To meet these conditions, according to the present invention the charging larry is made laterally extensible, so that it can be made to assume the two requisite positions for receiving and discharging the coal, and this is effected by mounting a subsidiary shuttle frame on wheels within the main frame or chassis, some of the charging hoppers being carried on the subsidiary frame, while the others occupy fixed positions on the main frame. By suitable disposition of the hoppers, when the subsidiary frame is moved out from the main chassis at right angles to the direction of the travel of the larry, the hoppers can be arranged to occupy their appropriate positions above the charging holes, whereupon the oven is charged in the usual manner.
After the charge is dropped the subsidiary shuttle frame is retracted, so that the larry can be moved back into the receiving position beneath the coal service bunker, with ample clearance between it and the bunker legs or side Walls.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention as applied to a larry having four hoppers, Fig. 1 being a front elevation of the car, Fig. 2 an end elevation and Fig. 3 a plan.
The main chassis A of the larry is mounted upon wheels B running on rails C extending 1ongitudinally along the top of the battery of coke ovens or the like. Rigidly attached to the main chassis are two hoppers D, D the inlet ends of which register with the respective outlets E, E of the main service bunker. The other two hoppers F, F are carried on a subsidiary shuttle frame G mounted on wheels H running on rails I extending transversely of and carried bythe main chassis A. This subsidiary shuttle frame is arranged to move upon the main chassis at right angles to the direction of travel of the larry, so that it can be moved outwardly from the inboard position in which it is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which inboard position the hoppers F, F are in register with the respective outlets J, J of the coal service bunker.
In the retracted position the hoppers are charged from the coal service bunker through the several outlet openings E, E, J, J.
From this position the larry is moved longitudinally of the battery to bring the hoppers transversely into line with one set of the charging holes K, K and L, L of the battery of coke ovens. The subsidiary shuttle frame G is then movedlaterally outwards to bring the hoppers F, F into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, in which these hoppers are in register respectively with the charging holes L, L. After the charge is dropped the subsidiary shuttle frame G is moved back into the inboard position upon the main chassis, and the larry is thus enabled to move back to the coal bunker with ample clearance between the bunker legs.
It will be seen that separate driving motors R.
and S are provided for extending and retracting} the shuttle frame G and for driving the larry along the battery respectively. It is obvious therefore that the operation of extending or retracting the shuttle frame may be performed while the larry is in motion, so that the frame Any usual means are provided for operating the stirrers, drop sleeves and doors of the several hoppers, but in the case of the laterally movable hoppers telescopic connections are provided between these devices and the power means for operating them. For example, the shaft M for actuating the stirrers of the hoppers F, F is telescopically connected, by means of a sleeve N in which it slides, with the corresponding shaft M through which the stirrer of the nearest fixed hopper is actuated through appropriate gear by means of the stirrer motor 0. a
Similarly, there is a telescopic connection between the shaft P, which operates the drop sleeves Q of the laterallymovable hoppers F, F, and the shaft through which the drop sleeves of the fixed hoppers D, D are operated.
Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim:
1. In a charging apparatus for coke ovens and carbonizing retorts, a larry car comprising a main frame, at least one charging hopper mounted on the said frame, a subsidiary shuttle framemounted on and adapted to slide into and out of the said main frame, at least one charging hopper mounted on the said shuttle frame, and a service bunker for charging the said hoppers, which bunker will accommodate the said larry car only when the subsidiary frame is slidden into the main frame.
2. Charging apparatus for coke ovens and carbonizing retorts, comprising a larry car having one or more charging hoppers mounted in a fixed position on a main frame, a subsidiary shuttle frame mounted for movement into and out of the said main frame, and oneor more similar charging hoppers mounted on the said shuttle frame, a service bunker for charging the said hoppers which will only accommodate the said larry car when the said shuttle frame is in the'retracted position, and'charging inlets in the said ovens or retorts which register with the said charging hoppers on the shuttle frame when the said shut tle frame is in the extended position.
3. In charging apparatus for coke ovens and carbonizing retorts as claimed in claim 1, stirrers for the hoppers, drop sleeves on the hoppers registering with the charging inlets on the ovens or retorts, and slide mechanism for the outlets of the hoppers, actuating means for the stirrer, drop sleeve and slide mechanism for the fixed hopper, and telescopic connections between said actuating means and the stirrer, drop sleeve and slide mechanism of the hopper on the said shuttle frame.
4. Charging apparatus for coke-ovens and carbonizing retorts, comprising a larry car having one or more hoppers mounted in a fixed position on a main frame, a subsidiary shuttle frame mounted for movement into and out of the main frame of the larry car, and one or more similar charging hoppers mounted on the said shuttle frame, a service bunker which will only accommodate the said larry car when the said shuttle frame is in the retracted position, and charging inlets in the said ovens or retorts which register with the charging hopper on the shuttle frame when the said shuttle frame is in the extended position, driving means for the said larry car, and independent driving means for extending and retracting the said shuttle frame.
