v2. A device of the kind side may be connected to the opposite strip inr any suitable manner, as for example, some type of sliding, hookless fastening means. It will be particularly noted that when the handle is withdrawn as indicated thedotted lines in Fig. 2, the plate I 9 firmly engages between thesheets, I3
and I4 so that the same, to all intents and'pur'- poses, is the same as if rigidly connected td the case, so that there is no slipping and skewing of the case when the same is carried by the han-- dles. When it is desired to carry the case under the arm without the handles, Athe handles are pushed into place and retained therein out of the way, without in any way detracting fromv the appearance of the device. i Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various vimmaterial modifications'may be made in the same without departing lfrom the spirit of my invention;Y hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.. f WhatI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters, Patent is:
1.` In a device of the kind described lmaterial arranged to form an elongated relatively narrow slip pocket having one side wall providing an aperture, a member projecting from said apertured side wall above and in close proximity to said aperture and providing arecess in the side opposite the aperture, said member having an aperture in alignment with the aperture in said side wall, an elongated member positioned in said pocket, ahandle piece fastened to the elongated member and projecting through Ysaid aligned apertures, the projecting end of said handle piece being elongated and adapted to be positionedwithin said recesswhen it is retracted, said handle piece and elongated member being operatively related in a manner whereby extension of-thehandle Vpiece actuates said elongated member to a position wherein it is wedged between the side walls of the pocket adjacent the top thereof. l described comprising a pair of material sheets fastened Vtogether at their edges to form the side walls of a slip pocket, one of saidV` sheets having an aperture therein, a member projecting laterally from said apertured sheet above and Ain close proximity to said aperture, and providing a recess in the side opposite the, aperture, Ysaid member having,V an aperture in alignment withr said aperture in thejmaterial sheet, an elongated member lpositioned in said pocket, a handle piece fastened to the elongated member and projecting-through said aligned a position whereinit is wedged between the side walls of theV pocket in proximity to their adjacent line of connection. A device of the kindy describedcomprising material arranged to form "anelongatedrelatively `narrow slip pocket, having one side wall providing a pairv ofiapertures adjacent one edgeV of the'pocket, a member projecting laterally from said apertured side wall above and in close proximity to said apertures and providing a recess in the side opposite said apertures, said member providing a pair of apertures respectively in `alignmentwith-the apertures in said side wall, Van elongatedgmember positioned in said pocket,
an inverted U-shaped handle piece having its Y stem portions respectively projecting through said aligned apertures and fastened to said elongated member, the transverse portion of the handle piece being adapted toV be positioned within saidrecess when the handle piece is retracted, said handle piece and elongated member being operatively related in a manner whereby extension of the handle piece actuates said elongated member toa position wherein it is wedged between the side walls of the pocket adjacent the top thereof.

A Vdevice of the kind described comprising a pair of material sheets fastened together at their edges to form the side walls of a slip pocket, one of said sheets having a pair of apertures adjacent to the connected portions of thetop of said sheets,V a member projecting laterally from said apertured sheet above and in close proximity to member, the transverse `portion of the handle piece beingadapted to be positioned within said Vrecess when `the handle piece is retracted, said handle piece and elongated member being operatively related in a manner whereby; extension of the handle piece-actuates said member to a position wherein it is wedged between the side walls of the pocket. f,V j Y 5. A hand bag comprising a body portion providing apair of material sheets fastened together at their'edges to provide a slip pocket," one of said sheets having a pair of apertures adjacent to the connected portions of the top of said sheets,a strip of material projecting laterallyfrom said apertured sheet above and in close proximity to said apertures, said member having `a recess on the side opposite said apertures and providing a pair of apertures'in said recess respectively in` alignment with the apertures in said material sheet, an elongated member positioned in said pocket, an inverted U-shaped handle piece havingy its stern portions respectively projectingv y through said aligned apertures and fastened tov said elongated membenthe transverse portion of the handle piece being adapted to be posi- `tioned within said recess when the handle piece is retracted, said handle piece and member being operatively related in a manner whereby extenside walls ofthe pocket adjacent the top thereof.
