The portion I9 also extends slightly above the upper edge of the beam I1 and is provided with an inturned ilange 25 secured to the under side of an actuating member 26 which, when the cover plate I4 is in closed position, will be ilush with the upper surface thereof and will be arranged in a recess formed in the plate I4 adjacent the front side of the machine. When the cover plate I4 is in fully closed position stop lugs `2I secured to the under side of the plate will engage beneath the needle plate II andV form definite stops insuring the proper position of the cover plate I4 in the closed position. The actuating member 26 will also be in a horizontal Yposition 'flush with the cover plate I4, while the upwardly extending tab 23, at the end of the portion 22 of the beam I'I, will be in engagement with the under side of the cover plate at a point slightly past the vertical plane including the longitudinal center line of the pivots 20 for the portions I8 and I9 of the strip and on the pDQsite side of the transverse center line of the cover plate from the axis of the trunnions I6. .This engagement between the tab 23 and the coverv plate I4 will hold the cover plate in its-upper or closed position andvit will beseen that any vdownward pressure exerted upon the plate I4 will be ineffective to open the plate and will press upon the tab v23 in a downward direction lying substantially in the vertical center line of the pivots 20.
When it is desired to open the cover plate I4 to aiord access tothe shuttle, the operator merely presses downwardly on the right hand end (as,
viewed in the drawing) of the actuating member 26 with the result that the strip I'I is swung in,
a clockwise direction on its pivot and the tab 23 is moved to the opposite side of thevertical plane of thev longitudinal center line of the pivots 20` to an off-center position, whereupon 'the'` weight of the cover plate and of the beam'I'I, and.. actuating member 26 will cause the cover plate to swing downwardly by gravity to the open position, as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 3, 4 and 6, the end of the portion I9 engaging with the` stop pin 24 to limit the downwardly swinging movement of the cover platev and the actuating member. Itis only necessary that the actuating member 26 be rocked slightly from its horizontal position to move the tab 23to the oir-center position previously referred to, and to allow the actuating member and the cover plate to swing down by gravity, such position towhich the actuating member 25 should be moved for this purpose being illustrated in Fig. 5 in full lines.
When the cover plate I4 is in theopen position, the left hand end, (as viewed in the drawing) of the member 26 will extend just slightly,
above the level of the bed platev I0, as shown in dotted lines in Iig. 3 and there will be Asuflicient space betweenthis end of the member and the downwardly inclined cover vplate to allow a finger of the operator to be inserted therebetween to move the member 26 to its full line position, as shown inrFig. 5, at winch time the cover plate I4 will be in'a substantially closed position. It will be seen that after the member 26has been moved to this position downward pressure vexerted upon the left hand end of the member, as viewed in the drawing, will swing the beam I1 and the tab 23 still further to bring the tab slightly beyond the vertical plane of the longitudinal center line of the pivots 20, as viewedin Fig. 3, at which time the cover plafte will be` locked inthe fully closed position.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described herein, it should be understood that the invention is susceptible of various modications and adaptations within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
