Be it known that-I, Jenn P. Wins, a citizen of the United States, residing atNyack, in the county of ltockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimming Mechanism for Sewing-lilachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trimming meehanism for sewing machines, and is particu* larly adapted for that class of vibrating needle machines making a zigzag stitch such for instance as is used for attaehing'the embroidery strips to various articles, as muslin underwear, etc., and is especially adapted for machines sewing medallions to the body of the goods where it is necessary to cut out the cloth underneath the medallion simultaneously with the stitching operation, the object of the invention being to provide an improved trimming mechanism comprising a pair of trimming means, either of which is capable of being thrown into and out of action at the will of the operator, and one of which may be actuated by a foot pedal and the other by hand, whereby a great variety of work may be performed on onemachine which has heretofore necessitated several separate operations.
In practice it has been usual to stitch the embroidery along the edge by one machine, then stitch the medallions in place by another machine while the trimming of the cloth under the medallions was performed by another operation, usually by hand, whereas in the present improvement all of thxse various operations may be performed on one machine by simply suspending the cutting action of one trimmer while the other is in use,
in the present improvement two trimming mechanisms are provided, both located normally below the cloth plate, but one of which is located in front of the stitching mechanism while the other is in the rear thereof. The front trimming mechanism is effective to trim the edge or edges of the work before it reaches the needle, this trim- .niug mechanism being capable of performing all ordinary work, such as crossing seams, plaits, folds, ruffles, etc., and is so operative as to enable the material to present a smooth'cut edge to the stitching mechanism, so that a piece of embroidery or top strip may be laid upon this cut edge of the body material and then stitched in such manner that the top and bottom edges of the embroidery or strip and the material to which it is attached, may becovered.
The rear'trimming mechanism is effective for cutting a bottom ply of material, while another ply is being stitched thereto, and in the present improvement a presser foot eooperates with the front trimmer to guide a strip of material so that it will pass over the cutting blade of the front trimmer and be stitched to the piece which has been previ ously trimmed by the front trimmer.
As stated, the front trimmer may be readily thrown into or out of operation and when out of operation the cutting knife will be depressed below the top surface of the cloth plate, in which position medallions or other similar forms of embroidery may be stitched to the body of the material, and then the rear trimming mechanism, during such stitching, brought into action by the operator so as to cut out thebottom material from underneath the medallion or embroidery, thusproducing an open effect in the work. v i Y.
In the present improvement the construction is such that one trimming mechanism is, as stated, located in front of the needle to cut in a line somewhat to the right of the needle so that the stitching will cover the cut edge, while the rear trimming mechanism, which will be brought into action when the cutting action of the front trimmerissuspended, for trimming in irregular shapes, is so located that it will cut on a line outside of the needle punctures so that the stitch will have a bite in the fabric on both sides of the stitch-ed lines, so as to make a strong seam.
From the foregoing, it will thus be seen that one of the objects of the invention is the provision of trimming means effective to cut irregular shapes or medallions, and that in the present improvement one trimming mechanism operates to cut the edges of the work before it is stitched, while the other operates to cut the work after such stitching, that is, after a part thereof is stitched, and as such stitching proceeds and the organization of the trimming mechanism is such that the trimmers are so located relatively to the needle that one is in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other, and in the present instance the front trimming mechanism cuts inside of the center line of the stitches while the rear trimming mechanism cuts outside of the line of stitches, and this improved organization makes it possible for the first time to perform all of the work on one and the same machine.

The front trimming mechanism shown herein is similar to that shown and described in my Patent No. 1,025,552, dated May 7th, 1912, to which reference may be had for a detailed description thereof: Therefore a brief description thereof is only necessary herein.
1 illustrates the bed plate of a sewing machine frame on which is journaled the main shaft 2. The cloth plate 3 is provided with the usual throat plate 4 having the necessary slots for operation of the feed dogs 5, to which-feed dogs is connected the feed bar 6 which in turn is connected with the feed rocker frame 7 which rocker frame is, by means of an arm 8, connected with the usual adjustable crank and feed lift eccentric so that the feed has the usual four motion imparted thereto. The needle bar 9 carries the usual thread carrying needle 10, and the presser bar 11 is provided with the usual presser foot shank 12 having the presser foot 13 secured thereto. The front trimming bracket 14 is provided with a guideplate 15 which is attached thereto for ad justing the trimmer laterally. The trimmer frame 16 is secured in position in the manner shown in the patent hereinbefore referred to.
An oscillating shaft 18 supports the trimmer lever, one arm 17 of which extends downward while the other arm 20 thereof carries the cutting knife 21 which is secured to the arm at 22. Regulation of the pressure of the trimmer knife is obtained by means of a screw bushing 19. A stationary knife 23 is provided, held in position by a clamping lever 24 having a handle 25 for the purpose of manipulating the stationary knife when it is desired to remove the same, and this knife is held in a recess of that part 26 of the trimmer frame 16. A latch 27 is pivotally secured to the trimmer lever at 28 and co-acts with a pin 29 carried by the adjustable collar 30 carried by the telescopic tube 31, the opposite end of which is provided with a strap 32 encircling the eccentric 33 on the driving shaft. This latch 27 and pin 29 provide a coupling device by means of which the knife 21 may be thrown into or out of operation and permit, when thrown out of action, the knife 21 to be depressed below the surface of the cloth plate. The telescopic tube 31 is provided with a coil spring 31. the well known construction used with machines known as the Metropolitan sewing machines, so that a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.
As hereinbefore stated, the throat plate 4 is provided with the usual feed slots 35 for the operation of the feed dogs 5, and this throat plate is also provided with needle hole slots 36 having a stitch finger or tongue 36 between them, over which the stitches are formed, and a cut out portion is provided at 37 for the front trimmer blades. This throat plate is also slotted at 38 for the reception of a knife 39 of the rear trimmer mechanism and the plate is also drilled for the reception of a pin 40 upon which the knife 39 swings. This slot 38 in the throat plate is just to the right of the needle holes looking from the front of the machine, so as to leave a margin of cloth between the right-hand needle puncture and the line of trim. This knife 39 is provided with a penetrating point 41 and a cutting edge 42 and is also provided with an elongated slot 43 to receive a pin 44 carried by an operating lever 45, which lever is pivotally secured to the feed bar 6 as at 46 by means of a shoulder screw.
The rear portion 47 of the pivoted lever has connected thereto a spring 48 the opposite end of which is connected as at 49 to the feed rocker frame 7. An adjustable plate 50 is provided with an elongated slot and a finger tab thereby to permit the same to be shifted into position to limit the movement of the lever 47, this plate sliding on the rocker frame and being clamped in position by a screw 51. Secured to the rear end of the pivoted lever 47 is a rod 52 and this rod projects through the table as at 54 and is connected by means of a swivel 55 with a The stitching mechanism is 1 lever 56pivoted to a bracket 57, the opposite end of which lever is connected by a suitable flexible connection, as for instance a chain 59 with a suitable floor treadle so that as the treadle is depressed the rod 52 will be forced upward and thus carry the rear portion of the lever 4L7 into position into contact with the hub 61 of the rocker frame 7, sothat the knife will be depressed. As soon as pressure is removed from the treadle the spring 48 will return the parts to their normal working position with the rear end of the lever 47 resting upon the adjustable plate 50.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the knife actuating lever 47 is secured to the feed bar in such manner that it has the same movement as the feed bar and that by reason of the pin and slot connection 43, 4st between the knife 39 and the lever 47 a lifting motion is given to the front end of the knife so that the knife is swung upon its pivot a0 and thus has the same lifting mo tion as the feed dog. This knife 39 is made of very thin steel and the cutting edge there of cooperates with the right-hand edge of the slot 38 thus forming a shear cutting action between the two. The lever 47 is at all times held against the adjustable plate 50 when the treadle is not depressed and should it be desired to do a class of work that does not require this rear trimming mechanism the plate may be so adjusted as to hold the lever 47 up against the hub (31 so that the cutting blade 39 is depressed below the surface of the throat plate, thus rendering it inactive.
In Fig. I is shown a presser foot particularly adapted for use when medallions are to be sewed to the work, and this foot is provided with needle holes 62, a stitching finger 68 and a cut out portion (id: for guiding the medallions. This foot is formed with a short turned up end (35 so that the fingers of the operator may manipulate the work very close to the stitching position. In practice, when a piece of work having a square insertion or medallion is being stitched the foot may have to be lifted slightly so that the work can be turned, but on oral or round pieces the bearing of the foot is such as to permit free turning of the work without lifting the foot from the feed, and for this reason the medallion foot is small, covering but very little of the feed surface.
In Fig. 5 is shown a presser foot particularly adapted for use with embroidery work, and this foot has an extended portion 66 provided with a guard 67 adjacent to the knife 21 of the front trimming mechanism and has secured thereto at the front of the feet a ll-shaped inclined guide 68 for convenience in guiding the edges of the work.
In Fig. 3 a piece of embroidery or edging is shown at 69 stitched to the work by means of a zig-zag stitch 71, and a medallion 7 2 is also shown stitched to the work at the edges thereof by stitches 73, such medallion being shown cut out as at 70.
It. will be understood that the various details may be more or less modified without departing from the spirit or scope of the on different machines, andfrom the foregoing it will be observed that either of the trimming mechanisms may be thrown into or out of action without interfering with the stitching mechanism.
It will also be understood that in some instances where the article of wearing apparel requires it, an edge of the medallion and an adjoining edge the edging or embroidery may be connected with the goods by the same stitches, thus also saving one stitching operation, especially where the medallion is of a form that will permit this, as for instance, of considerable length or rectangular, both trimmers operating at the same time to cut in the manner hereinbefore described. In
.these instances, if the medallion extends to the l ft of the needles during this operation, both the medallion and the goods would be fed under the presser foot; if however, the medallion extends to the right of the needles, it would be fed over the front of the presser foot and then after the edge in juxtaposition to the edging is sewed the medallion would be laid over on the body of the goods.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a sewing machine for forming 1nedallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, and a cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mechanism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds.
2. In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, and a cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material subsequent to the stitching thereof whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion.
8. In a sewing machine, the combinationof stitching mechanism including a needle for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, and a cutter located in the rear of the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion andform a medallion or insertion. 4;. In a sewing machine for formlng medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a. plurality of plies of material, and a cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only from the body portion of the under ply of material to form an endless edge, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mechanism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds.
5. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism forstitching together a plurality of plies of material, a cutter located in proximity to theneedle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mechanism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the Work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds, means for automatically actuating said trimming means, and means for throwing it into and out of operation.
6. In a sewing machine for forming medallions and having feeding mechanism, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the out out portion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mechanism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds, said trimming mechanism connected to the feeding mechanism for movement therewith, and means for throwing said trimming means into or out'of action.
7. In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism including a needle for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a cutter located in the rear of the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, means for automatically actuating said trimming means, and means for throwing it into and out of operation.
, 8. In a sewing machine, the combination of stitching mechanism including a needle for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a cutter located in the rear of and to one side of the needle for cutting out only from the body portion of the under ply of material to form an endless edge, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, means for automatically actuating said trimming means, and means for throwing it into and out of operation.
9. In a sewing machine for forming medallions and having feeding mechanism, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mechanism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds, 35 said trimming means connected to the feeding mechanism for movement therewith, means for throwing said trimming means into or out of action, and means for limiting the movement of said trimming means.
10. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mechanism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds, means for automatically actuating said trimming means, and pedally operative means for throwing it into and out of operation.
11. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plu 'ality of plies of material, a cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mechanism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds, means for automatically actuating said trimming means, and means for throwing said cutter below the surface of the cloth-plate.
12. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of materia operating mechanism therefor, trimming mechanism including a 129, cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only a portion of the under ply of material, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out port-ion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mech- 13{ anism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds, means for throwing said trimming means into and out of operation, and means carried by said op erating mechanism for maintaining said trimming means in or out of action.
13. In a sewing machine for forming medallions,- the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a presser foot mechanism under :the presser foot of which one ply of material. passes and over which and guided thereby another ply of material passes, and automatically operative trimming mecha-. nism including a cutter located in proximity to the needle for cutting out only a portion of that ply of material which passes under the .presscr foot, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion.
14. In a sewing machine for forming meclallions,-the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of 1naterial, a presser foot mechanism. under the presser foot of which-one ply of material passes and over which and guided thereby another ply of material passes, automatically operative trimming mechanism including a cutter located at the rear of. the needle for cutting out only a portion of that ply of material which passes under the presser foot, wher .by the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut outportion and form a medallion or insertion, the stitching mechanism and cutter being so arranged that the latter cuts the work previously stitched as the stitching operation proceeds, and means under the control of the operator for throwing said cutter into and out of operation.
15. In a sewing machine having a cloth plate and feeding mechanism, the combination of stitching mechanism including a needle for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, trimming mechanism connected with said feeding mechanism for movement therewithand including a shiftable knife operative in the rear of the needle to cut out only a portion of the under ply of material subsequent to the stitching there of, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut outportion and form a medallion or insertion,-means for throwing said trimming mechanism intoor out of action, and adjustable mechanism carried by the feeding mechanism for adjusting the amount of movement of said feeding mechanism and also etl'ective to maintain said shiftable knife below the upper surface of the clothplate.
16. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, and a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching'mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side ofthe needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other Whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upperply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion.
17. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanismfor. stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of theneedle. but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply ,of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, one of said trimming mechanisms effective to cut the edges of the work prior to its being stitched and the other operative to cut-the lower ply of material subsequent to the stitching thereof, and means for automatically operating both of said trimming mechanisms.
18. In a sewin machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of materiahand a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge oft-he material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches,and one located in the rear of the other, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion.
19. In a sewing machine for forming me dallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a. pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position tocut close to the center line of the stitches than the-other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, and one located in front of the needle and the other to the rear thereof, andmeans for throwing either of said trimming mechanismsinto and out of operation at the will of the operator.
20. In a sewin machine for formingmedallions, the com ina-tion of stitching mechplies or" material, a pair nism for stitching together the center line of the stitches than the anism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of operating with said stitching mechanism and with both of said trimming mechanisms and effective to feed one ply of material under the presser foot thereof and to feed and guide another ply of material forming the medallion over the presser foot thereof.
21. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together aplurality of of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, a presser foot mechanism cooperating with said stitching mechanism and with both of said trimming mechanisms and effective to feed one ply of material under the presser foot thereof and to feed and guide another ply of material forming the medallion over the presser, foot thereof, means for automatically operating said trimming mechanisms, and means for throw ing either oi said trimming mechanisms into or out of operation at the will of the operator.
22. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimmmg mecha nisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other, whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line, of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, and means for automatically actuating said trimming mechanisms.
23. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechaa plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, one in position to cut closer to other, Wherebyone cuts the edge of the material inside ofthe center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, means for automatically actuating said trimming dallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, means for automatically actuating said trimming mechanisms, and independent means for throwing each of said trimming mechanisms into and out of action at the will of the operator.
25. In a sewing machine for forming 1110- dallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mcchanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being lo cated at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts theedge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, means for automatically actuating said trimming mechanisms, and independent means for throwing each of said trimming mechanisms into and out of action at the will of the operator, one of said last means comprising a manually operative means and the other a pedally operative means.
26. In a sewing machine for forming mefeeding mechanism, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, and a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material. outside of the stitches, whereby theupper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, one of said trimming mechanisms connected with 'he driving mechanism and the other with the feeding mechanism.
27. in a se ring machine for forming medallions and having driving mechanism and feeding mechanism, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mechanisms coiiperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side 01": the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, one of said trimming mechanisms connected with the driving mechanism and the other with the feeding mechanism and one located to operate in the rear of the other, and means for independently throwing said trimming mechanisms into and out of action.
28. In a sewing machine for forming medallions and having a cloth-plate, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other, whereby one cuts the edge 01 the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, each of said trimming mechanisms including a shiftable trimmer blade, means for automatically actuating said blades, and means for shifting said blades below the upper surface of the clothplate.
29. In a sewing machine for forming medallions and having driving mechanism and feeding mechanism, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form medallion or insertion, the inside trimming mechanism having connection with the driving mechanism and the outside trimming mechanism having connection with the feeding mechanism, and
means for independently throwing each of said trimming mechanisms into and out of action.
30. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the tIlHHHGIS being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside oi the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, means for throwing said trimming mechanisms into and out of action, and adjustable means for maintaining one of said trimming mechanisms out of action.
31. In a sewing machine for forming medallions, the combination of stitching mechanism. for stitching together a plurality of plies of material, a pair of trimming mechanisms cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, and located one in the rear of the other, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, whereby the upper ply will cover or fill in the cut out portion and form a medallion or insertion, means for throwing said trimming mechanisms into and out of action, and adjustable means for maintaining the rear trimming mechanism out of action.
32. In a sewing machine for forming medallions and having driving mechanism, feeding mechanism and a cloth-plate, the combination of stitching mechanism, a pair of trimming mechanisms both cooperating with the same stitching mechanism, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cutcloser to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply oi material outside of the stitches, the first etiectire to cut the edges of the work before it is stitched and the other effective to cut from the body of the work after it is stitched and as the stitching operation proceeds and one having connection with the driving mechanism and the other with the feeding mechanism, and means for throwing each of said trimming mechanisms out of action and maintaining it below the upper surface of the cloth-plate.
83. In a sewing machine having needle other cuts only the lower mechanism, feeding mechanisms and a throat-plate provided with a slot, the combination of trimming mechanism including a pivotally supported shiftable knife work ing in said slot, means connecting said knife with the feeding mechanism, means for throwing said knife into and out of action means carried by the feeding mechanism for adjusting the throw of said knife and also effective to maintain said knife below the upper surface of the throat-plate, another trimming mechanism located in front of said first trimming mechanism and in front of the needle, and means for automatically operating the same, both of the trimmers being located atthe same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the cen ter line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material'inside ofthe center line of the stitches and the ply of material outside of the stitches.
34E. Ina sewing machine having needle mechanism, feeding mechanism and a throat-plate provided with a slot, the combination of trimming mechanism including a pivotally supported shiftable knife working in said slot, means connecting said knife with the feeding mechanism, means for throwing said knife into and out of action, means carried by the feeding mechanism for adjusting the throw of said knife and also efiective to maintain said knife below the ,upper surface of the throat-plate, another trimming mechanism located in front and to one side of said first trimming mechanism and in front of the needle, means for automatically operating the same, and means for throwing the same into and out of action, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches.
85. In a sewing machine for forming medallions and having needle mechanism, the combination of a pair of trimming mechanisms located to operate one'in front of the needle and the other in the rear thereof, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, means for automatically actuating said trimming mechanisms, and a presser foot cooperating with both of said trimming mechanisms, one ply of material passing beneath the same and the medallion above the same.
36. In a sewing machine having feeding mechanism and a cloth plate, the combination of trimming mechanism having a single pivotal connection with said feeding mechanism for movement therewith and including a shiftable knife, means for throwing said trimming mechanism into or out of action with the shiftable knife below the upper surface of the cloth plate, and slidable means for maintaining said trimming mechanism out of action.
37. In a sewing machine having feeding mechanism and a cloth plate, the combination of trimming mechanism having a single pivotal connection with said feeding mechanism for movement therewith and including a shiftable knife, means for throwing said trimming mechanism into or out of action with the shiftable knife below the upper surface of the cloth plate, and slidable means for maintaining said trimming mechanism out of action, said adjustable means being carried by the feeding mechanism.
38. In a sewing machine having needle mechanism, feeding mechanism and a throat plate provided with a slot, the combination of trimming mechanism including a pivotally supported shiftable knife working in said slot, a single pivotal connection between said knife and the feeding mechanism, means for throwing said knife into and out of'action, and slidable means carried by the feeding mechanism for adjusting the throw of said knife and also effective to maintain said knife below the upper surface of the throat plate.
89. In a sewing machine for forming medallions and having driving mechanism, feeding mechanism, needle mechanism and a cloth-plate, the combination of a pair of trimming mechanisms located one to operate in front of the needle and the other in the rear thereof, both of the trimmers being located at the same side of the needle but one in position to cut closer to the center line of the stitches than the other whereby one cuts the edge of the material'inside of the center line of the stitches and the other cuts only the lower ply of material outside of the stitches, said front trimming mechanism having connection with the driving mechanism and said rear trimming mechanism having connection with the feeding mechanism, means for independently throwing either of said trimming mechanisms out of operation and below the upper surface of thecloth-plate, and a presser foot 00- operating with both of said trimming mechanisms, one ply of material passing beneath the presser foot and the medallion above the presser foot.
40. In a sewing machine having feeding mechanism and needle mechanism, the combination of a throat plate having a slot therein, trimming mechanism having a pivotally supported shiftable knife-located in said slot to operate in the rear of the needle,
said knife having connection with the feeding mechanism for movement thereby, sliding means carried by the feeding mechanism for adjusting the position of the knife and for maintaining said knife below the upper surface of the throat plate, and pedally operative means connected with said knife for throwing it into or out of action.
41. In a sewing machine having feeding mechanism including a. rocking member, and needle mechanism, the combination of a throat plate having a slot one edge thereof forming a fixed knife, a pivotally supported shiftable knife located in said slot and operative in the rear of the needle, a lever having a pin and slot connection with the knife below the throat plate and pivotally connected with said feeding mechanism in the rear of said knife, means for operating said lever thereby to throw the knife into and out of action and adjustable means carried by said rocking member for adjusting the I throw of said knife and for also maintaining said knife out of action.
