.This .invention relates'fto a coating device, the general object of the invention being to provide means for applying a coating of adhesive material or the like to a strip or piece of leather, fabric or the like.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several Views, and in whichzl Figure l is an elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
In this drawing, the numeral I indicates a tank which contains adhesive material or the-like and at one end said tank is formed with an upright 2 to which is hinged one end of a substantially inverted U-shaped arm 3, as shown at II. The other end of the arm and the hinged part of the arm are formed with bearings for a shaft 4 which at its front end carries a wide, smooth roller 5. A spring 6 is connected to a projection 'I on the arm 3 and to a projection 8 on the upright 2 and this spring tends to move the arm with the shaft and roller 5 downwardly. A hollow shaft 9 is journaled in the ends of the tank adjacent the top thereof and receives a shaft Ill which passes through the hollow shaft and at its front end has attached thereto a roller II which is much narrower than the roller 5 and the periphery of this roller I I is roughened or corrugated, as shown. A smooth roller I2 is carried by the front end of the hollow shaft 9 and this smooth roller is of slightly less diameter than the roller II and has its front face formed with a concavity I3 so that the major part of the roller I2 is spaced from the roller II to prevent the two rollers from being fastened together by the adhesive when the adhesive dries. As will be seen, both of the rollers II and I2 extend into the adhesive in the tank and a pair of adjustable scraper members I4 and I5 is located in the tank, one for removing surplus material from the roller I2 and the other from the roller II. As will be seen, the spring 6 tends to hold the roller 5 against the rollers II and I2 so that the three rollers tend to gripa vstrip or piece of material, shown at A, placed between the rollers, and the roller 5, with the roller II, will tend to feed the strip or piece between the rollers. f
A s. the Strip is fedbetween thef rollers., the .roller I2 will deposit some of the adhesive material from the tank ontok that portion of the strip or piece engaged by the roller I2 and this roller I2 is rotated in an o-pposite direction from the line of 5 feed ofthe strip through means of thevbelts and pulleys, shown generally at I6, and which connect the shaft 4 to the hollow shaft 9. The shaft 4 and the shaft I 0 are geared together by the gears I'I and either the shaft Ill or the shaft 4 10 can be rotated through means of a crank handle or any other suitable means. The upper gear I1 is shown as being removably attached to the shaft 4 so that this gear can be removed when the arm 3 is to be swung upwardly.
As will be seen, the roller I2 which is used for applying the adhesive or coating material to the strip or piece A is rotated in an opposite direc'- tion from the roller II and in an opposite direction to the line of travel of the strip so that this roller will thoroughly coat that part of they strip or piece with which it engages. A gauge member I8 is supported from the arm 3 and acts as a gauge to the inner edge of the strip or piece A, as shown in Figure 1.
This device can be used for coating various kinds of articles, such for instance, as a sole of a shoe where it is customary to coat the edge parts of one face thereof for causing the sole to adhere to the bottom part of an upper. If desired, the arm 3 can be moved upwardly and the strip or piece to be coated simply held against the roller I2 and drawn across the same so as to rotate the roller to cause it to apply the coating tothe strip or piece. By adjusting the speed of rotationvof the rollers, the thickness Vof the coating can be regulated and if desired, a second corrugated section can be placed on the opposite side of the smooth section or roller I2, but in this case the roller I2 must be made much narrower so that the three sections or rollers will be of the same thickness as the upper roller 5.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. A coating device of the class described comprising a tank containing coating material, a supporting'member above the tank, a horizontally arranged shaft rotatably supported by said member, a roller attached to the shaft, a horizontally arranged hollow shaft rotatably supported in the upper part of the tank, a shaft passingv through the hollow shaft, a corrugated roller attached to the shaft which passes through the hollow shaft, a smooth roller carried by the hollow shaft and of slightly less diameter than the corrugated roller, the combined widths of the corrugated and smooth rollers being substantially the same as the width of the first mentioned roller and said corrugated and smooth rollers being located under the first mentioned roller, said' corrugated and smooth rollers extending into the Y material in the tank, means for rotating the first mentioned roller and the corrugated `roller in opposite directions for receiving a strip placed between them and means for rotating the hollow shaft and the smooth roller in an opposite direction to the corrugated roller.

In a coating device of the class described a tank containing coating material, an upright at one end of the tank, a substantially inverted U- shaped member having one end pivoted to the upright, a horizontally arranged shaft journalled in the U-shaped member, a roller carried by the shaft and located above the tank, spring means for moving the U-shaped member downwardly, a hollow horizontally arranged shaft journalled in the upper part of the tank, a smooth roller carriedby the hollow shaft, a shaft passing through the hollow shaft, a corrugated roller carried by the last mentioned shaft, gears connecting the last mentioned shaft with the first mentioned shaft, means for driving the hollow shaft from the first mentioned shaft in the same direction as the first mentioned shaft, said smooth roller having a concave face abutting the corrugated roller, said smooth roller and the corrugated roller being located under the first mentioned roller.
