Description
W. W. SMITH.-
Egg-Carrier.
Patented Malbh 5, 1878.
No. 20l-Q62.
N-PETERS. PHOTO-IJTHOGRAPHEH. WASHINGTON, D101 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM w. SMITH, oncHIoAeo, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-CARRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,062, dated March 5, 1878; application filed November 29, 1876.
Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Egg-Carriers, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to pack eggs for transportation, so as to keep them in good order.
It consists in placing them in receptacles made by compressing paperpulp so as to form sheets with hemispherical cups, which, being placed face to face in a box, will hold each egg in an independent compartment. The cups are so disposed that intervals shall be formed between the backs of the sheets sufficient to receive an intermediate series of eggs.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the back of one of the paper sheets. Fig. 2 is a section on the line so a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 1.
The sheets A are made by pressing paperpulp in a former into squares having hemispherical .cups B disposed in relation to one another, as shown. These cups are intended to receive the eggs, and then a reversed sheet is laid over them, and each recess will contain a single egg.
On the back of the upper sheet other eggs may be placed in the spaces between the con- 0 vex faces of the cups, as shown in Fig. 3.
regarding it as preferable that the sheets should rest one upon the other, as shown.
Other materials analogous to paper-pulp may be employed to form the sheets, such as pulped scrapings of leather or felt. The sheets or trays, when made of pulp, are preferably pressed into form in wire molds, from which the surplus moisture can readily escape.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tray for carrying eggs, made of paperpulp or an anologous material, formed with cavities, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W. W. SMITH.
