Description

J. BANWELL PAVING STRIP Aug. 27, 1935.
Filed July 21, 1952 O l I n7.
Patented Aug. 27, 1935 PAVING STRIP James Banwell, Cleveland, Ohio Application July 21, 1932, Serial No. 623,806
1 Claim.
This invention relates to paving strips commonly employed between the paving slabs or blocks of a street, and between such slabs or blocks and the curbing. The general object of the 6 invention is to provide a strong durable paving strip, of economical construction, which permits free expansion and contraction of the paving proper without danger of distortion or fracture of the strip. Another object of the invention is to provide a water-proof strip which can be conveniently handled and shipped, and is capable of effecting a permanent adhesive union with cement or other paving slabs or blocks.
In the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly in section and partly broken away, of a pavement showing the improved strip; and v Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the pavement partly broken away to" show the construction of the strip.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 denotes a street pavement comprising curbing 2 and blocks or slabs 3 preferably of cement, which curbing it will be understood extends along both sides of the street or road 4. The slabs or blocks 3 suitably arranged between the curbs, may be of any desired size and shape, but are preferably rectangular, as shown. The improved paving strip consists of a relatively thin and flat body portion 6 of elastic and flexible material such as petroleum residuum, of asphaltic rubber-like texture and consistency. As the body 6 of the strip is identical with that of the paving strip illustrated in my prior Patent No. 1,134,939, granted April 6, 1915, further description is deemed unnecessary.
The strips are molded into any desired length for insertion between adjacent paving slabs or between said slabs and the curbing and secured to each side face is a covering member I consisting of two plys or sheets 8 of thin tough paper, coated upon their inner superposed faces with a layer of waterproof adhesive material 9. A layer ill of suitably arranged vegetable fibre interposed between the sheets 8 and embedded in the adhesive 9, reinforces the strips and in co-operation with paper sheets 8 provides a suitable covering. As the outer faces of the paper plys 8 are smooth and non-adhesive the strips can be readily shipped and handled and packed one upon the other for a reasonable length of time without sticking. However, the water proof adhesive 9, which is of tar like consistency impregnates the plys 8 sufficiently to render them waterproof.
After the strips have been inserted between the concrete slabs 3 or between the slabs and the curbing, the strips soon form an adhesive union with the concrete, and being substantially nonresilient would be liable to rupture under abnormal expansion and contraction of the pavement if fixed to each other against relative movement. This danger is obviated however, due to the fact that the adhesive 9 is sufficiently gummy to permit of slight relative sliding movement between the plys of each covering member 1.
It has one to the other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A paving strip adapted to seal the space between adjacent sections of a street paving comprising a body member of flexible material, a pair of covering members affixed to opposite sides thereof, said covering members each including superposed sheets of tough paper adhesively secured together, said sheets being capable of relative sliding movement with respect to each other under expansion and contraction movements of said pavement, and reinforcing means between said sheets.
