3 Claims. (Cl. 262-28) This invention relates to mining apparatus and more particularly to improved. adjustable kerf. cutting mechanism for such an apparatus.
An object of this invention isto provide an improved coal mining apparatus. Another object is to provide an improved coal mining apparatus having improved adjustable kerf cutting mecha-' nism. A further object is to provide an im-' proved coal mining apparatus of the wheel mounted, track guided type adapted to operate from the mine trackway and having improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism whereby a horizontal kerf may be out at the level of the mine bottom outside and below the level of the mine trackway- A further object is to provide an improved coal mining apparatus of the so-called combined type having improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism adapted both for horizontal cutting and shearing. Still another object is to provide an improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism for a mining apparatus of the aforesaid character having improved adjustable kerfcutter supporting means whereby the kerf cutter may be positioned ,to cut a horizontal kerf at the level of the mine bottom outside and below the level of the mine trackwayand havingassociated therewith improved kerf cutter swinging means. Yet another object is to provide, in a mining apparatus of the aforesaid character,
improved kerf cutter swinging means capable of' effecting swinging of the kerf cutter ineither horizontal or vertical planes in an improved manner. These and other objects and advantages of this invention will, however, herein-- after more fully appear.

.Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional viewtaken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; i it In this illustrative embodiment of the invention there is shown a mining machine of the same general type as that disclosed in the patent to Morris P, Holmes, Patent No. 1,785,961, patented December 23, 1930 and having an improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism of the same general type as that disclosed in the copending application of Morris P, Holmes, Ser. No. 415,051, filed December 18, 1929, patented 0ctober 25, 1932, No. 1,384,693, with improvements incorporated therein, as hereinafter described. The
mining apparatus generally comprises. a truck frame I mounted on truck wheels 2 adapted to run along a mine trackway 3. Supported on the truck frame I within transverse bearing frames 4 and 5 for rotation about a longitudinally extending axis relative to the truck frame is a supportor body 6 carrying the improved adjustable kerf'cutting mechanism generally designated 1. Supported within the rotatable supportor frame 6 and arranged with its axis alined with the support axis is a horizontal motor 8, herein preferably of the reversible electric type, having its power shaft horizontally disposed and extending longitudinally of the apparatus. This motor 8 eifects drive of the truckwheel driving mechanism forpropelling the apparatus along the mine trackway, and the mechanism for rotating the supportfi about its axis relative to the truck frame, in the manner clearly described in the above mentionedHolmes patents, and as these mechanisms do not specifically enter into this invention, further description of the same herein is thought unnecessary.
, Now referring to the improved adjustable kerf cutting mechanism 1, it will be noted that supported on the forward end of the rotatable support 6 for rotation therewith is a cutterhead 9 having pivotally mounted, thereon a horizontally extending arm or extension frame l0 which in turn provides at its outer extremity a pivotal support for the kerf cutter II, the kerf cutter being swingable by power through improved connections to behereinafter described relative to the extension frame It] and with the extension frame about the extension frame pivot. The kerf cutter comprises a plane cutter bar l2 having mounted on its margin, for circulation thereabout, a cutter bit-carrying chain 13. The driving connections between the motor 8 and the cutterj chain l3 herein comprise, as shown in Fig. 4,
a shaft '14 alined with and driven by. the motor power shaft. Fixed to the shaft M'- is a spur pinion I5 meshing with a spur gear l6 fixed to a longitudinal shaft herein arranged parallel with'theshaft l4. Fixedto shaft I1 is a bevel pinion I8 meshing with a bevel gear 19 suitably journaled within the cutter head9, and thisbevel gear meshes with a bevel gear 23 fixed to a longitudinally extending horizontal shaft 2! herein suitably journaled within a bearing bracket 22 formed on the swingable extension frame i0. As shown, keyed to the shaft 2! is a spur gear 23 meshing with a spur gear 24 keyed to a horizontal shaft 25 having its axis extending radially from the axial line of the extension frame pivot and suitably journaled within the extension frame. Keyed to the forward end of the shaft 25 is a bevel pinion 2E meshing with a bevel gear 21 which is connectible by a sliding clutch 28 to a shaft 29 herein arranged with its axis coincident with the bar pivot axis and suitably journaled within the outer extremity of the swingable extension frame Ill. Keyed to the shaft 29 is a chain sprocket 313 which engages and drives the cutter chain l3 in a well known manner.
The mechanism for effecting swinging of the extension frame it about its axis relative to the cutter head 9 comprises a shaft 3i arranged with its axis coincident with the extension frame pivot and suitably journaled within the cutter head 9, as shown in Fig. 4. The hub of the bevel gear i9 is provided with clutch teeth $52 which are conneetible to the teeth of a sliding clutch mem ber 33 splined to the shaft 3i. This sliding clutch member is provided with suitable shifter mechanism including a pivoted shipper yoke It will thus be seen that when the clutch 33 is connected, the shaft 3i may be driven by the bevel gear E9 of the cutter chain driving mechanism. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, fixed to the shaft ill is a worm 35 meshing with a worm wheel 36 keyed to a horizontal shaft 3'5 herein arranged transversely of the cutter head and suitably journaled within the swingable extension frame ill. Journaled on the shaft 3? and connectible thereto by a multiple disc clutch 38 is a worm 39 meshing with a worm wheel 48. This worm wheel is journaled on a shaft 4| likewise suitably journaled within the extension frame iii and this worm wheel 40 is con'neetible to the shaft '5! by a sliding clutch 42. The shaft 4-! drives a spur pinion 43 meshing with the teeth of a large internal gear 44 journaled within the cutter head. Also rotatably mounted on the shaft 31 and connectible thereto by a multiple disc clutch 45 is a worm 46 similar to the worm 39, but having oppositely inclined teeth, meshing with a worm wheel 41' journaled on a shaft 48 in turn suitably journaled within the swingable extension frame l and the worm wheel 41 is connectible with the shaft 48 by a sliding clutch 59. Driven by the shaft 48 is a spur pinion f! likewise meshing with the teeth of the internal gear 44. As shown in Fig. 5, the clutches 38 and 45 are provided with suitable shipper mechanism including pivoted shipper yokcs 5i and 52 and an operating handle 53, while the sliding clutches 42 and 49 are provided with suitable shipper yokes 54 and 55 respectively having an operating handle 56. It will thus be seen that upon suitable application of the disc clutches 38, 45 and connection of clutches 42 and 49, the internal gear 44 may be driven in one direction or the other. It is accordingly evident that when the internal gear 54 is held against rotation relative to the extension frame H), the extension frame may be swung relative to the cutter head 9 in one direction or the other, and that when the disc clutches 38 and 45 are released and one of the clutches 42, 48 is connected, the extension frame is locked automatically by the self locking worm gearing of the swinging mechanism. When the clutches 38, 45
and clutches 42, 49 are all released, the extension frame is free to swing relative to the cutter head. As shown, the extension frame 16 is journaled for swinging movement within sleeve bearings 5'! and 58 carried by the cutter head frame, and the internal gear 44 is rotatably mounted in bearing sleeves 59 carried by the extension frame and held in position by a retaining ring 66 bolted to the cutter head frame. The means for holding the internal gear 44 against rotation relative to the cutter head frame may assume various forms, but in this instance comprises, as shown in Fig. 4, a spring pressed plunger lock 6| reciproeably mounted in a bore 622 formed in a boss integral with the retaining ring (it. The plunger lock 6| is adapted to enter apertures 63 formed in bosses formed around the periphery of a member 64 bolted to the internal gear 44. The lock 6| is held in looking position by a coiled spring 65 acting thereon, and is provided with a handle 86 for the release of the same. A projection 6'! is formed on the lock 6 l, and when the lock is pulled outwardly and then turned, the projection holds the lock in its released position. It will thus be seen that as the bore 62 is in registry with one of the apertures 63 the internal gear 44 may be locked positively to the cutter head frame, and when the lock is released may rotate freely relative to the cutter head frame. New referring to the improved mechanism for swinging the cutter bar !2 about its pivot relative to the extension frame I it will be noted that the member 84 secured to the internal gear id forms a bearing support for one end of the shaft SI and has clutch teeth 68 connectible by a sliding clutch 69 to clutch teeth ill formed on the hub of a sprocket "H rotatably supported on the shaft 35. The sliding clutch 69 is provided with suitable shifter mechanism including a pivoted shipper yoke 12 and an operating handle ?3. As shown in Fig. l, the sprocket 'II is connected by an endless chain 14 to a sprocket l5, herein formed integral with a cylindrical bearing support 76 for the cutter bar iii. The bearing mounting 16 for the cutter bar is journaled in a bearing sleeve 11 carried by the outer extremity of the extension frame I G, as illustrated. It will thus be seen that when the lock ill is in its released position and the internal gear as is free to rotate relative to the extension frame it) and the clutch 69 is connected, the sprocket "H may be driven by the internal gear 44 while the extension frame In remains stationary as regards swinging movement relative to the cutter head, and as a result, the cutter bar is swung about its pivot relative to the extension frame through the chain and sprocket connection l4, 15. It will also be evident that when the clutch 69 is released, and the internal gear 44 is held against rotation relativeto the cutter head frame, the extension frame may be swung about its pivot relative to the cutter head while the cutter bar is freely swingable relative to the extension frame. If desired, however, the cutter bar may be held against swinging movement relative to the extension frame during swinging of the latter about its pivot, by any suitable means, for instance by a spring pressed plunger lock 18 similar to the lock 6i and having a release handle 19 and adapted to enter apertures =80 formed in a flange 8! formed integral with the bearing mounting 76 for the kerf cutter. The lock i8 is held released in the same manner as the lock (Si, by a projection 82. In a miningapparatus,-a-portable base and kerf cutting mechanism mounted on said base including a horizontal arm pivotally mounted on said base, a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on the outer extremity of said arm, and mechanism for alternatively swinging said arm relative to said base and said kerf cutter relative to said am in eluding a gear journaled on said arm and rotatable relative thereto during and to effect kerf butter swingfmeans forholding said gear stationaryrelative to said base to effect swinging movement of saidarm, and means for rotating said gear in either of opposite directions without reversing said kerf cutter.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, an arm pivotally mounted on said frame to swing relative thereto, a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on the outer extremity of said arm to swing relative thereto about an axis parallel to the arm axis, and mechanism for swinging said arm relative to said frame and said'kerf cutter relative to said arm including a driving member rotatable about an axis coincident with the arm pivot axis, means for connecting said kerf cutter to said member for swing thereby, said means being released during swinging of said arm, and means for locking said member against rotation during arm swing.

In a mining apparatus, a frame, an arm pivotally mounted on said frame to swing relative thereto, a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on the outer extremity of said arm to swing relative thereto about an axis parallel to the arm axis, and mechanism for swinging said arm relative to said frame and said kerf cutter relative to said armincluding a driving element rotatable about an axis coincident with the arm pivot axis, means for connecting said kerf cutter to said element for swing thereby, said means being released during swinging of said arm, and means for locking said element against rotation during arm swing, said element being freely rotatable relative to said arm during; swing of the kerf cutter, and means for locking. said arm' against swinging movement relative to said frame during kerf cutter swing.
