Iilfyinvention relates to mining apparatus.
It has for its object' to provide an improved mining apparatus. A further object of my invention is to provide animproved machine of the so-called universal type, adapted to cut a kerf atany one of a variety of angles .in the face. or in a plurality of be observed that I have shown a mining planes relative to the bottom. Also, it will be observed that the bar is swung and the cuttmg mechanism thereon is driven from amotor 26 carried in the frame 1. Herein the armature shaft 27 of this motor is longitudinally disposed and carries on its front end a bevel pinion 28 meshing with a larger bevel pinion 29 on a short vertically disposed shaft 30 journaled in suitable hearings in the head and carrying a spur gear31 on its lower end. This gear 31 in turn meshes with a larger cooperating gear 32. which is formed on and substantially midway between the ends of an elongated-sleeve member 33 freely rotatable on a longer vertical shaft 34 suitably journailed on the head 25 and disposed in front of'the shaft 30. This sleeve 33, as shown, extends upward from the gear 32 and downward therefrom, the same herein acting as a driving element forboth the cutting mechanism and the bar swinging mechanism.
Referring first to the'cutter chain driving mechanism, it will be noted that herein the lower end of this sleeve is journaled in the head 25 and has operatively connected thereto, as through ausual clutch 35 (not shown conne'cted, i
in detail), a cutter chain driving sprocket 36 drivingthe cutter chain 20 in the usual manner Referring now to the bar swinging-mechanism, it willbe observed that the upper end of the sleeve is also similarly journ'aled in the head 25 and is operatively through differential driving mechanism, with the. upper end of the shaft 34. As this differential driving mechanism per se forms, no part of my present invention and is described and claimed in my copendin-g application, Serial No. 260,708, filed 'Novpl, 1918, a detaildescription of the same hereinseems unnecessary other than to say that the same includes an eccentric 37 rotatable with the upper end 38 of the sleeve and driving a differential gear 39, which meshes with cooperating internal gears 40 and 41 of different diameter, of which the gear 40 is controlled by a friction clutch 42, while the connection of the two gears is controlled by friction clutch 43, the two clutches being controlled by a controlling hand wheel 44.
lhus the gear 40 may be locked to the casing or the two gears'40 and 41 locked together 7 in. such a manner as,through the fixing of the latter gear, by a spline 45 to the upper end of the shaft 34, to rotate that shaft slowly or rapidly in opposite directions. As shown,the shaft 34 carrieson its lower end a pinion 46 meshing with an idler pinion 47, which in. turn meshes with a larger gear 48 carried on the lower end of a stub shaft 49 or. afast or moving speed, as desired, the
cutting mechanism, i. e. the cutter chain 20, being controlled independently through the clutch 35 so that that mechanism may be thrown out of operation whenever desired.
As shown, it will also be noted that areversble controller 52 for the motor 26 is provided between the front end of the frame 1 and the controlling mechanism, including the controlling member 44, so that the controller operating means 53 may be conven- .ieutly located relative to the member 44.
Operatively connected to the frame 1 and disposed between the latter and the frame 2, is my improved mechanism for rotating the entire frame 1 relative to its supporting frame 2. As shown in Fig. 6, the frame 1 is provided with a round front end member 54 rotatably mounted in suitable arcuate bearings 55 carried on upstanding members 56 provided on oppositesides of the front end of the frame 2. As shown, this member 54 is provided with inwardly disposed extensions 57 providing journals 58 for longitudinally disposed supporting members 59, herein in the form of feed members extending longitudinally beyond theopposite ends of the frame 1. Herein it will also be ob served that these members 59 are fixed, as by nuts 60 threaded on their rear ends,to a
bearing 62 formed on an upstanding supturning frame or wheel 61, which is itself rotatable on a horizontal axis on a Silllltblti port 63 at the rear of the frame 2. Thus it will be noted that the frame 1 is supported by the bearings 55 andthe bearing 62 at its opposite ends and may turn about a horizontal axis and thereby turn the cutting mechanism relative to the face. It will also be observed that the support 63 is provided with a flange 64 and a cooperating remov able clamping plate 65 attached to it by screws 66 in such amanner as to hold the parts in their desired relation. Also, it will be observed that in the flange 64 suitable apertures are provided so that one or more locking pins 67 may passtherethrough and into corresponding apertures formed in the member 61 to lock the latter in any desired angular posit-ion. Attention is also directed to the fact that the member 61 is provided with aplurality of radially disposed open vings 68 adapted to receive a baror thelike so that the member 62 and the connected im'ning machine mechanism and cutter bar may, when the pins 67 are released, be
manually turned angularly to the, desired position.
Operatively connected to the motor 26and also preferably driven from therea'r end of the armature shaft, is my improved mechanism for feeding, the machine frame ,1 during cuttlng, Thls 'mechamsm, as shown 111 Fig 5, includes a worm 69 carried on the rear end of the-armature shaft 27 and meshing with a, worm gear 70 operatively con nectible through; friction clutch elements combined journal and: worm members 76' 1 which are rotatable in suitable bearings v on the rear end of the frame lfand normally rotate freely on the shaft and are connectible therewith at will by usual clutch mechanisms 77 including members splined on the ends of the shaft. These wormmembers 7 6 initurn mesh with worm gears 78 (Fig. freely rotatable on rear threaded sleeve members79 forming continuations of sleeve members enclosingthe rear ends of threaded portions 80 formed on the members 59 and extending rearwardzthereon from points adjacent the members 57. Each of these gears 78 is in turn provided, with a clutchface 81 engageable with a reciprocable double-ended clutch member82 splined to the sleeve 79. Also, it will be observed that reciprocable double-ended clutch members 83 are splined on the members 59 adjacent the member 61, and are adaptedto engage with cooperating clutch teeth 84 formed on that member when in one position. that when the clutch member-82 isconnected to the clutch teeth 81 and the clutch member 83 is connected to the clutch teeth 8 l,-the sleeve 80 will be fed bodily forward to feed the frame 1 with a friction controlled feeding" movement relative to the frame 2' and the work at a slow orcutt-ing speed.
Also operatively connectedto the motor and herein similarly driven from the shaft 74, is my improved mechanism'for feeding the machine frame in the opposite direction, i.,e., from the work. This mechanism, as shown, includes a pinion85, (Fig; .5) preferably formed" integral with the sleeve 73 and constantly meshing with a gear 86 (F ig. 3) carried on a lower transverse shaft87 suitably journaled in the frame and having bevel gears 88 on its opposite ends meshing with bevel gears 89 rotatable on the sleeves 79 and dispos'ed'between the members 82 and 88' and having clutch teeth 91and 92 engageable by the clutch teeth on the inner ends of the members 82 and-83; 1 Thus, it

viously,- assume various forms. Herein,
they are preferably formed integral with themembers 80, drills, herein in the form of rotary members or angers 93, being formed onthe front ends of the members 59 and adapteditoenter the faceandthereby enable the members 59 to be supported by the face and cooperate with the truck-in sup-i porting the machine as it is moved toward or from the work.v As shown, the members 59 and their drills arerotated by power and fed forward relative to the machine frame 1 and within the sleeves 79, bythe threaded connections between the parts when, the clutch 83, is connected with the clutch teeth, 91:. As a; result, when the also-be noted that in order to limit the drilling movement; of the drills and the forward movement of the machine frame on the members 59, and also to operatively connect the'front ends of the members 59, a spanner 9a, is loosely mounted on'the-outer ends of'themembers 59 and held in adjusted position relative thereto by clamping rings 95 located on opposite sides of the spanner ends and adapted tov be held in position by screws 96. It will, also be noted that the desired; rigidity of the support is further increased by the provision of a second spanner 97 adjacent the front end of the machine frame 1 and: herein formed integral with neris not only pushed forward by the machine as the latter moves forward, but is retracted. by and withthe" machine.v
In the operation of'my' improved con struction, the machine is run into the-room or entry, ongits truck.' The truck is then stopped, and the machine rotating, swivelmg, or tilting, means are then adjusted (Figs. 8, 9 as necessary in order to direct the bar into the desired plane of operation. By these adjusting means'it will be noted that the bar may be disposed either vertically or at substantially any desired angle to the vertical, and at any desired angle with respect to the horizontal, depending the cutter bar is tirst swung laterally to its sumping position, then through the slow feed mechanism hereinabove described the mac iine frame is fed forward on the truck toforce the bar-intothe coal; then the bar is swung laterally and, last, by reversing the feed the frameis retracted on the truck, herein through the use of my improved fast reverse feed mechanism. lVhen the cut has thus been made and .the machine frame 1 has been thus returned to its normal. or retracted position, and the drilling anemhere" are withdrawn from the face, the machine is transported toanother place.
As also illustrated in Fig. 9, it will be evident that when desired my improved'machine-may be similarly utilized in cutting room necks orthe like, the machine and drills then first being swiveled' into position, herein at right angles to the truck, and the drills then being moved toward the face and relative to the truck byimproved mechanism. As shown, this mechanismincludes extensions 104 fixed on the rear ends of the drills and a crosshead 105 secured thereto by nuts 106 and adjustable bodily therewith by means of an adjusting screw 107 operable by a hand wheel 108 and threaded into the rear end oi? the support63. Thus it will be observed that when the machine and drills are swivcledinto position, the drills may be fed forward and into the face by a manual rotation of the hand wheel 108, to produce the same result as when the truck is fed forward. -Here it will also be noted that this feedingmechanism will in no way interfere with the operation of the power feed for thedrills, heretotore'described, the construction being such that these feeding mechanisms may be selectively used as occa sion requires. i
As a result of my improved construction, it will be observed that not only may the cutter bar be swung in the various positions described in my copending application mentioned above, but the machine frame may be adjusted bodily through its rotating mechanism, its swivel mechanism, and its tilting mechanism, in such a manner as to will, l1owever,- be' clearly apparent "to those skilled in the art. I

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent'is: I

3. In a mining apparatus, a support, a mining machine thereon having cutting mechanism, and means adapted to cause a portion of the weight of said machine to be borne by a face including a plurality of drilling means relative to which said machine is longitudinally movable. i

In amining apparatus, a support, a mining machine thereon having a swinging cutter bar, and means for supporting said machine during cutting either through swinging or bodily movement of saidbar including a plurality of laterally spaced drilling means for supporting said'machine on a face both beforeand during cutting.
