Description

I Patented Oct. 4, 1921 7 j filflia J1 INVENTOR. WITNESSES: 2 322354771, if. 11 fr 25/ ATTORNEY,
WILLIAM w. 'I-IIRK, or, ZION CITY,
SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed. February 2, 1917. Serial No. 146,229.
T 0 all whom 2'2, may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM 5V. HinK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Zion City, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments, of which the following a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments for sewing machines, and has for its object the provision of an attachment arranged to be attached to an ordinary Singer hemst-iteh sewing machine of Class 72- type and adapted to properly trim the edges of the work and feed a cord thereto to be stitched along said edges.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a sectional view of the attachment shown in position of use, the sewing machine head being indicated in dotted lines,
Fig. 2, a plan view illustrating the operative connection for operating the device,
Fig. 3, a plan view of the sewing plate as modified for use with the device,
Fig. 4, a sectional plan view of the device, and
Fig. 5, a detail view of a portion of a. piece of work sewed on the machine, when equipped with the attachment.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a supporting block 6 arranged to be secured to the ordinary sewing machine table or top plate '7, as shown. The block 6 carries a shear knife 8 set in the central slot 9 formed in the ordinary sewing plate 10 of the machine, the cutting edge 11 of the knife 8 being set flush with or just below the upper surface of said plate along which the work being sewed passes. Another cooperating shear knife 12 carries an oscillatory arm 13 having an adjustable slot and pin connection 14 with the lower end of an adjustable link 15 connected, at its upper end, with an oscillatory arm 16 adjustably secured to the usual oscillatory shaft 17 of the sewing machine. The block 6 is provided with a beveled nose 18 arranged in the cutting path of the shear Specification of Letters IPatent.

knife 8 and adapted to separate the work cut thereby thus greatly facilitating the op eration of said knife.
The block 6 also carries a laterally and forwardly extending arm 19 having a branch arm.20 at its forward end provided with an upstanding perforated lug 21 adapted to serve as a cord guide. Another branch arm 22 is provided on arm 19 and carries a guide plate 28 arranged to cooperate with guide lug 21 to direct av cord 23 into the machine with the work, said cord being stitched to the edge of the work by the ordinary stitches of the sewing machine, as will be readily understood.
The attachment is illustrated as used in conjunrtion with an ordinary Singer hemstitch sewing mamhine, the head 24 of which is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. This head is provided with the usual sewing needle 25 and piercers 26 and 27 operating on the edge of the work 28 to form a hemstitch 29 therein, and the shear knives 8 and 12 cut or trim the edge of the cloth to produce a picot edge or an ornamental scalloped effect, as indicated in Fig. 5, the cord 23 being bound into said edge, as indicated.
The arrangement set forth is simple and efficient in operation, will accurately and automatically trim the edge of the work, as
indicated, and will permit of the turning of ver sharp corners.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of constructionfor carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departingfrom the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a sewing machine having the usual sewing table and ver tical reciprocating needle, of a knife set with its cutting edge to the rear of said needle; and a separating block having a beveled nose and set on said table to the rear and in the cutting path of said knife, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a sewing ma- ILLINOIS. essreivoa or channel" 1 0 Brennan FEUER-MAN.
chine having the usual sewing table and vertically reciprocating needle, of a stationary knife blade set with its cutting edge to the rear of said needle and flush with the upper surface of said table; a cotiperating movable knife blade above said table; means for operating said movable knife; and a sepai ating' block having a beveled nose and set on said table to the rear of said stationary blade in the cutting path of said knife, substantially 10 as described. 7 V
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
