varying thicknesses of the seat can be accommodated and the parts kept properly and firmly in place.
In the drawing a, is the soil pipe, b, the
hopper, c, the basin, CZ, the seat, c, the pan, shown by dotted lines, and set on the spindle f. g is the locking cam on said spindle f, taking a pin on the lever 71 that is set on a ulcrum 2'. These parts thus far are constructed and operate in the usual and well known manner and therefore need not be further described.
7c, is a projection from the hopper c, through which the lower end of the hollow column Z, passes, and is secured by a nut n, and this column is to be centrally over the lever h.
m, is the cup or concave ring connected to the column Z by a screw at o, by which the ring can be screwed down onto the column until said cup or ring is Hush with the top of the seat and rests in the opening provided for it.
p is a rod with a handle q on its upper end and a fork and roller s at its lower end. Said roller works in a slot 1, in the lever h. A washer is provided as at l, to render the rod y) noiseless in its movement when drawn up for emptying the pan e.
The operation and advantages of my improvement will be apparent from the ore going without recapitulation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The concave ring or cup m screwed onto the hollow column Z, in the manner and for the purposes specified, when this is used for passing the rod to the lever of pan water closets, substantially as specied.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature, before the subscribing witnesses, this twentieth day of April 1858.
WILLIAM S. CARR.
