IMPROVEM'ENT IN OBSTETRICAL lSUPPORTERS.

Specification forming partici' Letters Patent No. 201,027, dated March 5, 1878; application filed January 10, 1878.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN LOREE, of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Obstetrical Supporters, of which the following is a specification:

This invention is intended for the use of women in labor; but parts are adaptable for the support of patients who are conned to bed for a long time, and so require relief from the monotony of a strictly recumbent position.

In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.

The same letters are employed in both iigures in the indication of identical parts.

A is a horizontal rod or tube, which forms the lower part ofthe frame, tted with a joint in the middle to permit its being folded.

Arms B B are attached to the bar A by means of eyes, whichpermit their adjustment, and they are furnished with set-screws B, by means of which they are screwed to the bottom of the bed-board. The swiveling heads of these set-screws are padded on their faces.

C C are vertical rods or bars, hinged to the bottom bar A, jointed in the middle, and furnished with collars Gl, by means of which the joints are made stiff. Arms B2 are attached to the vertical rods C G, and furnished with set-screws B3, like those of the lower arms B, which rods are intended to slip down on the top of the foot-board, to which they are secured b v means of the screws B3, the arms themselves being secured to the rods C C when adjusted by means of set-screws.

Horizontal rods G2 C2 are attached by hinges to the upper ends of rods C O, and when eX- tended are held by sliding sleeves, which slip over the joint. They are also secured in place by adjustable braces O3, hinged at one end to U2, and bearing in sockets at the other against the rods G.

The frame-pieces are connected by transverse rods D D', secured in their sockets by means of sprin gs, which admit of their removal.

Rings are attached to the back of rods C C, near their top, to which cords are fastened, which extend down, and are secured to outer ends of the arms B B, forming guys to relieve the strain on the vertical posts.

G G are semicircular knee-pads, attached by eyes Gr to the posts C C, and attached adjustably by means of set-screws. They are attached to the arms by a tube, which slides over the arm, so as to permit the horizontal adjustment of their position by sliding them in or out, when they may be secured by means of set-screws. The arms are also furnished with exible joints, which permit the pad to be folded up against the frame.

H H are stirrups attached to cords dependent from the horizontal arms C2. Hl are other stirrups, formed to receive the wrist or arm, and attached to the same cord H2.

sustained upon the arms C2, and adjustably fastened to side straps I by means of buckles. The straps are hung upon the cords H3, which pass through rings on the arms C2, and thence down through rings on the collars F, and thence to the stirrups H. The back of the pad is padded, and by drawing upon the stirrups H the patient may lift herself, and Sustain part of her weight, or raise and Support her back free from the bed. K is a similar support for the shoulders, and hung on adjustable straps from the outer ends of the arms O2 C2.

My invention is distinguished from prior devices in the use of overhanging arms, by means of which the parts attached thereto are suspended overhead.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The sectional frame with hinged joints and sleeves, in combination with the arms B B2, and set-screws Bl B2, for attaching the frame to the foot-board of the bed, substantially in the manner set forth.

2. In combination with the frame and over hanging arms C2, adjustable stirrups H H and cords H2, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with the frame and overhanging arms C2, the adjustable back-support I I and stirrups H, connected by cords H3 passing through rings or pulleys on the vertical and horizontal arms C C2, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of the frame and overhanging arms C2, the adjustable shoulder-.support K, substantially as set forth.

5. In combination With the posts C, the kneepads G, hinged to said posts, and also being vertically and horizontally adjustable, in themanner substantially as set forth.
