This invention relates to miningapparatus, and more partlcularly to coal mining apparatus of the wheel mountedbottom cutting type especially adapted for cutting horizontal kerfs at or near the level of the mine bottom outside the mine trackway. 1

A still further object is to provide in, a mining apparatus of the aforesaid type improved mechanism fortlltlng the kerf cutting mechanism about a transverse axis to vary the angle of the kerf cutter relative to the horitransport speed. These and other objects of this invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear in the course of the follow ing description and as more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Supported by the tiltable machine body 5 is a motor 9 herein preferably of the reversi ble electric type having an armature shaft 10 (Fig. 6) extending longitudinally of the machine body. This armature shaft has secured thereto as by a key 11 a coupling member 12 which is in turn connected by interlocking teeth 13 to a coupling member 14 fixed to a shaft 15 alined with the motor armature shaft. The shaft -15d-rives, as hereinafter described, the improved kerf cutting mechanism, while a spur gear 16' integral with the coupling member 12 drives the inn proved slow speed propulsion mechanism for the apparatus.
Now referring to the improved kerf cutting mechanism 6, it will be noted that secunedas by screws 17 to the front end of the machine body is a rigid cutter carrying head 18. This cutter head is provided with vertieal guideways 19 within which there are slidably mounted for vertical reciprocatory movement guides 20 rigidly secured as by screws 21 to an adjustable cutter supporting frame 22. Swiveliymounted on this adjustable frame 22 for swinging movement about a vertical axis is a laterally projecting frame or supporting arm 23 which herein forms an offset pivotal mounting for the. kerf cutter. Pivotally' mounted on the outer endof this arm 23- is a-nvelongated plane cutter bar 24' carrying on its margin an endless cutter bit carrying cutter chain 25. The improved offset pivotal mounting for the cutter bar 24 includes a circular frame 26 supporting the cutter bar and having a radial flange 27 guided within an annular guideway formed by the lower surface of the supporting arm 23sand an annular thrust plate 28 secured as by screws 29 to the bottom: of the. arm 23.
This-thrust plate hasaninwardly projecting flange 30 underlying the flange 27, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Formed integral with the frame 26 supporting the cutter bar is a hub portion 31 mounted for rotative movement on abearing-sleeve 32in turn supported by an annular hub 33 depending from the arm 23 at the outer end thereof. The. means for looking' the cutter bar 24 in its different angular positions relative to thearm 23 herein in cludes-a releasable locking pin 34 (Figs. 2 and 3)' receivable in any one of a series of apertures 35 formed in a radial flange 36integral with thearm 23. When the cutter bar-is suitably positioned relative to the supporting arm, the locking pin 34 is inserted in the properaperture and into engagement with a registering aperture or notch 37 formed invthe frame 26' supporting the cutter bar. It: will thus be seen. that the cutter bar 24 may be swung relative to the supporting arm 23 and rigidly locked thereto in its different angular positions by means of the locking pin 34.
The improved mechanism for driving the cutter chain 25, for swinging the cutter supporting arm 23 about its pivotal axis, and for adjusting the cutter bar into different parallel planes, will now be described. As shown in Fig. 3 secured as by a key 40 to the forward end of the sh-aft15- is a bevel pinion 41 having its hub portion journaled within an antifriction bearing 42 carried by the cutter head frame; The bevel pinion 41 meshes with a large bevel gear 43 enclosed within the cutter head frame and rigidly secured as by screws 44 toa nut element 45. Coaxial with this nutelement is a splined sleeve 46 which at its upper end is keyed or otherwise secured to a sleeve member 46. This sleeve member is connectible altern ativcly by a sliding clutch device 47 to a stationary member 48 rigidly secured to the cutter head frame 18 or to the nut member 45. If desired, the member 48 may be connected to the cutter head frame by a yicldable clutch device or slip friction as described in a copending application to one C. G. Boudette, Serial No. 694,222, filed Feb. 21 1924, now matured into Patent No. 1.819,- 69 7, patented Aug. 18, 1931. Suitable clutch operating mechanism including a pivoted shipper yoke 49 engaging a shiftable clutch element 50 of the clutch device and a lever 51 isprovided for actuating clutch device 4.7 (see Figs. 1 and 2). Threadedly engaging the nut 45is a. vertical screw shaft 52 having longitudinal splineways 53 therein cooperating with splines 54 upon the sleeve member 46.. This screw shaft52 has a collar 55 there on engaging a suitable combined bearing and supporting means 56 for the adjustable cutter supporting frame 22 and the mechanism supported thereby so that the screw shaft 52 is adapted to effect vertical adjustment of the frame 22 relative to the guideways 19 on the cutter head to position the cutter bar into different parallel horizontal planes. It will thus be seen that when the clutch device 47 is moved into a position to connect the sleeve 46 to the stationary member 48, the screw shaft 52, due to its splined engagement with the sleeve 46, is held against rotation and. that upon rotation of the nut member 45 the screw sh aft 52 is moved axially to effect vertical adjustment of the cutter supporting frame 22. It will also be noted that when the clutch device 47 is shifted into its opposite position connecting the sleeve 46 to the bevel gear l3, the sleeve 46 and screw shaft 52 may be rotated together in fixed angular relation without axial adjustment of the shaft, and at th at time the screw shaft acts as a transmission shaft for effecting drive of the cutter chain 25' and the bar swinging mechanism. The driving connections between the shaft 52 and the cutter chain include: a: clutch member 57 fixed as by a key 58 to the shaft 52 and co n tion by means of a suitable screw and washer connection 63. The drive sprocket 62 drives through an endless chain connection 64 enclosed within the supporting arm 23 achain sprocket 6.5 suitably fixed to. a vertical shaft 66 carried at the outer. end of the arm 22, as shown in Fig. 3. Thisshaft is journalled in anti-friction bearings 67 carried by the sup; porting arm 23 and has suitably fixed thereto at its lower enda drive sprocket 68 which engages and drives the endless cutter chain25. The improved mechanism for effecting pivotal movement of the cutter supporting arm 23' about its pivotal axis includes a spur gear 7 0 fixed as by a key 71 to the clutch member 57 which is in turn secured to the shaft 52. As shown in Fig. 5., the spur gear meshes with spur gears 72 and 73. Referring more partlcularly to the mechanism for effecting swinging movement of the cutter supporting arm 23 at a relatively slow cutting speed, it will be observed that rotatable with the spur gear 72 is a worm 7 Lmesh1ng with a slow speed worm.wheel75. This worm wheel is connectible by a manually controllable friction clutch 76 of a-usual design to a transverse shaft 77 suitably journaled within the adjustable frame 22. This transverse shaft has suitably fixed thereto intermediate its ends a worm 78 meshing with a worm wheel 79 suitably journaled within the fra1ne.22.-, This worm wheel is secured as by a key, as shown in Fig. 3, to a vertical shaft. 80 having formed integral therewith a spur pinion 81. This spur pinion meshes with the teeth of an internal gear 82 rigidly secured as by screws 83 to the cutter, supporting arm 23. Secured as by screws 84 to. the adjustable frame 22 is an annular member or thrust washer 85 which together with an annular shoulder 86 upon the frame 22 provides a circular guideway for the large internalgear 82 to which the cutter supporting arm .23 is secured. The
fast speed swinging means for the cutter supporting arm 23 includes a worm 87 rotatable with the spur gear 73 and meshing with a fast speed worm wheel 88 having its teeth oppositely inclined from and of greater inclination than the teeth of the worm wheel 75. This worm wheel 88 is operative upon application of a manually controllable friction clutch 89, similar to the clutch 76, to drive the shaft 77 at arelatively fast speed in a directionopposite from the slow speed drive. It will thus be seen that upon application of one or the otherof. the friction clutches 76 and 89, the cutter bar supporting arm 23 togetherwith the cutter bar supported thereby 'may be swung at a relativelyhigh positioning speed in one direction and at a relatively slow cutting speed intheopposite direction. As the specific driving mechanism for the cutter chain and the specific mechanisms for adjusting the cutter bar into different parallel planes and for swinging the cutter bar are clearly described in'a copending application to one MorrisP. The mechanism 8 for swinging'the tiltable machine body 5 about its transverse axis relative to thetruck frame is also clearly described in the above mentioned Holmes application and herein includes a transverse shaft 90 rotatably mounted on the truck frame and 7 having secured thereto a pair of similar. arms 91 (see Fig. 9) which carry at their free ends rollers92. These rollers are arranged, in-slots or guideways93 formed in members 94: which are secured to the bottom of the machine body.. It willbe noted that when themachine body is in its horizontal position the arms'91 are not vertical but inclined so that on rotative movement of the shaft 90 the resultant swinging of the arms 91 may cause tilting movement of the machine body relative to the truck frame in either direction about the transverse axis 4. The truck propelling mechanism 7 includes a. spur gear 101 meshing with. the" spur gear 10 secured to the'coupling member 12 (see Figs. 4t and 6) and the gear 101 is rigidly fixed asby a 102 to a horizontal, longitudinally extending shaft 103. This shaft 103is suitably journalcd within the machine body and has fixed thereto at its'forward' end a bevel pinion 104 meshing withreversebevels 105, 106. These reverse bevels are alternatively connectible by friction clutches 107 and 108 ofa usual designto a transverse shaft ,109 suitably journaled-Within themachine body. 1101 meshing with a worm wheel 111 (see also Fig. 7) suitably secured as by a key to a. longitudinally extending horizontal shaft 112 suitably journaled in the machine body. This shaft 112 has suitably fixed theretoa worm 113 meshing with a worm wheel 114 suitably journaled on a transverse shaft 115 in turn journaled within the machine body. This worm wheel 114 is at will connectible to or releasable from the shaft 115 by a shiftable clutch device 116 having suitable operating mechanism including a handle 117 (see Figs. 1 and 2). Secured to the outer end of the shaft 115 is a chain sprocket 118 connectible by an endless chain connection 119 to a chain sprocket 120 suitably fixed in: the rear truck axle. The front and rear truck axles are connected in driving relation. by means of a chain and sprocket connection 121. As best shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the chain 119 passes around a sprocket 122 which is adjustable in positions tovary the tension of the chain as the machine body is tilted relative to the truck frame. This sprocket 122 is carried, as shown in Fig. 9, by an arm 123 suitably fixed to the shaft 90 and it will be evident that if this shaft is rotated to effect tilting movement of the machine body relative to the truck frame, the position ofthe sprocket 122 is changed, thereby varying the tension of the drive chain 119 duringsuoh tilting movement. The chain 119 also passes around a sprocket 124 which, when connected in driving relationwith the motor as hereinafter described, constitutes a fast speed driving element for the truck wheels. From the foregoing description it is evident that when one or the other of the friction clutches 107, 108 is applied the truck wheels may be driven from: the motor 9 through spur gearing 16, 101,. bevel gear 104, one or the other of the reverse bevels 105, 106, worm gearing 110, 111, 113 and 114, and the chain and sprocket connections 118, 119 and 120 (it being understood that the clutch device 116 is positioned to connect the worm wheel 114 to the shaft 115 at that time) at a relatively slow speed either forwardly or rearwardly along the mine trackway.
The mechanism for effecting propulsion of the apparatus along the mine trackway at a relatively high transport speed includes a spur pinion 125 (see Fig. 8) suitably fixed to the rear end of the armature shaft 10. This spur pinion meshes with a spur gear 126 which drives a worm 127 meshing with a worm wheel 128. This worm wheel is connectible' by a manually operable friction clutch device 129 to a transverse shaft 130 to which. the chain sprocket 124 is secured. It will thus be seen that when the clutches 107, 108; and 116 are released and the clutch device 129 is applied, the truck wheels may be driven fnomthe motor through the spur gearing 125, 126, worm gearing 1'27, 128, transverse shaft 130 and the chain and sprocket connection 124, 119', 120, to eifect propulsion of the mining apparatus forwardly along the mine trackway at a relatively high speed. Upon reversal of the motor 9 the truck Wheels may be driven at a relatively high speed in the opposite direction.
A frictional braking device 131 of a usual design is provided for controlling movement of the apparatus when moving along an inclined trackway and for holding the truck wheels against rotation at certain times during the cutting operation, and herein includes a brake drum 132 secured to the rear axle of the truck and a cooperating brakeband 133. This brake band is controlled by means of a suitable lever mechanism 134 connected through a pull rod 135 to a suitable operating handle 136 (see Fig. 1).
The general mode of operation of the improved mining apparatus will now be described. The apparatus is propelled about the mine at a relatively high transport speed under the control of the friction clutch device 129. When the working face is reached and it is desired to insert a horizontal cut at the base of the mine wall at or near the level of the mine bottom, the operator applies the fast speed controlling friction clutch 89, thereby effecting horizontal swinging movement of'the cutter bar supporting arm laterally from its central position shown in Fig. 2. As the cutter bar supporting arm 23 is swung laterally the locking pin 34 is re leased, unlocking the cutter bar from the supporting arm 23 and when the outer end of the cutter bar engages the right hand rib, swinging movement of the supporting arm 23 is continued until the ba'rpivot is positioned outside the mine traekway, the parts assuming the position at A indicated in full lines in Fig. 10. When the parts are thus disposed, the cutter bar 24 is again rigidly locked to the supporting arm 23 by the locking pin 34. The clutch device 47 is then shifted upwardly into a position to connect the sleeve 46 to the stationary member 48 and as a result the sleeve 46 is held against rotation. As the nut 45 is rotated relative to the non rotatable screw shaft 52 the latter is fed axially downwardly, thereby lowering the adj ustable frame 22 relative to the guideways 19. When the cutter bar 24 is positioned in a plane at or near the level of the mine bottom, the clutch device 47 is shifted downwardly to release the sleeve 46 from the stationary member 48 and to connect the sleeve 46 to the nut member45. The parts 45, 46, and 52 then rotate-together at the same angular rate without any axial adjustment of the screw shaft 52. The operator then shifts the clutch member 59 to a position to connect the chain sprocket 62 to the clutch member 57 keyed to the lower end of the screw shaft 52, thereby effecting circulation ofthe cutterchain 25 about the margin ofthe cutterbar through the chain and sprocket connection 62, 64,565
propelled bodily forwardly along the mine trackway at a cutting speed, thereby sumping the cutter bar 24 beneath the mine wall until it assumes the dotted line position indicated at B in Fig. 10. The frictional braking device 131', 182 is then set and the truck wheels are held against rotation. The locking pin 34 is then released and the slow speed clutch? 6 applied, thereby elfecting swinging movement of the cuttersupporting arm 23 laterally from right to left until the arm and cutter barassume'an alin-ed position, thecutt-er bar then again being rigidly lockedrto the supporting arm'23 by the locking pin 34. The cutter supporting arm 23 and the cutter bar are then swung simultaneously aboutthe pivotal axis of the supporting arm from right to left across the coalface thereby effecting a transverse cut. When the outer end of the cutter bar reaches the left hand rib, the lock ingpin 34 is again released and upon continued swinging movement of the supportingarm 23 the parts assume the position indicated at C in Fig. 10, the cutter bar thereafter being rigidly lockedto the supporting arm by the locking pin. "The frictional brak ing device 131, 132 is then released and the slow speed truck wheelv controlling friction 107 is applied and upon connection of the clutch device 116 the apparatus is propelled bodily rearwardly 'alongthe mine trackway at a cutting speed, thereby withdrawing the cutter bar from the-working face of the coal to the position indicated at D in Fig. 10. The cutter chain drive controlling clutch 59 is then shifted downwardly-to a position to disconnect the cutter chain from the screw shaft 52. The motor 9 is then reversed and the clutch device 47 shifted to again connectthe sleeve 46 tothe stationary member 48 and as a result the cutter bar and cutterbar support 22 are moved upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1 with the cutter bar a substantial distance above the top of the trackway,
the clutch device 47 thereafter being released. If'it is desired to make 13 ahorizontal cutabove the top of the mine trackway, the cutter bar 24is rigidly locked by the pin 34 in alinement with the supporting arm 23 and the arm and bar are maintained in alinement throughout the cutting operation. The friction clutch 89 is then applied and the supporting arm and cutter bar are swung laterally-at a relatively fast bar positioning speed toaposition adjacent the right hand rib, the clutch 89 thereafter being released. The slow truck drive'controlling clutch 108 is then applied and the apparatus propelled bodily forward lalong themine trackway at a cutting speed, thereby sumping the cutter bar within the coal, the clutch 108 thereafter being released. The operator then applies the friction clutch 76 and the cutter bar and supporting arm are swung laterally from right to left at a relatively slow'cutting speed to a positionadj acent the left hand rib, the clutch 76 thereafter being released. If it is desired to change the angular position of the cutter bar relative to the horizontal, this may be accomplished simply by operating the ratchet and pawl mechanism 100 thereby rotating the nut 99 to effect axial adjustment of the screw 96 and as a result the shaft '90 is rotated, swinging the arms 91 and moving the rollers 92 within the guideways93.
' As a-result of this invention itiwill be noted that an improved coal mining apparatus is provided having improved kerf cutting mechanism including aniimprove'd offset' pivotal mounting for the cutter bar whereby the latter may be positioned to cut at the level of the mine bottom outsidethc mine trackway. Itwill further be notedthat' an improved coal mining apparatus of the wheel mounted, bottom cutting type is prosaid cutter bar to aposition at ornear' the 'level of themine bottom, thereby enabling the cutting mechanism to extend the mine bottom. It will further be noted that by the improved arrangement provided herein the cutter bar may be easily and quickly positioned with its pivot outside the mine track way and thereafter adjusted to a position at V ornear the level of the minebottom, the
improved adjusting and positioning mechanismbeing of arelatively simple and rugged "a mining machineiof standard design. These and other uses and advantages of the. 11nproved'mining apparatus will .be clearly apparent to those skilled in this art.
XVhile there is in this application specifically described one form which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and :that the mventlon may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the-scope of the appended claims.

47. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine traclrway, a
second support mounted on the forward end of said first support for rectilinear adjustment vertically relative thereto, motor operated devices for adjusting said second support relative to said first support, an arm mounted on said second support to swing horizontally relative thereto about a vertical axis in front'ofthe axes of the front support wheels, said arm being swingable to a position wherein it projects beyond the side of the mine trackway, a cutter bar pivotally mounted at the outer extremity of said arm for swinging movement relative thereto about a parallel axis, and motor operated devices for swinging said arm relative to said second support.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled support adapted to run along a mine trackway, a second support mounted on said first support for adjustmentrelative thereto, a third support mounted on said second support at the forward end thereof for rectilinear adjustment relative to said second support, motor operated devices for adjusting said third support relative to said second support, an arm mounted on said third support to swing horizontally relative thereto about a vertical axis, said arm being swingable to a position wherein it projects beyond the side of the mine trackway, a cutter bar pivotally mounted at the outer extremity of said arm for swinging movement relative thereto about a parallel axis, and motor operated devices for swinging said arm relative to said third support.
49. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck adapted to travel along a mine trackway, a support on said truck overhanging the front end of said truck, a horizontally swingable arm pivotally mounted on said overhanging support for horizontal swinging relative thereto about a vertical axis in advance of the front truck wheels, a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on the outer extremity of said arm for free swingingmovement relative thereto, and releasable means for locking said kerf cutter in different predetermined positions relative to said arm.
50. In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck adapted to travel along a mine trackway, a support on said truck overhanging the front end of said truck, a horizontally swing-able arm pivotally mounted on said overhanging support, a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on the outer extremity of said arm for free swinging movement relative thereto, releasable means for locking said kerf cutter in different predetermined positions relative to said arm, and mechanism for adjusting said arm and kerf cutter in a vertical direction to position said kerf cutter to cut a kerf at the level of the mine bottom outside and below the level of the mine traokway.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck adapted to travel along a mine trackway, a support thereon adjustable in a vertical direction relative to the 'trackway and overhanging the front end of said truck, an arm pivotally mounted on the overhanging portion of said support for horizontal swinging movement relative thereto about a vertical axis in advance of the axes of the forward truck wheels, and a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on the outer extremity of said arm for horizontal swinging movement relative thereto, said arm being swingable laterally to position said kerf cutter with its pivot outside the trackWay.
52. In a mining apparatus, a Wheeled truck adapted to travel along a mine track- Way, a support thereon adjustable in a vertical direction relative to the trackway and overhanging the front end of said truck, an arm pivotally mountedon the'overhanging portion of said support for horizontalswinging movement relative thereto about a vertical axis in advance of the axes of the for- Ward truck Wheels, a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on the outer extremity of said arm for horizontal swinging movement relative thereto, said arm being swingable laterally to position said kerf icutter with its pivot outside the trackWay and means for adjusting said support in aforesaid vertical direction to position'said kerfcutter to cut a kerf at the level of the mine bottom outside and below the level of the mine traokway.
