UNITED sTA'rss PATENT orrics.
JOSEPH MANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR '10 UNION SPECIAL MAGHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CURFORhTION' OF ILLINOIEE.
FOLDER FOB, SEWING MACHINES.
Application filed March The invention relates to new and useful improvements in folders for sewing Inachines, and more particularly to a folder which is adapted to form a double lap seani fell and is often referred to as a feller.
An object of the invention is to provide a feller of the above type with a supporting base for upturning and inturning one of the edge portions of the fabric sections to be united, and a scroll which inturns the edge portion of the other section of the fabric and inter-folds the two folded portions of the fabric sections, which scroll is made detachable and interchangeable with scrolls of other dimensions so that the feller may be used for guiding and forming of felled seams of different widths, and also may be used for guiding fabrics of different thicknesses; that is, the object of the invention broadly is to provide a universal double lap seam feller which may be readily varied as to capacity.
Another object of the invention is to provide a double lapped seam feller wherein the scroll portion may be adjusted angularly of the base or lower portion for varying the position of one edge of the lap seam relative to one of the needles operating to form stitches for uniting the fabric sections.
These and other objects will in part be obvices and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
i In the drawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the inven tion Figure 1 is a plan View of a double lap scam feller embodying the improvements;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, but showing the parts separated in order to more clearly show the structure of each part;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but show ing a portion broken away in order to illustrate the manner of uniting the sections;
Fig. 4 is a view of the feller from the front end thereof;
Fig. 5 a. view from the rear or delivery end of the feller; and
.Fig. 6 is a bottom plan View of the detachable and. adjustable scroll removed from the feller.
The invention is directed broadly to a double lap seani feller which is made in de tachable sections. One of said sections is a base plate detachably and adjustably secured to the cloth plate of the machine, and having an upstanding curved guiding wall for upstill lit) 1925. Serial No. 12,838.
turning and infolding the edge portion of the lower section of fabric so that said section is turned over the body part of the fabric section. The feller also includes a detachable scction which is provided with a scroll located relative to said guiding Wall as to receive the upper fabric section and. inturn and underturn the edge portion thereof and direct said. interned portion of the upper section so that it will be inter-folded with the edge per tien of the lower section of the fabric. This lower section may be used with any widths of fells or thickne ":es of fabric. The scroll portion of the teller can readily be changed for aiuithcr scroll portion, so that the double lap sealn feller may thus be used for forming fcils of different widths andfroin different thicknesses of fabric.
.lttcfcrring more in detail to the drawings, the fuller consists of a base member 1 having an upturned edge portion 2 which is bent at 3 so as to overlie the base portion 1. This part of the fellcr is carried by the supporting bracket- 4 having elongated holes 5-5 therethrougrh, through which screws may be passed for securing the feller to the cloth plate of the machine. i 3
Associated with this lower section of the feller or base portion is a folder scroll section which consists of a fabric supporting part 6, the edge of which is turned. downwardly at 7, thence under said. supporting part as indicated. at 8, and thence outwardly and urnrardly at 9, and back at 10 over the supporting part so that the upper section of the fabric may pass over the support 6 and have its edge portion carried into the scroll and thus inturncd and under-turned. The part 8 of the scroll is spaced from the base section 6, as clearly indicated in Figs. 4t and 5. The under section. of the fabric is turned upwardly and inwardly by the curved portion of the base section and the edge thereof led into the guiding space formed by this under turned part 8 of the feller. Thus it is that the two sections of the fabric are inter-folded so that, when they pass from this feller and are stitched together, they will. form a double lap seam fell. This feller is adapted to be used in'connectionwith a two needle machine r a three needle machine.
The two sections of the feller are secured together in the following manner: The upper section has a depending pin 11, which is adapted to enter a hole 12 in the base portion 1. This pin 11 is mounted on the lower edge of a bracket 13 which is secured to and supports the portion 6 of the upper section of the feller. Said portion 6 has an openin 14 therethrough. The bracket 13 is provided with a hole 15 therethrough adapted to receive a screw 16 which is threaded into the opening 17 in the bracket 4t of the lower section of the folder. This hole 15 is larger than the shank of the screw, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. A screw driver may be inserted through the opening Hand loosen the screw 16, which permits a limited movement of the scrollsection of the feller swinging about the pin 11.
The purpose of this adjustment of this'upper scroll section of the feller is to shift the left hand edgeof the felled seam relative to the left hand needle so as to position the line of stitches formed by this needle closer to or farther from the folded edge of the fabric section. The entire feller may be shifted by loosening the screws which pass through the slots 55, and thus the'curved upturned edge portion 2. shifted relative to the right hand needle. By these adjustments, the felled seam may be shifted relative to either needle or to both needles, and in shifting the felled seam relative to both needles or relative .to the left hand needle only, the size of the fell is very slightly varied.
' For making different sized fells, however, the upperscroll portion is removed and another s ection having a different capacity substituted. therefor. This makes a universal double lap seam feller, which can be readily changed for different sized seams and for positioning the line of stitching relative to the edges of the felled seam.
The operation of folding the fabric sections is similar to that of any feller and, therefore, further description of the'arrangement of the fabric sections is not thought necessary, nor is it thought necessary to show the location of the needles. It will be understood, of course, that these needles are adjacent the delivery end of the feller. The invention is directed broadly to the adjustability of the feller and the interchangeability of the sections of the feller, and not particularly to the details of the structure of the feller or the manner of bringing about the detachability of the parts.
It is obvious, therefore, that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without; departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
hat I claim as new is 1. A lap seam feller comprising a. base por tion having an upstanding int urned guiding wall for directing the edge portion of a lower fabric section and inturning the same. a scroll guiding section for inturning and undert urning the edge portion of an upper fabric section and interfolding said edge portions, said scroll section having a fabric supporting section extending over the iuturned guiding wall on the base portion, a bracket beneath said fabric guiding portion and secured thereto for supporting said scroll, said b acket ha ving a portion spaced from the underside of the fabric guidingportion, means locat ed beneath said fabric guiding section for securing said bracket to said base, said fabric guiding section having an opening theretln'ough whereby said securing means is accessible.
2. A lap seam feller comprising a base portion having an inistanding inturned guiding wall for directing the edge portion of a lower fabric section and inturning the same, a scroll guiding section for inturning and umlerturning the edge portion of an upper fabric section and interfolding said edge portions, said scroll section having a fabric supporting section extending over the inturned guiding wall on the base portion, a bracket beneath said fabric guiding portion and secured thereto for supporting said scroll, said bracket having a portion spaced from the underside of the fabric guiding portion, said bracket having a pin adapted to engage an opening in the base and an opening tlna'etln'ough, a clamping screw passing tl'irough said opening and threaded into said base, said clamping screw being located entirely beneath the fabric guiding portion, the opening for said screw being larger than the shank of the screw whereby when said screw is released said. scroll portion can be angularly adjusted about the pivot pin.
In testimony whereof, I ailii; my signature.
