EDGE-GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 16, 1916. Serial No. 120,443.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DE Von, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVestfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Guides, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to sewing machines andv particularly to attachments for the cloth-plates thereof.
It has for its object to provide a new and improved cover-slide closing the opening in the clothplatethrough which access is had to the under thread mechanism, and to combine therewith, an edge-guide of small dimensions affording very little obstruction to the passage of fabric and particularly useful in glove sewing, in which blanks, shaped to conform to the fingers, must be laid on both sides of the edge-guide in performing certain stitch attaching operations. It is also desirable that the cover-' plate and edgeeguide carried thereby be readily replaceable by a cover-plate without an edge-guide in order that the machine may be available for general use. The fasten'mg means for securing the cover-plate in position facilitates removal of the coverplate.
To the attainment of these ends, the clothplate is provided with an opening bridged by a relatively narrow throat-plate of the usual form, and to either side thereof are arranged cover-plates or slides with beveled edges fitted to undercut guideways along the sides of the opening in the cloth-plate. For securing the cover-plate in operative position, a lever with a beveled end or camface is pivoted to the upper face of the coverslide, and is normally spring-pressed in a direction tending to force said cam-face against the guideways in'the cloth-plate, through the agency of a straight spring secured at one end to the lever laterally of its pivot and bearing against a stop or abutment fixed to the cover-plate. Beneath the cover-plate, in a substantially rectangularshapedrecess, is secured the body portion of an edge-guide whose active fabrlc-gulding portion consists of an ofiset portion bent upwardly at a right angle and undercut so as to overhang the throat-plate with which the cover-plate is abutted when normal operative position.
The invention consists further in certain features of construction which will appear j in the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are plan views of the topand bottom respectively of the cover-plate and guide; and Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line A-B Fig. 1, showing the combined cover-plate and guide in end elevation. Fig. 1 is a detail view in side elevation of the edge-guide.

The cloth-plate 1 has a raised portion 2 in which is provided an opening, indicated generally at 3, bridged by a throat-plate 4 of suitable form having an elongated needlehole 5 therein. Cover-plates 6 and '7 are arranged flush with the throat-plate on opposite sides thereof vand the edges 8 and 9 are beveled to fit undercut guideways 10 formed along the sides of the opening 3 in the cloth plate.
A lever 11 is pivoted at 12 to the upper face of the cover-plate or slide 7 adjacent an abutment or stop13 fixed tothe coverplate and a spring 14,'fixed at 15 to the lever adjacent the pivot 12, bears against the abutment 13 with such force as to rotate the lever about its pivot, thereby forcing the beveled end'16, formed by a downwardly bent por tion of one end of the lever,- into engagement with the undercut guideway 10,'whereby the cover-plate is urged in a direction trans verse to the guideways with suffi'cient force to be held wedged in place. The cover-plate is cut away at 17 to receive the beveled end 16 of the lever and the sidewalls 18 and 19 of the incision constitute stops limiting the movement of the lever in either direction as is obvious from the drawings. For effecting the release of. the beveled end orcamface 16 and removal of the cover-plate or slide, the lever 11 at its other end is bent upwardlyto form a finger-grip 20 and a clip 21, similarly bent to form a finger-grip and fixed to the cover-plate adjacent the gripend of the lever, facilitates manipulation of the lever. i
The cover-plate is recessed at 22 and the in. An active fabric edge-guiding portion 125 is struck up fromthe'blank laterally of l the body portion as shown clearly in Fig. i of the drawings. This active edge-guiding portion is highest at its forward end adjacent the needle-hole in the throat-plate. Its top is beveled at 26 and slopes down to a point where it disappears beneath a U shaped slot in the cover-plate. The edgeguide is also undercut at 27 so as to overhang the throat-plate and to bring the active edge-guiding portion in close proximity to the needle. The edge-guide 24 may be adjusted on the cover-plate to vary the location of the seam through the agency of a clamp-screw 28 tapped into the body 23 of the edge-guide and slot 29 in the coverplate.
The cover-plate 6 is frictionally retained in position by the flared spring end 30' conveniently formed by a short saw-cut as obvious from the drawings.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that I have devised means for securing the combined cover-plate and edgeguide in operative position on the clothplate of the machine, which means firmly hold the edge-guide against the thrust of the fabric as it is pulled along by the feed, but which are easily manipulated to permit small adjustments of the edge-guide or complete removal of the cover-plate. In certain classes of work it is desirable to quickly set the edge-guide at slightly difierent distances from the needle in order to change the distance of the line of stitches from the raw edge of the material. For this purpose the lever 11 may be readily moved to unlock and shift the cover-slide the required distance with an inconsiderable waste of the operators time.
Having thus set forth the natureof the invention what I claim herein is 1. In a sewing machine, a cloth-plate having an opening therein, guideways along the sides of said opening, in combination with a cover-plate removably secured in said guideways, and an edge-guide having a body portion secured to the under side of said cover-plate and an active fabric edge-guiding portion at an angle thereto and extending upwardly above the upper surface of the cover-plate.
2. In a sewing machine, a cloth-plate having a raised portion provided with guideways adjacent an opening therein, in combination with a cover-plate carrying an edge guide and means frictionally retaining said cover-plate in position in said guideways.
3. In a sewing machine, a cloth-plate having an opening therein, parallel guideways along the sides of said opening, in combination with a cover-plate fitted to said guideways and carrying an edge-guide, and means on the cover-plate tending to force said cover-plate in a direction transverse to said guideways whereby said cover-plate may be held wedged in operative position, said means being movable to a position between the sides of the coverplate whereby the in troduction and removal of the cover-plate is facilitated.
4. In a sewing machine, a cloth-plate having an opening therein, guideways along the sides of said opening, in combination with a cover-plate fitted to said guideways, and means tending to force said cover-plate in a direction transverse to said guideways whereby said cover-plate may be held wedged in operative position, said means including an arm pivoted to the cover-plate and having a cam-face, and a spring arranged to force said cam-face toward a line passing through the pivot of said arm and perpendicular to the guideways.
5. In a sewing machine, a cloth-plate hav ing an opening therein, guideways along the sides of said opening, in combination with a cover-plate fitted to said guideways and means tending to move said cover-plate in a direction transverse to said guideways whereby said cover-plate may be held wedged in operative position, said means including a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and having at one end a cam-face, a spring arranged to force said cam-face against the guideway, and a'clip fixed to said coverplate adjacent the other end of said lever for facilitating manipulation thereof to effect release of the cover-plate.
6. A sewing machine with a cloth-plate having an opening therein, a throat-plate bridging the opening, in combination with a cover-slide removably secured to said clothplate flush with said throat-plate, an edgeguide secured to said cover-slide and having an active fabric-guiding portion extending above the upper surface of said cover-plate and overhanging said throat-plate adjacent the stitching point.
7. In a sewing machine, a cloth-plate having an opening therein, a throat-plate bridging the openin and havin a needle-hole therein, in com ination wit a cover-slide removably secured to said cloth-plate, an edge-guide, the major portion of which is secured beneath said cover-slide and the smaller active fabric-guiding portion of which projects above the cover-plate, and means permitting adjustment of said edgeguide on the cover-slide when in its operative position adjacent the needle-hole in the throat-plate.
8. A cover-plate, an edge-guide carried thereby, said cover-plate having a recess in its lower face, said cover-plate being provided with a slot, a screw passing through said slot and adjustablysecuring said edgeguide in said recess and being accessible from the upper face of the cloth-plate, and means for moving said cover-plate lengthwise.
9. In a sewing machine, a cloth-plate having an opening therein, a throat-plate bridging the opening and having a needle-hole therein, in combination with a cover-slideremovably secured to said cloth-plate, an edge-guide the major portion of which is secured beneath said cover-slide and a smaller active fabric-guiding portion of which projects above the cover-plate in proximity tovthe needle hole, and means for moving said cover-slide to adjust said edgeguide toward or away from the throat-plate.
10. In a sewing machine a removable cover-plate provided with a slot, an edge guide having a shank positioned beneath said plate and an active edge-guiding portion projecting above the upper surface of said cover-plate, and a screw passing down through said slot and securing said shank adjustably to said cover-plate, said screw affording means for adjusting said edgeguide accessible from above the cover-plate.
11. In a sewing machine, a cloth-plate provided with an opening and guide-ways along the sides thereof, in combination with a cover-plate, and means automatically operating to wedge the plate in the guide-ways and manually operative to release said plate whereby it may be readily moved in the guide-Ways, said means including a springpressed lever.
