Description

W. J. OARNBS, Jr.
Buckles.
Patented March 12,1878.

INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
N. PETERS. PNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. DIG. v
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. OARNES, JR., OF GONZALES, TEXAS.
lM PROVEM ENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,093, dated March 12, 1878; application filed June 29, 1877.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CARNES, Jr., of Gonzales, in the county of Gonzales and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The same letters and figures of reference are used to indicate the corresponding parts.
' After describing the invention, its nature and extent will be shown in the claim.
The object of my invention is to furnish a harnessbuckle which can be fastened to the harness without sewing.
In case of accident or in any emergency, the advantages of my invention over the ordinary harness-buckle are obvious.
Figure 1 is a top'view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, taken through the lines as w.
A is the frame. B is the raised loop, and, with the cross-bar O, forms a slot or loop. D is the central crossbar, to which is pivoted the tongue E on one side, and the tongues F F, which rest on the cross-bar O, on the other side. The cross-bar G is on the rear end of the buckle. The frame (including the loop) of my buckle is struck from a single rectangular plate of metal. The tongues E F F play on the same side of the buckle. The loop B is formed by turning the end of the frame at right angles with the plane of the buckle after the slot is made between the cross-bar O and the loop B. The buckle is fastened to the strap a; by the tongues F F. The tug or other strap is fastened, taken up, or let out by the tongue E, and the extra length is passed through the raised loop B.
The utility of my invention is too evident to harness-makers and to others having occasion to use harness-buckles to need further explanation. I
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A buckle composed of the rectangular frame A, provided with the raised loop B, at right angles with the frame A, the cross-bars O and G, and the central cross-bar D, to which is pivoted the tongues F F and the tongue E, all opening on the upper side of the buckle, and the under side of said buckle being in the same plane, substantially as shown. and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of May, 1877.
WILLIAM JAMES OARNES, JR.
