(01. 135-28) A principal object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and efficient structure capable of being employed in the production of top notches and runners, particularly ina type of collapsible frame such as is shown in our pending application for patent for Umbrella. structures, filed July 9, 1932, SerialNo. 621,549, of which thisis a continuation in part.
An object, also, is to provide a structural form applicable to top notches and runners of an umbrella frame, wherein the top notches and runners are formed of a pair or more parts of sheet metal members suitable secured togethen'whereby the upper extremities of the bows will be securely hinged to the top notches; the lower extremities of the braces similarly hinged to the runners, the top notches arranged so that they may be supported stationarily on the pole, and the runners slidably held on therpole.
. Other and more detailed objects of invention will appear as the description progresses.
We have shown a preferred form of our invention in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of an umbrella frame embodying our improvements;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan of the same as viewed from the top of the frame;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the top notch on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is, a sectionalplan of the runner on line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section, in elevation, of the runner on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
An umbrella frame of a type to which our improvements are applicable, as shown in Fig. 1,
usually includes a central supportingpole I, a top notch 2 which is stationarily held on the upper end of the pole, ribs or bows 3 which are hingedly secured to the top notch 2 at their ,upper ends, a runner 4 which is slidable-on the pole I, and braces 5 which are securely hinged at their lower ends to the runner and at their upper ends to 'geats 6 which are fixed to the bows3. i
The pole I usually has a reduced upper end I which provides a shoulder against which the central portion of the top notch .2 abuts; said top notch being suitably secured to the pole for preventing movement thereof on the pole. The
0. top notch is formed of but two sheet metal members 8 and 9 which are concentrically mounted,
one upon the other, and permanently secured to-v gether, as hereinafter explained.
Member Bhas a central portion III with an aperture, II therein for. receiving the end I of the pole I, and a downwardly andoutwardlyilaring base portion I2 which is subdivided into;a plurality of uniform segments I3, I3, etc. by means of radially disposed slits I4, I4, etc. 'The outer periphery of member is formed by bonding the metal thereof downwardly at I5,xand finally inwardly at I6, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby providing a central aperture 11 in the portion I6. Member 9 has a flat body with a cen-- tral aperture I8, corresponding in size and DOSi-r tion to aperture II, and the periphery thereof is bent upwardly at I9. Members 8 and 9 are correspondingly slitted and they are assembled in such a manner that the inner flat portion of member 9 will be firmly heldagainst. the inner surface of the portion I2 of member 8 and the upper surface of the inwardly turned portion iii of member8; also the upwardly turned portion I9 of member 9 willnest snugly against the inner surface of the portion I5 of member'B. Thus h bearings are formed in each of the segments I2 of member 8 and the corresponding segments of member 9, and themembers 8 and 9 are permanently secured together by, die. forming. and assembling the members, as shown. The flat body portion of member rests upon the shoulder at the bottom of the end I of the pole, and a pin 2i may be extended through the end I of the pole immediately abovethe portion II! of member 8 for preventing the upward movement of the top notch on the pole.
The ribs or bows 3, 3, etc. are securely hing-ed to the top notch 2. in the following manner: Said bows have. upper. extremities 22 of flat cross sec-' tion-which carry pintles 23 fixed to the bows at central points and uniformly extended there.- from at opposite sides. The ends 22 of the bows are of a thickness to correspond to the width of and they are adapted to pivotally fit into the slits I4 at the periphery of the top notch 2. The extended ends of the pintles 23 seat in the bearings 20 formed on opposite sides of the slits I4.
The runner 4 comprises three membersfl, 25 and 26 which are die formed of sheet metal and die assembled, as in the case ,of top notch 2, for the purpose of permanently securing the members together. Member 24 is in the form of an elongated cylinder with a central opening therein to slidably fit the pole I, and has an external downwalfdly turnedfiange 28 at its upper extremity,.and a pair or more of outwardly projecting lugs 29 which are uniformly spaced downwardly from the flange 28. Members'25 and 26 of the runner 4-correspond, respectivelm'to the members Band. 9 ofthe top notch 2..
OFFI C IJI' Member 25 has an upwardly turned hub portion '30 which snugly fits the exterior of the sleeve 24 and the upper edge of said hub is tightly held between the flange 28 and the body of the sleeve, as shown in Fig. 5. Member 25 is bent outwardly from the hub 38 at 3|; thence downwardly at 32 and thence inwardly at 33. Member 26 has its fiat inner portion tightly engaging the inner side of portion 3!.of member 25 and its'periphery similarly" engages the inwardly bent portion 33 of member 25, thereby permanently securing the members 25 and 26 together.
The periphery 34 of member 26 is bent'upwardly and tightly engages the portion 32 of member 23. Thus bearings are provided inand between the members .25 and 26fto correspond 'to the "bearings 29 in the top notch structure. Members 25 and 26 are subdividedinto uniform-segments36, 86, etc. which are formed by radial slits 31,, and said slits are adapted to pivotally receive the flattened in :such :a manner that the :brace holding structure is confined between the flange 2B and the lugs :2 9,, thereby providing a substantially integral structure 1 i It be observed that we form :the top notches and the runners of substantially thesameiparts,

An umbrella structure comprising a support for thei frame members of the structure, said support consisting of a pair of coaxially mounted members having central apertures for receiving a pole and flanges therearound' with complemental segments separated by radial slits in which ends o f cer tain of the frame'memb'ers are adapted to pivotally seat, the segments on one of said members being bent over the segments on the other-member, for permanently locking the two members together and providing bearings afior the pintles of the-frame members therebetween;
