The invention relates to, new and useful improvements in a presser foot for sewmg machines, andmore particularly to a presser foot for guiding the upturned edge portions 5 of fabric sections for trimming and for turning down the trimmed portions into flat relation for stitching.

The'invention is directed to a presser'foot' for a sewin machine for producing a flat seam. Associated with the presser foot are horizontally disposed trimming devices. The presser foot is provided with a channel for directing the upturnededge portions of fabric sections to the trimming devices, and also with means for turning down the trimmed edge portions into flat lapped position for stitching. It is quite important that contr'olthroughout the entire movement of said edge portions to and from the trimming mechanism. Sometimes the thickness of the fabric sections vary relative'to'each other. The presser foot of the present invention is provided with a channel through which the Y upturned edge portions'are led to the trimming mechanism and the portions of the foot along the channel are rigid relative to each other. Extending into this opening are stitch ifingers 9. The side walls of the'presser footf'in rear of the trimming devices are constructed so as to lay the trimmededge portions down one on the other. These parts are of theusual constructiorr in this type'of pres'ser' foot.
The rigid portion l of the'presser footis provided with a channel v 10 extending the full length thereof. A flat spring 11 is secured to the upper face of thisflat portion 4 by a suitable screw 12. The flat springll extends around the toehand lengthwise of the recess 10. TheeXtreme rear en d of the flat spring is turned up as indicated at 13. Said end is free howeverfrom connection with the foot portion. This fiat spring member 15 extends around underneath the foot portion 5 and lies in the recess 14. This spring ineinber likewise is flush with the under face of the foot section 5 when pressure is applied thereto, and when excessive pressure is released, then said spring member will be moved to a position slightly beneath the lower face of the foot section 5. As shown in Fig. 5 of the d 'awings, only one yielding member is provided and the section 5 of the foot is solid and of the usual construction. As is clearly shown in the drawings the groove in the presser foot is of a depth equal to the thickness of the spring member so that when the spring member is forced into the recess it forms a foot section which is to all essential purposes a solid foot section as has already been stated. Furthermore, the rear end of the spring member is bentupwardly as indicated at 13 in the drawings, and when the spring membersare moved from the recess to engage the fabric this upturned end remains between the side walls of the recess and operates to prevent said spring member from shifting laterally relative to the channel in the presser foot through which the upturned edge portions of the fabric sections are guided. lVhen the edge portions are being trimmed it is essential that the fabric sections do not shift laterally as they are fed beneath the presser foot, and, therefore, it is very essential that these yielding members be held against any lateral movement when pressing on and controlling the fabric sections.
The operation of the machine is such that if two thicknesses of material are fed under the foot section 5 and only one thickness under the foot section 4, then the spring member 11 will yield so as to engage the single thickness of fabric and hold said single thickness against the work support and in proper engagement with the feed sections of the feed dog. When the presser foot is equipped with a spring member on the under face of the foot section 5 and two thicknesses of fabric are fed under the foot section 4 and only one thickness under the foot section 5, then the yielding spring member 11 due to the pressure of the spring on the presser bar which is greater than the yielding spring action of the member 11 will cause said member to move into the recess and lie flush with the under face of the foot section 4. At this time, however, the yielding member 15 will move downward out of its recess and into contact with a single thickness of fabric and properly hold said single thickness in contact with the Work support or the feed sections of the feed dog. hen the fabric thicknesses are the same on both sides of the channel, then the yielding members will be housed within the recesses provided therefor, and will be substantially flush with the under face of the foot sections. The foot sections in this case will operate pre cisely as if they were solid foot sections.
The presser foot is cut away or is provided with a space on the under face thereof in rear of the needle opening 8. Located in this recess or space is a yielding section 16 which extends all the way across the presser foot. Said yielding section is carried by vertically extending members 17, 17. Springs 18 bearing on said yielding section normally force said yielding section in a downward direction. A suitable stop is provided for limiting the movement of this yielding section 16. The stop, however, is so positioned that the yielding section may move so that its under face is above a plane containing the under face of the foot sections a and 5, and on the other hand it is also capable of moving to a position where the under face is beneath a plane containing said under face of the foot sections. This yielding section in rear of the needle opening is -for the purpose of t"- care of cross seams, elastic tap anzithe like. The yielding section 161s provided with a clearance space 19 directly in rear of the needle opening 8 to prevent the enchained thread loop during chaining off from being out by the feed dog.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully describe-cl my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of horizontally disposed trimming devices, a presser foot associated therewith and having a channel for directing the upturned edge portions of fabrie sections to said trimming devices and having means for turning down the trimmed portions into fiat lapping relation, the foot portions of said presser foot along the side of said channel. being rigidly supported by the shank of the presser foot, one of said foot portiens having a recess in its under face, a spring member attached to said foot portion and extending from front to rear of said foot portion in said recess, said spring member being normally disposed beneath said foot portion when free from pressure and being flush with the foot portion when under pressure, said spring member having the free end thereof shaped so as to remain at all times under the lateral control of the side walls of the recess.
2. 3. The'combination of horizontally disposed trimming devices, a presser foot associated therewith and having a channel for directing the upturned edge portions of fabric sections to said trimming devices, "and having means for turning down the trimmed portions into'flat lapping relation, the foot portions of said presser foot along thesides of said channel being rigidly supported by the shank of the presser foot, said foot port? tions at the sides of the channel terminating a substantially in line with the rear side of the needle opening, one of said foot portions have mg a recess in its under face extending from front to rear, aflat spring member attached to said foot portion and lying in said recess and adapted to move from a position flush with theunder faceof the foot portion to a I position beneath the same, said presser foot having a yielding section extending all the Way across said presser foot and disposed directly in rear of the needle opening.
4. The combination of horizontally disposed trimming devices, a presser foot associated therewith and having a channel for directing the upturned edge portions of fabric sections to said trimming devices, and having means for turning down the trimmed portions into flat lapping relation, the foot portions of said presser foot along the sides of the channel being rigidly supported by the shank of the presser foot, said foot portions at the sides of the channel terminating substantially in line with the rear side of the needle opening, one of said foot portions having a recess in its under face extending from u front to rear, a fiat spring member attached to said foot portion and lying in said recess and adapted to move from a position flush with the under face of the foot'portion to a position beneath the same, said presser foot having a yielding sectionextending all the way across said presser foot and disposed directly in rear ofthe needle opening, said yielding portion having a clearance space at its front side directly in rear of the needle opening.
