YUNITED sT-Ariszswv DANIEL COLLINS, OF AKER, OREGON.
:PAPER-resulte MACHINE.
Applcatpuled October 30, v1922. Serial No. 597,881.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL CoLLINs,-a citi- '.i zenv of the United States, residing at Baker,
iii
in the county of Baker and Stateof Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fasting Machines; and
I do hereby declare the lfollowing t'o be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe in `f machine.
vention, lsuch as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
This invention relates to. a paste-applying It is particularly aimed to providea novel machine whereby wall paper as it is unrolled for use or to becut .into lengths will auto inatically receive an application of paste or adhesive so as to overcomethe present man` yual method in view of the time lost and expense incurred incidental thereto.
It is further aimed to provide a reservoir to contain the paste or adhesive and in which an applicator roller is disposed, together with means on the reservoir to mount a roll of paper in constant yieldable contact with the applicator roller, an idler on the reservoir over which the paper passes and a scraper means for excess adhesive on the paper located adjacent the idler roll.
Vith the above and additional objects and advantages such as will be pointed out or be apparent from a consideration of the following description, in view, the invention has been embodied in one preferred form as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings Figure l is a view in side elevation illustrating the invention in connection with a paper hangers table;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the paste-applying mechanism; n
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal sectional View on line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view showing the separable connection between the paper roll and supporting arms therefor.
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts in the different views.
In reducing the invention to practice, a tank or reservoir of suitable shape and size is provided as at 10 and being open at its top as shown. A roll about which wall paper or the equivalent 11 1s wrapped 1s shown at 12 and adapted for detachable mounting in supporting arms ,13 pivoted'as at 14 to and within the reservoirlO. Such i:
detachable mounting may be accomplishedl in many ways and for example one arm 13 may have a socket 15 to receive one end of roller 12 while the other arm may have an open end socket or slot 16 Vto receive the other end of said roller.
" A paste lor adhesive applicator is shown within the reservoir 10 as being a roller 17 having ashaft or trunnions 18 journaled in the side Walls of the reservoir. The paper 11 as itis unwrapped vfrom roller, 12 passes at its pasting side or surface over and in direct contact with roll 17 as shown, and-as saidvroll travels inthe paste or adhesive contained .in said reservoir as shown, the periphery of the roll 177transfers the paste or adhesive automatically. and evenly to said pasting surface of thelpaperf l An idler roll 19 by means of a shaft or trunnions 2O is lrotatably journaled in bearf ing plates 21 secured` to the side walls of with as it passes through the machine in order to scrape or remove surplus adhesive therefrom, causing it to fall back into the supply with the reservoir. Blade 23 is preferably of metal and it may have arms 24 I integral therewith screwed or otherwise fastened to the walls of the reservoir as at 25. Disposed between the idler 19 and scraper 23 is a spreader and smoother that comprises a bar 26 of any suitable material, preferably wood, supported on the sideV walls' of reservoir 10 and covered with one or more layers v of cloth, felt, or otherv suitable material 27.
l The purpose of the spreader or smoother is to evenly distribute the paste o-n the paper and to smooth its surface, as well as to re- .move any surplusage of paste that may remain on the paper that might be left by the scraper 23.
Paste or adhesive may be poured into the reservoir 10 through its open top or prepared and mixed within lsaid reservoir as preferred. Prior to inserting a roll of paper, idler 19 is removed and after the paper roll is mounted in the arms 13 it is partially unwrapped, passing` over the applicator 17 and the idler is then restored to the operative position as shown in the drawings. The. paper may then be freely un- Wrapped and cut into lengths or otherwise for use or application to a Wall. As arms 13 are pivoted as shown, the roll ll tends to move toward applicatorl 1T automatically to insure effective engagement of the paper with the applicator as the diameter of said roll decreases. lVhile not necessary, yet it is preferable to use a table A in connection with the machine so as to hold the Jfree end of the paper for measuring, cutting or the like. The top of the table shown may consist of an endless Web B of canvas or other flexible material mounted by rotatable rolls C thereon which enables the web to travel as the paper is pulled over the Web in order to reduce friction to the minimum.
As merely' one operative embodiment has been illustrated and described, it is to he understood that changes in the details may be resorted to provided they fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention.
`What is claimed is l. An adhesive-applying machine having a reservoir to contain adhesive, an applicator to travel in the adhesive and transfer the same to material passed thereover, an
mounted in the reservoir, arms pivoted toV the reservoir at one side of the applicator, a roll about which material is adapted .to be Wrapped detachably mounted by said arms,
the Weight of vthe rolly land material maintaining said arms out of the vertical and urging them at their 'free ends toward the applicator, the material adapted to pass over the applicator, an idler under which the material passes, a bearing having a plurality of notches at' different elevations to selec tively mount the idler, and a blade to scrape surplus adhesive from the material disposed in the reservoir intermediate the applicator and idler.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
