Description
April 29,1930. J. BURNETT 1,156,782
WIRE REEL Filed, March so. 1927 NNNNNN OR Patented Apr. 29, 1930 UNITED STATES HCE JAMES'EDGAR BURNETT, F IBEARDSTOWN, ILLINOIS WIRE REEL Application filed March 30, 1927. 'SeriaI No. 179,549.
This invention relates to a reel for wire and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a frame for the reel which can be taken apart to permit the reel to be removed therefrom, with means for taking one of the flanges off the reel to permit a coil of wire to be placed thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the removable parts of the device can be easily and quickly fastened in supporting position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to
be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying draw- 29 ings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the improved reel.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is a view showing the parts of the device in separated condition.
Figure 4 is a view of the removable flange for the reel. V 0 In these views,;A indicates a supporting frame for the reel and B indicates the reel or spool which is rotatably supported by the frame. As shown, both the frame and reel are formed of metal so that the device is of 5 light construction and can be easily carried from place to place. The frame comprises a base 1, the uprights 2 and 3 and the top cross piece 4. The lower ends of the uprights are bent inwardly at right angles with the bent end of the upright 2 riveted or otherwise fastened to the base, while the upright 3 is connected with the base by a hinge 5 which is connected with the outer face of the upright in such a manner that when the upright is in vertical position its bent lower end acts as a foot for engaging the base. The cross piece 4 is connected with the upright 2 by the hinge 6 and the other end of the cross piece is formed with a tongue 7 which is adapted to extend through a slot 8 in the upper end of the upright 3 in which it is held by a cotter pin 9. Thus the frame is held in assembled position to rotatably support the spool or reel B, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, but which may have its parts separated by removing the pin 9 and moving the upright 3 into a horizontal position so that the reel can be removed from the frame, as shown in Figure 3. The reel has one of its flanges 10 detachably connected with the body of the reel, the reel being provided with a pair of pintles 11, each pintle having a square inner part and a rounded outer part, the flange having a square hole therein to fit over the square part on which it is held by a pin 12 passing 6 through a hole in the square part. The rounded parts of the pintles engage round holes in the uprights 2 and 3. I
WVhen a coil of wire is to be placed on the reel, the pin 9 is withdrawn from the tongue 8 and the upright 3 moved outwardly and downwardly so that the reel can be removed from the frame. The flange 10 is then removed from the reel by pulling out the pin 12 and then the coil of wire is placed on the' body of the reel. The flange 10 is then replaced and the frame is then assembled again to rotatably support the reel, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the sev- 8 eral'parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising m a base, an upright secured thereto, a second upright hingedly connected with the base, a top piece hingedly connected with the upper end of one upright, means for detachably connecting the top piece with the upper end of the other upright, said uprights having holes therein, a reel having its pintles engaging the holes, each pintle having a square inner part, which forms a shoulder for bearing against the inner face of an upright, a stationary flange at one end of the reel, a removable flange at the other end thereof, said latter mentioned fiangelraving a square hole therein to receive the square part of a pintle and a pin passing through the square part for holding the flange in place.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
